So with three days until the deadline, what’s going to happen with Al’s contracts extension? It apparently epends on where you read it.
Last week, ESPN.com’s Marc Stein reported a deal was “probable” despite “persistent chatter in recent days that Horford and the Hawks have made little recent progress in negotiations.” I’m guessing the “persistent chatter” might have something to do with Horford himself saying a couple weeks ago there had been no movement. That really wasn’t such a big deal since there was plenty of time left for a deal (the bigger deal would have been if the sides weren’t talking) but for some reason that note caused a bit of a stir.
A few days ago NBA.com’s David Aldridge reported it was 50-50 the Hawks and Horford would reach an agreement. But yesterday CBSSports.com’s Ken Berger called the chances of a Horford extension “a long shot at best.”
Berger also reported “a person familiar with the discussions told CBSSports.com that talks are scheduled this week between Hawks management and Horford’s agent, Arn Tellem.” Well, I think Horford qualifies as a person familiar with the discussions, and he said the other day the Hawks and Tellem are meeting this weekend.
Anyway, Horford has said all along he’s not sure what’s going to happen but would like an extension. He reiterated that stance today.
“I am positive and hopeful that we can get something done,” he said. “I love being here and I hope that I can stay here for a long time.”
Agents squabble over Al
More recent “chatter” (indirectly) regarding Horford, though I’m not sure if it’s persistent: Sam Amick reports at FanHouse that agent Aaron Goodwin plans to file a complaint against Tellem.
Goodwin alleges Tellem (who also reps J.J.) poached Horford as a client just as Al was headed to possible negotiations on the extension. Goodwin told Amick there were some “improprieties” in how Tellem came to represent Horford but did not elaborate.
Horford said he terminated his contract with Goodin in May and hired Tellem in late June. The first he heard about Goodwin’s beef was through Amick’s story.
“I don’t understand what’s happening with that,” Horford said. “I talked to a few [agents] before I made the decision, so it wasn’t like I was for sure going with Arn. I haven’t talked to Aaron. We had a good relationship; I just made a business decision. So you can say I was caught off guard by this whole thing.”
Amick noted the Players Association has a code of ethics that addresses client poaching “but regulation has never been realistic because of the immense detective work that’s almost always necessary to come to an accurate ruling.” I don’t think this stuff rates with fans but obviously it’s a big deal among agents.
Mo adjustments
With Mo back in Atlanta tending to his surgically-repaired knee, L.D. basically has to find a backup for Marvin when he doesn’t have one.
“It puts us in a little bit of a dilemma,” L.D. said today. “We are probably going to have to play Joe more at three. Occasionally we are going to have to slide Josh down there. We can’t wear Marvin out at that spot. We will probably end up playing Joe more at three than anything else.”
Asked if all the shuffling might mean more time for JC2, L.D. said: “I’m not sure.”
Etan and Pape were the inactive guys at Memphis. Pape isn’t on the trip (and hasn’t practiced yet anyway) so Etan will dress out tonight.
Speaking of Etan, it’s worth checking out his blog post at HoopsHype.com. The Hawks knew they were getting an outspoken player when they signed him and this is the first taste of what that means.
Philly’s young guns
The Hawks might see Sixers youngsters Evan Turner and Jrue Holliday on the court together. The Philly Inquirer’s Mario Aguirre reports that tandem showed some promise in the fourth quarter against Miami Wednesday after Holliday struggled at the start.

I guess I’m not digressing after all:
“Speaking of Etan, it’s worth checking out his blog post at HoopsHype.com. The Hawks knew they were getting an outspoken player when they signed him and this is the first taste of what that means.”
From the previous blog:
Questions from Etan Thomas:
“Since living in Georgia this season I’ve probably seen more confederate flags than I had my entire life. Do people really still fly that symbol of slavery, evil and hate now in 2010?
Sad but true Etan, I’m told some Georgian embrace the confederate symbol as part of their heritage. Some southerners even claim that they see the flag as merely a symbol of southern culture without any political or racial connotation. Unfortunately, these folks have either been misguided or brain washed over the years. I suppose it’s a convenient way for making peace with a very sad period in our American history. But linking an evil supremacy ideology to an entire bloodline is a flat-out bone face lie and perhaps an insult to others who don’t believe in this cryptic form of hate. With that twisted logic, the Nazis’ flag, the swastika would represent the entire German heritage. The only groups that wear that symbol as a badge of honor these days are extremist groups such as the neo-Naz similar to our home grown kkk and their use of the confederate symbol. Yes, there is a difference between ideology and family heritage. By definition, an ideology is a set of ideas that constitutes one’s goals, expectations, and actions. So as an analogy, if my father or grandfather pursues a life of crime and prefers robbing banks and killing innocent people does not mean I automatically must do the same or condone his actions.
Sorry blog people, I digressed.

Oh wow…I starting to like this Etan guy…
4. With the NBA at one of its highest points ever, doing better worldwide than ever before and with the ability to tread water in the wake of the worse economic environment since the Depression, wouldn’t this be the absolute worst time for a lockout?
13. Why wasn’t Josh Smith an All-Star last year? And how is Joe Johnson still so underrated? Last season, he posted averages of 21, 5 and 5 on a team that won 53 games.
14. Why does the media keep trying to vilify Jamal Crawford for wanting an extension? Don’t they understand the nature of the business is to obtain job security? And where is it documented that he told the team “Pay me or trade me?” Or is that something they made up?
18. Are you officially old when you don’t know any of the slang that your teamates are using? Or you think how they dress looks absolutely horrible? (Skinny jeans will always be terrible to me). This happened to me a lot while playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder last year, but to my defense Oklahoma City was the youngest team in the League.
22. Why isn’t Dominique Wilkins (9-time All-Star) one of the Top 50 players?
25. Last summer, there was a huge controversy over the building of a mosque near Ground Zero. It was viewed by some as a “slap in the face”, “disrespectful” or “celebrating an atrocity.” But here in Georgia they have something called Stone Mountain where they actually have a light show and a big Confederacy party. Let me put this into perspective… Stone Mountain has three figures of the Confederate States carved there. People who were not only fighting for slavery but against everything that America has become today. Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. Now, Stone Mountain was where the second KKK was formed in 1915, according to Wikipedia. In fact, the Klan had perpetual rights to hold celebrations, lynchings, cross burnings and other sick common practices. Why isn’t there any uproar about this and why isn’t this viewed as “a slap in the face”, “disrespectful” or “celebrating an atrocity?”

