J.J.'s last play was only the beginning of Atlanta's problems. (AP Photo)
– The Hawks lost seven home games last season. They’ve lost four times at Philips Arena in the first four weeks this season. Can’t knock their 5-1 road record but also can’t ignore their inability to beat good teams at home.
– Losing by close margins isn’t much of a mitigating factor, either, since the best teams tend to win those kind of games more often than they lose them. The Hawks were healthy and rested this time, too, while Dallas came in after taking a tough L against Chicago last night.
– That didn’t keep the Mavs from looking sharper in the first half. L.D. said the Hawks haven’t played with the same energy at Philips Arena. It’s also true they haven’t played the same level of competition. “We have put ourselves in positions that we shouldn’t put ourselves in,” L.D. said. “A lot of that is a failure to follow details.”
– “I thought we had a good plan coming in,” Al said. “It’s a tough loss. We still have work to do as a team.”
– Down three with 13.2 seconds left, the Hawks ended up getting an awkward 3-point try from J.J., who looked to be trying to draw a foul on Tyson Chandler. Clearly that’s not what the Hawks were looking for.
– “Get a handoff, turn the corner and get fouled,” Drew said. “We drew up a play to go to the basket and get fouled. We wanted to put the onus on the official. If we make the free throws when we foul them and there’s plenty of time left. We did not get a clean exchange between [Joe] and Al on the handoff.”
– J.J. played with a glove on his left hand. He got it banged during the preseason and he favors it at times. I’ve never seen him miss so many open shots as the last month–the Mavs appeared to be letting him shoot long jumpers at times–but you never get far asking him if injuries are affecting his play.
– “I’m good, man,” he said yesterday. “Just nursing these little ‘nick knacks’ I’ve got. Other than that, everything else is cool. I will be all right.”
– The Hawks reacted as if they had never seen a zone defense before. They passed it aimlessly around the perimeter until someone decided to jack up a 3-pointer. The Hawks missed 18 of 25.
– L.D. said the Hawks expected to see zone and the plan was to reverse the ball and attack the creases. “We settled,” L.D. said. “That’s way, way too many 3-point shots for us. They zoned us and we lost discipline. We settled for perimeter shots. Our movement was slow. We looked unsure. We started holding the ball. We fell prey to exactly what they wanted us to do.”
– Al had 20 rebounds. His teammates had 17. The Hawks had a 20-18 edge on the boards in the second half but Dallas led 26-17 in the first with eight offensive rebounds. There were a few possessions where the Hawks watched the ball fall to the floor before Dallas collected it. “We did a poor job of boxing out,” Drew said.
– Atlanta’s bench was awful in the first half. The reserves played a combined 37 minutes and combined for two points and two rebounds. The goal is for those guys to provide energy but instead they let the game get away in the second quarter.
– The Mavs are the latest Hawks opponent to show the difference in depth between the teams Atlanta has beaten and the teams they can’t beat. It’s too difficult for the Hawks to beat good teams when the bench drags them down.
– This was the fourth straight game Zaza was just kind of out there. It’s perplexing because he had been productive and energetic.
– Jamal still isn’t shooting well and his turnovers are up. He had seven assists so it’s not like he’s stagnant but the instant offense has been up-and-down. He had a key steal, craftily poking the ball away from Chandler on a trap with Smoove and dunking at the other end.
– Another strong line from Josh: 21 points, six assists, five steals, 10 of 19 shooting. Just five boards, and it looked like he grew frustrated because he and Al were the only guys working to get them.
– The Hawks couldn’t take advantage of an off night for Nowitzki, who was 8 of 22. He was just 2 of 9 in the fourth period and missed at least four wide open looks that he almost always makes in clutch situations.
– With Bibby in foul trouble and L.D. apparently having seen enough of Teague in the first half, in came Jordan Crawford to play with a small lineup. He gave the Hawks spark by making his first four shots, including a fadeaway over Nowitzki.
– “It felt good to get out there and play,” Jordan Crawford said. “I’m just excited that I got the opportunity and I just tried to take advantage of it.”
– “Jordan gave us some really good minutes,” L.D. said.
– “Atlanta has so much firepower, and they they insert a kid who probably hasn’t played in three or four games and he lights it up,” Jason Terry said.
– Later, Jordan showed his inexperience. He messed up a coverage that led to a Barea 3, lost Terry on a pick-and-roll layup and threw the ball away when trying to whip a pass to Mo under the basket. Back came Bibby, who continues to be the only guard making 3-pointers consistently.
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

The discouraging part about the play of Marvin and Jamal is they’re not even playing good enough to get traded.

Really, MC, do you see any improvement other than Smoove by anyone this year? Anyone?

This is how they react every time they see a zone defense. I was hoping the new offense would change things in this area, but so far it has not.

i seriously do not understand why jj got so much money….he has done nothing for us this year. Same goes for marvin (well duh) and jamal. Where can we spend that $30 million on. We need to trade them now b4 they are worth even less. And give jordan more minutes LD.

