Washington Wizards at Atlanta Hawks: New starters cure for slow starts?

L.D. is using the same starting lineup tonight. If the Hawks continue to open games with no energy then he said there could be changes.

“If we keep getting off to these slow starts, I may have to start thinking about doing something with the lineup,” he said. “I just can’t continue to allow us to constantly get off to slow starts. I may have to do something to shake it up. We’ll see what happens tonight.

“But I can’t sit here and just constantly allow us to keep getting off to those type starts because we are burying ourselves early and we are having to exert so much energy fighting back. That may be something we have to start thinking about.”

The Hawks had another big meeting Wednesday morning. To their credit, they are tired of all the talking, too.

“I’m a vet,” Mo said. “Talking doesn’t mean much to me. We’ll see how we respond tonight and over these next few games. We should have enough pride in what we’ve done the last two or three years where we shouldn’t need any meetings, in my opinion.”

One main focus of the meeting was all the blown assignments defensively. I’m told that some guys are getting upset when a teammate screws up and puts them in a bad position, but the Hawks have resolved to not stop playing hard when it happens.

“We all have to be on the same page defensively,” Al said. “We are going to have breakdowns but we have to stay with it and fight through some of that stuff.”

Injury report

Al Thornton is out for the Wizards, John Wall is back, so Flip Saunders is going with a three-guard lineup featuring Wall, Arenas, and Hinrich.

The Wizards have lost 10 straight to the Hawks, including the home opener. But if you recall that one wasn’t easy for Atlanta though Washington was without Arenas.

“We have to be a little different with him on pick-and-rolls and we really have to get to him in transition,” L.D. said. “The last time we played this team they really ran the ball on us, especially Wall. Now you have him pushing it and Gilbert spotting up. So we have to stop the ball and also know where Gilbert is on the perimeter.”

another defeat waiting to happen

I have no real problem with our 8-7 record.

However, I am unhappy on how we got there.

If we were 8-7 with Teague playing the PG spot and getting the minutes he needs to prove that he either has it or he doesn’t, I would be happy with the ride.

This way? Nope.

I said – and I don’t retract – that Josh and Al have been playing like pansies, but we cannot forget that without perimeter D, there is not inside D.

With Bibby starting and Marvin back to his useless self after the injury (after a reasonably encouraging start of the season) we are really dead on the water.

I would have liked to see Jordan Crawford or Mo Evans starting instead of Marvin today, to counter the Wizards’ 3 guard lineup. It’s not like Marvin is going to take advantage of his size advantage at the 3 tonight.

why did josh let blatche dunk that ball? he should hit him hard and sent him to the floor.

that’s the kind of hustle and meanness that we are lacking

This is a must win game. Starters need to play 40 minutes tonight if necessary.

Wizards have gone to the zone again… Crawford makes the contested J, but let’s see how they continue to handle it.

“why did josh let blatche dunk that ball? he should hit him hard and sent him to the floor.”

He already had 1 foul… maybe he thought picking up a 2nd one would send him to the bench due to the 2 foul rule.

Smoove and Horford out, Zaza and Powell in. My guess is the lead is gone within the next 3 minutes of game time.

Only one shot for Horford so far? Wow. Larry Drew really makes me sick with his jumpshot offense. People probably aren’t complaining right now, because the jump shots are falling, but if they weren’t Drew would probably be isolating Joe or Jamal by now. Learn to utilize your players, L.D.. It’s amazing, no matter how many fans, sports writers, analysts, etc. notice that Horford is underutilized, and yet L.D, is remains as blind or stubborn as ever.

Najeh,

It’s far more important to let Blatche know that he should be scared to drive into the paint than to preserve yourself.

Josh’s man to man D is again proving to be porous with Blatche scoring at will.

That foul could have changed that.

Co-sign Drew. Horford needs way more touches in this offense.

The bench hasn’t blown the lead yet, but I’m still disappointed with the fact that the energy level doesn’t go up when they come in the game. Those guys should come in and look to steal every cross court pass, get their hands on every loose ball, and claim every offensive board. Unlike the starters, they don’t have to preserve their energy or fouls to play big minutes. Players like Zaza and Josh Powell, who are not in the game for their talent, should be like wrecking balls on the floor.

That being a bit unfair. Powell actually has reasonable offensive moves.

He does lacks lift and size to play the PF slot and that shows a lot on rebounding.

LOL @ the infamous “players only” meeting. These guys have been together for 2 to 6 years. They still need to meet by themselves to discuss obvious issues?

That was the best half of basketball on both ends, in about 2 weeks. Keep it up the next half.
