Atlanta Hawks: Magic 93, Hawks 89

Dwight got his but Magic had to win it late. (Gary W. Green, Orlando Sentinel)

Orlando– Afterward, the Hawks seemed caught somewhere between being satisfied with their effort and disappointed with their execution when things got tight at the end.

– Asked if there was any consolation in giving a competitive effort against the Magic under the circumstances (back-to-back, no Marvin or Mo, recent history), L.D. said: “None whatsoever.”

– But he later added: “They came in here and played with a lot of energy right off the bat and I am very proud of them for doing that.”

– The Hawks were primed from the jump and built a 21-8 lead. Smoove was the catalyst with seven points, four rebounds, two assists a steal and just one turnover. “We wanted to be able to show the Orlando Magic we can come in and make a game out of it and not just hand them the game,” he said.

– Things went awry when L.D. started sending in the reserves. After Josh Powell scored for a 23-10 lead, Atlanta’s possessions to end the first quarter went like this: Jamal miss, Jamal turnover, Zaza turnover, Jamal miss, Jamal missed free throw on Rashard Lewis tech, Zaza turnover, Teague turnover, Josh miss.

– Meanwhile, the Magic scored 11 straight points with VC working against Jamal and Gortat against Zaza. The Magic beat the Hawks to some loose balls during that stretch.

– “When I went to the bench, the energy level went down,” L.D. said. “We kind of lost focus. Offensively, we started trying to do it individually and defensively we didn’t play with as much physicality as our first unit. That got Orlando going.”

– This was another game where Atlanta’s offensive numbers looked pretty good but the game was close because of a glaring deficiency in one area. It was the turnovers again tonight: 17 for 22 Magic points. Orlando also converted a high percentage of its 11 offensive rebounds into points with 16.

– Just 19 points for the Hawks in the fourth quarter with 7 of 20 shooting. Al said the Hawks lacked organization. “It was taking us too long to get into our offensive sets,” he said. “So instead of getting into our plays at 16 or 17 [on the shot clock], we were doing it at 8. That was kind of putting ourselves in a jam.”

VC had a classic VC game: Superb for stretches but shaky at the end. He left the Hawks an opening with two missed free throws but his driving basket against Horford on a switch was the difference. I couldn’t see the play from way, way up in my media perch and I missed the replay but some Tweeps said it was a bad call.

– “I watched him last night and Horford was switching everything,” Jason Williams said. “I was kind of surprised they waited that late to do it.”

– No need to switch with Jameer (ankle) out and Duhon in. J-Will finished for Orlando instead of Duhon.

– “I thought our execution of what the gameplan was was right on the money,” L.D. said. “We wanted to defend the three; I thought we did a good job of that. We wanted to defend Howard one-on-one; I thought we did a good job of that. We just didn’t make timely plays.”

– J.J. had another strong game. He had just one turnover, but it was critical: Dribbling across the lane with the Hawks leading 82-81, he lost the ball out of bounds. J-Will made a 3 after that and the Magic never trailed again as the Hawks missed three consecutive 3-pointers (Bibby, J.J. and, um, Josh).

Twin did about the only thing he could with Dwight, which is to hold his ground and make Howard use his athleticism to score. Howard did so, going for 27 on 10 of 20 shooting and seven free throws. Etan and Zaza did their best, too, but Dwight couldn’t be denied despite foul trouble.

– “He’s a monster down there and seems like his post game has only gotten better,” Josh said. “That’s going to be hard top stop when he is doing that and making free throws at the same time.”

– It helped that the Hawks caught the Magic on a night when they missed a handful of open looks at the 3-point line (Bibby was particularly guilty of losing his man). “I thought tonight was a good win for us because we’re shooting the ball so poorly right now,” Stan Van Gundy said. “Our perimeter shooting has been abominable and we had to win just by fighting.”

– Still, several times in the fourth quarter the Hawks worked hard to scramble and find shooters, the kind of extended effort L.D. has been seeking. The Magic never really delivered the long stretches of perimeter daggers that usually do in the Hawks.

