Atlanta Hawks: Drew faces ‘dilemma’ with Marvin and Mo out

Marvin Williams thinks he could return Sunday vs. the Suns. (Hyosub Shin / hshin@ajc.com)

Marvin is to get an MRI on his right knee today. He’s not making the trip to Minnesota. Neither is Mo (knee).

“It puts us in a little bit of a dilemma because both of our threes are out,” L.D. said.

Jamal (toe) will be on the team flight today but he’s questionable. Even if he plays, L.D. said he’s leaning against putting him in the starting lineup.

“Him off the bench just gives us such a weapon,” he said. ” If I don’t have to disrupt that, I don’t want to.”

So what are his options with the starting lineup?

“I am looking at different things. I am looking at Minnesota and because they have such a big lineup with Beasley, Milicic and Love, I may have to go bigger at the three. If Jamal is at the two, and Joe is at the three, then Joe has to guard Beasley, and I don’t want that.”

Translation: The likely starting lineup will be Bibby, Joe, Smoove, Al and Zaza. That’s how the Hawks finished last night against Detroit, and it worked. Josh will have to hound Beasley the same way he did Tayshaun because Beasley also is a crafty, natural scorer.

Marvin limped into the locker room today but sounded as if he didn’t expect the final prognosis would keep him out for a long time.

“I’m doing OK,” he said. “Still the same as last night. It’s really sore. I’m getting treatment the next couple days and hopefully shoot for Sunday. I’m young. I always heal fast.”

Jamal also said his injury felt the same today as yesterday. He’s not sure if he will play.

“It’s day-to-day,” he said. “It depends on how it feels when I wake up tomorrow.”

MC, what is the status of Pape Sy? Has he been released to work? If so, is he a consideration for minutes at the 3 or at least suit up?

This will be an interesting lineup experiment. The bigger question is for the makeup of the 2nd team when the starters get rest. Might there be a J-Collins or Etan Thomas siting?
I think JJ or J-Smoove might have to be the iron men, with one or both playing extended minutes on the 2nd team to provide guidance and scoring. We can’t leave all the 2nd team point production load on J. Teague and Jo. Crawford.

Hawks were the healthiest team in the NBA last year. And now, the injury bug is here. I hope we can find a way to overcome.

Its ironic that we’ve been clamoring for a legit backup SF for the last 2 years, and now both Marvin and Mo are out.

I hope their injuries will not keep them out past Sunday, because we will need them for Orlando, which is also a back to back.

I still dont know why we didnt sign a guy like Rodney Carney (who signed with the Warriors for the minimum).

Would ‘Nique suggest the signing of Damien Wilkins (is a 10 day contract possible), who is available right now.

he has not been cleared. he did some light shooting after practice today. LD says he’s not suited for the 3.

Injuries are good (in a sense) because it gives the other players a chance to step up and gives the coach a chance to better know his personnel. Especially when these are (relatively) minor injuries. Let Etan and Jason Collins get in there with Joe Johnson and see what happens. Experiment with Josh at the 3 and Al at the 4. Win-win situation.

Good to hear on Marvin. I’m actually excited to hear about the test starting line-up going big. Use Etan and Collins alot the remainder of the week and see if Marvin and Crawford can come back Monday.

It’s not a big deal. Smoove & Beasely matched up all the time vs MIA. It’ll be a good time to prep Etan and Collins for Monday’s action. They’ll actually be ready this time instead of rusty like last year.

I think Beasley will be out for the game tomorrow. I could see Powell getting a few minutes at sf also. I don’t think a line up of Teague, Bibby, Joe would be so bad going against the Timberwolves. My beliefs are if the Hawks come out and get out to a big early lead (similar to how they used to do Toronto), the game in the second half will be an up and down game.

I’m disappointed Marvin is hurt because I was really looking forward to Josh matching up with Love, lol.

I’m confused, JC1 hurt his toe? But the last time we saw him come off the court he was mad that he was coming out of the game. Now the very next day, his toe is too hurt to play? Did he hurt his toe while the 3 reporters were running to Marvin’s locker to interview Marvin? Did one of them accidentally step on his foot? Did he get a pair of the narrow toe instead of the wide toe Stacy Adams? I think he can play if he wants to. I just think his pride may be a little hurt this week. The core players got extension and crunch playing time, and he only got a stumped toe. lol

I am thrilled to see Al at PF and Josh at SF for the Minnesota game. I think it will let us test run a different offensive set that THU, NOV 4, 2010 could use to mix things up.

However I do not want this lineup to become our mainstay for several reasons. First I think Al is not fleet of foot enough to excel at PF all the time. He is quicker and more mobile than most centers which gives him an advantage. Al’s 10 foot jumper is very effective against slow centers. Moving to PF fulltime neutralizes this advantage.

Also Josh is not enough of a consistent scorer to play SF. In certain instances however, like against the Timberwolves, he will thrive. Also moving Josh to SF moves him to the perimeter on defense. Who wants him away from the basket when the pg blows by Bibby?

