Atlanta Hawks: Jamal Crawford’s ‘instant offense’ on slow drip

Jamal is finding it tougher to attack this season. (AP Photo)

Jamal is finding it tougher to attack this season. (AP Photo)

First, Jamal wanted me to pass along a message to my blog people: He reads all of your comments and he still loves you all. Killin’ em with kindness, I guess.

With that out of the way, it’s been clear that the instant offensive jolt Jamal regularly provided under Woody has gone missing at times as L.D. moves to a more structured approach. Jamal is an instinctive scorer, adept at having the ball in his hands and attacking off the dribble, and now he’s being asked to play off the ball and set the table more often.

The Hawks have found more offensive balance than they’ve had in the past with L.D.’s approach. But for Jamal it’s meant a move away from the comfort zone he enjoyed last season.

“I think it’s some adjusting for him,” L.D. said. “Because he is such a good one-on-one players, I am trying to put him in more situations where he is running a lot more pick-and-rolls. I sat him down and told him he is playing very unselfishly, and he is making plays and getting the ball to his teammates. And he is showing to be a willing passer.

“When he and Joe play like that, I think that makes us a better ball club. Now teams can’t key in on individual guys to play one-on-one and they’ve got their defense set.”

After a spike in Jamal’s shooting percentage last season, it’s slipped back down to his career mark (though he was quick to note that with such a small sample size, a few good shooting games would pull it back up). His true shooting percentage hasn’t dipped as much because he’s taking and making more free throws. Jamal is taking about four less shots per game so far (though his attempts per minutes played are actually up from 2.2 to 2.9), his assist percentage is up slightly and his turnovers rate is up significantly.

I’d argue that, based on observation, Jamal also has shown more willingness to defend; he said L.D. told him the same thing. It’s not reflected by the on-court/off-court numbers (or by his lackluster effort against Dallas Saturday, though he was hardly alone among the guards) and I’m not saying he’s suddenly locking anyone down. But I’ve seen him more often aggressively fight through screens, keep his energy up throughout possessions and make up ground to challenge shooters.

What I haven’t seen much is the 2009-10, instant offense version of Jamal, and that’s something the Hawks could use as their bench continues to sag against better competition.

“I have got to put him in more opportunities where he gets more shots because he is a shotmaker,” L.D. said. “I’ve already sat him down and told him that. But he’s adjusting well. As I told him, he’s a guy coming off the bench that I need the instant offense, but I also need good decision-making. He has shown that he is committed to that.”

Any chance after his strong performance late we’ll get to see Jordan Crawford some more? He’s a similar style of player to Jamal and will be here long term. We need to get him some burn.

Jamal is a great guy. There’s no doubt about that. Cool he reads the blog, too.

All that being said…he has to start playing better. He’s proving all the NBA “experts” right. All you heard this summer was that Jamal will have a really good year and then drop back. So far, that’s what he has done.

And, really, I was upset when Coach Drew put him back in the game on Saturday. He should have stuck with Jordan Crawford. Jordan was playing alot, not a little, A LOT better than Jamal.

Crawford will be Crawford. I’m more concerned about the guy ahead of him in the depth chart.

If JJ’s hand is injured, he needs to get shut down. Now. Nagging injuries like that rarely get better except through rest. If that means shutting JJ down for 2 weeks, fine. This is the time to do it, what with the weak schedule we face starting tomorrow and continuing through next Friday. If that means we lose 2-3 games we otherwise would win, fine. I don’t care how many games we win now. What I care about is having a healthy roster come April and May. The offense will go merrily along without JJ. Heck, maybe the absence of JJ will jolt Marvin and Jamal out of their offensive torpor and give Jordan Crawford some in-game experience he otherwise would have trouble getting. That could make us even stronger than we otherwise would have been.

Players rarely bench themselves due to nagging injuries (unless your name is T-Mac). Coaches have to do it for them. From the sources I’ve heard, MC, players don’t like to be perceived as unwilling to play through pain. Certainly, history is littered with players who have tried to “play through” a nagging injury only to aggravate it, to the long-term detriment of themselves and their team. So it’s on LD and the other Hawks staff to tell JJ that he’s getting shut down for as long as it takes for his hand to heal. Better for him to miss 5 games now than 10 games in March or April.

I agree with Niremetal’s comments about JJ needing to sit to heal. His shot is off. Maybe he can take a week or two, practice his shooting, and return to the team. I especially like the idea of other players being forced to step up.

The way JJ is playing so far this season I think the Hawks will only have two All-Stars – Josh and Al.

Jamal does seem to be having some trouble, but that will change. My main focus is where is his focus? On our team or on his contract? We desperately need his defense. In time the shots will improve as he learns his sets. It just seems like the motion offense stops when the 2nd unit comes in?

It’s not on the offensive side that this team is having problems. Its defense and rebounding.

Joe needs to heal. I agree, sit him, let him fully heal. Give Jordan and Mo some major minutes for a few games. See if he can heal. Maybe it’ll put more pressure on Marvin to produce. Guys need to step up. We need Joe 100%.

Good Job MC. Props to Jamal for speaking out.

I think that we’re 13 games in and every player is searching for their spot. LD’s system is new and what our guys really need to do the most is stop themselves from reverting to their old habits. i.e. Iso-ball, switching defenses, and every man for himself. The one thing about Craw’s game that you have to like is that he can play 1, 2 or 3… however, I like to think of him as a OG. The problem is that we give him the ball but at the same time, we put him in a position where he’s muzzled. LD has to find a way to make this offense truly uptempo. If he does that, then Crawford will thrive and so will Smith. However, if he keeps it as an opportunistic uptempo (which is really the walk it up stuff we see) then he can expect more of us trying to go one on one and Smoove putting up more wide open jumpers instead of side to side ball movement. Before we got Craw, he was one of the best at getting to the line. Why has he not be so great at that (per 48) lately? Maybe it’s because we have muzzled him and we don’t let him go to the basket with the ball anymore. If there’s any word for Crawford it’s this: Bring back the drive through the lane with the shake and bake. Don’t settle for the jump shot.

