Horford trying to become third Class of '07 draft pick to secure extension.
One thing I’ve noticed about Al Horford when talking to him about his contract extension is he really doesn’t seem to get caught up in the particulars of agent Arn Tellem’s negotiations with the Hawks. That hasn’t changed now that there’s just one week left for an agreement to be reached.
Horford said the Hawks told Tellem they want to wait until the end of the week to meet about the extension. If no deal is reached by the end of business next Monday, then Horford would become a restricted free agent next summer once the Hawks extended him a qualifying offer by June 30.
“I kind of have thought this all along, but I think it really is going to come down to the last day,” Horford said.
Only two 2007 draftees have secured extensions so far: No. 2 overall pick Kevin Durant received a five-year, $85 million deal from Oklahoma City and Horford’s former Florida teammate and friend Joakim Noah, the No. 9 pick, got five years and $60 million plus incentives from the Bulls.
The actual value of extensions could change once the next CBA sets the new rules for contracts. Under the current labor deal, the Hawks can offer Horford an extension of up to five years and $82 million.
Meanwhile Horford, the No. 3 pick in the 2007 draft, said he’s not nervous or anxious about the approaching deadline.
“All I can focus on is playing,” he said. “Obviously, I hope we get it done. I can’t control that. They [the Hawks] want to wait until then, so that’s what we are going to wait until.
“I have always been that way when it is something outside of my reach, and I can’t do anything about it. All I can do is just keep going. I have always been like that with all aspects of my life. I just kind of leave it up to my agent and hopefully they can handle it. It is my business, but it’s not like I can make something happen.”
The advantage for Horford in securing an extension is that he wouldn’t be a free agent during what could be a lockout summer. Though the new CBA likely would affect the terms of his extension, at least he’d have a deal in hand once the season resumed. Otherwise, his options would be to play for Atlanta’s one year qualifying offer, sign an offer sheet with another team or negotiate an extension with the Hawks.
Horford said his representatives discussed the potential ramifications of the new CBA in regards to his situation. But that’s another thing he said he doesn’t worry about.
“I hope we can get it done,” he said. “I think that is the feel. I hope we can come to an agreement and when it comes to that point, it comes. I can’t get caught up in that. I really can’t. I think that is a natural thing for players to look ahead and freak out. But I can’t control it.”
Injury report
Pape Sy worked out on the court following practice. It’s the first time he’s been able to do so successfully since the start of training camp. He said he aborted an earlier attempt because his back was too sore.
Sy looked to be moving pretty well while shooting jump shots and playing some defense.
“It is starting to get better,” he said. “I can’t wait [to play]. It is a little bit [sore] but I try to play with it and come back as fast as possible.”
L.D. said Bibby (back) is not yet up to speed. He also thinks Teague’s sore ankle has prevented him from being aggressive since his return.
Jamal’s back tightened up so he didn’t participate fully in practice today.
“I’m trying to get my timing back,” he said. “I just need to get my health right.”

The problem with the Hawks is you brought a mastermind of a Head coach with an excellent offesive system and defensive principles.
However the have failed to give LD the players neccessary to make a real impact this year.
Remember Rick Sund set the that Seattle franchise up for consistent 2nd round playoff exits when he signed Ray Allen & R. Lewis to big deals. Looks like the same situation here.

PF’s equal or greater than Al and Josh:
Amare
Boozer
David West
Lamarcus Aldridge
Blake Griffin
Kevin Garnett
Pau Gasol
Nowizki
Bosh
Duncan
Randolph
Al Jefferson
David Lee
Scola
Kevin Love
And then there are bench stretch 4 guys like Antawn, Odom, Haslem, Taj Gibson, Rasheed in his later years, Hakim Warrick, etc
All of these guys have superior all around games.
Aint that hard to be an above average 4 in the NBA currently.