Michael, thanks for posting Etan’s blog. I had never read it before. I like people who are not afraid to say/write the way they feel. Though, he really seems to like to cut on the state of Georgia (which really is not that hard).
I think the Hawks should move Joe to the 3, when needed. But, let Jordan Crawford get a little bit of time. I am really curious about that kid. Not sure what I think of him, yet.

Jordan is no mystery. The kid is a high volume shooter, heck he took a jump-shot
47 feet from the basket, to his credit there was 7 seconds on the shot clock when he began his drive. Maybe he need glasses and didn’t see there was 5 seconds left to shoot. He should have passed the ball maybe?
He did have 8 assists in one pre-season game, while playing some point.
Bottom line is he is a scorer not a shooter!

I really hope that the Hawks get Horford’s extension done by the end of this weekend. The team doesn’t need anymore drama, and having to worry about what would happen if Horford becomes a restricted free agent is an unnecessary discussion. The Hawks have no business gambling with a key piece of their team. This contract extension should have been taken care of immediately. We’re not talking about a role player hear, we’re talking about one of the team captains, and, arguably, the heart and soul of the team.

Philly is a different beast than Memphis. Rudy Gay, Sam Young, and Conley were basically the only attackers of the rim that Memphis had. Philly has a whole team of attackers of the rim. Iggy, Turner, Young, Holiday, Williams. Gonna be hard for Josh to protect the rim against the consistent onslaught considering Philly can’t shoot. This does not look good but that’s why you play the games.

Evans out means more minutes for Marvin. either that or the hawk may go small using the two Crawfords off the bench and putting JJ at the 3. Signing Al will be big for the Hawks, but he is not a Center. He`s better suited at the PF spot with Josh Smith at the 3.

“I’ll call him, wish him happy Father’s Day,” Henry said. “He’s a father now too. And I’ll get a call from him, sometimes the day before if he is traveling. That’s usually how it is.”
Mike agreed that Father’s Day is different now that he acknowledges he has one.

Mark Jackson would post up every guard in the league for 24 minutes every time down the floor, til the league made the “Mark Jackson Rule”:
24 second shot clock!
But that dude, would run every team play with his back to the basket in the post.
LOL! He is a “worser” commentator than Nique’ by far!
But, some timely Iso’s are fantastic! That’s how we swept the Celtics last year. They couldn’t stop Joe and Jamal!
So, don’t get it twisted, IMHO

Drmary, I agree its a great play. And it is a very effective play. At the same time, it shouldn’t be the primary play that you run.
Does anyone else look at Durant (a player’s game I love) and wonder if he is better than what McGrady was before the injuries piled up? Before McGrady started having back problems, there wasn’t a way he couldn’t score. He could beat you off the dribble, post up, and his shooting was automatic.

Sautee, starting from when he signed with Orlando, they’re shooting percentage is very similar. McGrady normally had more attempts because he didn’t as much offensive talents (Grant couldn’t get off trainer’s table) than Durant has had. But its very close. And McGrady drew more fouls.

Co-sign. Drew has been nothing short of impressive so far, and he projected an image in that post game interview of a man who is calm, collected, and on top of every aspect of coaching this team.
As for the team itself, I still haven’t seen them play a playoff team so I’m not 100% willing to jump on the Ken Strickland Optimism Bandwagon yet. With that said, although I only saw the last five minutes of this game, I was very impressed both with what I saw and what was on the box score. The Hawks excelled at every aspect of the game other than protecting the ball, and it’s reasonable to believe that ball security will improve as the team gets more experienced at running the offense.
And whaddya know, maybe Smoove can be a viable outside shooter after all. Say what you want about that guy, but the results say he improves on his game every season, and you can see that his all around offensive game has taken a step forward again this year.

finally, joe talks like a leader and takes personal accountability when things dont go well. love it.

@truthspitter – That’s why I posted the following earlier.
“I agree that the confederate flag has a racial connotation. It has no place in our society as it only serves to divide.
I say that to point out, however, that Etan’s blog has a comments section. Responses to his blog belong there rather than on this blog; except where he comments on basketball.”

Grizz beat the Mavs tonight, which gives our blowout against them more credability lol.

good point Hmmm. flying under the radar is cool – but its getting old. But the 2nd round debacle put us firmly back under radar, lol – so it is what it is.

I saw some on the blog dissing Marvin tonight for missing some wide open 3’s. Does everyone realize that Kapono, the Sixers starting SF had NO POINTS tonight. The NBA.com game recap said Kapono struggled even to get open looks.

good game,a win on the road, i just love ld feel that he knows the game & our team. we looked good jj tried to take over the game in the last quarter which is the last thing this team needs. josh played great even tho there was quite a few times i was cursing him. this team is so much more fun to watch when they arent playing iso ball

Good thing Etan plays for the Hawks. If he played for the Braves or Falcons because he would have been gone already. MC might not have done him any favors by directing fans to his blog even though it was some interesting reading.
Go Hawks!!