One of the ugliest things in basketball is to see Crawford trying to pass. He turn is over like crazy and seems very uncomfortable in that role. He’s a one-dimensional player (scorer), but not very productive. His career gives you a good idea. He’s got to go very soon. BYE BYE.

This new offense seems to be hurting his effectiveness. Jamal will adjust and play better he’s just going through a ruff stretch right now. We all know Jamal’s work the players that concern me are:

JJ- Definitely not living up to his mega pay day, Hurt, new offense, new coach- WHATEVA the man is currently stealing money and will do so for the next 4 years-talk about handicapping a franchise.

Marvin -” I am David Blain” I disappear for 5 games and then I surface for a 20 pointer. This man is not intrested in gettn better-08 was a fluke becuz he wanted a big payday. This guy’s a clown and we made a mistake paying him 7.5 milli per

Teague is really no better than AC law-He looks lost and the offense stalls when he comes in the game. Did I mention he cant shoot a lick -He hasnt hit 5 jumpers all season. I would have gladly given Marvin and the #20 pick to move up and get Jennings.

Props to Smoove and Al for giving it their all every night. If Josh continues to play this way he should definitely be starting in Feb. All Star game….. Now that he’s hitting his jumpers consistently I have no complaints about Josh, hes becoming what I thought he would be.

JJ 21 mill Smoove11 Al 12 Marvin7.5

Josh is our best player right now no way JJ should be making 10 a year more, what has he done this season besides the 1 30 point game.

Another way not signing another wing could hurt us, is JJ is our best SF on this team, so if he has to sit, that means more minutes for Marvin or Mo.

But I agree with nire. If he’s hurt, now is the time to rest it.

We see it in baseball all the time (players playing hurt). Over the last 2 years, we saw it first hand on the Braves. Heyward, Troy Glaus, Prado, and Schafer were all hurt at one time or another. But they insisted on going out there game after game. They struggled, and the team struggled.

If JJ is hurt, LD needs to make the decision to cut his minutes back, or sit him, allowing him to heal.

The offensive scheem suits Joe just fine, he is getting plenty of open and easy shot attempts, he’s missing them, but the scheme isn’t a problem for Joe. Jamal? Well, who didn’t see that as a likely mismatch before the season started? Oh yeah, Sund didn’t see that. Jamal is like a square peg being asked to fit into a round hole in his walk year (with a new CBA on the horizon). You’d have to stubbornly ignore the factors not to forecast problems.

1) This whole team is a mess. LD has a new offense which doesn’t match Jamal’s style. if Jamal is instant offense, why go away from what he is good at? Rather than having him in the game with the rest of the scrubs on the bench (yes – Mo and ZaZa either have career nights 1 out of every 20 games or are absolute trash) and incorporating this offense, let him do his thing. Same with Jo-Craw – let them get theirs.

2) This team does not rebound. How does LD keep saying he will have the team ready to play with energy and mention his focus on defense, if these two things NEVER happen. Smoove is one of only like 3 players on the team who can score, so he gets a free pass on the defensive boards since we all know he still cries every time he deals with a drop of adversity. LD is too scared to call him out consistently.

2a) This team has turned into J.Smoove’s playground. If he wants to shoot 3s on an iso-play, he can do that. If he wants to do a 720 fadeaway vs. Dwight Howard, he is allowed to do that. No accountability. Even if he has been putting up numbers, he still is immature

3) SOFT defense. I will say this for the 239832589th time: Boston, Orlando, the Clevelands, they NEVER play this soft. It’s like our perimeter defenders just let players like Jet Terry get by, assuming Smoove can block shots. But when Smoove contests, there’s ALWAYS someone open

4) This team has 3 captains. LOL!!!!!! Do they go on picnics together too? Boston has 1 captain.

5) Marvin is terrified of having the ball in his hands – no homo. He is also terrified of being on the spot. It takes people yelling at him to get him to actually try during the game. I can’t believe he had enough desire to negotiate for a contract – he seems more content wearing his spongebob pajamas and watching Hey Arnold! reruns than actually improving as a basketball player. As my man Rod from CP said, Marvin has NEVER stated his desire to be a great player, an All-Star, or to win an award. He is content with mediocrity

6) Joe got outscored by Deshawn Stevenson the other night. LOL! Leader my @$$

Jamal’s not going to admit it, but that “turf toe” that he had earlier in the season has to still be bothering him. If he had that, it takes a long time (and rest) to recover from it. Look how long it affected Matt Ryan. If it was his right big toe, that’s the one he pushes off when he goes up for a jumper, and I’m sure he feels it every time. That’s why I believe his shot is off.

I hope that he can bounce back tonight – we need him because he is the Celtics killer.

JeJe, I disagree with your assessment. The Hawks have the ability as currently constructed to compete at the highest levels in the NBA. The problem is they have not yet desired to. Admittedly I haven’t been able to watch many of the games this year, but when I have I have rarely seen them exert themselves. I have seen more energy on the part of the other teams.

I was hoping that Josh Powell and Etan Thomas would help toughen up the mentality in practice, but it hasn’t happened.