– At least the Hawks now believe they have a plan that can work against Orlando. “No question,” Al said. “I think now more than ever. It’s a new year. We are a different team. We feel confident. It was encouraging.”

– — “Definitely this is something we can build on,.” J.J. said. “We feel like we can honestly play with any team in this league. I think our coaching staff does a great job of preparing us and getting us ready for games.”

– I’m out, Hawks fans.

lewis,

What is funny is the Hawks had the perfect scenario to beat the Magic and still lost. The Magic shot horribly and the Hawks still shot themselves in the foot with all the turnovers.

What I saw

I saw a little brother have his
1st real fight with his older brother.

I saw the Hawks take one step closer to beating the only bully of their Block.(Heat and Celtics don’t bully the Hawks)

I saw a team that played 3 back-to backs in 8 games this season, on the road against a rested team.

I saw a defensive game plan that understands it’s about the 3pt shooters and the BIG CENTER.

I saw very, very, very good defense on their shooters.

I saw a coach make adjustments that worked for the most part.

I saw a 4pt loss to the Magic after a back-to-back on the raod.

What I read is writers making excuses for the Magic, instead of giving the Hawks Credit…..That’s fine, we still have 3 more game with them.

I do think this was a game for the taking, and the Hawks missed a golden opportunity. Magic missed a lot of 3s, and Jameer Nelson (who was missing) usually torches Bibby.

But on the bright side, regardless of the reason, Hawks kept it close. And if we meet them again in the playoffs, I feel confident that we would not be swept, and the games would be close. Isn’t that a major improvement from last year?

KevinM,

The only other option is to stick with the lineup they’ve been starting (Twin/Al/Josh/JJ/Bibby), and bring Marvin off the bench.

My concerns with Jamal is 1) his defense and 2) When his shot is off, he does almost nothing else to help.

Thats why Marvin needs to step up and be more consistent offensively. If Marvin can step up offensively, then we wont have to rely on Jamal as much, especially in the fourth.

And for those interested in trading for Haywood, I would suggest including ZaZa in the trade scenario.

I remember the pre-season article about Josh Powell and Etan Thomas bringing toughness and physicality to the Hawks. Powell has been good (better than I expected), but tough? Physical? I haven’t seen it. I’ve seen him make some nice jumpers and runners, but I haven’t seen him battle on the boards or do anything else that screams “tough guy in the house”. I’ll give Etan a pass, since he looks about as rusty as an old Weber grill. It’s too bad that a legit tough guy like Ty Hill can’t simply “teach toughness”. This team could use a Ty Hill circa 1998-2000 type of player.

Ramon,

You said: “Also, the ball still doesn’t move as much when JC1 is in the game. While sometimes it can seem like a big game changer in a positive way. It ends up leaving the rest of the bench unprepared to knock down shots or have any ball movement.”

I agree wholeheartedly. Jamal is trying to create on his own too often instead of trusting the ball movement. Everybody on the team trusts HIM to be a shotmaker, so even within the offense, he’ll get plenty of shots. He just needs to trust that more. He’s also making unforced errors trying to overpass at times. It reminds me of Josh last year at times, trying to “make something happen” but all too often that something was a turnover.

Just trust the motion, Jamal.

M. Bibby is a liability on defense, but does what is needed on offense, that’s the problem with ATL…The smart teams take advantage of the pick-n-roll with Bibby and it kills us each and every time b/c Horford and/or Smith is chasing around a guard they have no business checking…

A new thing I see is Smith taking more and more jumpshots and last night it really show b/c he was hitting plenty, but I don’t wanna see that from him…They key plays last night was when Bibby could have taken the 3 himself, yet he passes to Smith who then takes a 3, when he could have easily drove to the hoop…Then them switching them pick-n-rolls allowing Carter to ease his way to the basket on Horford for an and-one, that samething was happening against PHX…

They need to tell Smith to calm down on the 3s and jumpshots, go the hole…And if Bibby can’t play defense, pull him from the game b/c he’s been the problem these last 2 games…

No, Ramon. Drew should have taken the 2nd unit back out the game a few minutes to remind them that they are playing Orlando and that they needed to play smarter and maintain the lead that the 1st unit built. Instead, he let the 2nd unit squander a 13 point lead as if the 1st unit would build that lead back up. From a mental standpoint the 2nd unit gave Orlando life and made it difficult for the 1st unit to regain that energy that got them that big lead.

