Auburn Hills, Mich.–The Pistons are bad. Historically bad. Blowing-a-25-point-lead-to-the-Raptors-at-home-bad. So bad that Magic called them out when he was back in East Lansing the other day:
As for the current Pistons, Johnson said they were a long way from the teams he faced in consecutive NBA Finals in the late 1980s.
“Too many individuals,” Johnson said. “You have to get back to what made them great, and that’s defense and rebounding. … What we see now is a team that’s soft. People from Detroit and Michigan can accept losing, but not the way they’re losing.”
The Hawks should win this game and the temptation is to say it won’t tell us anything about them. But the thing the Hawks almost always do win this kind of game. Their troubles against the good teams have been well documented, and they have to start winning more games like Thursday in Boston to be considered legit contenders in the East. But until the Hawks figure that part out, there’s something to be said for handling their business against the league’s also-rans.
The Hawks have 12 Ws and just there Ls against teams that currently have losing records: Milwaukee, New Jersey and Phoenix. Of those teams, the Nets are the only squad with no real hope of turning things around.
So chances are the Hawks will handle Detroit tonight, then move on to the next one. That won’t earn accolades but neither should it be completely discounted.
Michael Cunningham

Damien
December 14th, 2010
8:48 pm
The offense in that first half was absolutely horrid. Too many guys who aren’t that great offensively were trying to do too much. Too many hero plays by Josh, too much 1 vs. 1 by Jamal. Too many shots for our role players, and not enough in the paint. We need to get some post-ups for Al going. Also, where the hell is the pick and pop or the pick and roll? I’m guessing that the main reason why we didn’t see many plays run was due to the fact that Bibby missed a lot of the first half with foul trouble. Even though Bibby is a liability on defense, he at least knows how to run plays and how to get the ball to Al to high percentage shots, as well as how to keep the ball away from Jamal or Josh when they are trying to be heroes. On the defensive end, L.D. really needs to stop putting smaller, slower guys on Rip. He can just shoot right over them, or blow by them. It’s just a bad idea. The team needs to get it together quick, because they are letting the Pistons make them look like a d-league team with all of the bonehead plays and lack of execution.

December 14th, 2010
8:55 pm
The Hawks are getting beaten significantly on the glass. The pistons hold a 19-12 advantage, and a lot of that has to do with the bad shot selection. So many times in that quarter, I saw Josh try some extremely low percentage post-ups with no one else even having a chance to get close enough to be in rebound position. Also, Jamal’s shot selection was pretty bad too, and Mo Evans and Zaza pachulia basically just need to stop shooting the ball, altogether, unless they have a wide open layup (in Zaza’s case, even is he has a wide open layup, he might get blocked by the rim). Maybe the Hawks should give Powell a few minutes, since Jordan Crawford is inactive, just for a change of pace. With Josh and Jamal out of the game, I think we may be able to run an actual structured play.
Chillin on paradise island.

JeJe, I don’t know you can even say that Smoove showed up tonight. He may have racked up some points (on 8-17 shooting), but he made just as many mistakes, if not more mistakes, than he did positive things. He took a lot of bad shots, didn’t rotate properly, and rushed things too many times, trying to be a hero. I didn’t like what i saw from Josh tonight. Bibby was OK. He made some bad passes down the stretch, but he at least hit his open shots. I can’t really blame him for the foul trouble, since L.D. basically set him up for failure with the matchups. The only positive I see from this game was Horford’s performance. He was pretty solid on both ends and rebounded the ball very well.

I mean seriously, considering how much the Hawks use a big lineup now, if the Hawks’ only two small forwards were Damien Wilkins (defense) and T-Mac (offense), I think they would be just fine. Let T-Mac play his 20 minutes or so to give an offensive spark when necessary, and let Damien play his 20 minutes or so to give a defensive spark when necessary. A team with as much talent and scoring at other positions as the Hawks have really only need solid role players at SF. And T-Mac showed more in this game than Marvin has shown in his entire career.

Sorry to say, part of this lost is on the head of LD. In the fourth quarter, LD let Powell stay in the game too long. Powell played for 7-8 straight minutes in the 4th, and he had a +/- of -12 at that point. CharlieV abused Powell. And when Josh would try to help out on defense, it would leave McGrady wide open. Believe it or not, LD waited too long to bring Marvin back in the game.
Also, the reason why the ball went to Josh more than Al late in the game was Al was gassed! Al played the entire 3rd quarter, and majority of the 4th quarter (until LD put the bench in with 3 minutes left). Josh was actually fouled on two of those plays, but didn’t get the call. So if only 2 players are having good nights, and one of them don’t have any more energy because his legs are gone. Who is left to go to besides Josh?? Josh still shot 46% from the field, and only had 2 turnovers.
Also, I love Wilkins attitude, but he has to start being more selfish. He’s over passing and not being aggressive. He should’ve had at least 15 points tonight, but he will bypass wide open attempts/lanes to pass it to someone covered for a harder attempt.