Great game Al, good game Josh, and okay game bibby and Jordan. Everyone else, including LD was horrible.
LD said players did not pay attention to details. I hope he let them Have it after the game. And I would like to see him send a message to Jamal by benching him in favor of Jordan.
Don’t know why LD played Jamal 33 minutes despite the fact he sucked tonight.
No need to panic as yet. However, history suggests these players don’t have the mental fortitude necessary to make the next step.
LD said he saw guys hanging their heads early on just because Dallas made a run, and how he has seen it before. He sounds frustrated with this team.
They say the easiest way to improve the moral in the work place is to fire the employees who are unhappy.
The best way to improve the mental makeup of this team is to make a trade.

Horford has clearly improved as well. He is much more confident and versatile offensively now than he was a year before, both as a jump shooter as well as in the post.
Everyone else on the team, though — in particular Marvin and Teague, who were both being counted on to improve — is exactly the same.

I have seen enough!
Jamal Crawford! Is done playing for the Hawks!
Trade his azz … and Marvin too! Throw Zsa Zsa in there too!
It is clear, that Sund promised Jamal something and lied to him. Apparently, he waived his option and it was not honored by management, so, there is some bad blood going on here. Jamal was promised a new contract and it was not honored by management, so now, he is disgruntled and is hurting the team purposefully.
Joe is proving that if he is not featured, you will get ball sharing, but no wins without the ball in his hands. There are some serious issues going on internally with this team. Joe got his money, so he don’t give a fck – now, and that is real!
I say, bench jamal for the next ten games, and give all his minutes to Jordan! What have we got to lose! There are some serious chemistry issues going on here! They say the NBA is a business, and with the new CBA Contract looming, so be it! These cats are playing for Money and not the Love of the Game!

Another option is to go back to the lineup from when Marin was injured. Start twin At center, al at PF, and Josh at SF.
I don’t agree much with alleged superiorblogman. The hornets are 10-1, and playing in a small market.

Call up Joe Dumars and beg and plead for him to do Jamal and Marvin for Prince, Ben Wallace, Chris Wilcox (to make salaries match), and a pick of some sort. Maybe Jamal and Marvin are (slightly) more talented than Prince and Big Ben, but the Hawks so desperately need some toughness and defense that this trade would be more than worth it.

Its time to get over this core b.s. cause aint nothing good about it..Sund talked about improving this sorry bench and did nothing to add quality players to it….LD talks a good game but I’m sorry I’m not seeing it so far. He said he was going to hold guys accountable but I’m not seeing it… Marvin does absolutely nothing and still starts…… Jamal Crawford disrupts the offense. plays no d, turns the ball ova , takes any shot he wants yet he is still getting major minutes. Where is the accountability LD? Teague has shown me absolutely nothing out there…. ZaZa is terrible. If this was the NFL he would lead the league in dropped passes and fumbles. Dude gets set up nicely all the time and he either gets blocked, fumbles the ball away, or does that dumb pump fake that nobody goes for and travels. Jamal, Marvin, and ZaZa should all be on the trading block. I wouldn’t even be mad if Teague was on it. Its time to get some guys in here who are going to get the job done. New year same ol same ol with these guys smh
Props to Josh and Al. They seem to be the only ones who care to show up and attempt to play hard. Bibby has also been better than last year… Joe is struggling but I think he will eventually find his shot. He is the one guy I’m not worried about.

Report Card on the worst offenders:
JJ played incoherent as if he had a hangover from too much partying at Magic City last night. His lack of preparation was obvious. Not only was he struggling offensively but his blown assignments on defense were also costly.
Jamal was perhaps the biggest goat of the game. He stunk it up so badly offensively and defensibly that it was unconscious. The timing of his miscues was the most damaging that he perhaps single-handedly put the dagger in the loss. Maybe he attended the same party JJ attended and got caught-up in drinking too much booze or worst.
Marvin was typical Marvin. His problem of inconsistency is still consistent and clearly mental. Though he disappointing us again, he didn’t nearly do the damage that Jamal did; In fact, when it appeared that he might be finding his stroke with that last shot he made to brought the Hawks within 6 pts to tie, soon after, LD benched him but played Jamal though his miscues for 33 min.
Speaking of LD, other than Jamal, he perhaps was the biggest contributor of the loss because of his rotation pattern. For him to continue to play Jamal through his struggles was senseless. If I didn’t know any better, I would have sworn that Woody was coaching that game based on the substitution pattern; Jamal first off the bench (no matter what) and will finish the game (no matter what), Zaza first big off the bench (no matter what) and will play substantial minutes (no matter what), Jordon Crawford (the rookie) lights it up on offense but is benched with a few miscues while the coach overlooks the miscues of his veterans (no matter what). Doesn’t this sound familiar? To be fair however, I saw rational for playing Jamal in the first half during Dallas zone defense because he was the only PG that had the ability to break-down the zone defense. Jeff Teague was supposed to be quick expected to do this but (again) he deferred.
I have already prognosticated about Jeff Teague abilities or lack thereof. Since he is making me look like Nostradamus right now, I won’t belabor the point.
Zaza has been sucking as of late, but in this game he sucked so badly that I and perhaps others were screaming for him to come out of the game. In a critical possession when the Hawks were trying to make that last run, Zaza couldn’t finish under the rim and created a TO. Mo Evans out of frustration dropped his head and slammed the ball pretending to dribble. He was just plan awful. He makes bone-headed fouls trying to demonstrate his effort but he is really masking his limitations. Lately he is more of a gimmick than an NBA basketball player.

