Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks: What would a W mean?

The Hawks are looking for their first W against a so-called marquee opponent.

But what would it really mean if they beat the Mavs, Celtics, or both? Is it about the team gaining confidence? Sending a message? Getting some media love?

Is it about proving they can do it, even though it’s only November?

“We swept Boston and they still went to Eastern Conference finals,” Mo noted. “You have got to be peaking at the right time and continue to get better.”

L.D. seemed to be simultaneously downplaying Atlanta’s failure to beat the best teams on its schedule and emphasizing that fact to his players.

“I don’t know how much the guys have thought about who the wins are against,” he said. “It’s early in the season. We have to respect every opponent. You don’t look at their wins and losses. ”

But before practice broke yesterday he told the team they needed to “beat some of these [better] teams.”

“I did put that bug in their ear,” he said.

The way things are going for the Mavs, maybe they need to win this one to prove something.

The Bulls beat them in Dallas last night by pounding them on the boards and shutting down everyone outside of Dirk. The Mavs have do have a victory against Boston and split with Denver and New Orleans.

Amazingly, this is the first set of back-to-back games for the Mavs.

“It’s one of the realities of the league,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “The good thing is we didn’t have anyone play ridiculous minutes last night.”

A Dallas reporter asked Carlisle about his team’s struggles against “young and athletic” opponents.

“It’s important for us to play our game,” he said. “We have to play to our length and experience.”

The Hawks want to make Dallas defend the entire floor but L.D. said it’s not like the Mavs can’t run. He said they play at a “youth’s pace” despite a starting lineup that averages 10 years of experience.

“They are a team that we know they are going to be well-prepared and even playing a back-to-back are going to give us their best game,” Drew said. “We can’t allow them beat us on glass, we can’t allow beat us up and down the floor. We’ve go to do a good job containing the dribble on the perimeter. We can’t get seduced into playing a style that doesn’t fit us.”

Notable quotes

L.D. on the team’s effective jump shooting so far: “I won’t count on it every night. There will be some shots where we can’t put it in the ocean. We can’t go out and rely on the perimeter shot. We have to be a good executing team. But more importantly we have to be a sound defensive team. We’ve got to be able to get stops when we need them. We’ve got to be able to be solid defensively every night we step out.”

Al on the team developing a defensive identity: “It is coming along real well. We have to keep trusting each other. We are not there yet but I am encouraged to see some improvement. We are up and down but I think we are more consistent than we were in the past.”

Carlisle on that game J. Kidd stole from the Hawks last season: “I try not to live in the past. That was a great win, but in the NBA that was light years ago. Both teams are different now.”

Smoove on playing Thanksgiving night: “It’s good, but the only negative about it is you can’t eat what you want to eat before the game. That’s what Thanksgiving is about is to get some of that good stuff. Some of that cranberry sauce, some gravy with some mashed potatoes. I think we will definitely eat good when we get home. It’s always a plus to be able to do things like this. I just hope we don’t get the Christmas games. I don’t want those at all.”

Maybe it means more to observers than it means to the team, but I think it should mean something. At the very least, if the Hawks want to convince the fans that they have improved from last year, they are going to have to win some of these games against good teams at home.

As inadequate as Woody was, the Hawks under Woody consistently overachieved against good teams at home.

very true Najeh – fans don’t want to see regression in the area of defending your home court. This game means a lot to the psyche of the team and the fan base – even though its early, wins against quality teams bolster confidence that wins can be achieved come playoff time. A home win tonight would be huge because already lost 3 at home win last year they only lost 7 all season.

Hawks already have 3 losses at home this season. How many did they lose the entire season last year? 8?

Winning tonight is a step towards establishing home court again. You want your arena to be a tough place to play, and the Hawks have not defended it well.

Plus it would show that they are capable of beating a good team. And lets not forget that this is the Mavs third game in 4 days, and they played last night.

Hawks need to win this game.

