Atlanta Hawks: Pistons 103, Hawks 80

Auburn Hills, Mich.–Well, so much for that.

– There was a point when it looked like the Pistons had finally stopped making shots and the Hawks would methodically put them away. Except it didn’t happen. “It got out of hand quickly,” Bibby said. “They hit like three or four threes in a row and it was just a rampage of threes that we couldn’t stop.”

– The Pistons scored 39 points in the fourth quarter. If that’s not incredible enough for you, how about: The Pistons scored 39 points in the fourth quarter and T-Mac and Villanueva had 28 of them.

– “You have to give Detroit credit tonight,” L.D. said. “They made shots. Defensively we didn’t same sense of urgency that we did in the third quarter when we held them to 15 points. We completely fell apart in that fourth quarter. We turned the basketball over, they were able to run out on us and we just couldn’t get the job done.”

– The Hawks were down 66-63 with 9:46 to play. Four minutes later they were down 81-66. Usually it’s the good teams that make the Hawks pay for each mistake at winning time but the Pistons managed to do it, too.

– The rundown . . . Detroit: Villanueva made a 3. . . Josh Powell missed a layup. . . . Stuckey made two free throws. . . Smoove missed a forced hook shot. . . . T-Mac made a 3. . . . Smoove made a 3. . . . Stuckey missed a 3. . . . Villanueva stole it from Smoove. . . . Villanueva dunked on the break. . . . Bibby threw it away. . . . T-Mac made a 3.

– Just like the Hawks were down 81-68. They couldn’t get any closer than 11 from there and sent up the white flag down 92-72 with three minutes left. “We turned the ball over a couple of times, took some ill-advised shots and as I’ve explained to the guys all it takes is two or three possessions of taking bad shots and the game can get out of hand,” L.D. said.

– “I looked up at the scoreboard and they were up like 74-66,” Bibby said. “The next time I looked up it was like 80 to 100.”

– In the fourth quarter Detroit made 14 of 25 shots, scored 12 fastbreak points and had 12 points off of turnovers. The Hawks had seven turnovers, leading to 12 Detroit points, so it hardly mattered that they shot 53 percent (8 of 15).

– The Pistons played with desperation while the Hawks seemed to figure they could just make a few plays and pull out a W. The difference probably had something to do with Atlanta generally rolling along without J.J. while Detroit blew that 25-point against the Raptors on Saturday.

– The Pistons may not be the Pistons anymore but people here still care, so that kind of effort gets them dogged out. They saved some face by beating a team with a winning record for the first time.

– “I think we’re a lot better than our record shows, but I desperately wanted to get a win especially after how we played in that Toronto game,” Villanueva said. “I think we did a good job and responded well. I’d say this is what Pistons basketball is all about.”

– They’ve called Villanueva a free agent bust and T-Mac washed up. The Hawks made them look like All-Stars, and not just because of those shots they made in the fourth quarter. Both guys had season-highs in rebounds as Detroit pounded Atlanta 43-31 on the boards.

– Detroit, hardly known for inside muscle, also outscored the Hawks 36-26 in the paint. That’s just the fourth time they’ve managed to do that.

– The Hawks dropped to 12-4 against teams with losing records. They hadn’t lost this kind of game since Nov. 23 at New Jersey, the day after the beatdown from Boston and the day before the famous team meeting.

– Bad night for Jamal. He took just six shots, making one, and had five turnovers to offset four assists. He said his back was bothering him and he’s not sure if he will play Thursday.

– Without the usual scoring punch from Jamal, the Hawks couldn’t find any offense outside of Smoove, Bibby and Al. They combined to make 21 of 42 shots, everyone else was 9 of 26.

– Al was the only guy doing much rebounding for the Hawks.

— Powell gives good effort. If only he were a couple inches taller he might actually collect more of those rebounds he gets his hands on, block some of those challenged shots and finish better at the rim.

– Another one of those games where you wonder if Marvin out there. He missed some shots and then seemed to disappear. It’s hard to know how much the knee is bothering him, though.

Rip Hamilton had his way with Bibby, Mo, and Wilkins in the first half. He didn’t even need to score in the fourth quarter with T-Mac and Villanueva draining 3s.

– “It got away from us and I don’t know how,” Josh said. “It really started with those three-point shots. T-Mac had an unbelievable game, probably his best game of the year. I think it broke our backs. We did a bad job on the rotations.”

I think I heard that Sasha Vuiajic was traded today to New Jersey for Terrence Williams and Joe Smith in Portland was somehow a part of that deal?