The Hawks, in my opinion, are only a ‘desire’ away from moving to the next level.

Anyways, I think Jamal has done a great job buying into the system and his shots will find their way as well as Joe. My problem and the problem with this team is defense an rebounding. Woody had his offensive shortcomings (pun intended) but when were winning it was about D and Boards. Now we look like a much better offensive team that can’t rebound or play defense. Effort and desire are the key.

Powell hasn’t looked great of late, but I thought he did reasonably well to start. Etan, however, hasn’t hit the court and Twin is dissappearing into his former role. USE THEM OR MOVE THEM! Why sign pieces we can’t use?

If Pape Sy’s back is so injured, how does he jump up and act like a cheerleader on our bench w/ every highlight? Seems pretty healthy to me…but I’m not a doctor? When will we hear/see anything out of him…as Stackhouse laces them up for Miami.

rev right now the hawks have done nothing to suggest they are capable of more than what they have done. you are beginning to sound like woody, if the plan isnt working try harder.

if the gist of what jeje is saying, to which i agree and have throughout the off season, is we would be overmatched severely when it came to depth then right now it is hard to argue otherwise. they are a good team, not a contender to go beyond the first round as is, which is a disagreement with jeje who thinks round two might be in the makings. nothing has changed significantly to suggest otherwise. organic growth vs peaked and now on downward spiral is the question to be answered this season.

Rebounding…

It appears to me when I have watched the games that most of the Hawks are so intent on getting back for transition defense that only one person is left to fight for an offensive rebound. Several times on Saturday there were four Mavs to get a defensive rebound while ALL the Hawks had already retreated for defense. Little wonder we are getting outrebounded on the offensive glass.

On defense I saw the Hawks standing around when the ball was shot by the Mavs. I did witness Josh and Al go after the ball, but I can’t remember anybody boxing out.

It seems to me if the Hawks are going to be content to score off their motion offense in a half-court set (and they are getting good looks at the basket) then they should send five guys to the glass, get the rebound, and walk the ball across half-court to start the offense.

There are times when a fast-break offense is best, and the Hawks’ athleticism is well-suited for a fast-break offense, but when you have an efficient and effective half-court offense, then get rebounds as a priority and set your offense. Fast-breaks, then, can be used as an great change of pace to keep the other team back on their heels.

doc, I feel the logic of your comments. “Insanity is doing the same things that didn’t work with more effort.” However, the lack of effort that I witnessed in the Dallas game was stunning. I simply cannot believe that the Hawks are that much slower than the Mavs.

I believe that the Hawks team that I watched spank Miami in the preseason is one of the top two or three teams in the East. But I haven’t seen them show up much this season.

Right now I am willing to say, “New coach, new system, old habits.” But if I see more lame effort tonight against Boston then I might be in need of a paradigm shift.

rev, we dont have another motor guy to play defense and bound besides josh smith. that is what i loved about chills, constant motion. the cat loved to rebound and play defense more than the offense is my guess. he was so fun to watch again the other night, gets down into a crouch and tugs his shorts or moan as he just missed stuffing one of josh’s stuffs and get a soft foul call on him. that is what we have in jamal and had in flip on the other end. it seems we need it on defense as well, the real hustler going for bounds and bowing up on defense. where do we really look to get that off the bench or even to start games. marvin just cant seem to find it in himself to do it.

This may not be the year we go all the way, and we may need a different final lineup to do it, but finally we are seeing a team TRY. Try to learn the offense, try to pass, try to have more grit and heart. I was excited last year because we were winning. I am excited this year because of the effort which will translate to winning those BIG games.

And let us not forget Jamal’s slump in the middle of last year, and then he comes back to win “Sixth Man of the Year.” Its hard to play at that level. Show some love.

doc, I’ll grant you the bench depth issue. Zaza was awful. He put forth effort against Dallas, but he was spastic and out of control. Jamal had an awful night. It was summed up by his missed reverse layup. Everybody else on the bench was invisble.

What I can’t figure out, however, is how the bench looked so good at the beginning of the season, but consistently so bad now.

I think the competition level for our bench has been upped. Against inferior teams we have superior players, but against good teams they have 3-4 players on their second unit we would gladly have on our 1st unit. With that said we often get outcompeted. It’s the 25-30 million dollar question that ASG has not allowed Sund or LD to answer.

Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy just one luxury item?

Rev,

One reason the bench looked good at the beginning of the season is because our first 6 games were against lottery teams. Memphis, Philly, Washington etc. But when they go up against the benches of Utah, Dallas, Phoenix etc, our bench has not lived up to par.

Etan has been hurt for a while, so I did not expect much from him. And although Powell is a “great locker room presence”, his basketball skill is lacking.

But I blame Rick Sund. 2 years ago, Brandon Bass was a restricted FA, and we didnt make an offer (we had the MLE available). Last year, Big Baby was available, and we did not make an offer (we had the MLE available). This offseason, Matt Barnes was a FA, and we didnt make an offer (Again, we had the MLE available).

There have been solid backups available. But we keep trying to find a diamond in the rough when it comes to our backups. And it hasn’t happened. But look for Rick to go cheap again next season, when the contracts of Jamal, Mo, Twin, Powell and Etan are up.

As for the notion, new coach, new scheme… this group has been together for 4-5 years and Drew has been here for 6 years. If you worked with the same 10-12 people for 4-6 years, the boss was fired and replaced with his right hand man, do you really think the culture of the office would significantly change? When adversity hits, would the employee group feel like this is new or would they feel like “here we go again”? A week or so ago, we heard some of the same statements from the players (and LD) that we’ve heard in the past. That’s my biggest concern, that there wasn’t enough of a change to the status quo to truly affect cultural change. These players have collectively learned how to react to adversity and seemingly in involves ignoring their head coach AND their teammates.