“hawks have been jump shooters all season though”

It’s one thing to shoot open jump shots in rhythm that result from ball movement. It’s another thing to shoot contested jump shots out of rhythm without moving the ball, which is what the Hawks started doing when the Mavs went zone — especially after Josh (the main catalyst for ball movement on this team) exited the game.

Al has 10 boards already and is leading the Hawks with 4 assists, yet his teammates can’t return the favor. How does Al only have 3 field goal attempts, especially when he’s 2/3 from the field? Josh is playing great, and Al is giving the team more and more opportunities with his rebounding and defense, but we are not getting much elsewhere. The Hawks desperately need to get Al more looks on offense, and Jamal needs to be benched when he is playing like this. Go with a defensive perimeter lineup and leave the offense to Al and Josh. I wonder if L.D. just isn’t calling plays for Al or if the perimeter players just aren’t executing the plays with selfish intentions.

Larry Drew cannot afford to have his full bench in at the same time in this game. That would be a disaster. Hawks bench without some starters just are not good enough. Starters have to log big minutes, though Marvin has been stumbling and bumbling all game, Joe and Jamal can’t buy a shot or are hesitating to shoot. Hawks playing tentative. This game is not out of reach, Hawks playing badly while Dallas is shooting well, let’s see if that trend continues in the 2nd half.

Apart from one turnover or two, Josh is playing out of his mind, him and Bibby keeping Hawks in this game.

Would the Hawks really lose that much in terms of bench scoring if they dealt Jamal to plug their holes at PG, SF, and C? I really don’t think so. This is why I have been advocating a Jamal trade since the day Jordan was drafted. Well, I think most will agree with me when I say that Jamal Crawford, and perhaps more importantly, L.D. are mostly responsible for this loss. Jamal clearly didn’t have it going tonight, yet L.D. just wouldn’t bench him and give someone else a shot. Also, Al was a beast, hitting just about every shot he put up, yet L.D. failed to run things for him. L.D. clearly has a lot to learn. On a positive note, you have to take your hat off to Al Horford. He was, by far, the best player in this game and probably would have led the team to victory if he would have touched the ball more on the offensive end.

One other thing. Jordan Crawford provided a great spark tonight, and I think he proved that he deserves some playing time in the future. Absolutely critical flaw by L.D. to stick with Jamal over Jordan when Jordan had it going, but at any rate, great effort by Jordan Crawford.

How come Hawks play so well against weak teams this year and suck against playoff teams? It was the opposite last year! Joe got the big money. He has to step up. Jamal might not have gotten the contract he wanted this year, but he is still making 10 mil a year. He has to play like it. I didn’t expect Drew to leave Jamal so long in this game especially after he made that crucial turnover.

Horrible games by our supposed scorers JJ and Jamal.

Not the best coached game by Drew, although inserting Jordan into the game made him look like he knows what he’s doing. Jamal playing 30 minutes, with the way he was playing on both ends of the court, is unacceptable.

Great games by Horford and Smith. You earned your money tonight.

Well guys Larry Drew’s offense does not highlight the strengths of Jamal and Joe and you can’t do anything with Joe but you have to move Jamal now. Marvin and Zaza are garbage in any offense or system so they also need to go at the 1st oppurtunity. Jordan can feel in for what you are currently getting from Jamal so I am tired of hearing that. On the other hand, you need guys like Joe and Jamal who are really good 1 on 1 guys on your team you just don’t need too many guys like that. Lastly, Larry Drew is not a good coach. His system does not bring out his best players assets and his substitution patterns are amateur at best.