Ramon,
The key to me will be when Josh takes a bad shot. If the shot clock is winding down, I can understand. But if we are down by 1, with plenty of time left on the shot clock, I will be very disappointed if he shoots it. We’ll see how the season goes.
As for the all star game, I think Josh will have a hard time getting in now too. The East now has Bosh, Amare, Boozer, and KG at the 4.
To me, Al is a good cornerback whose best move is to knock the ball down, resulting in an incomplete pass. Josh, on the other hand, is a decent corner, but a great safety. He can knock the ball away, but he also roams and great at geting interceptions

O’brien, I agree. Josh taking that shot was stupid, I totally agree. It just seems if Josh makes 5 great plays, 10 good plays, and 1 stupid play. This blog concentrates on the 1 stupid play more than anything. And try to point to one play as to the reason they lost the game. Rather in baseball, football or basketball, one play doesn’t cost anyone the entire game.
Also, while the east have those PF’s now. Boozer will miss a lot of time. And you can make a good argument that Josh is in the top 6 forwards in the league. Remember for the All Star they just select forwards, not pf or sf. Also, I don’t see the coaches inviting KG over Smoove this year. Not if Smoove comes out with 17/8/5/2/2.

“Drmary, you think the Hawks were able to take Boston to 7 games, when Boston were clearly better than they are now. But a better Hawks team (now) wouldn’t be able to beat a Boston team that is worse now? I don’t understand the logic in that, to be honest.”
Because the Hawks are not a good road team, we lost the series. Also, Rondo was still wearing pull-ups in 2008. Bottom line is, Boston is a better team as was displayed against Orlando’s team. Boston, would have demolished our lunch had we played them last season and you know it too.
The Play-Offs is another whole level of play. Don’t let the 4 game regular season sweep get you twisted. We need some more size in the paint to become any type on contender in the East. So does Miami! I’m not totally sold on Miami either, their post game and bench is much worse than the Hawks.
Their perimeter players may work miracles, but I’m not impressed with Bosh either.
We can forget about all the other teams! My point is, what are the Hawks capable of winning as currently constructed. No – IFS, ANDS or BUTS – please!
Who do you see us man-handling on paper or in games for that matter?
I don’t want to hear about injuries please.

Watching the Horford extension unfold reminds me that Joe Johnson is not a leader. The same way he hogs the ball is how he has hogged all of the money from ASG, limiting them in their ability to field a championship competitive team.
What is the difference between $120mil or 108mil? Joe could have left some money on the table for Al, Crawford, and possibly Shaq.

@ Michael Cunningham…
With the meltdown that took place at the CBA talks, what are the rumblings coming out of the players about the request for partial revocations of the existing salaries put on the table by management? Also, what effect is this having on the Horford talks? And is this the primary reason Jamal Crawford has no shot at getting even an early offer?

The thing about Josh is he refuses to use his talents. He could drive to the hole and smash it, but he wants to take ugly jumpers. When the clock is winding down Josh or Zaza are the last players I want to shoot the ball.

@lewis I beg to differ sir. This is your list of players equal or better than Josh and AL
PF’s equal or greater than Al and Josh:
Amare — better scorer but thats about it.
Boozer — I will take Josh more atheletic josh can do more. Boozer isnt averaging 25 pts a game m
David West — pipe down cha cha you dont believe that.
Lamarcus Aldridge — great scoring skills very atheletic. Not the defense Josh brings but gets a thumbs up.
Blake Griffin —- You dont what he can do scratch him.
Kevin Garnett — true leader smarter and more savy than Josh but at his age right now I will take Josh.
Pau Gasol— True champion him and nowitzki they have the edge.
Nowizki
Bosh– I saw Josh tear Bosh up several times here and Toronto. Bosh is very good but edge goes to Josh for defense and atheleticsm.
Duncan—- same as Garnett
Randolph– Josh gives him the fits. he dont want none. Its reason Memphis wants to move him.
Al Jefferson– he is a beast but i will take Josh
David Lee
Scola———-Not sure why these 3 are even on this list. LOL

GeeMack, your 1:06 post doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Drew has been with these players for 6 years. If Sund wanted to blow up the team and start from scratch, then why hire an internal candidate whose primary advantage over a guy like Dwayne Casey was his knowledge of the players? There remains a belief that the players are fine and the previous coach was the problem. Thus, nothing changed with the “sacred core” and Drew (presumably) told the owners that he could do better with the cards dealt. Now is his chance to do better. There should be no excuses regarding the cards that he holds.

