Hawks 116, Nets 101

Greetings, all-

This is Ken Sugiura filling in and giving Michael Cunningham a rare and well-deserved night off. Hope you all enjoyed the game.

A pretty impressive night, my first time watching Larry Drew’s club in person. Obviously, ball movement and the shooting stuck out, particularly given a) they were playing the back end of a back-t0-back in which they’d shot 38.8 percent in the first game; b) were playing their fourth game in five days; c) I’m not sure about a c. Actually, here’s a c. The Nets a pretty decent defensive bunch. Their defensive field-goal percentage coming in was 44.8 percent.

The lineup of Mike Bibby/Marvin Williams/Josh Smith/Al Horford/Jason Collins, which debuted  is now 2-0. I imagine Drew will keep this lineup. He likes the size mismatches it presents at the 2 and the 3 (Williams and Smith), that it makes the opponent match up the Hawks rather than vice versa. He also likes that it frees up Horford to play the 4 and not have to wrestle the likes of Brook Lopez all night.

Drew on Smith at the 3: “Most 3’s will not be able to match up against him especially when he posts them. He’s learned to be a pretty good paleyr in the post when I can get him down there, but it does pose a problem for the opposition because they have to make a decision on whether to match up big against him or like last night (against Orlando), they matched up Quentin Richardson and I went right into the post at him and they had to change the matchup.”

On Horford at 4: “I think he likes the fact that he doesn’t have to get down there, every single night, bang against somebody that’s bigger and stronger. It certainly relieves him of that, puts him in a position where he can be a little fresher at the end of the game.”

- Jamal Crawford on the game: “I think we know that anybody can lead our team in scoring on a given night. We’re O.K. with that.”

- Also: “I feel a lot more comfortable (in the offense) right now.” He was 11 for 17 with six assists.

- Hawks were able to slow Lopez down (somewhat). He had 15 before halftime, nine after. But he had 32 the first game, a 107-101 Nets win Nov. 23. Drew: “I thought our guys did a good job in making some adjustments during the course of the game in defending him and in defending the pick-and-roll with Devin Harris.” (This is probably not that important, but I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a coach give credit to the players for making the adjustments, or if I have, it hasn’t been very often. This is even less important: I was interviewing former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel once and he was talking about something like that, about some schematic or personnel change the Giants had made in their season that had them playing better and he said something like, “After we made that switch,” then he paused, and said, “After I made that switch…” I think I can safely I’ve never heard that before.)

- We’re obviously way off from this becoming reality, but I imagine some of you must be wondering — what happens if the Hawks keep up this unselfish style and start really playing well without Joe Johnson? It’d be challenging for any player, I’d think, and any team to re-adjust to their lead dog coming back, but I might think it could be especially so here. For one thing, players look to Johnson as that lead dog and so it’ll be a change in mindset for everyone when he returns.

- Smith on his jump shot: “I work hard on my jump shot. I’m not surprised if anything goes in. I assume it’s going to go in every time. I’m a confident player.” (Then he laughed a little bit.)

Its funny, if Smoove can guard the opposing SF where they don’t have career nights, this line up just may work. I know people are concerned with Smoove being on the perimeter in the offense. However, with a motion offense, it allows Horford (who’s great in the mid-range) to spot up at the weak side elbow, and for Smoove to post up on the block. This allows Collins to be in rebound position on other block, and the guards to be spotting up for a kick out.

KW, Damien has taken ANY minutes Crawford could even think about getting.

Am I the only one who’s disappointed anytime they see Evans come in the game besides Wilkens?

DiTto Ramon. JJ is gonna have to adapt to the offense like JC1 is or it will be clashes. 4-1 w/o is very impressive and they are playing really unselfish ball.

Evans had a chance to really show and prove he is “undervalued” but he has only shown and proved to be a bum. Wilkins has heart and defensive prowess.

I know his minutes have been taken, but I didn’t see him on the bench Monday or Tuesday.

I hope Joe will be the one making the adjustment to the Hawks’ new found unselfish style, and not the other way around. There are times when the Hawks need Joe to take the lead dog role, but for the most part, they are better off sharing the ball and running it through Smoove and Al.

And if Jordan is not going to get minutes, the Hawks need to send him to the D-League.

I wonder why LD isnt starting Jordan Crawford at SG while JJ is out?? If Jordan cant get it done, THEN he should bench him but dont automatically assume it CANT get it done when he is never given the opportunity! The ONLY 1 thing LD could take a page from Woody is to allow the rookie to ONLY START GAMES WHILE JJ IS OUT and allow HIM his set minutes like Woody use to do with Royal Ivey. This would allow Jordan some MUCH NEEDED playing time cause as it stands now, he is just rotting on the bench for NO GOOD REASON AT ALL!!