Release E. Thomas his value added is not a plus…Sund go get Earl Clark from PHX for a 2nd round draft, his value added will be rebounding and spread the floor on 2nd unit….Also a capable SF in Damien Wilkins could help (value added) at least for a 10 day contract….LD dropped the ball last night when he sub the starters and killed the momentum the starters built with more than 6 mins remaining in the quarter…His recognition that the mojo was lost was too late..

I saw a team that played 3 back-to backs in 8 games this season, on the road against a rested team. – Answer: A rested team? it was orlando’s 3rd game in 4 nights. try again.

I saw a defensive game plan that understands it’s about the 3pt shooters and the BIG CENTER.- Answer- Magic missed half a dozen WIDE OPEN 3’s good luck having tht happen again. Dwight scored 27 great defense on the big center. LOL try again.

I saw very, very, very good defense on their shooters- Lol again if you think orlando will miss open shots the next time you meet your nuts. try again.

I saw a coach make adjustments that worked for the most part.- all teh adjustments except for helping you score on the #1 defense of the league in orlando holding your “High powered motion offense” to 89 points. try again.

I saw a 4pt loss to the Magic after a back-to-back on the raod.- More excuses when you had a achance to control the game up 13 early with the magic reeling an dhoward out early in the first – try again.

What I read is writers making excuses for the Magic, instead of giving the Hawks Credit…..That’s fine, we still have 3 more game with them.- Hawks getting credit for one thing not laying down for the first time in the last 8 games vs orlando other then the fluke buzzer beater late regular season last year by J Smith.

Everyone needs to calm down. I thought the Hawks showed good effort and just came up short because they still need to execute better down the stretch. Rome was not built in a day!!! It’s still early and the Hawks have to learn from the tough losses like the last 2 nights in order to grow. The test to me will be how they respond now after 2 close losses. Will they get back to their wining ways or will these last 2 games deflate them mentally. They need to stay on course and continue their good preparation and effort. Everything else will work itself out. Larry Drew has done a superb job and if they continue to by into his philosophy by the middle and end of the year they will definitely be winning games like the 2 they just lost. Like any other team on the brink of greatness they will have to trust the system and learn how to make the plays necessary down the stretch against great teams to win. That doesn’t happen overnight!!! They have to grow more comfortable in those situations and develop the confidence to make the right plays at the right time. I believe they are definitely going in the right direction and if they continue playing the way they are playing it will bear fruit!!!!!!!

SR…Orlando shot 18% from 3 against the Hawks & 17% from 3 against the Heat…Those by the way are the only two opponents with a winning record that the Magic have played…Was it just a fluke or something more?

Also, as far as who’s schedule was tougher coming in: It was the Hawks’ 8th game of the season (5 on the road), and Orlando’s 6th game of the season (2 on the road).

I was proud of the Hawks effort, and will make no excuses. We got beat by committing turnovers and not keeping VC under control (not necessarily the 19 points, but the 75% shooting). It was great to win the rebounding battle, and I love how Josh & Al keep knocking down those jumpers. Both should be considered as allstars.

Josh Smith – 14.4 pts, 9.6 rebs, 50% fg%, 40% 3pt%, 4.3 assts, 3.38 blocks & 1.38 steals.

Al Horford – 17.1 pts, 9.5 rebs, 65% fg%, 3.3 assts, .63 blocks & .63 steals.

Jeff Schultz actually wrote something about the Hawks that is worth reading. Check it out, if you haven’t already. It’s about the Crawford/Prince trade rumors.

