Atlanta Hawks: Pistons 103, Hawks 80

Auburn Hills, Mich.–Well, so much for that.

– There was a point when it looked like the Pistons had finally stopped making shots and the Hawks would methodically put them away. Except it didn’t happen. “It got out of hand quickly,” Bibby said. “They hit like three or four threes in a row and it was just a rampage of threes that we couldn’t stop.”

– The Pistons scored 39 points in the fourth quarter. If that’s not incredible enough for you, how about: The Pistons scored 39 points in the fourth quarter and T-Mac and Villanueva had 28 of them.

– “You have to give Detroit credit tonight,” L.D. said. “They made shots. Defensively we didn’t same sense of urgency that we did in the third quarter when we held them to 15 points. We completely fell apart in that fourth quarter. We turned the basketball over, they were able to run out on us and we just couldn’t get the job done.”

– The Hawks were down 66-63 with 9:46 to play. Four minutes later they were down 81-66. Usually it’s the good teams that make the Hawks pay for each mistake at winning time but the Pistons managed to do it, too.

– The rundown . . . Detroit: Villanueva made a 3. . . Josh Powell missed a layup. . . . Stuckey made two free throws. . . Smoove missed a forced hook shot. . . . T-Mac made a 3. . . . Smoove made a 3. . . . Stuckey missed a 3. . . . Villanueva stole it from Smoove. . . . Villanueva dunked on the break. . . . Bibby threw it away. . . . T-Mac made a 3.

– Just like the Hawks were down 81-68. They couldn’t get any closer than 11 from there and sent up the white flag down 92-72 with three minutes left. “We turned the ball over a couple of times, took some ill-advised shots and as I’ve explained to the guys all it takes is two or three possessions of taking bad shots and the game can get out of hand,” L.D. said.

– “I looked up at the scoreboard and they were up like 74-66,” Bibby said. “The next time I looked up it was like 80 to 100.”

– In the fourth quarter Detroit made 14 of 25 shots, scored 12 fastbreak points and had 12 points off of turnovers. The Hawks had seven turnovers, leading to 12 Detroit points, so it hardly mattered that they shot 53 percent (8 of 15).

– The Pistons played with desperation while the Hawks seemed to figure they could just make a few plays and pull out a W. The difference probably had something to do with Atlanta generally rolling along without J.J. while Detroit blew that 25-point against the Raptors on Saturday.

– The Pistons may not be the Pistons anymore but people here still care, so that kind of effort gets them dogged out. They saved some face by beating a team with a winning record for the first time.

– “I think we’re a lot better than our record shows, but I desperately wanted to get a win especially after how we played in that Toronto game,” Villanueva said. “I think we did a good job and responded well. I’d say this is what Pistons basketball is all about.”

– They’ve called Villanueva a free agent bust and T-Mac washed up. The Hawks made them look like All-Stars, and not just because of those shots they made in the fourth quarter. Both guys had season-highs in rebounds as Detroit pounded Atlanta 43-31 on the boards.

– Detroit, hardly known for inside muscle, also outscored the Hawks 36-26 in the paint. That’s just the fourth time they’ve managed to do that.

– The Hawks dropped to 12-4 against teams with losing records. They hadn’t lost this kind of game since Nov. 23 at New Jersey, the day after the beatdown from Boston and the day before the famous team meeting.

– Bad night for Jamal. He took just six shots, making one, and had five turnovers to offset four assists. He said his back was bothering him and he’s not sure if he will play Thursday.

– Without the usual scoring punch from Jamal, the Hawks couldn’t find any offense outside of Smoove, Bibby and Al. They combined to make 21 of 42 shots, everyone else was 9 of 26.

– Al was the only guy doing much rebounding for the Hawks.

— Powell gives good effort. If only he were a couple inches taller he might actually collect more of those rebounds he gets his hands on, block some of those challenged shots and finish better at the rim.

– Another one of those games where you wonder if Marvin out there. He missed some shots and then seemed to disappear. It’s hard to know how much the knee is bothering him, though.

Rip Hamilton had his way with Bibby, Mo, and Wilkins in the first half. He didn’t even need to score in the fourth quarter with T-Mac and Villanueva draining 3s.

– “It got away from us and I don’t know how,” Josh said. “It really started with those three-point shots. T-Mac had an unbelievable game, probably his best game of the year. I think it broke our backs. We did a bad job on the rotations.”

no but if marvin leaves we will miss the towel thing he does around his head at least he is good at that, common and what’s wrong if zaza knows how to dress, and what if joe johnson has a ton of money on his contract, it’s the nba but it’s not all about basketball all the time, it’s still a business and if your team is not in position to win it all well then just start having fun elsewhere doing what you love, we are just being too hard on these guys before we would be happy to even make the playoffs now we expect the hawks to be in the conf finals everywhere based off success from a coach we just fired, wow that makes a lot of sense, add in our attendance numbers for some games and having the head of your basketball operations also as your team’s commentator with your owners still arguing and what do you expect? common, be grateful what you have because this could be A LOT WORSE cough cough cavaliers

Who said anything about Marvin being a good pick or bad pick? This team has many dangerous threats that should have made their shots or played better perimeter D. I don’t even care if Marvin touches the ball or not, or even whether or not he is a bust.

