Snooped around a bit today to see if there any trade winds blowing for the Hawks in light of their inconsistent play, the Magic’s big weekend trade and the Celtics and and Heat streaking to the top of the East. Sorry, blog people, but all still sounds quiet.
I understand the consternation. It feels like everyone else is moving ahead in the East while the Hawks stand still. Miami, Chicago and Boston made their moves over the summer. Orlando (surprisingly) made theirs in December. The Hawks basically have the same guys, with the same strengths and weaknesses, still trying to prove they are on the same level as those teams.
All of the chatter surrounding trades doesn’t go unnoticed in the Hawks’ locker room, of course, though you won’t find guys openly advocating for a shakeup.
“I think we are OK where we are at,” Al said. “Joe is getting back healthy. That’s what I think but, at the end of the day, it comes down to management and what they feel like is best. If they feel like we can contend for a championship with this team, then it will be like this. If not, then I don’t know.”
Smoove again noted the Hawks haven’t been healthy. Rotation players have missed 23 players due to injury.
“It messes up the timing. it messes up the positions,” Josh said. “I’ve probably split the three and the four this season. When you know the different rotations of the game and what’s going to happen, I think it makes it that much easier because everything is combined I think when we get everybody healthy and figure out the rotation that’s positive for us, I think we will pull a string of wins together like everyone else is right now.”
At this point, it seems the injuries are the only reasonable counterargument the Hawks could offer to the need to make some moves. Good health won’t necessarily solve the team’s weaknesses but it would at least allow for a better evaluation. I know the Celtics have rolled despite their injuries but they are better equipped to do so from a financial standpoint. The Heat have the Super Friends, a defense-first culture and enough solid pieces around the Big Three to get it done despite injuries to Mike Miller and Haslem.
The Hawks have a slimmer margin to be good and the injuries have made it even smaller.
“I think that’s fair to say,” Al said. “Ultimately it comes down to Rick Sund, the GM, to determine if he feels we are still contenders or if he feels like we need to do something. All I am going to do is go out there and keep playing hard.”
Jamal out, Hawks big
Jamal is out again. He said he was hoping to play but the back is still too sore. He could probably function but the thought of shaking and baking or making any other kind of sudden movements still makes him wince.
L.D. is going with the big lineup: Bibby, J.J., Smoove, Al, Twin.
L.D. said preparing for the new-look Magic is similar to preparing for the old-look Magic. He said J-Rich is like Vince except not quite as strong on pick-and-rolls. Turkoglu is a stretch four like Rashard, except a better passer and ballhandler. The Hawks have to watch Arenas closely in transition.
“Still the main guy is Dwight and what you do with him,” L.D. said. “The gameplan is to defend him as well as you can and also defend that 3-point line because that’s where they kill you.”

I’m very curious to see who Orlando plays at center when Dwight goes to the bench. My guess is that it will be either Malik Allen or Brandon Bass, but in either case, that leaves them pretty vulnerable inside. I’m also surprised not to see Ryan Anderson yet. I would have thought that he would be the first big coming off of the bench for Orlando.

From Last Blog:
Fundamentals
Hell Yeah! Every Game Counts … Are you kidding me? The competition in the
NBA is fierce and conference standings determine:
Home Court Advantage
Strength of Opponent (esp in Round 1)
Joe needs to play ALL 82 Games for 48 Minutes if healthy.
In response to Fundamentals who said this:
“If Joe is really worried about the TEAM he should get 100%, pass the ball when he’s off, not shoot 3’s till he’s back and focus on wins. I’m glad he appears
rested and ready to play, but worry about if the elbow is truly ready.”
And also, Joe is a SG: That means he is paid to shoot the damn thing!
If your shot is cold, YOU Keep shooting, until it gets HOT!
Every shooter thinks the next shot is going in.
Who would you rather take the open jumper? Marvin?
Joe leads this team in assists 6 years straight, why? Because the dumb Azz GM won’t go get a damned PG! How is it selfish to shoot when you are the BEST shooting option and paid to do so, on this jacked up team of 12 Tweeners!
Al & Josh’s azz need to stay in the post, I don’t need to see them taking jumpers, who is gonna rebound when they miss? Bigs Play INSIDE for And 1’s and The Guar ds play outside and shoot, hopefully the PG’s will penetrate.
Teague is a terrible passer, BTW!

