Auburn Hills, Mich.–Well, so much for that.
– There was a point when it looked like the Pistons had finally stopped making shots and the Hawks would methodically put them away. Except it didn’t happen. “It got out of hand quickly,” Bibby said. “They hit like three or four threes in a row and it was just a rampage of threes that we couldn’t stop.”
– The Pistons scored 39 points in the fourth quarter. If that’s not incredible enough for you, how about: The Pistons scored 39 points in the fourth quarter and T-Mac and Villanueva had 28 of them.
– “You have to give Detroit credit tonight,” L.D. said. “They made shots. Defensively we didn’t same sense of urgency that we did in the third quarter when we held them to 15 points. We completely fell apart in that fourth quarter. We turned the basketball over, they were able to run out on us and we just couldn’t get the job done.”
– The Hawks were down 66-63 with 9:46 to play. Four minutes later they were down 81-66. Usually it’s the good teams that make the Hawks pay for each mistake at winning time but the Pistons managed to do it, too.
– The rundown . . . Detroit: Villanueva made a 3. . . Josh Powell missed a layup. . . . Stuckey made two free throws. . . Smoove missed a forced hook shot. . . . T-Mac made a 3. . . . Smoove made a 3. . . . Stuckey missed a 3. . . . Villanueva stole it from Smoove. . . . Villanueva dunked on the break. . . . Bibby threw it away. . . . T-Mac made a 3.
– Just like the Hawks were down 81-68. They couldn’t get any closer than 11 from there and sent up the white flag down 92-72 with three minutes left. “We turned the ball over a couple of times, took some ill-advised shots and as I’ve explained to the guys all it takes is two or three possessions of taking bad shots and the game can get out of hand,” L.D. said.
– “I looked up at the scoreboard and they were up like 74-66,” Bibby said. “The next time I looked up it was like 80 to 100.”
– In the fourth quarter Detroit made 14 of 25 shots, scored 12 fastbreak points and had 12 points off of turnovers. The Hawks had seven turnovers, leading to 12 Detroit points, so it hardly mattered that they shot 53 percent (8 of 15).
– The Pistons played with desperation while the Hawks seemed to figure they could just make a few plays and pull out a W. The difference probably had something to do with Atlanta generally rolling along without J.J. while Detroit blew that 25-point against the Raptors on Saturday.
– The Pistons may not be the Pistons anymore but people here still care, so that kind of effort gets them dogged out. They saved some face by beating a team with a winning record for the first time.
– “I think we’re a lot better than our record shows, but I desperately wanted to get a win especially after how we played in that Toronto game,” Villanueva said. “I think we did a good job and responded well. I’d say this is what Pistons basketball is all about.”
– They’ve called Villanueva a free agent bust and T-Mac washed up. The Hawks made them look like All-Stars, and not just because of those shots they made in the fourth quarter. Both guys had season-highs in rebounds as Detroit pounded Atlanta 43-31 on the boards.
– Detroit, hardly known for inside muscle, also outscored the Hawks 36-26 in the paint. That’s just the fourth time they’ve managed to do that.
– The Hawks dropped to 12-4 against teams with losing records. They hadn’t lost this kind of game since Nov. 23 at New Jersey, the day after the beatdown from Boston and the day before the famous team meeting.
– Bad night for Jamal. He took just six shots, making one, and had five turnovers to offset four assists. He said his back was bothering him and he’s not sure if he will play Thursday.
– Without the usual scoring punch from Jamal, the Hawks couldn’t find any offense outside of Smoove, Bibby and Al. They combined to make 21 of 42 shots, everyone else was 9 of 26.
– Al was the only guy doing much rebounding for the Hawks.
— Powell gives good effort. If only he were a couple inches taller he might actually collect more of those rebounds he gets his hands on, block some of those challenged shots and finish better at the rim.
– Another one of those games where you wonder if Marvin out there. He missed some shots and then seemed to disappear. It’s hard to know how much the knee is bothering him, though.
– Rip Hamilton had his way with Bibby, Mo, and Wilkins in the first half. He didn’t even need to score in the fourth quarter with T-Mac and Villanueva draining 3s.
– “It got away from us and I don’t know how,” Josh said. “It really started with those three-point shots. T-Mac had an unbelievable game, probably his best game of the year. I think it broke our backs. We did a bad job on the rotations.”