I agree with Schultz, the Hawks should pass on the deal. I like Prince and think he would help. But, Crawford and Teague for Prince and just Andrew Bynum? No way. Detroit needs to give up more than that. I would make the deal if it were Prince and either Hamilton or Jason Maxiel. Anything other than that, no deal.

astro joe, how can you say Powell has not been physical? He has. The guy has been a banger down low, mainly on D. Plus, his jump shot has been a great surprise. I never knew the guy could shoot like he does!

Ramon

I can’t say that I wouldn’t be interested in trading JC1 for Prince. I don’t think I would include Teague. Maybe Mo Evans but not Teague. A line up of Bibby, Joe, Prince, Josh, Al would be a good defensive unit with three players who can knock down the kick out jumpers. Also could a line up of Joe, Marvin, Prince, Josh, and Al work periodically as a defensive unit? The thing I would miss about Crawford is when he goes to the free throw line, he’s automatic. However, if you watch Crawford closely, you’ll see that for every 2 points he scores, it seems he gives up at least a point or two also.

JoJo the Godfather

Not sure what to think of the Crawford/Teague for Prince/Bynum rumor…Salaries would have the Hawks taking back an extra $3.5 million or so…For that fact alone, I would say its bogus unless it gets expanded to a bigger deal.

Section 303,

I’m with AJ. Powell has played well for us, but I don’t think he is someone I would refer to as being physical. He has not shown me enough in terms of rebounding and defense to make me think of him as physical. Just my opinion.

As for the media speculated deal, it’s not as bad as it sounds. Prince gives the Hawks a solid perimeter defender, who although he doesn’t provide the offense that Jamal does, he will not hurt us as bad either.

And that way, Mo Evans would play more minutes at SG, plus this would also allow LD to find more minutes for Jordan Crawford. And although Bynum does not have the on the ball defense that Teague does, he is a better scorer.

And this being a motion offense, Prince/Mo/Bynum may not be that bad offensively, and they might be better defensively than Mo/Jamal/Teague. Plus Prince has championship experience.

That being said, I don’t see why Detroit makes this deal, because they already have Rip Hamilton, and the Hawks wouldnt want any extra salary.

“However, if you watch Crawford closely, you’ll see that for every 2 points he scores, it seems he gives up at least a point or two also.” Ramon .

Co-sign. We focus on his offense so much, that its easy to miss his turnovers, or his bad shot selection at times, or his bad defense.

For some reason, I’m into the trade rumor talk these days.

Just checked NBA.com. Shaun Powell wrote a piece about the Suns possibly dealing Nash. He sites the Hawks as a potential trade partner wiht the Suns. He says the Hawks have Crawford’s expiring contract, plus a combination of Teague (I’ll pack his bags), Marvin, or Jordan Crawford. As Austin Powers would say, “ummm…yes, please!”

If the Hawks could get Nash, they would be a serious, serious threat to the Eastern Conference crown.

Hmmm

November 9th, 2010
1:44 pm

MC, can we get a Pape Sy update? How is he feeling? If drew doesn’t see him as a SF (or getting any time there) then why was he drafted when LD knows we needed a SF or a center? They essentially drafted two extra guards, why? A 6′7 PG? He better be Magic Johnson (and he’s not from wha it’ve seen from him).

Hopefully We can snag Tayshaun Prince in Free agency next offseason. He will be unrestricted. Better peremeter D along with keeping Jamal may offset our need for a true “Impact 7 footer.”

Ramon

November 9th, 2010
2:03 pm

By the way, Prince is a career 46% shooter from the SF spot. And only averages 3 points less a game than JC1, while requiring the ball less. Here is a deal that I would consider though. And I actually think the Pistons would go for:

JC1, Mo Evans, and Zaza

for

Prince and Ben Wallace.