First, let me say that Jamal Crawford is always a player I respect and a person I respect. He does everything in a professional manner and you can tell that he has a passion for what he does.

But I have to say, I don’t expect him to be in a Hawks uniform by the end of the season. His chances of being extended before the season was already low. With the way he’s playing so far this season, it lowered even more.

He just isn’t the same player that we all saw last year. He was always the best player off the bench in every game and even sometimes the best player in the team in some games. This season, there are some games where he isn’t even the best player off the bench.

I hope that he gets back to his productive ways for the Hawks sake and for his sake.

I don’t see the ASG spending any more money unless the team does better…so you may have seen the short term peak. Not being negative, but we get an odd deal being in the same division with Orlando & Miami. We could have the 3rd or 4th best record and not have a 1st round home court situation b/c we don’t win the division.
Rule explained here.

Remember last year, we had to have a better record than the Celtics to get 3rd seed? There is no love for 3rd place team in a division, even if their record is better than other division winners.

Fundamentals,

Now that I think about it more, you are onto something.

While I have been pleased with the overall play of Josh and Al, I am not pleased with their leadership, or JJ’s leadership for that matter.

When things are going wrong, and others are messing up, Josh gets frustrated, and either hangs his head, pouts, or does his own thing.

Dude, you are a captain. Bring the team together during a timeout, and talk to them. Make sure they are on the same page, call out who needs to be called out. And stop leaving all the leadership up to LD.

Same thing with JJ and Al. They might be good leaders in the locker room, but who is the leader on the court?

How come we have 3 captains, but yet leadership is still an issue?

O'Brien

MannyT,

We could still be the fifth seed and have homecourt advantage against the 4th seed if we have a better W-L record (which is what I think will happen).

The top 3 seeds (imo) will be Orlando, Boston and Miami (in some order). The central division winner (Milwaukee or Bulls imo) will be the fourth seed.

But if the Hawks have a better record than the Bulls or Bucks, we will have homecourt against them.

I believe the new blog style was done for hockey fans whose lingo includes the goalie’s location disorientation favorite Standing on his head explained below from wikipedia (also on the Phoenix Coyotes site.) Isn’t that how I’m supposed to read this blog!

This is a term to describe an outstanding performance by an ice hockey goaltender in a short period of time. Often when a goalie lets out a rebound, the opposition returns the shot quickly, and the goalie has to make a quick save. A goalie often falls on his side and “stacks the pads” and appears to nearly stand on their head. The term may have been derived after NHL President Frank Calder, alluding to the 1918 rules change that permitted goalies to leave their feet to make a save, remarked, “As far as I am concerned, they can stand on their head(s)

Doesn’t really fit basketball, but ok for other sports with goalies…trivia transmission end ;-)

There are alot of blind fans in the ATL. This is not a very good basketball team folks. Like it or not but Mike Woodson is a better coach than Larry Drew. The only thing I didn’t like about Woodson is that he was too stern and he showed favortism toward certain players. I can assure you that if they(owner/gm) had gotten Woodson a true pg(facilitator) and a center they would have gone further in the playoffs.

The only reason LD install a motion offense is because they don’t a facilitator(pg) who has the ability to create scoring opportunities for the team. We need a pg who can get you10 to 12 assists a game. We do not have a Michael Jordan, Larry Bird or a Kobe Bryant who can create scoring opportunities for themselves and score when they need to.

This team is not built and coach well enough to compete against quality teams. I’m looking forward to the 2011 nba draft. I know it’s too early to evaluate players but I see 2 high IQ basketball players who could help the hawks next season.

1) Nolan Smith(pg) This young man is very intelligent. He’s a little raw but he is an excellant passer and defender. He has good size(6′3)
2) Jimmer Fredette(pg) This young man is a playmaker. He is a terrific passer and he knows how to get to the foul line. Outstanding free throw shooter.

Rev., the intangibles have yet to change (IMO). LD came in recognizing the need to work those intangibles. He talked about accountability in many of his early interviews. It’s much, much too early to declare a verdict, maybe even too early to notice a change… but this team needs to feel good about itself against quality competition before doubt sets in. Casual fans don’t take notice of the NBA until after the Super Bowl… let’s hope that the Hawks are on a helluva roll when they discover the ‘10-11 version of the Hawks. The diehard fans on the blog will suffer through these uncertain times.

Astro Joe, if you mean by the ‘intangibles’ – not playing with intensity, not hanging head when down, no mental toughness – then I agree. These are the hurdles that the Hawks must overcome. And these are supremely significant issues.

LOL! Leader my @$$.

I like Jamal and he seems like a good dude but I don’t think he finishes this year as a Hawk…….Teague needs to step it up tonight because Bibby cant guard Robinson. LD has to start giving guys the hook faster. If the Hawks have a lead and he inserts the bench, he cant let them stay in if they are stinking it up. He has done this a few times this year and they lost the lead and momentum…. The invisible man needs to rebound better if he isn’t going to score or do much else for that matter. They need to show they can beat a good team. They usually get fired up for the Celtics so hopefully we don’t have to worry about them coming out tonight with no energy.