Marvin plays very small!
So does Josh and Al when they are jacking up jumpers!
They look like a 7′ man playing in a sand box or swinging from the monkey bars!
I just don’t get it! That’s why I don’t respect Dirk Nowitski … He will NEVER win a Ring playing outside and no defense. I wouldn’t pay him .10 cents to bring his 7′ azz here, to shoot jumpers and run from the paint!
The Hawks are already too small in the post, to contend… So why are the BIGS shooting b!tch azz jumpers? Where is the Logic?

Good job so far by the Hawks on the defensive end. The offense hasn’t really been flowing that well so far in this game, but Bibby had some hot shooting in the third to help the Hawks maintain the lead. I’d like to see the Hawks go inside more to Al down the stretch. The Hawks haven’t really exploited that mismatch enough and I don’t feel like Bass has the length to handle Al in the post. At any rate, the Hawks are doing a good job of scrapping for buckets on a night where Joe Johnson is, again, struggling with his shot.

Great win. Al was superb tonight, Bibby did a good job to hide his weaknesses and hurt the magic with his shooting, and Marvin even impressed me in this one with his effort plays. Another tough shooting night for Joe (7-18), but he did a good job of passing the ball to the open man and really refraining from going old-school Iso-Joe down the stretch. The offense never really picked up until late in the game, but the defense looked pretty effective throughout. Dwight scored 19 points, but he had to take tons of free throws to get those, and the perimeter shooters weren’t a huge factor.
Now, obviously, the Magic haven’t had a chance to really incorporate their new players yet and looked out of sync tonight, but at any rate, you’ve got to give the Hawks credit for their defense. This was a quality win.

Great Defense. Great Rotations. Coach shortened that rotation, good call to get things back under patrol. Magic just ruined their team, they are as small as we are now. I saw Za stand next to Howard, Za is taller, Dwight is bigger though.
Magic got smaller, I can’t believe that trade, they gutted their team for no apparent reason. Jason Richardson has never been guarded before, welcome to the East Coast, we defend ’round here boy!
Gilbert looked lost! Sometimes the best trade is no trade. Miami will prolly make some more moves though. Hawks? Nothing!

Good win by the squad tonight. Once again, they lose a game they should’ve won, but turned around and beat the Magic.
I can already see the highlight package on Sportscenter. They’ll show the new guys in the Magic uniforms, and show highlights of them making, but mostly missing shots. Dwight will get a few highlights.

Good win. And, much needed win. The Hawks needed to redeem themselves a bit after yesterday’s debacle.
To me..the key was Bibby. He got smacked by Turk while he was running the baseline. Bibby went down, was no call, and he said something to Turk as the two left the floor at the end of the third. Then, the fourth quarter started and Bibby took over.
Good games by Al and Collins (I’ve said all along I like this guy!). And, the poster ‘it was not a bad pick’ may be on to something. Marvin was good tonight. He’s been good, for the most part, these past couple weeks.
Not sure we should stroke ourselves too much over this win. It was, essentially, the Magic’s first game together. But, win is a win. And, the Hawks needed a win.

Good to get the win, but I wasn’t impressed at all by the offensive execution. Joe is taking to long to rotate the ball and he’s not consistently working hard enough to come off screens. The guys take too many outside shots with no one driving to the basket. This game came down to how poorly Orlando was playing, more than the HAWKS defensive in my opinion. I do like the big lineup against Orlando, especially with them not having Lewis any more. Smoove can stay close to the basket. The HAWKS were making jump shots this game which made their offensive look better than it did against NJ, but I still see a lot of problems with it. Hopefully Joe is finding his rhythm, he started hitting some shots in the 2nd.
Overall I would like to see a lot more pick-and-roll with Horford or just starting the offensive with Horford in the high post. Horford is really shooting the ball well and we need to take advantage of it on every possession.
GO HAWKS!!

Whether he’s playing C or PF, AHorford has become a very effective and consistent scorer, and his DEF and rebounding haven’t suffered as a result of playing both positions.
I looked at the best available FA centers and JPryzbilla was at the top of the list. The article said although he’s limited offensively, he’d be an excellent addition to any team looking for a good rebounder and DEF presence in the middle either as a starter or coming off the bench. It also said he’s been considered the NBA’s best backup center, and could likely be had for the MLE.
Signing him as a FA might be difficult for the Hawks since he’s made it known he has issues with the Hawks after BKnight traded him against his will.