I may have been daydreaming, but those are the three names I think I heard this morning. Lakers always tinkering to Win BETTER!

drmaryb,

How ya doin’ Mary Ellen?

Part of the problem with idea of frustration about how they lost is that with the season being SO long, there’s just no way to keep from having a few stinkers. Even the Bulls team that won 72 had a few, and they were among the most mentally tough of all time.

With the rank immaturity of today’s pro athlete, it’s a wonder that there are not MORE games like last night. It’s takes an iron will to keep on keepin’ on when things go south. Most players today are simply not mentally tough.

Westurd,

Hey “Rod From College Park”

Can you write my thesis paper for me?

Been there, done that. I’m glad I’m not you now. Only advise I can give you is don’t wait until the last minute like I did. Good luck.

Ken Strickland,

“I DON’T HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH MARVIN, BUT YOU MARVIN BASHERS DO. Why, because HC LDrew have yet to make known any apparent dissatisfaction with the way he’s playing. WHY WOULD ANYONE CONTINUE WASTING TIME BLAMING THE TEAMS 5TH OR 6TH SCORING OPTION FOR FOR EVERY LOSS, AND FOR NOT SCORING MORE POINTS THAN OUR 1 THRU 6 SCORING OPTIONS?”

This is the main reason we Marvin bash. Every other player on this team especially Josh, gets critisized by the coach by a reduction in minutes, or a subtle shot in the media by our coaches (Woodson or Drew). The only thing you ever hear said about Marvin is, “We need more from Marvin”. Duhhhh. He is blamed for most losses because him being on the floor for 30 something minutes per game, is like playing 5 against 4 for 30 minutes. He is totally invisible on both ends of the floor. I know he is your son, so I digress.

Billy Knight is the worst GM in Hawks history because unlike Stan, he could have set in motion franchise changing events in a very positive way had he not blown 3 lottery picks. They don’t come very often. He had 4 in a row and passed on RUDY GAY,BRANDON ROY, DANNY GRANGER, CP3,DARREN WILLIAMS,LOU ALDENG, ANDRE IQUIDOLLAR ETC.. ANY ONE OF THOSE GUYS IS A MAJOR UPGRADE OVER MMMMAARVIN WILLIAMS, JOSH CHILDRESS AND THE “SLUM lord” SHELDON WILLIAMS.BUT MARVIN IS GOING TO TAKE THE MOST HEAT BECAUSE HE WAS A #2 LOTTERY PICK! THIS BUSTER SHOULD HAVE BEEN LATE SECOND ROUND OR UNDRAFTED.HE HAS SIX LOUSY YEARS TO PROVE IT NOW.. A TOTAL BUST HE IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHEN MARVIN COMES IN THE PAINT HE BECOMES A FOOT SHORTER THAT’ S WHY 5′11″ GUYS CAN BLOCK HIS SHOT. IF HE CAME DOWN TO THE RUN AND SHOOT GYM HE WOULD GET EMBARRASSED..

The Nets completed the three-team trade with the Rockets and Lakers that will send Terrence Williams to Houston and Joe Smith to Los Angeles. In return the Nets receive a lottery protected 2012 first-round pick from Houston, and shooting guard Sasha Vujacic and a 2011 first-rounder from the Lakers protected 1-18. The Nets also are giving the Lakers two second-round picks, Golden State’s 2011 and Chicago’s 2012. The Lakers also will receive the draft rights to Sergei Lishchuk from the Rockets, while the Rockets acquired guard Terrence Williams from New Jersey. Bergen Record

Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets, Trade, Sasha Vujacic, Terrence Williams, Joe Smith | share
They became increasingly frustrated by Vujacic’s years of inability to listen in that deeper way of listening that triggers actual growth. Even those within the organization who were close to Vujacic began to drift away in recent years, especially last season. It was inconceivable that Vujacic could go this entire season without being traded given how overpaid he was on such an overstuffed payroll. Matt Barnes’ signing back in July – a move not initially in the Lakers’ spending plans – ensured this day in December would come at some point. Orange County Register

Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets, Trade, Sasha Vujacic | share
I was just talking to someone about Vujacic on Monday night, saying that the feisty competitor with such an insatiable passion for playing and especially shooting has had his spirit broken this season. “No fight left in that dog,” I said – and not in a good way. Vujacic acknowledged Tuesday night that it felt “terrible” to be so useless to the Lakers now, invoking his young age (26) as further reason why.
__________________________________________________

Heck, I wonder did Sund know the Lakers wanted Joe Smith? We could have hooked that up for them last year, couldn’t our team have used a player known for passion and a firey attitude? They could have got Joe and Marvin for Sasha from us and our picks protected 1-18 plus 2 second rounders! you think?