You give up two wings for more defense and rebounding. Then having Wallace coming off the bench as your true sixth man, puts him in the similar role Alonzo Mourning played in Miami. Your second unit is left with less pressure to score because they’re able to get more stops!

cp

November 9th, 2010
2:04 pm

303 I would help you pack his bags. A trade for Nash seems to good to be true. I wonder what Phoenix would want for Nash. Deal almost makes too much sense for the Hawks. We know they love this core but if they can get Nash then you gotta do what you gotta do.

newkid

November 9th, 2010
2:12 pm

10% into the season and Hawks biggest surprise has been Josh Smith’s development (including, but not limited to, his jumper) into a legitimate point forward, and LD showing that he indeed has the goods to be a very successful head coach. With continued improvement in his perimeter shooting and man defense in space (especially on smaller 3s), this cat Smith could reach heights I never thought were even remotely possible for him. LD is two breaths of fresh air. A close third has been the consistency of Horford’s 12-15 footer.

Topping the ‘needs improvement’ list is JQuick’s floater, jumper, and management of the offensive sets.

People coming up with trade ideas to address our weaknesses in terms of matching up with championship teams. I like it a lot.

JC1, Mo evans and Zaza for Prince and Ben Wallace? That’s an interesting proposal. Can Prince play backup SG as well?

Nash is a bad defender, almost Bibby status.

Ramon

Lewis, he can’t. But Marvin and JC2 can. If Marvin often times have to guard the other teams’ best wing, I don’t see why he wouldn’t be able to play SG in stretches.

In 2 season Nash would be Bibby Returns. Nash still would leave us vulnerable for screens, switches, and penetration by other teams PG.

In our last two games, we can dissect the stats,
including strengths, weaknesses, mistakes, shortcomings,
pitfalls, and bugaboos. But here it is folks:
We have the talent (to compete). We have the plan (to win).
We have a capable Coach. *(really he’s more than capable)
Althouth it has yet to be revealed. Now here’s the biggie:
Can we learn to win?
Not just win regular games.
Big games.
We can’t quite get over the hump.
In our last two games, we would get the game tied or within
one or two points but…..
We either could not make a stop @ the crucial time.
-Or- we turned it over.
-Or- we couldn’t hit the clutch shot.
-And- we definitely could not make a run to pull away.

As I said before, we have the talent (players, plural),
plan and Coach. So what ingredient is missing?
Heart? No. Competitive spirit? No
Swagger, boldness, daring, *["Belief"]*, (a player, singular)?
Answer = all of the above.
What I’m saying is we’re so darn close.
Sund/ASG do the right thing.
A singular player could add all those intangibles!

Grandad, I seriously believe when the Hawks learn how to draw fouls in the closing minutes of the game, by driving to the lane and drawing contact. “Atlanta’s Success Hinges on Josh Smith’s Quest for Consistency”

Interesting article; While we are all mesmerize at Josh Smith improvements we shouldn’t overlook his inconsistency as he is still growing as a player. Is Josh playing point-forward by design or is he freelancing? His passing sometimes helps but sometimes hurts. He is certainly proving that he can be a complete player but at what expense in game losses will this cost? It is hard to argue that Josh S. has been a factor in the 6-0 run and led the early Orlando lead. But we all know it’s not how you start but how you finish that is the most important; whether it’s an individual game or the entire season. So will we have to wait until Josh Smith completes his maturation before the Hawks reach the promise land is the question? One plausible answer is probably but as long as the team is improving it is certainly worth the wait.

O’Brien, I seriously don’t think they would pass on that deal. They are wanting to move Prince even more than wanting to move Rip. And Zaza is a big who can score and rebound to go along with their young, athletic bigs. And Gordon nor Rip can create their shot like JC1 can.By doing this deal, the Pistons will be able to unload Rip much easier because they won’t be persistent on the other team taking Prince with them. Also, they only have Stuckey playing PG.

Never any such thing as a “good” loss, but there is this to consider:

At least the Hawks now believe they have a plan that can work against Orlando.

That says a LOT to me. These guys always got blown out by Orlando because they never believed they could win . NOW they do, and they can explain how and why they lost, which means they can learn to fix those issues and win. That makes all the difference in the world.