This happens against guards he posts up too

Iso-Marvin
The biggest problem for the Hawks is not Iso-Joe or Iso-Jamal. The biggest problem for the Hawks is Iso-Marvin – when Marvin stands out on the wing by himself picking his nose. We have a motion offense but Marvin is often standing still WAITING FOR THE GAME TO COME TO HIM. That is why he disappears. If the game does not come to him in the form of open jumpshots or easy cuts to the basket, he simply stands around by himself. And when the shot goes up from one of his teammates, he does not head to half-court to guard against the fastbreak, or rush toward the basket to grab a rebound. He stands there until the ball is rebounded. If the Hawks get the rebound he continues to stand there, but if the other team rebounds, then he jogs slowly (waddles) back down court. And when he does move in the motion offense, he does it with no conviction. He jogs through the backcuts.
The Piston’s announcers were pointing out how Stuckey sliced through the lane and back out as he moved on offense. Stuckey got no credit for an assist or a basket. He didn’t even touch the ball. But his quick movement through the lane caused the Hawks to notice him long enough for Charlie V. to recieve a bounce pass and shoot with just enough separation over Al to hit an open shot. Is this too much to ask from Marvin? What good is his height, wingspan, & athleticism if he is not going to use it? I know he plays defense, but he cannot take a vacation on offense.
NO MORE ISO-MARVIN!

Not the greatest rotations I’ve ever seen, but from what I hear, some of it was based on guys being banged up and LD wanting to give them a break unless they were desperately needed. I thought more Teague and Jordan Crawford could’ve been of use tonight. Too bad.

Even with JJ and Jamal playing at high levels this team team couldn’t beat Boston. Remember of the Hawks 10 losses 5 have been by double digits.
You have to add pieces to get better in the off season. The Lakers won the title and still improved their weaknesses. Same with Boston.

“Bad night for Jamal. He took just six shots, making one, and had five turnovers to offset four assists. He said his back was bothering him and he’s not sure if he will play Thursday”
How are we supposed to win a game when you get nothing from you #1(Joe) and #2(Jamal)scoring options…
WHY IS EVERY LOSS ABOUT MARVIN? He is a 10pt a game scorer. When Granger went 3-12 and scored 1 basket against Marvin, Or Iggy’s 4-12, I don’t remeber some of these posts. I have adjusted my expectations to Good “D”,8-10pts and 5-8rbs.

No. Marvin doesn’t put up those numbers every night. He’s had so many pathetic and underachieving games that I can’t even point out his numbers. It’s more like 4 points and 2 rebounds in 25 minutes. And why would you rush Mo and Marvin back in the first place? It’s not like we’ve had a tough schedule so far.
It’s this team’s fault for suffering every time it has 3 days off to prepare for a game. How do you rest for 3 days then lose to freaking Detroit?

I read all these comments because I wanted to find out how the Hawks lost to Detroit. What emerges is:
1. They had no real desire to compete with Detroit for the win.
2. At least one player, Marvin Williams goes through the motions, whether from design or gross incompetence or #3 .
3. Hawks are playing injured, Crawford and Williams (and obviously Joe Johnson).
4. Lack of a true, dominant, rebounding, running, offensive and defensive threat type center.
5. Porous mental attitude.
Against Boston……we are now in the same position as Detroit was, embarrassed, presumably motivated, against the odds. Boston led Hawks by a lot (20 points?) after one quarter last game. The Hawks have absolutely nothing to lose. No one expects them to win.
Look for Josh Smith to have an explosive performance, Horford to rise to the occasion. If ten rotation players can contribute and run an uptempo game, they’ll win. Drew will have to be sharp, sustitutions to match situations, catch trends as soon they develop, use timeouts, draw up plays that work. Boston does all of this….they are an “intelligent” team. See Garnett’s last second play against (New Jersey?) earlier this week. If for instance, the other team tries to take the ball out of backcourt after a basket, and a Boston defender notices only one player is available to take the inbound pass, a Boston defender may appear to HOUND the inbound pass to force a time violation. . That play,is just as important as a score as it takes away points from the opponent.
All of the Hawks should be schooled in every single way they can help the team. An hour a day, watching tapes and listening to the lecture. Then they should be judged on how well they integrate these points into their play.
Drew may be a good coach. He continues to say many of the right things. Now, he has to make the Hawks do the right things, and when he notices a breakdown, he has to correct it immediately.
And please, don’t lose anymore to Detroit. Show some desire against every team ,regardless of who they are.
One other underlying factor….The Hawks really don’t like cold, rainy or snowy weather…never have…..I’m counting that as a factor…. .
.