All i know is that this team can win and it can do so without Marvin. The fact that we’re still stuck here bashing one guy is very immature. If Marvin vanished to thin air, this team should have found different ways to win especially against Detroit.Last I checked, Detrioit scored 100 points, unless Marvin somehow just started chucking three pointers at his own basket then hes not my problem.

MC, IF YOU READ THIS,

noticed on the falcons blog these video-previews of the games that show clips of players talking about the games. It would be nice for us that don’t have fox sports / exposure to post-game reports to hear the players voices in non-quote form before big games occasionally (and i’m not talking about the incredibly rare video of the guy on hawks.com asking unimportant players stupid questions). Also it would be interesting to hear you actually ask the questions and have them answered in full instead of merely providing tidbits for answers.

Also, it would be awesome if there was a way for us to vote on interview questions to ask a different hawks player/coach every week. People submit questions, the board votes on which to ask, grilling of players ensues. All would rejoice.

Throw us a damn bone err now and then we aint hard to please

For those who wonder why I’m not a bandwagon jumper, and remain loyal and confident in LDrew and what he’s capable of doing for the team, these are my reasons. I’ve taken into consideration the following”

1-We have a new HC, OFF/DEF systems, philosophy, approach, focus and expectations,
2-The players have had to adjust and establish a new chemistry within the oontext of all of the above,
3-While accomplishing all of this, they’ve had to play half(13)their gms on the rd,
4-They’ve played 8 back to backs in their 1st 26gms,
5-they have players like JCollins, JTeague and JPowell adjusting to playing larger rolls and more MPG than in the past.

Yet, we’re 16-10 and about to close out the toughest stretch of our schedule. We’ve upgraded our roster by adding DWilkins, and we’ve manage to accomplish a lot of this without the services of JJ, our best all around OFF & DEF player and leader in scoring and assists.

Let’s face it, with so many rd gms, and an unbelievable number of back to backs, a lot of you expected the Hawks would have callapsed by now. By the 2nd half of the season, and especially come playoff time, this team will be far better off, and far more improved than last yrs team.

As far as the Marvin issue is concerned, I can’t argue with what some of you are saying. However, he’s our starting SF, and as much as I’d like to see more consist production out of him, I realize that until LDrew feels compelled to make a change or adjustment, to continuously make an issue of it gm after gm, especially at this early point in the season, IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.

Until LDrew feels compelled to make a change

Ken,
The Hawks are going backwards while the Bulls, Heat and Knicks are going forward. Looks like we will likely play Orlando, Chicago or NY or Miami in the 1st round. We stand a good chance of losing to any of these teams which would mean that the experiment has failed.

@Ken Strickland If Ldrew or Sund or who ever dont see the need to transfer the 12 million or so per year that Marvin and Zaza makes into more production then we deserve to be in 5th place and out in the 2nd round. It is so funny that some can see the problems of Obama, Bush Republicans Democrats or whoever but you can not look at this team and honestly say we need to make a change starting with those 2 players.

SAMUEL-we also stand a good chance of defeating those teams in a 1st rd series as well, but I guess it’s impossible to consider that scenario when you approach everything with a NEGATIVE MINDED, GLASS HALF EMPTY MENTALITY.

DUKESTER-You seem convinced that MAKING A CHANGE will be a sure fire way of making us a title contender. It’s easy to say we need to get rid of Zaza, Marvin, or whoever, for some player(S)you have yet to name, or that’s unavailable or unaffordable. Some delusional fans seem to think we can resolve all of our issues by forcing teams, against their will or better judgement, to trade their star players for players you feel are scrubbs, failures and a total waste.

I’m not certain if that should be considered DELUSIONAL, or just plain STUPID. We’ve all seen the Knicks, Bulls and Heat go on winning streaks and turn things around. However, unlike when we were on our winning streak, I haven’t read a single comment about them defeating most of the same losing teams we defeated during our winning.

SAMUEL-You are so NEGATIVE AND ONE TRACK MINDED when it comes to the Hawks. Up until the time Miami, Chicago and New York went on their respective winning streaks, weren’t all 3 teams losing regularily and behind us in the standings? So, prior to each team going on their respective winning streaks, couldn’t you have said the changes and/or experiments they made were failures as well?

SAMUEL, an NBA team is judged by the results attained during a full 82gm season, not the 1st 26gms. One day, hopefully, you’ll be able to come to that realization.

Sure,
But those teams all had new player as key elements. We have no new players except J Powell so I see those teams continually getting better. Sure we “can” beat those teams but for the past few years we have been locks to make it to the 2nd round. Not this year.

If L Drew wants to be employed for awhile here he better feel compelled sooner rather than later to make a move and bench the ” Marvin Williams 6 year failed experiment”!