How You? As my country folks would say.

Man, these million dollars babies are so coddled and spoiled rich, until us everyday people can’t even relate to them anymore. If we showed up to our jobs (if we’re lucky to even have one these days), punched the clock and sat in the break room for the first 48 minutes?

That would be the first and last time we punched that clock – right?
I know me personally, love all sports especially Basketball, and for me it is purely for entertainment purposes. I have never gambled on anything in my LIFE except my education. I still don’t know if I won that bet, I still owe Uncle Sam $248K for that degree. LOL!

But, as a sports consumer I like many on here just want a little BANG for my BUCKS! You feel me? Also, an escape from paying the bills and worrying about these two wars we have been in for the past 10 years.
I hear North Korea is threatening a Nuclear War, if the USA keeps aligning along side South Korea. Sautee, That’s Real! Man, they trying to wipe everbody off the face of the earth with one bomb!

so, yeah, I need my Hawks to Rise Up and take my mind off the things that are real and hard to think about in the real world. I know we Blog in a Fantasy World and probably take a lot of our personal frustrations out on Marvin and Nem’ – But, hey Sautee!

That’s why they make the big bucks – right?
______________________________________________

About these Hawks though. It’s time to look to the GM and Owners and ask them, “Now What?” “What’s up your sleeve – next, boss man?”

They did nothing in the biggest FA Class of this era and watched ALL the teams around us get better! Even, the Lakers are continuously tinkering themselves on HOW to WIN BETTER!

Just Winninig is NEVER good enough – When you are a Champion!

I use to give Marvin the benifit of doubt like most of you e43 and It was not bad Pick and over the years but I saw no development and a very uncoordinated athelete. I think you guys argument on supporting Marvin is based on pride instead of facts. Marvin is not what we need at the 3 and with JJ out he has shown the inabilty to pick his game not only has scoring droped but apg, rpg or the ability to stop impact the game defensively. Most player try to impact the game in other ways when scoring is down I have yet to see that from Marvin. Based on your respose to my earlier post you agree he is not good because you could not name 3 starting small fowards who are worst than Marvin who start in the East. Marvin is a number 2 pick who would not start on any other team in the league. My next question to you is What makes Marvin deserving of starting position in the NBA? More specfically what does he do on the floor that makes him special at his position. Before you answer the question I want you think about your answer and not answer as a prideful fan but as an objective intellegent basketball observer.

Marvin would easily start for Detroit,Toronto, cleveland,Washington,Kings,MAVS,clippers, portland, warriors and many others including playoff teams.he is big and athletic, his jumper is sweet, probaly our best on the ball defender and never takes bad shots or turn the ball over…He doesnt get enough shots..and you know atl fans give Marvin only 1 or 2 shots missed a game before they start bashing him……When the hawks decide to trade Marvin, i gurantee He will be a 20 ppg scorer, once he gets a way from Joe and Jamal….Speakin of Joe, rod was bragging about Joe averaing 18 points per game in the playoffs for a career, isn’t that kind of low for a guy who will be making 20 mill a year for the last three years of his contract?

Ex: Lee skips Yanks/Rangers to go back to the Phillies.”

Huh? Cliff Lee has been an elite pitcher for several years now. The only thing at which Marvin is elite is falling down and getting stripped on his drives to the basket. I don’t get the comparison.

1) Everyone here will assume the Hawks watched the game tonight and that they’ve seen we need to play uptempo and attack the hoop

2) We will come out sluggish vs. a team off a b2b

3) Rondo will have a triple double

4) Celts win by 15

The Knicks are currently beating the Celtics in the 4th quarter. There was a post earlier, I think by sam’l, about how the Hawks will be motivated after the loss to the Pistons to come out and avenge themselves on national TV. Maybe, we’ll see. I do know this — if the Celtics lose tonight, they are going to show up at home tomorrow looking to put the beat down on the Hawks, and it’s not going to be pretty. If I had to guess, I’d predict another blowout win by the Celtics, and I’d only feel more confident if it turns out Jamal can’t go.

“Peja Stojakovic, and according to someone who posted earlier, he makes 15 mill as a reserve!!”

This is true. He is making $15 million this year in the last year of his contract. Expiring contracts are very valuable in the NBA, and at $15 million his is probably the most valuable expiring contract there is. Of course, the odds that Toronto can do anything meaningful with it are slim to none.

WHY WOULD ANYONE CONTINUE WASTING TIME BLAMING THE TEAMS 5TH OR 6TH SCORING OPTION FOR FOR EVERY LOSS, AND FOR NOT SCORING MORE POINTS THAN OUR 1 THRU 6 SCORING OPTIONS?”