LOL @ Jeje 11:02 post.
Yeah, the schedule is tough, but this loss caught me completely off guard. The game I was worried about, was the Charlotte game on Friday night.
I was thinking that if we had a real bad showing vs Boston on TNT, that the fans may bypass the Charlotte game altogether.
But with us losing to Detroit, it not only takes some of the momentum away going into Boston, it sets up a situation in which we could all of a sudden have a 3 game losing streak by Saturday, if we play in front of a lifeless crowd vs Charlotte and lose. Hopefully that won’t happen though.
We had won a game vs Orlando that most everyone thought we’d lose . . and lost a game vs Detroit that most everyone thought we’d win. If given the choice of who to beat, I’d definitely take the Orlando win. But we blew a chance to capitalize off that win, by beating the Pistons.

A person’s draft postion is about a GM, not the player. there are a ton of high draft picks that didn’t pan-out. The draft is a risk, that is why they call it the “LOTTERY”.
The Hawks drafted the Josh 18th, so to me they balance-out.

sam’l,
Despite all the issues, Hawks were only down 3 going into the fourth quarter because we held Detroit to 15 points in the 3rd.
But just like the Spurs game, we fell apart in the fourth. 6 or 7 turnovers, some bad shot selection, and slow rotations defensively.
As for our center position, the Hawks have a problem.
I am big fan of Horford, but it appears to me that he is slowly conditioning his mind that he is a PF (and he has played well there). However, when we need him to play center and be physical, he is not doing it as consistently as he did earlier in his career.
I’m also wondering if Josh is thinking of himself as more SF than PF.

I just don’t care anymore about this team as currently constructed.
REBOUND and PLAY INSIDE!
Like Barkley said:
“You can NOT win, without the ball!”
Until someone on this team embraces rebounding? We will NEVER win a thing!
Go find Dennis Rodman. If Marvin could do one thing well? I would take 18 boards per night. Be known for something? Anything?
I said this after watching 20 Games:
1. Play BIG Inside, I don’t want my two bigs shooting made jumpers and playing small.
2. I don’t care if the shots are falling, it’s about an IDENTITY!
I get sick of watching 7′ Nowitski shooting fade aways – it’s appalling to see all that height playing small ball. It’s a waste of DNA. Dallas will NEVER beat the Lakers, when their tallest players is dropping 3 pointers!
Who will REBOUND on THIS team?

Rufus1,
You continue to defend the guy, but there is no defense. When he signed his new deal, Sund stated that we expect Marvin to continue to progress, and become a better player. that has not happened. Al has gotten better, Josh has gotten better, but Marvin has not. I wonder why?
You actually stated yesterday that we lost the game because of Drew not bringing Marvin back in the game because Powell was getting abused. Well we lost for a number of reasons. One of the key points in the game was when we went on a run in the third quarter, and cut the lead to 4(I think). We came down and tried to go to Marvin in the post against Rip Hamilton, and Marvin could not hold his post position, against a guy much smaller than him, let the guy come around him for a steal, then they went dwon and hit a three. Then we come back down court, work the ball around to Marvin for a wide open (uncontested) three, and Marvin misses (as usual). They come back down court and score again. Two plays by Marvin caused us to go from down 4 to down 9 or 10. That is where the ballgame was actually lost. Remember that? But you wonder why Drew did not put him back in the game (LOL).

Detroit is a blue collar team who desperately needed a win. They came out to play, we toyed with them and paid the price. Sadly this is what, 3rd or 4th time in a row in Detroit.
We didn’t show up, it’s not a new thing, it’s not the end of the world, but it is unfortunately, Hawks basketball.

I don’t think the wheels are falling off. It was the typical bad, unexplainable loss that this team has been known to have.
But it was exactly this time last year when a real bad loss @ Denver started our worst 2 week stretch of the season.
The Knicks have an absolutely brutal stretch of games coming up. We’ll find out if they’re forreal in these next 2 weeks. We just need to hold the fort and win the games we should win.
It would be acceptable ( to me ) if the Hawks were at least 20 – 14 going into the New Years Eve game vs Oklahoma City. Some of you wouldn’t like it though, because it means that the Hawks would go 4 – 4 in these next 8 games.