Wow, just finished watching the dvr of the game. The loss has to go to LD. Coming out of your final timeout down by 3 and your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd option is Joe Johnson stumbling and dribbling across the court for a contested 3 is terrible. Joe being the 1st option is expected at that time but geez draw up a plan b. Jamal Crawford was useless tonight and could have helped more watching from the bench. I like that LD does give other guys minutes(keeps them engaged in the game)and that was some great production for the rookie. Will someone please tell Teague that he has the talent to be in the league and to put some aggression with his quickness and get to the cup.

Until we get 20/25 minutes of steady PG production behind Bibby (by a real PG – not by Jamal), we are going nowhere.
It’s that simple.
Right now we have JJ struggling mightily and Jamal playing horribly
It’s impossible to beat “serious” teams that way with the current rotation.
For me, Jordan C has proven to be deserving of ALL of Jamal’s minutes behind JJ.
Teague needs to step up or be moved.
Nonetheless the bottom line is simple:
We lost 5 games so far.
On all 5 losses but 1, we were “in the game” with 1 minute to play.
On all 5 losses we had players injured or severely limited.
Given JJ’s struggles, my guess is that we have been shorthanded since day 1, contrary to last year.
No need to panic, but what I mentioned above remains, IMO valid:
- Jamal out as soon as possible;
- Teague needs to step up;

TToo me I’m not getting all emotional after this game but here’s my take on why we loss. #1 Coaching I like Drew but his rotation too night was off. Starting with sitting Al and Josh for extended mins when they both were playing well and not in foul trouble. Then when the 2nd unit was in and Dallas took the lead we should of went back to our 1st unit. But instead it took him forever to put back in. #2Jamal killed us I mean too me this was his worst gm of the season he kept shooting jump shots but kept missing I understand what he brings to the team but when he’s playing like that you gotta go with giving Jordan more tick especially if his shot is on! Mo, Marvin, Zaza, sucked tonite where was Josh Powell MC was he hurt? Not the end of the world Hawks fans let’s just regroup and get ready for the Celts on Mon! Got. A feeling that team for some reason plays betta with a packed house Hawks marketing needs to lower ticket prices and start getting more fans in here rooting for the home team!

4-14 with 1-6 for 3 pointers for a total of 11 points. JJ what’s up? People making half your salary are not shooting that badly. JC1 was 2-10 and 0-4 on 3 pointers. Hey, if you want people to think you are worth the money you want and that extended contract this is not the way to do it.
I am trying not to pile on what everyone else is saying but it is all true. The rotation was awful, Teague seemed intimidated, Marvin should have been put on the bench and too often I watched the ball being passed around on the perimeter with no one making cuts around or to the basket. LD should come into today’s shoot around with fire in his belly with the performance. Can one of the coaches please work with Zaza on catching passes in transition. He fumbles too many of them and tonight in critical situations.
I don’t know what play LD drew up for the last play but why didn’t JJ get the screen that he needed and if Chandler did get him on the switch, why didn’t someone come back to pick him off. It is not rocket science. These guys have been playing at least since middle school. That should be something they recognize in their sleep. Instead, they left JJ out there on Tyson and he did a real good job of denying JJ an open look and then making him take a bad shot. Still if someone had come back out and picked Chandler off even if his man switched it would not have been someone as big as him and him and JJ could probably have shot over him. When you have the biggest contract in the league people expect you to do better than 4-11 and 1-6 on 3 pointers. They also expect you to stick that shot at the end.

Okay Josh and Horford have earned their money plus some, and I for one will now be quiet when Josh is taking those jumpers. Cause it has become easy to see he’s improved his game by what seems to be large leaps and bounds.
Jamal, Etan Thoams, Marvin Williams, and Zaza have earned themselves a spot on the trading block.
As for Teague haven’t seen enough yet to Judge ya’ll too quick to move the man, but give it some time I think he’ll be ok.