Here’s why. When Josh and Al have bad offensive nights, they usually find a way to impact the game in some way shape or form. Even when Joe has an off night shooting, he generally plays quality defensive minutes and/or helps set up other people with shots. Bibby and Jamal are less likely to impact the game positively when their shots are not falling, but their off nights are rare enough to where they are more easily excusable. Marvin, on the other hand, not only is almost never a viable offensive option, but even when his offensive game is not on (which is most of the time), he NEVER impacts the game positively in other ways. Honestly, just doing what Damien does on a daily basis would be a huge improvement for him. It’s easy to look the other way when a typically good player plays a bad game, or when a guy whose game is suffering in one area performs well in other areas. When a guy is contributing NOTHING positive whatsoever, then yes, he deserves all the criticism he gets. More often than not, the Hawks get nothing out of Marvin, when even just a little hustle, defense, rebounding, and a few made open shots would be more than enough. That is inexcusable even for a minimum salary player; even more so for a player who is advertised and paid as if he is part of the “core”.

“Yea Najeh I never understood that. Can you explain why expiring contracts are so valuable to teams? Do they get to spend more in the offseason because of them?”

Actually, it’s usually because they can’t spend that much in the offseason.

Taking the Raptors as an example, they are currently paying out $66 million in salary, $15 million of which goes to Peja, and $5 million of which goes to Reggie Evans (whose contract is also expiring). When both of those players’ contracts (worth $20 million total) come off the books, their team salary next summer will be about $46 million. The current NBA salary cap is about $58 million; assuming it is around that level next summer, they will be able to spend about $12 million to acquire free agents ($58 million minus $46 million). Notice that despite losing $20 million in salary from their books, they only get $12 million worth of spending space. And since they started the offseason under the cap, they would not get to use the mid-level and biannual exceptions which are available to over the cap teams.

On the other hand, the NBA has a rule that says that any time a team over the cap participates in a trade, they have to send out roughly as much salary as they take in. So, for example, an over the cap team can’t trade a $10 million player to another over the cap team for a $5 million player. This means that if the Raptors were to trade Peja and Evans to an over the cap team, they could take back $20 million in salary AND be able to acquire free agents next summer using the biannual exception (assuming they didn’t use it this year) and the mid-level exception. As you can see, this gives them a greater opportunity to acquire quality players to add to their team.

Of course, if they were to simply keep the contracts and let them expire, they would just go into next year with a much lower payroll. If saving money is their primary goal, this is the option they would choose. Some over the cap teams, especially those who are not playoff contenders, start the rebuilding process by acquiring expiring contracts in exchange for players locked in to long-term deals who could help other teams, so that they can clear cap space and playing time for young players.

If Marvin and Mo’ are still hurt, I say put them on IR, start Collins/Powell/or Etan at C every night, plug Wilkens in the 2, and let JC2 and JT get some playing time for the next 2 weeks. We may be surprised with the results.

And at least Marvin and Mo’ would be fully healthy, rather than limping through the season.

PG – Bibby/Teague/Jamal
SG – Wilkens/Jamal/JC2
SF – Josh/Wilkens
PF – Horford/Josh/Powell/Etan
C – Collins/ZaZa/Horford/Powell/Etan

Or start ZaZa for that matter, if he wants to be “the man” so bad. It might wake him up.

And then we have Marvin and Mo’ healed and fresh for the rest of the season.

Marvin is a 6-9 240lb athlete (of sorts), but he is not a basketball player. I’ve said that since UNC days, when he only played 20 mpg off the bench, and then came out based on “potential”.

I think Marvin would benefit from: Letting his knee heal fully. Then going to D-League for 2 months and learn how to play basketball, instead of trying to learn at the highest level. I’m not saying this would work, but it’s worth a shot.

And I say try starting ZaZa, and let Collins come off the bench when we play big. It may wake ZaZa up also. Again, it might not work, but to me it’s worth a shot rather than just saying it wouldn’t work.

Almost baffling that people even still defend Marvin. Dude is a bust…It was bad enough the Hawks passed over great point guards but hell they didn’t even get the best sf from that draft.

MARVIN CANT BE HELPED WITH HIS GAME! HE HAS TWO LEFT FEET AND NO HANDLE! THAT’S WHY HE IS POSITIVELY A COMPLETE BUST! A CHANGE A WILL NOT HELP HIM..HE WILL DRAG HIS TWO LEFT FEET WITH HIM ALONG WITH HIS 10 CENT HEAD……………….
