Atlanta Hawks: Wizards at Hawks

There’s one topic that is always sure to prompt an eye roll from L.D.

“You just had to ask me, didn’t you?” he said.

Well, Smoove keeps taking long jump shots, he keeps missing them (2 for 11 from 16 to 23 feet) so, yes, the question still gets asked.

And L.D. keeps having the conversation with Josh where he tells him: Yes, I know your stroke looks better but you are a good post player so don’t settle for jumpshots, particuarly early in the shot clock.

“I told him I am going to stay on him about it,” L.D. said. “He can’t put himself in those type situations. He’s got to learn from it. The one thing I want him to do going into every game is I want him to establish himself inside first. He’s got the script flipped. I will continue to work with him on it.”

But how does L.D. reconcile his wish for Josh to stop taking jumpers with that 3-pointer he buried to help put away the Sixers last night?

“How can you? I’m going to be honest, I have no idea,” Drew said. “That was a huge shot that he hit because he had somebody running at him and he hesitated and he knocked it down. The basketball gods were with us.”

Mo better

Mo got his knee drained yesterday. An MRI was negative and he said he should be back in about a week. The knee bothered him a bit before the Memphis game but Mo decided to play and then take care of it after.

“It feels a lot better,” he said. “I had a lot of fluid in there. It’s from the irritation and grinding and stuff after the surgery.”

Wiz worries

Arenas is out for the Wiz but “that doesn’t mean they are going to be an easy team to beat,” L.D. said.

John Wall is in the house and he’s working on his jump shot, former AJC Hawks beat guy Michael Lee writes: “Dwight Howard mentioned that the scouting report on Wall is that he likes to go left and score in the paint, so the Magic devised a plan to push Wall to go the other way and dropped off him nearly every time he prepared to go left, forcing him to take a shot that Wall has practicing but has yet to get confidence in. ‘They were giving him the 15-footer,’ Coach Flip Saunders said of the Magic.

I looked on yahoo.com and the lowest opening Home game attendance was like 15,000. From the looks of all those empty seats on television there is no way the Hawks will have 15,000 people there. Maybe paid but 15,000 will not show up. That’s sad no matter how flawed they are they kinda deserve better

Let’s keep it rolling, Hawks. It’s time to start off the season at home with a bang and keep that undefeated streak alive!

I’m at the game. There are like 500 people here. Great idea to schedule this om the same day as UGA-UF…

Ken Strickland,

“I told him I am going to stay on him about it,” L.D. said. “He can’t put himself in those type situations. He’s got to learn from it. Now that LD has said he will stay on Josh about it, are u still okay with Josh taking them?

Najeh,

You’re going to have to make enough noise for 10,000 people.

The crowd is not that bad but there are way too many open seats I am wondering what the official attendance will be. Al and Josh both look like they can do whatever tonight. Other than that I am not sure

I have great seats to this game… great enough to see that even the people at the scorers table are more interested in UGA-UF than this game. They all have that game streaming on their laptops.

On the bright side, with so few people here and such good seats for me, Josh might actually be able to hear me screaming “DON’T SHOOT!” every time he gets the ball.

Najeh,

In OT, UGA throws an interception on the first possession. And now UF will attempt a FG for the win. In case you’re wondering.

Hawks not looking good so far. 3 turnovers in the first quarter already.

First time Hawks playing a team with a legit center this year, and it is clear Hawks overmatched at that position

Nah, truthspitter, the crowd really is that bad. Can’t be more than 10,000 here.

Powell with another turnover.

Can we trade marvin for Al Thornton? We had the same discussion last year (and everytime we play him).

Teague is quick though. 5 turnovers for the offense

It isn’t helping matters that the Hawks played an all around horrible first quarter, and the few fans who are here have mostly tuned out.

20Mil for Joe Johnson, and he cant make a jump shot. No center. No Point guard. Hawks are a great team

I’m still not seeing any attempt to execute the new offense, but the Hawks have at least stopped turning it over. The Wizards are bad enough that that’s enough for the Hawks to get back in the game.

Teague living in the lane but cant make a shot. Al Thorton dominating bigger guys. Its time for Josh to get back in and go to work on the defensive end

Props to LD for sticking with the bench.

What I dont understand, is except for Josh Powell, this is the same bench as last year.

So why is our bench so much more productive this year?

The bench is playing pretty well, but LD seems a bit over-cautious with fouls. This is the second time he has sat Al for the entire second quarter due to just 2 fouls. 2 fouls is not something to panic about in the first half. Three would make sense, but 2 is taking it a bit far. On the bright side, the bench is doing a good job of holding it down out there.

To be fair, ZaZa has been active, and even Collins has played well, so there is no need to bring Al back in as yet.

Lackluster first half, but it speaks to the talent disparity that the Hawks are actually on top. Andray Blatche has maybe the lowest basketball IQ of anyone in the league. And honestly I’m not that impressed with John Wall. Right now he’s just Teague with a jump shot. Not that Teague is bad, but you expect a little more out of the gate from a #1 pick. Maybe Flip Saunders’ offense is too complicated for a rookie, but I don’t really see him taking charge and trying to get his teammates involved.

It’s been impressive so far this season to see how productive the bench has been. This is a great sign, as it not only gives the coach confidence in using his bench at crucial times, but it also gives the starters rest when they need it. Our starters, overall, should be pretty fresh for the second half tonight.

Also, the crowd got much bigger after the UGA-UF game got over. I guess we know where all those people were. Still nowhere near where it should be for a home opener for a playoff team, but at least it is somewhat respectable.

OB,

Collins is still a top tier defensive center.

He moves well laterally (who would imagine), keeps his hands up and his chest glued to the man he is covering.

All extremely sound defensive principles.

Interesting that the Hawks are starting to figure out how to get back into games and maintain leads even when their shots are not falling. The Hawks are shooting the ball pretty bad, overall, tonight, yet they played pretty respectable defense for stretches in that second quarter to force some turnovers and get enough stops to make a comeback. It looks like our team really is maturing. My only complaints for tonight so far are the foul trouble and unforced turnovers from all of the illegal screens, along with the early lack of energy.

Najeh Davenpoop

Yeah, I’m not trying to say Wall is bad, just that he doesn’t have that natural point guard feel for the game that you see in the elite point guards like CP3 and Nash. If all he has to do is get his own shot, he can do that just fine.

TigerWoods