Sometimes L.D.’s coaching decisions really confuse me. Jamal has been struggling and L.D. wants to get him “more shots”? I like Jamal as a player and he has a very unique skill-set on the offensive end, but this team is no longer a 1 or 2-man show. When one player is struggling, there’s always someone else to look to. Instead of rewarding Jamal with more shots when he doesn’t have it going, why not let someone else have a bigger offensive role? Obviously, the name that comes roaring to mind is Al Horford. He’s the most efficient offensive player in the league right now, and as good as he’s been playing, it seems kind of silly not to make him a bigger part of the offense. Just about everyone who watches the Hawks seems to agree that Horford should be given a larger opportunity on the offensive end. I don’t know why L.D. doesn’t seem to get that.

It seems that L.D. just has some “jumpshot” infatuation. He’d rather the guards handle the bulk of the offense and hope that their jumpshots start falling, rather than gets some better, high percentage shots from his bigs. It’s mind-boggling. Maybe, one day, L.D. will have an epiphany. You don’t win championships by doing nothing but taking jumpshots, and you certainly don’t win by under-utilizing your best players.

Man I got off early tonight just so I could make it home in time for the game. I agree with some of you bloggers that plays should be specifically designed for our above average one on one scorers. But not to the point to where our offense becomes predictable as it did in years past. Larry Drew, in my opinion, is pretty much an X and O kind of coach with brains enough to adapt and adjust as the game progresses.

So here is where I challenge our coaching staff…

The motion offense has put a major wrinkle in our offensive scheme but what can you guys come up with to cater to players like Jordan Crawford, Jamal Crawford, Jeff Teague, and Maurice Evans coming off the bench. Because I strongly believe that with Teague at the helm for the second unit he could speed up the attack and absolutely have a devastating effect on the players mentioned above with slip screens, pick and pops, or dribble drives. There is a lot more potential in our second unit that needs to be exploited.

On defense, I challenge our coaches to hold players ACCOUNTABLE! Commitment to defending should either be rewarded with more minutes as well as touches on offense. Not defending (and I’m not referring to getting beat on an assignment) should come with dire consequences. Like during practice, going through the fundamentals all over again. Maybe guys have been conducting themselves on the displaying mediocre defense for so long that, in their minds, they’re right. We should have intense practices for abnormal hours going over these fundamentals until guys “get it.” I mean the scoring has never been an issue. It is the lack of attention to detail on the other end of the court that is really hurting our win column. Think about it.

What do you bloggers think?

For those of you who still think players don’t want to play in this city, it ain’t ever been about the city or the fans. It’s always been about the organization. The Braves are a well-run organization, and players want to play here. The Falcons have become a well-run organization, and players want to play here. Here’s the thing Samuel…

Woodrow may have had these guys winning more games…

But, his style of play got torched in the playoffs. He had these guys overachieve?

What Scott Skiles did against the Hawks (taking us to 7 with far less talent) is called overachieiving…

Had the Hawks pressed the Magic a bit last season, then yes, you could argue we overachieved – because Orlando has more talent. But, we got washed. Washed beyond washed.

Woody’s style of play was a major reason the Hawks layed dud upon dud in the playoffs. The game slows down, and his ISO ball and that switching defense may have been alright in the regular season, but, in the playoffs, when you see a team game after game – and you do the same thing over and over with little to no adjustments – your technique is flawed.

No point in winning 50+ games and then get washed by a team whose ranked a seed higher than you are.

I kind of like the jumbo lineup featuring Collins at center and Al at the 4 better against the Celtics when Shaq and KG are in. Al does a much better job against KG than Josh does, and Collins has a lot of weight to throw around against shaq, which could help in the post.

The Hawks offense is starting to pick up, but the defense right now is looking weak. You can’t give up 60+ points in the first half against the Celtics and expect to be in the game. Let’s get it going Hawks. Also, since Drew is trying to shake things up, maybe he should give Jordan Crawford some bigger minutes in the second half, because he really gives a nice spark off of the bench and plays with great confidence, regardless of the score.

GT Alum

Hrm, hope these are just difficulties adjusting to a new system that the Hawks are going to shake off. Looks like they’ve regressed to some extent. They have consistently taken care of lesser competition so far, but they haven’t been able to get over the hump against any team that’s really good.

Drew

J from the A,

I couldn’t agree more on the fans. It’s absolutely disgraceful to see what goes on in Philips Arena with the fans. The cheers are louder when the opponent’s score than when the Hawks score. It’s no wonder the Hawks are better on the road so far this season, it’s not like they get much encouragement at home. I think the only reason the arena is close to full tonight is because “fans” came in to watch the Celtics, not to watch the Hawks. There’s not a worse fan base in the entire league. Even the Nets last year had more fan support than the Hawks.

Samuel

November 22nd, 2010

Doc,
From within or outside. It doesn’t matter. You guys just don’t understand that we just don’t have the talent to compete on an elite level consistently. Plenty of teams went “outside” and hired coaches but the results are pretty much the same. The teams that “upgraded” their talent are having better seasons. Check the standings.

It’s not about me being right or wrong, however, just like the bloggers here constantly littered the board with “Fire Woody” i’m definitely not gonna let yall forget where I stand. I think the Hawks did the man wrong and Karma is a Mutha.

Watch what happens if/when the Hawks bring in a real superstar.

Atlanta fans want title contenders and/or superstars. They filled up Turner Field in the ’90s when the Braves had a legit shot at a title, the Dome in the 2000s when they had Vick (and now that they again look like contenders), and they will fill up Philips if the Hawks ever get their act together and build a true title contender and/or acquire a true superstar.

In the last blog, you accused Teague of being “turnover prone”. His Assist to TO ratio is 2.58:1. That’s better than Brandon Jennings, John Wall, Devin Harris, and MANY others, and it’s the same as Steve Nash. It’s tied for 20th best in the league.

So my question is, do you think of Nash as “turnover prone”?