I SEE IT LIKE THIS. LD HAS BEEN GIVING A BAD HAND, IN TERMS OF CIRCUMSTANCE. HE HAS TWO BONA FIDE STUDS IN THE FRONT COURT. PROBLEM IS THE HIGHLY OvER PAID ROBIN WHO WANTS TO BE BATMAN, AND WHOSE PAID LIKE BATMAN WONT SHARE THE BALL. AND JJ HAS NOT SHOWN UP BUT FOR ONE GAME ALL SEASON A LOST VS PHOENIX. LET ME GO ON RECORD AS SAYING WHEN THE HAWKS DRAFTED JORDAN, I SAID THEY NEED TO TRADE JJ. FOR JORDAN IS A REAL STUD AT THE 2, PLuS JJ IS NOT GOING TO BE WORTH WHATEVER WE GIVE HIM. THIS 3 CAPTAIN THING IS BLOWING UP IN YALL FACE, BUT NOT THE WAY YOU EXPECTED. THERE SHOULD ONLY BE ONE CAPTAIN ON THIS TEAM. AND HIS NAME IS JOSH.HE THE HEART AND AL THE MuSCLE -IF JOSH WAS CAPTAIN HE’LL BE BARKING AT HIS TEAMMATES .JJ DON’T CARE HE GOT HIS MONEY. JAMAL IS KILLING THIS TEAM ON PURPOSE MANAGEMENT HAS TO MAKE A MOVE. BUT L D CAN BUY HIMSELF SOME TIME BY SIMPLY SWITCHING HIS ROTATION. MOVE JJ TO THE 3, START JORDAN AT THE TWO. Some need to stop trying to rationalize and accept the fact that the Hawks are not a good team. How any other conclusion can be drawn, I have no idea.
This group of players have just been together too long. We see the same lazy effort every time they take the floor. Thank God that the Hawks have Al and Josh on their team. The only two players that bother to try.
I’m calling off my Joe Johnson truce. That guy is just another a$$hole who gets a big contract and then coasts. F him. Nothing like watching a $24-million dollar “superstar” shoot 20% when the team needs him most. Those f’ing idiots at ASG should each be kicked in the nuts for giving that clown his contract.
Jamal Crawford = terrible. All that needs to be said, really.
And, Larry Drew….how over one’s head can one guy be? You were going to “put the onus on the officials”? Really? I mean, f’ing reall?!! The Mavs were getting every call (and I mean EVERY call) and we’re going to put the “onus on the officials” late in the game? Umm…don’t do that, idiot.
Also, you can say what you want about the mistakes made by Jordan Crawford, Michael. But, at least he was trying. The fact he has sit even one minute behind a piece of crap like Jeff Teague makes me sick. Yeah, maybe he shouldn’t of threw the pass to Mo Evans (no one should throw a pass to Mo Evans). Maybe, he did get lost on D a few times (Was he along on that? Ummm…let me think….no!) But, to take out a guy giving a spark and reinserting Jamal Crawford for the last 5-6 minutes was a total debacle of a coaching move. Larry Drew, it helps if you watch the game! It does. Because, I watched the game, and I could clearly see that Jordan was the better Crawford last night.
And, guys, let’s just tell this like it is: Jeff Teague is a bad basketball player. He is terrible. He will always be terrible. Saying anything other than that is just wrong. He sucks.
The Hawks do not deserve the fans they have. They really don’t. Rick Sund needs to make a trade. Everyone but Al and Josh are on the table.
And, one last thing about Joe Johnson….I wish he would have went to the Knicks. Those people would chew him up and spit him out. Try telling the NYC public you could “careless” they show up. See how that changes your day. Johnson is a wannabe all star and a total piece of sh#t as a person. I wish he would have left.

Jamal, Marvin, need to be traded, Zaza needs to be further down the bench, but collins is NO better

I came from Dominican Republic to see the Dallas and Boston games.
It is very painful to see my countryman Al Horford’s effort (20-20-5)waisted on a game that besides him only Smoove (20-6-5)played with intensity.
The Hawks need to trade for better bench players.I think it was RAMON who suggested
to get from Sacramento Dalembert,my other countryman Francisco Garcia and Jason Thompson for Zaza,Crawford,Mo Evans, and a first draft pick. That would be a great improvement!
The team has been badly coached, anyway I never thought that Woodson’s assistant was going to be a lot better tham him!

LD have 2 starte twin and put horford at his natural position and move josh 2 small forward, bibby have been playing great so far but starting teague will give you some one who can defend better at the point, plus bibby would make the bench stronger and hopefully marvin coming off the bench will improve his game and he can become the man with the second unit, and can some one tell me why powell is not playing with the second unit go figure.

D. Starks,
Co-sign your 9:23 am. Somebody has to realize that Marvin has received the time to develop and he hasn’t (and probably he doesn’t give a damn about developing). Bringing him from the bench could have a 2-face consecuence: or he wakes up and step up or he gets depressed and become the ultimate invisible man.

One big issue I had with Mike Woodson was that he never shook-up the line-up when it was clear that things were wrong, just hope L.D. doesn’t make the same mistake. Marvin Williams has never deserved to be in the starting line-up, and Jeff Teague should be third string behind Jordan Crawford.

NBA and NCAA should dictate that NBA-elegible players should be at least sophmores or have played 3 years overseas. That would prevent not ready, promising, but high-bust-risk players (MARVIN, Crittenton, Brandan Wright,ODEN, and the list goes on…) enter the draft.

Time to blow this team up. Other than Josh, Al….I guess there is no one else, really….we have nothing.
And, to all the Joe Johnson lovers out there…answer me this question…what game have we won this year because of him? You know, for $24 million, you kind of expect some things. as far as the zone.. i think the coaches had the right concepts in place and prepared.. its just that players were hesitant in attacking it. they looked dazed and confused. particularly the 2nd unit. Jeff just deferred to Jamal and settled.. Jamal pump faking on passes to open cutters even after coach inserting Josh with the group. its a phantom defense.. you just have to trust in ball movement and have the SKILL to make accurate passes.

Yeah we need a PG and C, but also need more than that. As we can now see we need help at the SF position. Personally only the PF and SG positions are locked down. Truthfully only the SG is the locked down position depending on who you ask.
We already know we need to move Al back to PF and get a legit 6-11 to 7-1 guy in here to clog the lane.
Again with Jeff Teague he needs time just like Collins as someone else stated last season they barely played any games.
I’m going to stop this argument cause it’s pointless.

