Just four games into the season and there are some sure signs that Teague has graduated from Rook’ to rotation guy and the new Rook’, JC2, likely is going to have to go through much the same thing as Teague did last season.
First on Teague: Did you see how he checked in at Cleveland in the third quarter last just after the Cavs took their first lead since the first?
“I was kind of shocked, to be honest,” he said. “When I subbed in, we were up two. I thought he was going to pull me back and say, ‘Let Mike play,’ but he told me to go in. That made me want to go out there and play even harder knowing that he believed in me. I’m glad we came back and pulled out a victory.”
Teague almost immediately missed a bad jump but he stayed in the game. He missed two more jumpers near the end of the period yet no one went to the scorer’s table to replace him. Teague didn’t come out until 6:19 of the fourth quarter, by which time he’d contributed a block, steal and a couple free throws while playing good on-ball defense.
L.D. said leaving Teague out there is part of a long-term plan: “A big part of Jeff’s growth process is his ability how to play through those situations. In the past he probably was yanked out of the game when those situations come up. I told him and all our bench guys I expect them to play through those situations.”
JC2, it’s clear by now, isn’t going to see many of those kind of situations. The exceptions will be games like tonight, with Jamal sitting out with an injured toe.
I asked L.D. before the Cavs game if Jordan was still into it after going from playing big minutes in the preseason to spending most nights on the inactive list.
“I’ve got to keep him engaged,” Drew said. “He’s going through a situation a lot of rookies go through. He went from being the man in college to coming to this level and their roles change. He played a lot in preseason because a lot of guys were hurt. It’s a role that he’s going to have to accept and he just has to stay ready.
“There are no guarantees as far as what can happen, injuries can settle in [rotation] guys can get sick. He has to stay ready at all times. He is not going through anything that any other rookie has not gone through. It’s just a matter of being prepared, accepting his role and staying ready.”
J.J. said he’s not sure how JC2 is handling his circumstance but he’s tried to keep him up.
“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t tough [for Jordan] because it is,” he said. “But it is part of it. Once he pays his dues he is definitely going to be one of the good players in this league.”
Injury report
L.D. said Jamal suffered a turf toe injury when he was fouled last night.
L.D. thinks Teague hasn’t been as aggressive since injuring his ankle during the preseason. Teague said the ankle is affecting him “just a little bit.”
“It’s hard to go to the left sometimes,” he said. “Once I get to running, I am all right.”
Worst than the injury is the tape job Teague is forced to play with: “I hate ankle tape. I hate it.”
Out for the Pistons: Rip Hamilton (foot), Chris Wilcox (hamstring), Will Bynum (hamstring), Jonas Jerebko (Achilles) and Terrico White (foot).
Last time the Hawks played the Pistons in a situation like this, they lost 90-88 at The Palace (without Joe, but Detroit was missing Rip, Prince, Wilcox and Maxiell).
“These are games that historically not been good to us [against] teams with injuries,” L.D. said. “We have to come out and establish ourselves early.”

From previous blog,
I’m going to go ahead and predict that if JC2 has a standout game tonight scoring anywhere between 15-20 pts, there will be a fury of trade speculations and ideas regarding JC1. Hope ESPN got their trade machine ready…it will most definitely be in use tonight. Lol!!!!!!

2 Things, no, 3 things.
1) We get to see Teague run the offense without giving it up to Jamal everytime.
2) We get to see what JC1 can do when it matters most.

3) Why is everyone in the national media trying to talk the Hawks into trading there players away Lol. Smooth for RIP?!? Really? Smh @ the national media.

The Hawks need to make an effort to work the ball inside more tonight. Especially when the Pistons have Monroe in at center. They have no one outside of Wallace who can guard Al on the block, and when Daye is at PF, the Hawks should give Josh some more post-ups as well. Al only has 4 field goal attempts tonight. He should have way more than that, when you consider detroit’s weak interior defense outside of Wallace.

Being without Jamal and Mo is no excuse. We have a much better team than they do.
They played last night, and they are playing on the road tonight.
Last year, under Woody, the hawks had about 16 games where they scored 19 points or less in the fourth quarter.
So far this fourth quarter, the hawks have scored 6 points in the fourth quarter.
Just when you want to buy into the Hawks, they put up a clunker like this.

Couldn’t agree with your post more. We can’t lay blame on not having our 6th man. Where is Joe??? Highest paid player in the league only scoring 8 points?? Can we lay part of the blame on that maybe?
We could very well still win this game, but when you’re beating taken to the wire at home by a team like the Pistons, it’s hard not to believe this team is just going to give us another “right in, right out of the playoffs” performance.

I’m surprised to see Bibby play 33 minutes, considering he was 0-3 from behind the arc, and only had 5 points, 4 assists.
Compared to teague who had 7 points, 2 assists in 11 minutes.
That being said, game ball goes to Josh. he was even making jumpers. Marvin also had another good game. 11 points, 8 rebounds.

This may not have been the prettiest win, but the team continues to show maturity with a big turnaround in the fourth quarter. They went from being down by 5 midway in the fourth to winning by 9. On a night where Jamal Crawford was out, and Joe couldn’t throw it into the ocean for most of the game, that’s pretty impressive for the Hawks, even if it was against a struggling pistons team.

