Deron Williams and the Jazz slipped past the Hawks. (AP Photo)
–When things got tight down the stretch, you could see the Jazz thrive on the situation as the Hawks started hiccuping. Before the game, L.D. praised the Jazz for their mental toughness and discipline and then the Hawks saw exactly what he meant. Utah rallied for a W for the fourth straight game.
– “They are a team that has no quit in them,” L.D. said. “At no point in the game could we relax or take possessions off because this is a team that’s going to be solid for 48 minutes. We may get a little lead in them, but they have no quit in them.”
– It’s not like the Hawks quit, either. It’s just that for the third time in the last four games they weren’t good enough to finish off a quality opponent. Viewed in isolation, this wasn’t such a terrible loss for the Hawks. But placed in the context of those losses to Phoenix and Orlando and the surrender against Milwaukee, this was a game the Hawks couldn’t lose.
– It’s still early in the season but no doubt the Hawks are in crisis mode. “We have to learn how to grind in crunch-time situations,” L.D. said. “We’ve got to make the plays.”
– They did that when the opponents weren’t so tough. “I didn’t get too excited about 6-0 because we weren’t playing playoff teams,” J.J.said. “Now we are playing playoff teams.”
– He’s probably discounting the 6-0 start too much considering the four road Ws and signs of growth when it comes to closing out close games away from Philips. But clearly the Hawks have a lot of work to do to be considered anything but a middling playoff team in the East.
– Asked before the game how the Hawks could avoid another debacle like the Bucks game, L.D. said: “Make some shots.” Well, the Hawks made nearly half of their shots (35 of 71) and still loss thanks missing 11 of 21 free throws and giving up 15 offensive rebounds.
– On the free throws, L.D. said: “We work on them and practice. You just have to step up, focus and concentrate and knock your free throws down.” On the rebounds, he said the Hawks spent all of Thursday’s practice working on defense, with two sessions devoted to rebounding: “It’s a problem. It won’t be fixed until we get into our mindset that we have to pay more attention and be more focused. It will be worked on every day in practice, I can tell you that. It won’t be something we will let slide.”
– L.D. talks about focus and concentration and mindset, then you see the Hawks can’t execute the things he spends so much time on and you wonder if he can get this group of guys to do those kinds of things all the time.
– The Hawks made fundamental mistakes down the stretch.
– Marvin had a fastbreak layup and could neither score nor get fouled and instead fumbled the ball out of bounds
– Smoove tried to feed Al for a lob dunk that wasn’t there and Deron Williams broke it up.
– Kirilenko stole the ball from J.J.
– The Hawks played a great defensive possession, forcing Milsap to a rush a 3-point attempt, but left Al Jefferson alone to rebound the miss.
– And then Al missed the free throws. “It’s a tough loss to take,” Al said. “We were tough and we hung in there. I have to take the blame for not knocking down those free throws at the end. But I will just have to keep working because I know I will be back in that situation again.”
– “They just made plays to win the game,” Josh said.
– “We just have to put this behind us and move on,” J.J. said.
– Marvin seemed to be moving OK but he missed some easy baskets. Mo had s strong stint in the first half with three rebounds in eight minutes.
– The bench held the lead in the first half and extended it in the third quarter. All of the starters were back in after the Jazz tied it at 78-78.
– L.D. has instituted what he calls a “20-20″ rule: Guys who don’t play 20 minutes in a game now will do 20 minutes of cardio work after. So Zaza, JC2, Teague and Powell ran sprints and Twin hit the treadmill. I’m guessing Mo was exempt because he’s coming off an injury.
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

IF MARVIN IS STILL HURTING, WHY IS HE PLAYING?
CAN’T OUR COACHES SEE THAT EVERY TIME HE MAKES CONTACT WITH A PLAYER, HE FALLS TO THE GROUND?
BENCH HIM OR TRADE HIM

if Marvin could just simply hit a stand-still wide open 3 consistently, he’d be a lot closer to the likes of Kirilenko, R. Jefferson and Ron Artest. He’s too active with his feet while he’s in the air. It’s like, damn Marvin, chill out on those foot-kicking jumpers

Ramon,
I like the idea of Francisco Garcia in this team, coming of the bench of course. Team player, great motivator, leadership skills, like to play defense, hustle, can play PG, SG, and SF, good shooter. I think the trade you proposed could improve the Hawks bench at least 50% over what we have now.