I have to wonder if Rick Sund is intentionally running this team into the ground.
Jordan Crawford is obviously a gem. He could evolve into the next Dwayne Wade. He is an aggressive and able scorer, but Larry Drew lets him ride the bench during games where he could be getting invaluable experience for later on in the season. If I were the Hawks management, I would have hyped Jordan up during the preseason and gave him plenty of minutes. He has not disappointed, and the Hawks would have been better off depending on him, while perusing real big men in the off season, than signing Joe Johnson with the NBA’s biggest contract of the 2010 offseason.
Why did we let Byron Scott and Avery Johnson get away? Why did we even bother to interview them in the first place, if we were just going to recycle one of Mike Woodson’s lieutenants… and then act surprised when he makes the exact same mistakes that we complained about when Woodson was coach?

Two points:
1. The narrative about the last shot by Joe missed an important element; if Joe had actually tried to draw the foul by getting Chandler in the air an initiating the contact, the game could have gone into overtime based on Joe making the three free throws.
2. Josh outscored the future Hall of Famer in a head to head match up( while spending some time guarding Chandler and breaking up at least 2 alley oop attempts ).
ASA’s 20 rebounds was a major factor as well as the 3 blocked shots.

Two points:
1.If Joe had actually had tried to draw the foul against Chandler , the opportunity to tie the game at the free throw line would have made a come back would have been much easier. Instead, we got a iso Joe ,off balance heave that had no chance to go in.
2.Josh outscored the future Hall of Famer head to head AND split time guarding Chandler and broke up at least alley oop attempts to him above the rim.

Two additional points about the game:
1.If Joe had actually tried to draw a foul call on his three point attempt, he could have had the opportunity to send the game into overtime at the foul line.ASA’s poor hand off not withstanding.
2. Josh outscored the future Hall of Famer head to head while also spending time guarding Chandler and breaking up two attempted alley oops to him at the rim.

Jamal Crawford has a couple of bad games, and he should be traded. (LOL). After one game, Jordon Crawford is better than Jamal (LOL). The problem with the Hawks, as I have said for the past 3 years, is the bum that starts at the 3, Marvin Williams. Why not just start every game with 4 players instead of 5. We would do just as good, because Marvin brings nothing every game. Woodson is at home watching games on tv because he put his faith in Marvin, and Drew will be in the same position, if he does not figure it out soon.

We’ve lost 5 of the last 7. Lose to Boston, that’ll be 6 of the last 8 . . putting us at 8 – 6.
After Boston, these are our next 6 games:
@ NJ
WAS
@ NY
@ TOR
MEM
PHI
In two weeks, this team could conceivably be 14 – 6 . . . but still be a “fools’s gold” type team because our best win would’ve been @ Cleveland. More than likely, you’re talking 12 – 8.
The Hawks had a dream type schedule handed to them to start the season. Really, all they had to do was take care of business at home, and they could’ve posted a huge record.
But with us already being 8 – 5, it means this team has little margin for error. This team is at the point now in which it can’t afford to have a bad game vs a bad team.
Unless this team really starts to gel, we’re not going to post much better than a .500 record in December. So however many games we’re over .500 at the end of November, will probably be equal to the same number of games we’re over .500 at the end of December.

How can you use a #1 pick on a guard that can’t shoot. It’s truely amazing how some of these guys land jobs. I mean, one of the first things anybody who knows anything whatsoever about basketball does when they evaluate a player is assess their ability to shoot. After all, that is the name of the game right. Especially at guard. Dude is getting worse. He looks scared to death. He’s relieved when he draws iron. LOL!!
I predicted that this team would finish in the 6-8 slot and get beat by either Boston, Miami or orlando in the 1st round. They seem to be on track for that.

my last post talking about how I’d been here 10 years was just an example. Because I am actually new member. Still with that said everyone on here is complaining without providing many solutions. There are some that are, but saying we need a PG and C isn’t a solution. Cause we could get Hasheem Thabeet or Greg Oden ship away Marvin to Portland or Memphis.
What do we get in return a Project C and a Super bust in G. Oden. Just saying.
Depending on how this game goes Monday night will tell the real tale of the how the hawks will fair this year. This is a team we sweep last year the mighty Boston Celtics who got to the Championship. If we can’t beat them then our chances of even being a 5 or 6 seed will slip badly we may wound up in 8th. Which would truly be the worse thing ever that means were back at square 3.
Square 1 means 13 win season and Square 2 would be the next season with only 26 wins.

Basically, you’ve got the same team as last year, and last year’s team was a good team except there was no coach.. So, you should be able to expect good results. At least Drew appears to understand something’s not right.
The team reflects its host city, Atlanta,, and the nonstop gangsta “blogging” bears this out. No cohesion. No intellect. Flashy emotional blasts leading nowhere.. Give me what I want or I’ll throw a tantrum. Add on 100% inflation and you’ll have Hotlanta soon enough. .
Sigh…Pachulia needs a good pair of hands. Teague needs a brain tranplant, preferably Rondo’s.
I’m a total Jamal fan. But if he’s screwing up on purpose, I’d return the favor. Sit him down. Don’t trade him. Don’t allow him in the huddle. Just put him on the bench to showcase his product.