Najeh Davenpoop

“You guys just don’t understand that we just don’t have the talent to compete on an elite level consistently. ”

This is true, but you don’t seem to understand that there’s a vast middle ground between “not being able to compete at an elite level consistently” and “suffering the worst 4-game sweep in NBA playoff history”. Just because Woody didn’t have the talent on the roster to win a title doesn’t mean that underachieving in the playoffs is excusable.

“You don’t like either of those options. How about us as perennial lottery participants. Maybe you like that option better because we are moving more in that direction than winning any playoff series at this point.”

“Perennial” lottery participants implies that the Hawks would go into the lottery and continually misfire on their lottery picks — since if they struck gold on their lottery picks, they would no longer be a lottery team. How about HITTING their lottery picks, instead of picking non-factors like Marvin and Shelden? How about parlaying the assets they currently have to acquire the superstar (Melo? CP3?) that will lift them into title contender status? How about using the $3 million they acquired by selling the 2nd round pick and the $3 million trade exception they acquired for Childress to get some much needed depth and toughness on this team — or, for that matter, to hire a coach whose main pluses deal with his ability rather than his price tag?

You continue to be under the impression that Woody leading the Hawks into second-round-sweep land is the best the Hawks can do. It’s not. With even a modest amount of inspiration and creativity, the people running this franchise could have used the firing of a fatally flawed coach as a starting point in remaking this team into a true contender. Instead, they spent the entire summer patting themselves on the back for firing Woody and trying to sell the fans on the clearly mistaken idea that Woody was the only thing wrong with this team and that the core would be fine.

Like I’ve been saying all summer, Woody wasn’t the only thing wrong with this team, just the biggest one.

Cause Woody worked with “D-League talent” for 3 years and when they finally got him some real players, he turned a pathetic franchise around and took them as far as they had the talent to go. They then fired him and brought in a “slick talking” backstabber and the results are what they are.

Fans in Boston and New York and Philly continue to show up to games when their teams suck, only to boo them at every turn. Fans in Atlanta simply don’t show up when their teams suck. well for so long i admired the intelligence of LD, however:

“They have a blend of veteran players with the core of their team, and it’s a lot easier to fit in a vet like Shaq,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “If we brought him in here, it would be a little tougher. I don’t think his personality would have fit with our guys. It makes more sense to have veteran guys around him.”

is just plain stupid.

rivers:

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said there have been no issues with O’Neal accepting his role on a team with established players and strong personalities.

“We have good veterans,” he said. “We are going to do it our way, nobody else’s way, no matter who comes in the locker room. None of that individual stuff will be tolerated.”

guess we got bad vets.

In regards to the Woodson vs. L.D. debate, both coaches have flaws. A lot of people were in favor of firing Woodson, while I was somewhat indifferent to the idea, since the possible advantages and disadvantages were about even in my opinion. At any rate, L.D. definitely speaks better than Woodson and seems to have a full plan in mind, but based upon what both men have done on the court, it’s tough to say that L.D. is really an upgrade. So far, the team was superior under Woodson. Only time will tell whether L.D. can turn it around, but so far he’s made some critical flaws in his coaching decisions. I just hope things start to look up because tonight’s game is really unacceptable in terms of what the Hawks are capable of.

terrell,

I’m bewildered as well. I like what L.D. has attempted to instill in terms of the motion offense, but other than that, I’ve been pretty disappointed with a lot of what he’s done. I don’t like a lot of the in-game adjustments he’s made, I don’t like how he’s managed foul trouble, and his “accountablity” principle seems to be all talk at this point. I’m seeing a jumpshooting team that does not take advantage of mismatches. A lot of this is on the players, as well, but you can only blame them so much when the coach puts them in an opportunity to lose. L.D. hasn’t been utilizing the strengths of Al and Josh much at all, nor has he adjusted the lineups defensively during our struggles. He’s looking to the bench for things that just aren’t there, and I don’t see the motivation or intensity out of him. He seems very passive on the bench. Something has got to happen. I see a few players who are playing with a lot of intensity, regardless of what is going on, but usually it’s the guys who aren’t having any plays being run for them, and they can do little to correct the flaws of their teammates, when they are the only ones trying. I am truly starting to believe that hiring L.D. was a bad decision. His principles sound good on paper, but he still hasn’t realized that he needs to make adjustments to utilize the strengths of his team, rather than sticking to things that may never work with the personnel he has.

Horford just had a 20 point, 20 rebound night where he pretty much was the main reason the Hawks were in the game on saturday. Now, he has an off-night and suddenly all of that is forgotten and he needs to “pick it up”. That’s the definition of a fair weather fan right there. Also. just for the record, if Horford would have played his regular minutes, he might have had a double-double tonight anyway, but it wouldn’t have mattered with how the team, as a whole, was playing.

He just did something Woody never did by calling out his players. Word for coach – these Hawks like to party. I have some female friends that work in local ATL clubs and they all say the Hawks players are in there all the time. These scabs are more concerned about getting their Tiger Woods on than winning. I want to punch Bibby in the face seeing him on the bench laughing like Hawks were up by 30 points. Samuel,

The team quit last year, and Woody wasn’t getting the job done either. I agree with letting Woody go, but that doesnt mean ASG should have kept all the same players, and promoted Woody’s longtime assistant.

I was on the Shaq bandwagon this offseason, and I would have offered him the entire MLE. But the ASG didnt want to spend the money.

There was a SNT rumor that Shaq could be had for Marvin, but some didnt want to give Marvin up. I wonder how many of them would gladly give Marvin up right now?