I will say this — every team does have games in every season that they lose to inferior teams. In an 82 game season, teams are not always going to have their A game against every opponent, and every now and then a good team will get beat by a bad team because the bad team brought their A game and the good team brought their C- game. It happens.
With that said, even when good teams bring their C- game and lose, they usually don’t lose to bottom five teams by 20 points. But as we have seen over the last few years, this is the kind of thing these Hawks do. Just when they start looking like they could be putting it all together, they lose a game like this to remind us how huge the gulf is between them and the legit contenders in this league.

lewis,
You’re right that stuckey would start at PG for the Hawks, but just about any PG from another team would start for the Hawks. Bibby and Teague are some of the worst PGs in the entire league. One of them is a glorified spot-up shooter and the other is a timid slasher with one of the worst jump shots in the league. Seriously, there probably isn’t even one other starting PG in the league who wouldn’t be an upgrade over what we have that position. Even Fisher in his late 30s is probably an upgrade.

Randiferous, are you serious? Josh had bad attempts because he drove to the lane and didn’t get the call? Most of his misses were around the baskets AFTER drawing contact. You said he made more mistakes than positive plays. Yet he was the only Hawk going to the line, and he only had 2 turnovers (one that was really Mo Evans fault, after Mo drop the outlet pass). Josh was 2 for 9 around the basket in the lane. And on at least 4 of those misses he was fouls. For LD to come out on the court (LD is the hardest coach to upset from what I’ve seen), tells you Josh was being hacked all night. Also you said Josh didn’t rotate right on defense? Did you not see when Josh did rotate on defense, it left McGrady open for 3s, because the next man didn’t rotate to cover his man.

Also, there is no reason for Mo Evans to be getting this much time, and JC2 can’t even get in uniform to get in the game. The way Mo Evans is playing, I don’t want to see him in the game until after Joe comes back from his injury. In the last 6 games, Mo is averaging more fouls (1.8 a game) than he is points, rebounds, assists, or steals. And that is as a starter! For the season the man is shooting 32%! How are you shooting 32% from the field, and still get the chance to start? JC2 is shooting a higher percentage from beyond the arc, than Mo is shooting from the field. Mo better practice his Spanish, Greek, or Italian, because playing like this, he’s going to have to get a passport for his next contract.

I hate having to rely on the failures of other teams to keep us afloat in the standings, but I definitely hope that Denver beats Orlando tonight, so that we can still be in the thick of things in the southeast division.
Also, I have to point out one other thing. The Knicks actually have a better record than we do right now. I never would have guessed that that would have happened during this season. I know that the Knicks schedule has been somewhat of a cakewalk lately, but for the most part, the Hawks have had a fairly weak schedule, as well. We’ve had a lot of back-to-back games and lots of games in short periods of time, but most of the opponents have been below .500, so I can’t really say that our schedule is the reason why our record is somewhat disappointing so far.

Rod, in the first half, who’s man was Rip? According to LD, it was Bibby’s man, because LD’s game plan was for Bibby and Marvin to switch on pick and rolls between Rip and Stuckey. Rip scored most of his points from the free throw line, where Bibby and Teague put him after switches. Rather Marvin is a baller or not, the fact is the game was lost in the fourth quarter with Powell in the game. And the way Mo, Jamal, and Zaza were playing, who else could he bring back in the game besides Marvin? Marvin isn’t a stopper, but the line up was better with him in the game than it was with Powell. Powell had 2 personal fouls, to go with 2 turnovers, and only 2 rebounds while he was in the game. As bad as Marvin may be, he’s still better than Powell (and Mo, and Jamal when Jamal’s shot isn’t falling).

O’Brien,
In terms of not being physical, I don’t think that was much of an issue tonight. It was the perimeter mismatches and lack of offensive execution that killed the team tonight. Our interior defense wasn’t bad overall. The help defense could have been better, but the Detroit bigs really didn’t hurt us in the paint. Al definitely did his part. Not that Ben Wallace is any kind of offensive force, but he was basically a nonfactor tonight, and Al won that matchup by a landslide, as well as any matchup that he had during the game. Josh didn’t get bullied in the post either.
As far as things go on the offensive end, I don’t think that Al posted up enough, but I’m not sure if that was really his fault. I saw him get low-post position on several locations and wait for the ball, but he almost never received a pass in those situations. The Hawks did go to Josh a lot down low, but to be honest, I really didn’t like those matchups for him. Josh converted on a couple, but posting up Josh against Monroe and Ben Wallace just isn’t that great of an idea, considering both men are bigger and stronger than him, and he doesn’t have a great low-post game to begin with. I’m really surprised that L.D. didn’t try to take advantage of Al against Villanueva and Monroe. Outside of Ben Wallace, the pistons really don’t have any elite post defenders and Al typically converts on a very high percentage of his post-up attempts. At any rate, I don’t think physicality was the issue tonight.
There were some bad matchups that really did us in tonight. Bibby, Jamal, and Teague on Hamilton were all bad matchups for us. Any of our point guards on Stuckey is also a bad matchup. Stuckey is just too quick for Bibby, and he’s too strong from someone like Teague or Jamal. T-mac is horrible matchup for Josh and for any of our guards, outside of maybe Mo Evans.
What I’m really saying is, I don’t think that Twin or Etan would have made a big difference on the defensive end tonight, although I wouldn’t have minded seeing Collins play alongside Al, rather than Powell in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