Worst case scenario the Hawks finish no worst than 6th(The only teams capable of passing them is the Bulls and the Bucks). Best case scenario Hawks finish 3rd(Doc likes to rest his old guys in the regular season, Boston in 4th). Bottom line the Hawks are deep and talented, they do have two weak links(Marvin & Teague) L.D. has to make the right moves with the line-up.

Teague shot the ball well enough in college, and he even played some off-guard at times. But for some reason, he is playing scared. And Woody is not an excuse for us bloggers anymore. Teague just isnt taking advantage of his opportunity. but there’s still time.
terrell,
Wade has missed time for the Heat, and they have a completely different team that they have to figure out the Chemistry. Plus both Wade and Lebron needs the ball, so there will be some adjustment.
How long have these Hawks been together? 3 years? I understand that we’re learning a new motion offense. But that should not stop them from rebounding and playing defense.
Learning a new motion offense should not stop them from playing aggressive and playing with energy.
IMO, Hawks have no excuses. They’re just not getting the job done.
The good thing, is its still early. I’m sure LD went off on them after the game last night, so it will be interesting to see how they respond against Boston, a team they swept 4-0 last year.

I’m sorry but I’m not buying this they need time to gel.. How long has this group been together? If they cant get it done by now then they never will. LD talked about accountability before the season started yet I haven’t seen any of it… He is looking like Woodrow on the sideline…How does Marvin continue to start? What does he do that helps this team because I don’t see it…. If you don’t see Marvin on the court with your own eyes you would have sworn he wasn’t even playing because he does nothing out there…….People its time to stop with Teague needs the time excuse..LD has given him every chance possible and he has done nothing with it…..He is passive, cant shoot , and the offense stalls when he comes in…I wonder if LD will pull another Woody type move and sit JC2 in the next game instead of getting him some minutes………..Sund needs to make some moves.. Jamal is pouting and hurting the team out there.. ZaZa is terrible. The whole bench is terrible..

Rod,
Jamal is a better player than Jordan. However, when Jamal comes into the game, he tends to do his own thing, and this throws the team offense off, while he goes ISOs. Plus his defense is horrible.
I agree that Marvin is being Marvin, so if Jamal is traded, we could bring in another SF to push marvin (Prince for example), and potentially take his starting spot.
But Marvin has very little trade value, whereas Jamal has a $10 mil expiring contract.
Grandad,
Just because Jamal can handle this being Al and Josh’s team does not mean he should be resigned, and definitely not as a starter.
Do you really want Jamal playing 35 mpg as the starting SG? Have you seen his defense? Does he look like he has bought into LD’s system?

Well stated cp, I’m starting to think a higher power is involved in this Marvin Williams thing. Marvin is nothing more than a sixth man. At least I can say Mo is a better defender than Marvin. With Teague it’s simply frustrating to see guys like John Wall who’s been in the league all but 1 to 2 months mop the floor with the likes of a guy like Jeff Teague!!! Think he still needs more time???

Actually Tyreke & Bibby would start if that trade were realized.
Jamal would reamain 6th man. Everything would remain the same ‘cept
for Tyreke flipping places with Joe. SD would pick up rotation
minutes. Tyreke would play some [1] & [2] as would Jamal & bibby.
Tyreke would defend the [1] more often, in place of Teague.
I would also attempt to trade Marv for Battier’s exp giving us greater
roster flexibility. Just some random thoughts.

Grandad . . now you know that Sac would never do a trade like that. Tyreke is essentially a young JJ, and Dalembert is a huge expiring contract.
Blame your boy Sund for not adequately upgrading the bench over the summer.

Didn’t sign Shaq.

If you were Sacramento, would you trade away your ROY stud (Tyreke) who is only going to get better, and is still on a cheap contract, for a guy who will make $124 mil for the next 6 years?
And not only would they be picking up JJ’s huge contract, Sac would be getting rid of Dalembert’s expiring contract.
I’m a fan of JJ, but no way would I (or Sac) do that deal.
I think ASG made the right move in re-signing JJ. If he leaves, we start Jamal at SG, and maybe bring Chills back. But thats all the salary cap space we would have. And does anybody want Jamal playing 35 mpg as the starter?
My only gripe with resigning JJ was the 6th year. But I understand its all about supply and demand. The Bulls and Knicks were offering him 5 years, so the Hawks offerred 6 to make sure he sticks around.
I think JJ will get back to the old JJ though. I’m not worried about him. His history suggests he will get back on track eventually.
If we can work out a deal with Sacramento involving Jamal and Dalembert, then I’m all for it.

And that’s the move to make . . . Jamal for Samuel. You get a big who can defend and rebound, plus block shots.
Offensively, you let Teague and Jordan see if they can play together better than Teague and Jamal. People keep saying that Teague can’t play with Jamal, and would be a better player without him, so that would give you a chance to see if it’s true or not.
Sund won’t make a move though. And the ASG wouldn’t dare let him add a multi-year contract in place of a Jamal trade.