I believe The Hawks will be better when Joe returns because LD will be able to sit Marvin and start JJ instead.Marvin really has me scratching my head. One or two games,he is lights out,and then he disappears.I believe they,The Hawks, are going to have to make some hard decisions regarding MW,JT,and ZZ….I am hoping we can package this group and get something in return.Wilkins,Twin, and E.Thomas are giving more and we really could use a more physical and taller pointguard.I like what CLD is doing with this team.I also believe Jordan’s time will come at the expence of Evans, who is hurt or he is not ready for prime time.

JOE Had adjusted before he got hurt . Its Marvin,Mo,Teague and Zaza who need to adjust when Joe come back. Loss of minutes, I will keep saying play the seven ,and Thomas, Most seven footers in the league are space takers . Collins have proved he will handle them enough for a Hawks win. Watch and see

My memo to Rick Sund: First of all, you are stealing money just like Marvin Williams so it is easy to see why you are in love with him. This team will be much better when both of you take a hike and take the ASG with you. On the other hand, if you can read this is what you should be doing now.

Call Memphis: What will it take to get Marc Gasol? If the answer does not include Smoove, Al, or Joe it gets done bottomline. If rebuffed move on to next question.

Next question: What will it take to get OJ Mayo since he is currently on your bench and I am willing to offer Teague and Zaza for Mayo. If they ask for a sweetner such as a pick tell them you will get back to them but keep this idea in your back pocket because Mayo would be a better project at PG than Teague.

Next, if nothing is done there.

Call Washington: What will it take to get Javal McGee? If the answer does not include Joe, Smoove, Al, Jamal, multiple 1st round picks or taking on Gilbert’s contract the deal get’s done bottomline.

Next, if nothing get’s done.

Call Houston: I will offer you Zaza, and a future 2nd rd pick for Brad Miller.

Next, if nothing get’s done.

Call Cleveland: Offer Zaza and Marvin for Varejao and Moon.

Next, if nothing get’s done and noone will entertain your deals.

Call the Kings and do that deal Teague for Thompson and apologize for not doing it earlier.

Lastly,

I would not do what you do which is hope something great falls in your lap then when it doesn’t tell lies about some magical core that we don’t believe in. I have learned that you make things happen not just let them happen but you are obviously not a winner in mindset. Marvin Williams can’t even dominate at the SG position when he is 6″8 to 6″9 the guy is pretty much useless. Zaza is far more useless than Jason Thompson and we can all see that Jamal is better as backup PG than Teague will ever be. You are a disgrace but I hope you live a long life being a GM/Politician you lying scum.

wow strong words mr.superior.. but i like your proposals especially the Mayo trade considering Zaza is useless and Teague has no inner dog at all..

Anyhow, It seems this big lineup (Bibby/Marvin/Smoove/Boss/Twin) will only be used by LD when the opponent team has a “legit” center (ie. dwight and brook) who is an offensive nightmare down the block. So this big lineup would be the exception not the general rule, meaning when everbody’s healthy, i’m sure LD will stick with the Bibby/JJ/Marvin/Smoove/Boss as the starting lineup.

I’m really happy the Hawks are playing better and seem to have found a working formula … but these recent events raise the question once again: if the ASG was not going to spend money to upgrade the team in other areas, why re-sign JJ in the first place? Was it the quirks and oddities of the salary structure, a wait-a-while-and-see attitude on roster construction, or just laziness?

Once again good move LD for starting hamburger last night, from here on out collins should starte every game even when joe come back, marvin give this team absolutely nothing, and i always here guys complaining about zaza at least he is a scrapper around the boards and play hard every time he’s out there on the court, you need that from a second unit big, and mo play hard 2 it’s just his shot’s is off along with teague who my opinion just have not really had the opportunity 2 develop yet, but marvin no excuse 6year in the league and every year his game regress and for the second pick in the draft there should be a lot more energy from M.I.A marvin.

Pinoy hawks I DISAGREE collin should starte every game regardless he free horford 2 play his natural position, and josh 2 dominate SF in the post plus the hawks with a bigger line up look much stronger and better on defense, when marvin starte the team always look sluggish and get off 2 a horrible starte, defense when championship and collins give this team and inside present on defense.

The blog monster got me. I had a good post we’ll let me start off by saying great game josh you are the best player on this team when you man up. JJ shouldn’t have problems but he might cause he is not a lead but gets paid like one. Like rashard in seattle only difference is the hawks don’t have to scrap the team to draft a alpha we have two here already. Only trade i’ll do with memphis a be to solve our problems of weakness for now and the future. That a be for conley, gasol, and tony allen 4 duck,za, teague, and jamal. We shed dirt we don’t need and we get our starting point and center. Memphis isn’t sold on conely allen is expendable

It is time for coach to keep this lineup together. Collins adds a lot of value to this team. All he needs to do is stand there and raise his arms, and that is all the defense majority of big men in this league do. He needs to play against SA and Duncan. But playing him at center, frees Josh and Al to do their thing. Great move by LD

It’s amazing what can be accomplished when you play team ball. Marvin is content with getting a
paycheck. He is due for another good game in 10 days. He does not even want to be a part of the offense on a consistent basis. He may have to go to Europe to continue his pro carreer, as I doubt
any NBA team would want to pay his salary considering his lack of production.