There was just too much going wrong for the Hawks. Jamal was just butt-awful with the basketball in his hands. He turned it over and couldn’t hit a shot all night. Marvin disappeared. The bench stood around and watched Jamal stink it up. Al played too long without breaks. Josh tried to do too much. Yet they still had a chance to win it, but they lost focus (MENTAL TOUGHNESS!) in the fourth.
You can nick-pick at Drew’s coaching – and he is not without fault tonight – but the players just did not come to play. They played too passive on offense and defense. They played with energy when Detroit GAVE them openings. The Hawks did not come in prepared to own the Pistons.

If Marvin and Mo’ are still hurt, I wish we could just let them sit 2 weeks to heal, sign Jarvis Hayes, and let he, Wilkens, Jordan, and JT get some playing time. But since we brought Sy over, we are at the max 15 guys, so we’re kind of stuck.
But maybe Mo’ and Marvin stink, and it has nothing to do with their injuries….

O’Brien, we can’t put it all on Powell, I didn’t. Remember, I said I put it on LD. If a player is having that big of a negative impact on the game, why leave him in so long in the fourth quarter? As I said, Marvin didn’t have a great game (or a good game). But Powell in the game was mismatch city, because he couldn’t guard CharlieV. And that left Smoove leaving McGrady to help Powell out. Powell couldn’t rebound because of his knee. Powell should have played 4-5 minutes in the 4th at the most.
LD has to learn how to win games in the 4th quarter. Rather its the substitutions he uses, or going away from the motion offense. LD is having a hard time beating ANY team in the last 8 minutes of the game. The longer that happens, the more you have to think the Hawks are winning more games off of superior talent than anything else. Talent win games in the first three quarters (blow outs). Coaching win games in the last 10 minutes of the 4th quarter. And the Hawks have lost to the Jazz, Heat, Spurs, Detroit, Phoenix, Orlando, and New Jersey in the last 10 minutes of a game. That’s coaching, not the talent.

SteveW,
I’m a bit worried about that game in the Garden on Thursday too, but I don’t think the matchups will be exactly what you are predicting. Here’s how I’m guessing the Hawks will match up:
Bibby vs. Ray Allen (advantage: Boston)
Mo Evans vs. Rondo (advantage: Boston)
Smoove vs. Pierce (advantage: none – both players have an advantage over the other on the offensive end)
Al vs. KG (advantage: Atlanta)
Collins vs. Shaq (advantage: Boston)
In terms of the bench, I don’t feel good about us on the perimeter at all. Nate Robinson is a nightmare matchup for any of our perimeter players. On the interior, I don’t expect the boston bench bigs to be too much trouble, but Fat Davis probably has an advantage over Powell, and Zaza definitely doesn’t have an advantage over anyone. It worries me when we have tough games on national television, because not only is it an opportunity for the media to mock the team more than they already do, but it’s also an easy means of pointing out the team’s glaring flaws, which are most apparent against dominant teams. It’s basically a lose-lose situation for the Hawks, as far as the media goes. If the Hawks win, analysts will just say that it was a fluke and the other team didn’t bring their game that night. If the Hawks lose, they’ll just be ignored or mocked as usual, with no surprise.
At any rate, the boston game will probably be the toughest of the season so far. They are, by far, the best team we will have faced. San Antonio has a better record, but I think the Celtics have better pieces and more ways to hurt us than the Spurs do.

Ramon,
You are changing the question. Originally you asked if the team comes out unprepared to play, then who’s fault is it. I responded that it was the players fault. Regardless if it is on the road or at home, the Hawks do not come out prepared to play every game. Drew made this one of his top priorities when he took over, but tonight is evidence that this team still has to grow-up mentally. So I continue to contend that the responsibility is on the players.
As to the Hawks fourth quarter play, I am not real enthusiastic about Drew’s coaching down the stretch. He seems a little ‘deer in the headlights’. I think he will grow out of that with a little more experience. You asked if LD has really proven to be that different from Woody in the final minutes. I would say that LD is very different than Woody because he is not unimaginatively stubborn.

I forgot to mention something as far as the Celtics game goes on thursday. The Celtics play the Knicks on the road on Wednesday night, and Shaq is looking to play in that game. If he plays against the Knicks, it’s likely that he won’t play against the Hawks on Thursday, since the team is trying to rest him on the second night of back-to-backs, similar to what Coach Pop has done with Duncan in the past. This is not to say that Shaq won’t play against the Hawks, since he may miss the Knicks game and play on thursday instead, but if Shaq sits out, it changes the matchups and our lineups significantly, as well as changes the gameplan. With Shaq out, we could abuse the Celtics front line.

I saw that too. Rip was having his way. However, I think this loss goes deeper than a mismatch issue. The Hawks could have imposed their will on Detroit, but did not. Maybe it was coaching tonight that started the rock over the cliff, but the players added to its downward momentum.