“Check yourself before you wreck yourself! It drives me crazy when people complain and can’t spell!”
Thanks for calling that out but the word worst was not misspelled. OK you perhaps thought it was misused. When I’m upset and it’s very late (2:56 AM) with a few too many drinks naturally that makes for a bad combination. Or if I’m rushed for something more important, I will just post a draft since this is only a blog and certainly not a formal article. But if we are going to go there with the formal dance then consider this:
I think you are a bit overly picky considering the words worst and worse can be tricky words even with a sober state of mind.
Use ‘worse’ if you’re comparing two things: “I think eggplant is worse than squash, but that’s just my opinion.”
Use ‘worst’ if you’re comparing multiple things: “I disagree. Eggplant and boiled cabbage are both vile, but squash is the worst!”
Apparently, your attempt at my grammar correction was based on your assumption that in my quote:
“Maybe he attended the same party JJ attended and got caught-up in drinking too much booze or worst.”
I was comparing two things, Jamal drinking too much booze and one other thing (Jamal was doing), in that case, the use of the word “worse” is correct as you pointed out. That would be a fair assumption on your part. But what if I had multiple things in mind when I made that quote (which I did) such as booze, women, drugs and his poor performance was the worst? Remember, I am the creator of that quote, not you. Is this an OJ rush to judgment thing? Yes, I admit I was sleepy and overly comfy and didn’t bother to expand the sentence with all the details for clarity but again, this is only a blog and I think you got my drift. You will be over worked and under paid if you aspire to be the grammar queen traffic cop on this blog not just with others but also yourself.

northcyde,
I think the trade to make after December 15th, (if Sacramento is willing), is Jamal and ZaZa for Dalembert and their backup SF Antoine Wright.
Why would Sacramento do it?
Jamal is instant offense off the bench for them, and would help take the load of Tyreke Evans. Plus they still get an expiring to replace Dalembert’s expiring. And ZaZa provides cheap affordable help at Center while Sacramento waits for Cousins to develop.
Why would ATL do it?
They get a more athletic big who rebounds and blocks shots better than ZaZa, and they get rid of Jamal, opening up more PT for Jordan.
Plus by getting Antoine Wright, Mo Evans can share the backup SG role with Jordan.

drmaryb gosh i agreed with a lot you are saying. i did not like woody as a coach & seemed to think ld was doing all of the right things. i am starting to doubt him unfortunely. first i dont think he is using teague right. he needs to use teague to replace bibby, not jc1. jc1 is not a point guard & it is known that jj & jc1 can not play well together. he needs to sit jj azz down when he is not hitting his shots. when jj is not making shots his whole game drops several notches down. i never see him trying to run a fast break or driving hard to the basket. he still tends to hold on to the ball to long & dribbles way to much. well this is just how the man always plays. he really never dives for balls, most of his assists are not great passes but giving the ball to some one with the time running out. he is also not a great clutch player. i really never could figure out why every body thought he was so great. ld certainly should be giving a hell of a lot more playing time to jc2 as he played great in the summer & preseason., every one should be able to see that he will be a star if we dont fk him up like we did with teague. teague needs more time & to be played more smartly. if he dont make it here he probably will some where else. marvin should not be starting but coming off the bench. smith & horford have been playing great & need to get more shots. zazza is just horrible & mo will never be much better. jc2 has to be better utilized & be giving a clear role. ld has to look at the game situation
& sub better. he needs to play smith & horford more, not taking them out of the game for long stretches.

If the Hawks need offense in the fourth, it will be hard to justify leaving Marvin in. But if they have a lead, I would like to see Marvin in there for defense.
But you realize in 20 something minutes of PT, we are complimenting Marvin for 2 buckets (including a wide open 3), 1 assist, and having a a few good defensive sequences.
The bottomline is we need more from him. LD had more confidence in Jamal, who struggled all night (33 mins, 2-9 FG, 5 turnovers) than he did in Marvin.

“But Sund, Atlanta’s general manager, thought it was premature to give up on Atlanta’s talented core when it hadn’t been through enough tests.” .
How many tests do we need to go through? I guess he’s giving them one more test with a different coach. And if that doesnt work, then he will make moves.
The problem is, if Rick waits until the end of the season to make a move, his options will be limited. Jamal and Mo will be gone, but we will probably be over the cap, with only Bibby as the expiring and tradeable contract. And with a new CBA, how will that affect the salalries?
Right now, our core should be Josh, Al and JJ. Everybody else is expendable for the right move. But I dont think Rick is looking for the right move. He is just watching to see how things work out..

Bibby has shown he’s willing to give what he can. He does seem better with 20-25 minutes a night. That’s where Teague has to step in. Teague is playing good D, but you can tell the offense stalls when Teague comes in. Is that a JC1 issue or a Teague issue?
Thus far Bibby is proving his worth. Marvin is the invisible man again. Definite AMEN to others showing what they worked on in the offseason. Marvin worked on books, not basketball.