Once again, LD brought up “what are players doing the night before a game”. It brings back the memories of the Bucks series. What are players doing when they are away from the court?

And leadership is still an issue with 3 captains? Come on LD.

I think he should start 5 bench players the next game. Thats what I would do to send a message to my starters.

But some fans

Uh… the Celtics fans were the ones cheering the Celtics. You know, the same Celtics fans who moved down here from Boston and show up to every Braves-Red Sox game and every Hawks-Celtics game? The ones who were talking sh-t before those 2008 playoff games and shut the f-ck up and went home after those games? Those Celtics fans.

Meanwhile SELLOUT crowds of Hawks fans, starved for a decent basketball team, yelled “Let’s Go Hawks” until their throats gave out during those ‘08 playoff games. I was there, like I have been for every Hawks home playoff game this millennium.

At that time, the Hawks were steadily improving and there was no telling how far they might go, so the fan base got behind them after years of waiting. Now we know exactly how far they can go, and their ceiling is nowhere near title contention.

Again, if being a “good” fan means forking over your money to the billionaire owners regardless of how poor their product is and how dishonest they are in assessing the quality of their product, then I hope Atlanta fans are as “bad” as possible. In a capitalist society, the most effective way to effect change is with your wallet.

Why in the world was Bibby guarding Nate Robinson? Seriously, L.D., what were you thinking when you made that decision. Also, it was pretty clear that Josh had a tough time defending KG. Al seemed to do a much better job on KG when he was on him for a few possessions, but L.D. never decided to try putting Collins on Shaq and Al on KG instead of what he was doing with Josh. Also, once again, Joe and Jamal were struggling, yet L.D. stuck with Jamal once again and let those guys take jumper, after jumper, after jumper. If it’s not working, try something else, for goodness sake.

Al seemed a bit off tonight, in terms of shooting, but that doesn’t mean L.D. couldn’t have at least tried some pick-and-pop or pick-and-roll with him to help get him into a rhythm, when nothing else was working. It’s a known fact that Shaq has trouble defending the pick and roll. Also, too much dominating the ball by the guards tonight. Most of the shots Al took were at the end of the clock when someone threw him the ball after the play had been broken and he had to try and make something happen at the end of the clock. Also, I don’t think even a single play was run for Josh, which resulted in his field goal attempts being mostly ill-advised jumpers.

I’m not sure if the players just didn’t run what L.D. was hoping for, or if it was really L.D.’s intent to spend almost the entire game taking long jumpshots and hoping they went in. The players need to be held accountable for sure, but so does the coach when things go this wrong.

Even in the perfect world, where the players execute the plays the coach draws up perfectly, that doesn’t mean that those plays are going to result in points, or that those are good plays, and based upon what the Hawks ran tonight, I can definitely say that those were not good plays. I just hope that L.D. was not actually calling the horrid plays that we saw tonight.

IF SHAQ IS DOMINATING HORFORD, WHY NOT START OR PUT COLLINS IN?

WE MIGHT AS WELL FORFEIT EVERY HOME GAME WE PLAY AGAINST A TEAM COMING OFF A LOSS ON THE 2ND OF THE B2B. PATHETIC.

From Sekou’s Twitter:

“”RT @christomasson: Shaq on why didn’t sign with Atlanta: “(Hawks GM) Rick Sund was bull (bleeping). Want me to spell it out for you?’’”"

But it’s the fans’ fault apparently. If only we were idiots like fans from the Northeast and continued supporting this dysfunctional joke of an organization with our hard-earned money.

I don’t get how LD is shocked and surprised by his team showing a lack of energy. True, we haven’t seen them roll over against the Celtics before, but we’ve seen this general pattern of behavior. For all of the bluster about playing detective, how did he not notice this stuff in th past few years? Are we to assume that Lester Connor didn;t ntoice what happened tonight? Maybe only the head coach has the vision to see his team come out and suck wind. Only the head coach and a few dozen diehard fans.

Give me a break.

TASKS FOR THIS TEAM TO IMPROVE AND SALVAGE THE SEASON:

1) REVOKE THIS “CAPTAIN” PRIVILEGE FROM SMOOVE AND JOE. LET HORFORD BE CAPTAIN BY HIMSELF SINCE HE IS THE ONLY GUY WHO WANTS TO WIN ON THIS TEAM BESIDES MAYBE JAMAL OR MO. HORFORD CAN THEN CALL OUT PLAYERS AND BE THE SOLE CAPTAIN

2) TRADE MARVIN AND BIBBY FOR THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, REGARDLESS OF POSITION

3) START COLLINS AND TEAGUE

They say that a team often takes on the personality of their coach. Well, the Hawks have definitely taken on the personality of L.D. I’ve watched him on the bench and he has little fire or emotion for the game. Also, what does he expect his team to do when he puts them in situations that create disadvantages? How does he expect players to react when there is no equal accountability? Certain guys can play horrid night in and night out and take as many shots as they want with no consequences, while those who actually help the team and show heart and effort on both ends of the floor have no guarantee of ever getting the minutes that they deserve. I think maybe a new voice, someone who was unfamiliar with the players would have been the best remedy for the Hawks this offseason, because that would maybe eliminate the favoritism and annoying ongoing trends that have been persisting for years.

BENCH MARVIN WILLIAMS.

I AM SORRY, GUYS.

I DON’T CARE IF I AM THE MOST HATED PERSON HERE — THIS GUY FLAT OUT SUCKS. HE HAS NO DESIRE TO BE GOOD. HE ONLY HAS A HALF-DECENT GAME IF HE GETS CALLED OUT. HE HAS NO HEART. HE IS A FRAIL STIFF WITH NO UPPER BODY STRENGTH.