@doc Tracy mcgrady would have perfect for that spot also. Veteran guy with something to prove. But all along i think this franchise has tried to protect the mistake of drafting marvin where they did. So they will never bring insomeone who could possibly challenge him. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and move on. We forgive you for drafting him but why resign him? And then they act like he is wanted and you could n’t trade marvin for a team mascot right now.

Let’s see how bad the clippers want to Baron Davis? I wonder could LD revive hihs career right now.
Let’s trade garbage for garbage with them.

dukester,

I suggested TMac over the offseason for 2 reasons. First, he could play some SF if needed, and who knows, maybe we catch some lightning in a bottle.

And secondly, from a marketing perspective, the guy was almost voted to the all-star game last year. I think he still has some fans out there, and the Hawks would have been able to sell some TMac Hawks jersey, plus there might be even be more fans coming to the game (even if its the young ones).

Doc,

I think Sy also played some PG, so maybe LD sees him a potential guard combo next year, assuming Jamal leaves.

This off-season, we talked about Rodney Carney, Matt Barnes, Damien Wilkins etc. All guys who could fill the backup SF position, but for whatever reason, they have decided Mo is their backup SF.

Still don’t like Mo as a SF, he’s a SG. Pape Sy is a project people. They’re hoping he’ll give us length and D at PG/SG and maybe some day SF. We all discussed that he might make the D-League interesting this year at best. Quit trying to make him an All-Star who’s holding us back. LD wanted him, give the guy what he wants and see what he can do with it. The real question is are we going to actually use Etan and Collins?

Collins has gotten sparse minutes thus far and Etan hasn’t seen any action. If they’re signed to help us go big, why not have them seasoned and ready for ORL on Monday? Why not use them last night when it was obvious we were outmuscled on the boards? What did Etan think of that? Could he have outworked DET for those OFF boards?

We just haven’t seen it. LD had a big hand in choosing our pieces. He wanted Sy, he wanted Collins and Etan. Now we’ll have to see how he uses them. It’s too early to really judge. Give the man some time.

Beasley has always out-performed his season average when playing the Hawks, so I hope that he is out of the next game. More than likely, Johnson or Brewer will start at SF for the Wolves.

Pape Sy still hasn’t been cleared? I hope we kept the receipt for that imported purchase… it’s about time to send him back and get our money back. Who has the phone number for Trenton Hassell? Devean George? DerMarr Johnson (okay, that one was a joke).

I don’t like Josh, Al, and Zaza as our front court because Zaza does not play any type of defense at all, he offers absolutely no resistance at the rim. He got in KG’s face and people gave him a rep as a tough guy which he is not. He is really soft. We need to make a move. We still need to upgrade 3 positions. The PG, SF, and a bigger C.

Monroe’s entire weight landed on that knee. Marvin isn’t doing as good as he’s hoping IMHO. I hope he can bounce back, but won’t be surprised if it takes some time.

Truthsplitter – this is a great opportunity for LD to show us what he can do with what he asked for = Collins & Etan while fullfilling his promise to try Smoove at the 3 and Al at the 4 some. If that trial fails then yes we are needing a definite upgrade in all 3 places, but it’d take the $20-30 million that other teams spend to do it. ASG won’t do that. Drew better be careful.

I personally don’t want JJ logging 40+ minutes for the 4th consecutive game. And especially against these scrub teams. If he’s playing 40 minutes a night against these teams, I guess he’ll have to play 45 minutes a night in these games coming up vs Phoenix, Orlando, Utah, Milwaukee, and Boston.

Don’t burn the dude out unnecessarily in the 2nd week of the dang season. And don’t be playing Jamal if his toe is really hurt. I would much rather lose him for 1 game, instead of 3 weeks.

Coach, you’ve been talking a good game and doing some good things so far this year. So now it’s time to see how you handle adversity.

If the former coach could start scrubs like Cedric Bozeman, Royal Ivey, and semi-scrubs like Salim and Shelden when the injury bug hit us in the past, surely Drew can at least prepare Powell, Teague, and Jordan to play 20+ minutes tonight, to prevent Horford, Smith, and especially JJ from logging 40+ minutes tonight.

If JJ has to play 43 minutes in order to win a game vs the T-Wolves, Ima be pizzed.

Don’t be surprised if you are pizzed tomorrow night. The 5 teams the Hawks have beaten have a combined record of 5-17, but the Memphis game is the only game where the Hawks seemed to have it under control in the fourth quarter.

For some reason, so far this year, this team has played down to the level of the competition. So dont be surprised if it happens on Friday, especially now that Marvin and Mo Evans are probably out, and Jamal might be unable to go.

I like Al at center against most teams. But as much as ZaZa tries, we need a better defensive center to backup Al. ZaZa’s best defensive move is to foul you.