November 22nd, 2010
12:34 pm
The Hawks have (primarily just) one problem: their bench. The Hawks starting 5 are among the best starting 5 in the league. Three of the Hawks starters are potential All Stars. Marvin and Bibby are both solid role players.
But who is behind these starting 5?
(1) Jamal Crawford: When he is on, he is magnificent … offensively. His defense is atrocious. When he is off, he hurts the Hawks way more than he helps. So far this season, he has been off way more than he has been on.
(2) Jeff Teague: There is hope that he will improve through out the year, but as of right now, he is not that good. He lacks a jump shot. The offense stalls under his leadership (in comparison to Bibby at least). And he struggles fundamentally on defense. However, he has talent. If he can improve some of his fundamentals, he will be a good back up.
(4) Mo Evans: As a back-up defensively minded 2, he would be a solid option. But he is the Hawks’ back up 3, and he doesn’t match up well against larger 3s. His offensive skill set is good enough to keep the defense honest, but not any better.
(5) Jordan Crawford: In his limited playing time, he has shown flashes of promise, but c’mon, we all know he is not quite good enough to be rotational player. (Still I say get him some minutes, especially when JC1 is off.)
(6): Zaza Pachulia: He is full of hustle and heart … unfortunately not much else. If he improved his “hands” and quickness a bit, I think he could be a more consistent contributor. He would be a solid 2nd or 3rd big man off the bench, but the fact that he is the 1st big man option off the Hawks’ bench speaks volumes for the Hawks’ lack of depth.
(7) Josh Powell: He is playing better than I expected, but those expectations were very low.
(8) Jason Collins: Looking much improved over last year, but, again this is not saying much considering how bad he was last year.
(9) Etan Thomas: Well, the fans (including most of the bloggers here) asked for a big big man. All of you oohed-and-aahed over his “guns” when the Hawks signed him. Too bad he is worse than Jason Collins.
When Jamal is off, there is little to no offense coming off the bench. The defense-as-a-second-unit is also subpar.
The Hawks could have been a competitor this year if:
(1) They signed a quality back-up SF (there were a small handful of them that went cheap).
(2) Teague blossomed by season’s end
(3) The Hawks monitored JC1’s and the rest of the team’s performance. Trade JC1 for a solid big man or solid PG by trade deadline … which ever one was needed more.
Two of these options were in the ASG’s control. Teague’s improvement is not. However, if the Hawks would have signed a solid SF, the Hawks would have had a lot more viable options that could have improved the team, even if Teague did not improve much. (Signing a solid 3, in many ways, would have potentially made JC1, MO, or Teague expendable. The failure to sign a 3 put the Hawks in position such that if they made a trade to fill one hole, the Hawks probably would still have another hole.)

“LOL. A healthy Speedy might have saved Woody’s job, but now you think that’s some kind of insult to compare Teague to him.”
Samuel, get real. If Teague can produce like a healthy Speedy when he was the 7th PG drafted, then we’re getting about what one would expect.
Sautee,
You kinda lost me here. Just to clarify my statement. Speedy Sucked and Teague sucks. A guard that can’t shoot is useless on a basketball court. My thing is, why draft a 7th best anything. All the scouting reports I saw on Teague said he had bad mechanics(understatement) on his shot. A couple said he shot a palm/knuckle ball. Ding.Ding.Ding.Ding!!!. The reports also said he was turnover prone which he definitely is. Not good ingredients for a point guard.
As for Speedy saving Woody’s job. I don’t think anything could have done that. You guys would have been content with “Ronald McDonald”. Anybody but Woody. So now you got your wish and we’re basically where we were last year only a step below in my opinion. I expected that. Time will tell if LD can translate that “smooth” rap into victories over playoff caliber teams. So far, he’s not getting it done.

OH yea,
Add the fact that Teague is timid and not confident. So what “does” he bring to the table? Quickness and jumping ability. You can find that on any playground in Atlanta

@ Fundamentals
The situation with Teague is kind of sticky if you ask me. You asked me if we’ve seen any improvements on him since last season that’s the thing what do we really have to go on from last season.
To me and this is only my opinion I’m treating Teague like a 2nd year rookie. Because last year I never got to see much of him to make a judgement about him. I think Teague’s confidence is the problem because he shows signs of being a great ball player here and there.
As for Jordan Crawford he’s basically JC1 plus the defense which is what we needed so he’ll be one of the best SG’s we’ve ever drafted I believe.
Still I’m going to give Teague a lot more time in my eyes it takes 3 years to determine who’s a complete bust, and This is only Teague’s 2nd season. Look at Marvin it took some of us 6 years to realize we drafted only a role player with that ………….2005 draft with the 2nd pick(hard for me to say that even to this day).
On a side note looking back at that draft of 2005 there are only about 10-12 players that stood out, and now I’m mad even though we choose Marvin over CP3 we also had a chance to score Monta Ellis and Macin Gortat. Lol

Exactly plus not only that Monta Ellis was actually a PG in the draft that year if you go back and look it up at least from where I got the info it said he was a PG.
Still though quite upset we could have also had Danny Granger who went 17th in that draft as well.

The Hawks are symbolic of this city. Basically, it stinks. Why, if you were on the Hawks, would you care? Nobody shows up to watch. Same with the Braves. Atlanta is going to be another Detroit; a black donut hole surrounded by a white outer ring of sprawling, McMansions, have of which are in busted developments. This city is really isn’t a city at all. If not for the gays in midtown, there would be nothing going on, except maybe some “smash n’ grabs” or murders. Wanna send your kid to Atlanta public schools? Why would you? Dysfunction everywhere. Build a friggin Ferris Wheel and a happy-go-lucky trolley. That is Atlanta’s solution. What a joke of a city. Hope Kasim brought back some great ideas from London. Hope he flew at least business class.
