Hawks-Cavs game thread

Greetings, all-
Ken Sugiura sitting in for MC again to give him a much-deserved breather. Dude’s been grinding. He is working on a story for Friday that I think you’ll find interesting.

A few notes. Jamal Crawford is out again with a back injury. He did not look like the definition of spry in the locker room before the game. He had some trouble even bending down to pick something up off the floor.

Marvin Williams wasn’t thrilled about coming off the bench Monday. It should be in the notes posted shortly. (It’s just before 7 p.m. right now)

Joe Johnson said he can’t fully extend his right arm yet. He’s still doing therapy – resistance stuff – and said it affects his release, which might explain a little. He’s 16 for 48 (33.3 percent) since coming back and 3 for 16 from 3-point range (18.8 percent).

Enjoy the game.

Marvin not thrilled about coming off the bench? I wonder if it bothered him in college?

Jamal being out just reinforces that the Hawks could have done without Jamal for the year. They would have learned how to adapt. Plus JC2 would have stepped up (imo).

“Marvin wasn’t thhrilled about coming off the bench”. What’s he going to do then to justify a starting spot? How is he going to prove all of us who think he’s not a starter that we are wrong?

Nique has the worst keys to the game. They have been pretty much the same for 3 years with each team ,just add their star player when he says the “Hawks have to slow down ……….” to win the game.

Typical Hawks. Get a quality win and come out flat against a bad team. You also have to love that instead of taking it inside they just settle for jumpers.

Those are the most discouraging pregame notes I’ve ever read on this blog.

Jamal can’t bend down? Dude has been out for a freaking week.

Marvin is not pleased about coming off bench? who the hell was he gonna start over? Josh Smith? Well if Marvin was displeased, maybe he DOES actually care?

Joe can’t extend his arm? Why the hell is he back yet? His shooting has been awful

That was an awful first quarter on both ends of the floor. I think the Hawks are on Christmas vacation a little bit too early tonight. The offense looked chaotic and there were tons of miscues on the defensive end. Hopefully, the team wakes up in the second quarter.

Bailey

December 22nd, 2010
8:12 pm

The Hawks are up in this one, but I didn’t really like the way the team played. The offense looks too scattered. The Hawks really need to get Al more involved in the offense, once again. It’s amazing that they still haven’t realized that. The Hawks ran two post-ups for Al against varejao, and it resulted in a foul on varejao and then a basket. Aside from that, Horford was basically ignored in that second quarter on the offensive end.

Defensively, it makes little sense why Collins was inserted in the second quarter, rather than Marvin, at first. Collins’s strengths are not very effective in this scenario against quicker, more mobile bigs like Jamison and Varejao.

Marvin was pretty effective. I was impressed with him on the offensive end, with his effort and ability to hit open looks when he got them.

At any rate, the energy needs to pick up on both ends, and we need to run more offense through our bigs, who have a clear advantage on the offensive end.

Bailey

December 22nd, 2010

cp and terrell,

I think the energy line is just the team’s favorite excuse when they don’t know what else to say. It’s easy to say that you played badly because you didn’t play with enough energy, rather than stating what you really did wrong. A lot of the time, the energy isn’t even the biggest issue.

“The perception is we don’t spend money,” Gearon said about the Hawks. “Yet you look at our roster and the core assets, we’ve kept all of them.”

Props to Horford on that last play. He dribbling down the clock and took the violation. After he took it, Smoove put his arms out, asking “why did you do that?”…He did that twice. Horford finally looked at him then looked away.

It’s obvious which of the 2 is mature and which isn’t…

JeJe,

Maybe Josh wanted to get the fans a free gift if they scored 100pts or maybe he didn’t want another turnover added to their total….lol

“how did Rip Ham score 35 in 14 mins..?”

This is how:
Hamilton said he was not bothered by the change in the starting lineup and added, “The biggest thing that hurt me was a source in the organization said I quit.”

I guess Hawks fans got a triple dose tonight.

Hawks got a blowout win, Marvin still playing well, and Jeff is getting some minutes and contributing.

Go on a win streak, Hawks!

Reason being, the offense seems to flow better with Teague more than it does with Jamal at point.

The ASG settlement really has no financial bearing on the teams apparently, so I don’t think it’s that noteworthy

That’s what they keep saying, but I still find that a little hard to believe. We know for a fact that the team has been losing money, and we know that they have unsuccessfully tried to attract new investors. If nothing else, a stable ownership situation makes it more likely that new investors would be interested in buying a share of the franchise.

I don’t think many people want to invest in these Atlanta teams. We are still viewed as a joke city.

Hopefully the Falcons change that

Melvin,

It would have been nice to see him with 10 in the first half. That would have given him 20 for the game

Gearon is right. Its not that the Hawks dont spend money. Its that when they do, they dont always spend it wisely.

Marvin is playing defense and scoring…what a novel Idea

Rip had 35 points in 28 minutes. Wow. Maybe Detroit wants him to go off so they can trade him.

I think the lawsuit being settled might help the Thrashers. They have one of (if not the) lowest payroll in the league.

When the hawks start off slowly, you fans are quick to jump on them, with the name calling and calling them scrubs in all,but as soon as they start to play well you same fans praise them, you all wonder why the national media don’t respect this team, hawks fans don’t respect them.

Hawks make me yawnnnnnn… They are freaking boring to watch. They played an awful team tonight and were not impressive at all. Thank goodness for my remote. The Eagles with Mike Vic are way more entertaining to watch with the HD DVR. Its going be real ugly in Feb.

No one will deny that in hindsight Marvin was not worthy of the 2nd overall pick but every team in the NBA was salivating over his athleticism – we took the lemons and made lemonade – he is our best on-ball defender – he guards the superstar 2’s and 3’s we go up against – and more often than not he shuts them down – WE KEPT HIM FOR HIS DEFENSE, FOLKS ! – the travesty is his reluctance to use his athleticism to get to the rim so he can take advantage of his 80+% clip from the charity stripe

The Hawks franchise are not respected by the national media including Barkley because they have not won anything. Heck they haven’t been to a conference final in 23 years!! That is a sign of incompetence people from the top down. Until they start winning championships(not) nothing will change with the national media. This organization are PRETENDERS not CONTENDERS..Takin knuckle dragging(Duck) over future HOF DWILL will get you no respect! Takin JOHN CONTRACT(avg. 1 pt/ 1 rebound per game for the Hawks) over Barkley in 1985 will add up to no respect!! Wake the heck up around here..It’s a write off…NBA TV is looking better and better every day. Keep up the good work JJ! The three stooges need you Sir….