A more realistic trade idea would be Jamal, Marvin, Zaza, and Mo for Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace, Chris Wilcox, and Tracy McGrady. At least as far as talent that’s a more or less even trade — the only sticking point would be whether or not Detroit would be willing to take on the rest of Marvin and Zaza’s deals.

lol Najeh. I know right, nobody on here should opposed to that deal.. ignition the problem is we have Rick Sund as GM. I don’t know if he is willing to make that type of move… Marvin just does not have it. Its time to stop waiting for him to show up. New offense same ol invisible Marvin…. And as much as I criticized Woodrow over the years, LD has made a lot of bad decisions when it comes to pt and use of the bench. He has left them in for to long in games and they have given up the lead..H. And tonight he benched Bibby and Jordan although they were hitting shots to leave Jamal in who was killing the team offensively and defensively. When he put Bibby back in, it should have been Jamal coming out not Jordan… LD blew it with sticking with Jamal. Its time for Sund to start making some calls.. Big games by Josh and Horford though.. Najeh Davenpoop

Horford was beasting on the boards and Josh did a great job D’ing up Dirk — if anyone else on this team knew how to rotate, he wouldn’t have to leave Dirk so often. I have no idea what game JeJe was watching. Those two are the only reason this game was even as close as it was.

Josh Smith and Horford are looking like true superstars on this team. Joe is looking like Average Joe at the moment, but maybe it’s cause of the injury I’m hoping cause if it isn’t then I’ll be really upset we dumped $126 off on a guy we could have let walk to NYC for another player like a C just saying.

The problem is, if the Hawks had let Joe walk, they wouldn’t have had cap space to acquire another impact player.

And this is directly a result of giving Marvin, Zaza, and Bibby contract extensions in the summer of 2009.

The Hawks are trying to get something out of Teague that isn’t there while Jordan already has it in him.. And can we please get a better back up center. YoDaddy

November 20th, 2010
11:03 pm

ON a positive note though, you can see how the Hawks are trying to break their old habits they just have not gotten there yet. They still get down on themselves thru adversity but they don’t pack it in like they used to. They must learn to ride the waves.

A perfect example of riding the wave was when the Hawks came within striking distance and Dirk was off it seemed like the Mavericks picked it up as a team after squandering an 18 pt lead (seems many teams do that huh?).

Consistency is the key and the drop off from the bench players is unacceptable.

As bad as Jamal Crawford, Marvin Williams and Joe Johnson played..the Hawks still had a chance to win the game. Jordan Crawford showed that all he needs is a chance and he will be good player n this league. Horford the so called undersized center dominated this game and Josh Smith proves yet again that he is untradeable and an All Star caliber player. The Hawks kept turnovers to a minimum and played some pretty good defense. That’s looking at the positives of the game.

Ray

Well I need to calm down a bit I guess the whole summer of sameness is starting to have it’s negative affects I was already on the fence about watching the hawks. Then the 6 game win streak happened, and it was like maybe things had changed, but now it seems like it’s the same and growing worse and better at the same time.

Honestly I don’t know how that happens but things that are getting better Horford and Josh Smith.

Things growing worse would be MW, Jamal, JJ, and Etan plus other players.

Mike Bibby is really the surprise story of the season so far for me. He’s playing way better, and he’s actually earning his contract in my eyes. True he’s not going to shut down the other team’s PG. But he was never known to do that in his career. It was Bobby Jackson in Sac, who would come and apply pressure. But Bibby is leading the starters in a lot of ways. I think if Jamal is traded, Bibby will have even greater finishes in games. Bibby is still arguably our most clutch player on the team.

He has shown nice defensive abilities in spurts but that’s about it. I understood not doing the Thompson deal because of no backup pg but man the way ZaZa is looking out there Thompson would have been a good back up. I would have just let JC2 handle the backup pg role……………………………I was also against the deal for Bynum and Prince but I would take that too.. Our bench is terrible and guys we are counting on are not getting it done……Its almost shocking we have won the number of games we have with Jamal stinking it up,,, Marvin being Marvin, ZaZa looking terrible, Teague not doing much, Mo hurt , and Joe not having his shot… We really need guys to start showing something or make some moves.

For all of you guys in love with Jarret Jack he is now a Hornet. Atleast someone is trying to get better and address there needs even though they have one of the best records in the league and a smaller market than Atlanta and that would be New Orleans.