Nash Potatoes!
Hey! Maybe Steve Nash is ready for a change in scenery?
HoopsHype Rumors reported:
Steve Nash has announced that he and wife Alejandra are in the process of a divorce. The Phoenix Suns’ point guard and two-time NBA most valuable player revealed the situation in a statement Saturday, a day after the birth of the couple’s son, Matteo. ESPN.com
PHOENIX SUNS, STEVE NASH | SHARE
He said in the statement to Life & Style Magazine that he and his wife have lived separately for several months but remain firmly committed to raising their children “in the most positive, nurturing way possible.” The couple, together for nine years and married since 2005, also has 6-year-old twin daughters, Lola and Bella. “I want only good things for Ale going forward,” Nash said. “I’m focused on ensuring that our children understand how much they’re adored and loved by us as they continue to adjust to these changes. I would ask that their privacy, and ours as a family, be respected as we move forward. This will be my only statement on this.” ESPN.com

O’Brien we have been waiting on Marvin to step it up for years now. Dude has been in the league for what now 6 years? If it aint happened by now it just aint gone happen. What you see with the invisible man is what you get… A good game followed by a few average games sprinkle in some invisible games then another good game and that equals Marvin.. Dude just has no impact on the game. Its time to let some other team try to tap into this so called potential he supposedly still has…. When he was on that break the other night I knew he wouldn’t be able to finish at the rim and what do you know he blowed the shot. How are you that tall with those long arms and cant finish at the rim over anybody smh.

1) Marvin CANNOT draw contact and finish a play. Dude ends up on the ground any time he is touched
2) This team is soft. Where are the confrontations? Where are the technical fouls? These guys play no defense and let teams run over them
PICK A FIGHT
COMMIT A HARD FOUL
DO SOMETHING

Still having these Marvin debates? The guy is useless. I told you that 3 years ago. I seriously doubt that he would still be in the league if it was not for the Hawks. His game was terrible 4 years ago, and he has not done one thing to improve his game. As long as we keep playing 4 against 5 will will continue to have the same problems.

LOL Rod from CP.
4 on 5? More like 3 on 5. Bibby is that bad 80 % of the time.
Marvin is SOFT. He has NEVER stated his desire to be a star in this league.
He has publicly stated on MULTIPLE occasions that he dislikes watching basketball games.
He CANNOT finish at the basket after drawing contact. He gets the ball stripped EVERY time there’s a defender there.
Dude sucks and is soft. He WOULD NOT START ON ANY OTHER PLAYOFF TEAM IN THIS LEAGUE

Totally agree JeJe. Bibby is at least a threat offensively. Teams don’t guard Marvin, or when they do, they put guys like Boobie Gibson on him.

How bout a little energy fellas? Omg! Startin to look like Woody’s Hawks. And why is Marvin starting? I like the other lineup. Bring his butt off the bench. I gues those 1st 3 out of 4 games were a fluke. Must’ve realized he was still Marvin.

It’s actually 3 against 5. Marvin is useless, and so is Mike Bibby. All he’s good for is occasionally getting hot and knocking down a few long jumpers every other game or 2. The rest of his game is trash.
Other teams have random guys off the bench that can just come in and occasionally get hot because they are good jump shooters (james jones, eddie house, jason kapono, etc.)….are these people you would really want as starters at their positions??? no.
We need a real PG that can compete with these good PGs so many other teams seem to have nowadays.