I CAN NAME 6 PLAYERS ON OUR BENCH BETTER THAN MARVIN WILLIAMS. HE WOULD NOT START ON ANY OTHER TEAM. WE COULD’VE TRADED THIS GUY IN A PACKAGE FOR MONTA FREAKING ELLIS OR MO/SHAQ, BUT SUND, THE GENIUS HE IS, HESITATED ON BOTH.

START COLLINS HORFORD AND SMOOVE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE’S SOMEONE LIKE SHAQ IN THERE. COLLINS AT LEAST TRIES. MARVIN IS AN AWKWARD STIFF WITH NO DESIRE TO HELP THIS TEAM WIN. WE BET AGAINST OURSELVES GIVING HIM THAT EGREGIOUS CONTRACT

I’M DONE DEFENDING DREW TOO. HE MIGHT USE BENCH PLAYERS MORE THAN WOODY DID, BUT HE STILL HAS NOT TINKERED WITH THE STARTING LINEUP. DOMINIQUE SAID IT’S TOO EARLY TO CHANGE THE STARTING LINEUP – HOW SO? WE’VE LOST 5 FREAKING HOME GAMES. WHY THE HELL DIDN’T TEAGUE PLAY IN THE 4TH? HE WAS DOING GOOD THINGS IN THE 1ST HALF.

1) THIS TEAM IS TOLD NOT TO PLAY DEFENSE APPARENTLY
2) PLAYERS WHO PLAY WELL GET REWARDED BY BEING BENCHED

WTF IS THIS GARBAGE. U DONT HAVE TO WAVE A MAGIC WAND IN THE AIR TO SEE THE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TEAM. LARRY DREW WAKE UP AND START GETTING EMOTIONAL DURING GAMES. DON’T BE THAT STOIC BAFFOON

i think LD was eludeding to somehting a bit deeper than a lack of energy..

he was speaking more to mentality. as in we’re dealing with a group that is less driven by hardware more so the lifestyle..

hence, “could care less if the fans show up or not” im still gonna pick up this game check..

Astro . . the same people that say that the regular season doesn’t matter, are the same people that want to believe that the former coach was mainly at fault, and that his philosophies were greatly flawed.

And because we get blown out in the 2nd rd, everything else is supposed to be moot.

Right now, we’re a team that can’t even survive an injury to Marvin, or anybody else in the rotation. Even if someone like Teague went down, it’ll probably kill us

THE HAWKS WILL DO EXACTLY AS NORTHCYDE PREDICTED:

THERE WILL BE A PLAYERS-ONLY MEETING TOMORROW. THE TEAM WILL REBOUND AND DEFEAT THE ATROCIOUS NEW JERSEY NETS AND THE OTHER SCRUB TEAMS WE PLAY ON THE SCHEDULE. THEN OUR ARROGANT GM WILL PROCLAIM HOW WE ARE A TOP 4 TEAM IN THE EAST.

THEN WE WILL GET ASSAULTED IN DECEMBER. OUR SCHEDULE IS BRUTAL

I have to agree where was Teague I could have swore the guy was playing great for a hot min in that lst half. Sh** he and Jordan Crawford looked like the only one’s that tried tonight maybe even Powell and Collins too.

Marvin and JC1 plus Thomas are on the first ship out of here. If you guys are reading this GTFO of ATL seriously. You guys play with no heart only for money it seems I know college kids who’d be willing to take your spot right now, and probably play 100X better than you guys right now.

All right I’m going to stop my rant as you can tell I’m very upset with the way things are right now.

Oh yeah the starting spots are up for grabs except Josh and Horford probably Bibby as well.

JC2 should get a chance to start and Collins should just start regardless doesn’t even matter anymore.

According some of bloggers over at ESPN about this game it doesn’t look so well for some of the players.

Be ready for change coming soon VERY soon. I’m not talking about just trades, but line-up changes. LD needs to start making these players recognize who their dealing with.

bigdave, maybe I’m expecting too much from a guy who was “Uncle Larry” fpr 6 years, but more than knowing the mechanics of a motion offense or the way to defend your man without switching, LD is supposed to know the pulse of this group of players. At least the main guys who have been here for 4+ years. If he doesn’t have a grasp of the inner workings of this group, then what was the reason for hiring an insider vs. Dwayne Casey or someone else who could force a cultural change in a more meaningful way than “Uncle Larry”?

Ray,

If I was LD, I would start tomorrow’s game with all bench players:

teague, Jordan,Mo,Powell, and Etan.

I would let them play the first 5 minutes to send a message to the starters that their lack of energy, lack of focus etc., will not be tolerated.

We can only hope that this is a wakeup call for this team to get their act together. They don’t really understand that all 5 guys have to rebound and their a jumpshooting team that has to make shots.

What I saw in the Dallas game was a team that struggles to get key defensive rebounds and make good offensive decisions under pressure.

Boy oh Boy, are we in some deep mess??????

We need to start changing our mentality. This team has been toghether for 4 years now, and we haven’t don anything but make it to the playoffs. NOW is the time to make the change. Here is what we need to do. SUND, please read……

Trade Jamal, Smove, and Zaza to Huston for Brooks, Battier, and Cortney Lee.

Then you trade Bibby and Marvin to Dallas for Haywood and Beaubois

Now you look like something.

PG- Brooks/Teague
SG- JJ/Lee/JC2
SF- Battier/Evans
PF- Horford/Powell
C- Haywood/Collins/Thomas

SUND, JUST DO IT. All the salaries work out I already did your homework.
