Memphis Grizzlies at Atlanta Hawks: No go for Joe Johnson (Update: J.J. to have surgery, miss 4-6 weeks)

Update: The Hawks announced that Joe Johnson will have arthroscopic surgery to remove “loose bodies” from the elbow. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Johnson woke up with discomfort Tuesday and underwent tests later in the day. Johnson sought a second opinion today from Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala. Andrews will perform the surgery.

“This is something that clearly had to be looked at,” Drew said before the surgery was announced. “As of yesterday, he could not extend his arm.”

Drew said Mo Evans would start in Johnson’s place tonight vs. Memphis. He said Jamal Crawford and possibly rookie Jordan Crawford would see increased playing time.

Johnson had played in all 18 games this season and had missed just eight games due to injury since the 2007-08 season. His injury comes as the Hawks face a difficult stretch of the schedule this month that includes road games against Miami, Orlando, San Antonio, Boston and New Orleans.

“I certainly have to make some adjustments because he is a big part of what we do,” Drew said. “We do have a lot of motion [offense], but he is still the guy who breaks the defense down and can go find his shot when he wants to.”

MC (ill) is out

And I don’t mean the good kind of ill MC. No post after the game today, blog people. I’m struggling tonight. Catch up with you tomorrow.

MC – hope you feel better soon.

Joe needs to sit to get to 100% Hopefully the 3 days off so far followed by 3 days might put him back in time for Miami healthy. Main thing is to get healthy regardless of if he’s back for MIA and ORL. Long term is more important than right now.

Jordan should see some court time tonight. Should be interesting to see how he fares. Also hope to see Teague showing some confidence. Both are keys to our long term future if all goes well.

With Joe out of the lineup tonight, I expect to see Al and Josh carry most of the offensive load amongst the starters. Jamal will likely get a lot of shots too (as usual). I’m curious to see how much playing time Jordan Crawford will get. This should be interesting.

So Mo will get minutes at SG and backup SF? If I’m LD, I would have started Jordan. The team usually starts flat (and they did), and I think Jordan (Allspark as northcyde called him) would not have been flat.

I hope LD finds minutes for JC2.

Meanwhile, Hawks looking stagnant already. Time Out LD

Joe being out for 4-6 weeks should be good for the Hawks. We’ll see more ball movement, and we’ll not have to see the iso joe. More guys will get time at the 2 position, and I think this team will be better without him.

Well . . . some of you wanted him gone, so now he’s gone . . hopefully just until the 1st of the year. To me, the guys that must step up and pick up the slack, are Jeff Teague and Marvin Williams. If those two step up, we may survive December with a .500 record. If not, we could freefall big time.

Gotta give Teague more time to develop. Look at Conley. He looks like a different player in his 3rd year. He was labeled by a a ton of Memphis fans as a bust as a rookie. Much improved player. I know he was a lottery pick and Teague was rated as the 7th best pg and all. Just sayin. Cant give up on a player this early.

MC-

If we as Hawks fans had a “what if” machine, isn’t this the scenario we were curious about?

No Joe Johnson. JC2 getting big minutes. Was the contract worth it? The new offense. I mean every question will now at least get a partial answer. That is wild.

Also, this is the first time I have ever seen JJ cutting up on the bench. That could mean several things. He focuses when he plays but is a different guy off the court. Or he’s relieved of the pressure for six weeks. Could mean something else too, I suppose.

Your insights please, sir.

Nothin’ but love for JJ. Get well soon.

And Josh Smith, this does NOT mean that you have the green light to take 20 shots a game. You need to be the facilitator more than ever . . . not the main scorer.