KS what’s up, interesting comments by JC1…I was thinking the same thing. He looked like his old self last night…very decisive with the ball…HE IS VERY DANGEROUS…when he has it got going like that…and he is really stepping it up on defense…he did his thaaang last night.

ANOTHER GRITTY DETERMINE EFFORT BY THE HAWKS…WAY TO SHOW SOME TENACITY AND PERSAVERENCE…KEEP IT UP…now you playing some ball!!!

***********************************
KS, it may turn out like the Magic a couple of years ago in when they blew through the East in the playoffs with the backup guard, then Van Gundy brought back Nelson in the finals and it completely changed the team – in a bad way.

If JJ comes back and starts his “dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble between the legs, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble between the legs, dribble, dribble, etc,” routine, it will definitely ruin what these guys have going on right now.

JJ is sitting on the bench watching this success, and hopefully he knows this . . .

Marvin
MO
Zaza
Thomas
Pick and/or trade exception for

Butler and Heywood

Or

Crawford
Mo
Zaza
Thomas

for Butler and Heywood.

We all agreed that Mo, Zaza bring nothing to this team. Marvin can go too or at least needs to be brought off the bench. Anyone else playing SF will be an upgrade!
Everyone agrees this big line up is better, think how much better it would be with Heywood at centre. Not dissing Twin who has stepped up on defense, but someone with more of a offensive threat would not hurt.

Good win for the Hawks last night.

I’ve got to give LD his props for changing the starting line up.

The line up with Bibby/Marvin/Josh/Al/Collins is very effective.

Also I like the fact that he gave JC1 some time at the point with that line up as well.

I still would like to see better defense on a consistent bases out of the Hawks, however the team is playing well.

Friday the Hawks are in San Antonio Tony Parker and Manu will have a field day with this defense. Look for a blow out.

After watching Twin play for the past few games, and after watching Smoove play sf, I’ve come to this conclusion:

Jamal/Marvin/Damien/Powell/Zaza
Teague/Etan/JC1

From here on out! After JJ comes back of course. LOL

Well its never as good as it seems when its good and never as bad as it seems when its bad. We have to remember that Marvin is hurting. He did put a string of games together where he was effective scoring, so its not like we haven’t seen flashes. I’m not overly concerned with him on offense. He needs to score enough to be a threat, preferably from three to open up the floor. Im worried about his defense and his rebounding. If Marvin showed the level of activity that Wilkins has shown, his role as a starter could be better justified.

Mike is back

darrell starks, I agree on your 7:07 am post. Collins should start…Al got that money mid-range jump shot now…which is better suited for the PF position.

If Josh can improve his post play…the way he has improved his jump shot…HE COULD OWN THE WORLD AT THE SF POSITION…he needs to keep trusting LD.

Collins is looking better as the season progresses…with his added conditioning…he has responded well…in the limited time he has played…I would definitely like to see him get more starts…and Eton get more play…Zaza just isn’t physical enough…the lane open up…the minute he comes in the game.

I just hope we go ahead sign DWilkins for the remainder of the season…Dude give us an extra punch on defense…he is a seasoned Vet…we need to keep him.

Great win by the Hawks, especially after winning a close game in Orlando the night before.

I know it’s cliche, but the Hawks have shown a lot of maturity this season in winning games they wouldn’t have won even last year. Credit to Coach Drew for realizing that perhaps Horford is best when playing at the 4, which may make things easier for him Friday at San Antonio.

JC1 makes a great point when he stated that anyone can lead the team in scoring, and I hope Josh Smith remembers that the next time his shot isn’t going down lol. I’m just glad that they are finally taking advantage of the multiple options they have on offense.

For all of the people commenting on whether or not JJ will have a hard time adjusting upon his return, remember that he was the lead dog for years because he HAD to be, especially as players like Josh, Horford, and Marvin were still getting adjusted to the NBA game.

interesting thoughts. i hadn’t considered the possibility of keeping jason collins in the lineup when johnson gets back. i could see that working. the one thing is, when you have smith on the perimeter guarding the other 3, it negates his ability to block shots and rebound, although it does mean you’ve got smith guarding the other team’s 3, which might even that out.
as for jc2, he was on the bench in street clothes. i saw him doing conditioning work after the game.

The offense and overall chemistry looks more fluid without Joe Johnson. But because of that ill-advised contract that the Spirit Group gave him, we’re stuck with him for now. I agree with many on this blog that when he comes back, move Marvin to the bench and keep the line-up as is. Boss looks way more comfortable and natural playing the 4. And if Smoove continues to develop his mid-rage game, lookout!

i_am_soulstar , thanks…glad to hear that!!

KS, just because Josh plays the SF…doesn’t mean…he has to always guard the SF…he has always been a high energy guy on defense…he will still find a way to get some block shots.

However, I think LD will stick with his starting lineup…unless we are playing a team with size and length…hopefully he will reconsider…this team is still evolving.