Oh well a win is a win I guess but Joe continues to shoot bad and Smoove continues to shoot too many jumpers. Al really did not play well tonight and ended up with 18 pts and 8 rebs but he has to do a better job on the boards. The bench was subpar tonight without Jamal. I hope Marvin is not hurt because I do not like Zaza playing too much. His lack of defense is just depressing. 5-0 nonetheless, I will take it.

O’Brien, on your comment about Bibby playing heavy minutes tonight, that was probably because he was the best remaining option for LD to go with, considering the depleted roster. Good win although it was ugly…This is why we should have signed a backup sf this past summer. Some guys are hurt and we are thin at that position. Josh Powell has Sheldon Williams type hands. This dude fumbles a lot of great passes and he shoots way too many jumpers.. It was ugly but a win is a win. Good to see Teague attack the basket the way he did and play solid d.

Obrien,
Are we still on the Teague should get more minutes theme. It’s Woody’s fault I guess. Hawks must have the sympathy of the scheduling Gods. Six scrubbs in a row to start the season. The real season starts next week. We shall see if LD and the Hawks are ready to move among the elite.

Teague played 15 solid minutes today, attacking the basket and making things happen. He made 3 or 4 nice passes, finished strong on at least one layup in transition, and changed the pace defensively. Yes, he made a few mistakes, but those come with the territory for a young player. And as many of us have already said over and over again, those mistakes would be much more infrequent now if Woody had allowed him to work through them in his rookie season.

L.D. said leaving Teague out there is part of a long-term plan: “A big part of Jeff’s growth process is his ability how to play through those situations. In the past he probably was yanked out of the game when those situations come up. I told him and all our bench guys I expect them to play through those situations.”
Sounds like LD agrees with us too…

What does “long term plan” mean? He was in Woody’s “long term” plan too. Long term meaning when he showed he was ready which clearly he wasn’t. If he doesn’t get more than 15 minutes against 5 scrubbs, what makes you think he’ll get more against legit contenders.

Samuel,
Teague has not proved himself to be ready for the starting job. But at least LD is bringing him along the way he should have been brought along last year. And teague has played decent in his 10-15 minutes.
Guys,
Didn’t the Hawks start their fourth quarter run after Marvin got hurt? That’s when LD played Josh at the 3, al at PF, and Zaza at center. So that worked out well.
“I told Joe his offense will lead us some games, but his defense should be constant” LD.
I really like LD’’s press Conferences. He sounds like a good coach. Woody’ press conferences …not so much.

Quick thought on Zaza.
It seems like Zaza’s has really learned how to finish more under the rim. It seemed for all to long that Zaza would get great feeds from passes or would simply make moves inside to draw contact, but with no real intent of finishing. Up to this point this season, it seems he’s worked on his game around the basket – because he’s actually *trying* to make baskets as opposed to drawing contact, and the buckets around the rim are coming for him.

I wonder if JJ’s cold shooting has anything to do with
1) the hand injury that MC mentioned last week . . that JJ says isn’t going to get better.
and
2) the fact that JJ has played almost 130 minutes the past 3 games ( over 40 minutes a game in each of the last 3 games )
At least he’s playing D and racking up the assists while he’s struggling.
Great game by Smith tonight. It’s nice to see him get back on track offensively.
Horford was his usual solid self, and came up big in the 4th quarter.
Even Teague played well, despite a few tough turnovers.
Ugly win for the Hawks. But a win is a win. Way to take care of business down the stretch.
********
As for Jordan’s situation . . if Drew has no intentions to play that kid, unless it’s an emergency, the Hawks should just send him to the D-League, so that he can hone his in-game basketball skills. Once Evans comes back, he’ll never see the court again, unless it’s a blowout.

I, for one, am glad that someone else sees this truthspitter guy for the nit-picking complainer that he/she truly is. Most of the comments on this thread are so negative that I wonder how many are true fans. IF there were any real fans on this thread, they would know that the Hawks typically do not get up for games against weak teams, but step it up for the Lakers, the Celtics and teams like that. Orlando is the only team that I am afraid of whenever we play them. There are way too many good things to point out in this team’s 5-0 start, versus the deficiencies. I thought Zaza played a good game. Say what you want, but I would hate to see this team without him. It depends heavily on who we would have in his place, but that’s not our reality, so you can’t sell him short. That’s who we got and the one person I would take with me into any battle. Call him uncoordinated or nonathletic, but Zaza plays with heart. You can’t teach that. Smoove says he’s been working on his jumpers in the offseason. If that’s the case, then let him shoot. For all of those saying negative stuff about his perimeter game must not be seeing exactly what kind of player that this guy can eventually become. A sort of “can do everything on the court” kinda guy. The only thing left to develop would be his outside jump shooting. He makes passes, block shots; why can’t he do it all? @Najeh Davenpoop: Smoove dunked before this game, noticeably in the Grizzles game where I noticed that he has an 80’s Hawks logo tattooed on his inner left bicep. Anyway, we are winning the game against the teams that we are supposed to beat and what’s wrong with that? Some of you should never try to watch another Hawks game. Ever.