Co-sign your 12:50 post. Josh is an eye magnet…
Nire,
Looking at those lineups. Those stats may be a little misleading if you consider when those lineups are playing. My assumption is that some of the most effective lineups may have been against the opposing teams subs and/or mixed with starters and vice verse for the most frequent lines are probably against the opposing teams starters….

Josh has alaways been a spark for criticism. I appreciate his effort, I know he really wants to win, and I think money wise, we have him for a good price.
My one question would be, its been 6 years, so why does he always have to have that 1 stupid play?

yodaddy, as a true center, I’ll give you all those, not counting Shaq (just a shadow of his former self, at best). Lopez is one of my favorite players. So is Bogut, just because he is a tough guy.
But, as far as who I would want on my team….I know I don’t want Shaq. If I had to pick one out of Horford, Lopez, Bogut, Stoudemire it would be tough. I would need sometime to think about that.
My knee jerk list (who I would take, not just because they are a center) out of the four:
1. Bogut
2. Horford
3. Lopez
4. Stoudemire (if he could stay healthy I would put him at #1)

OB,
Keep in mind what is consider a stupid play for Josh. If he shoots a jumper with more 5 seconds on the clock, it will be label as a stupid play for him but not for another player. Any player who plays as many mins as Josh, it will be unrealistic to expect him to drive the ball to the rim everytime he touches it. It doesnt matter how bad of outsider he may be. There will be times in the course fo the game when he will have to attempt those shots. Ala, Marcus Camby, Kenyon Martin and other bad outsider shooters that plays a ton of mins…

O’Brien, because all players have that one stupid play. When Joe shoots over a triple team, that’s that one stupid play. When Horford fails to help out on the penetrate PG coming right down the lane, that’s that one stupid play. Bibby and Marvin, I don’t think I need to comment on them. And Crawford, his shot selection is iffy on a good day. I don’t think Josh takes a shot that he thinks he can’t make and hasn’t made. It just seems its acceptable for everyone to have bad games, or not to hustle on every single play. But when Josh does it, trade scenarios come out of every corner.
For instance, the Charlotte game is a prime example. Everyone saying Al should go demand everyone hustle every game. But Al was out there not hustling, just like the rest of the team. And Al wasn’t providing much of a good defensive stance at the rim. So how should Al go check the team, when he fell short. I think Josh can approve in a lot of ways. Horford forces way too many shots at times. And majority of them come on the low block when he’s outmatched or not quick enough to beat his man. But no one ever says that he took a bad shot, no matter how off balance and uncoordinated the shot looks.
But right now, he is the team’s MVP. And anyone who knows about the transitions of momentum and having a stamp put on a game knows that. Last season, the Hawks improved in record and standing. Yet Joe’s numbers decreased, and Al’s numbers have been pretty stagnant since he’s come in the league (12pts 9.5 reb a game). Marvin and Bibby’s numbers both declined in comparison to the previous season. Jamal had good numbers, but really weren’t that much more different than what Flip did the season before. Josh raised his game to snubbed All Star level, 2nd in DPOY, and the best defensive power forward in the league. While slashing his assist to turnover ratio. And despite the jumpers, still managed to shoot over 50% for the season.

Obrien
A: immaturity.
Josh is my favorite player to watch on our team, he makes me jump out of my shoes, on the fast breaks and the blocks. Josh does soo many things well and sometimes he goes overboard, with trying to do too much.
That’s when the over zealous play happens. Sometimes, this hurts the team and costs games. Like Obrien said, It’s been 6 years, so why are we still discussing Josh’s Jumpers. He needs to work on that in the off – season and not during costly games and play-offs!
He actually refrained from taking that ill-advised shot last year and then reverted back to it against the Magic – of all teams! The Magic? Wow!

I personally think the move the hawks can & should make but won’t. Though it will save this franchise, bring in a championship buzz for the next couple of years, and make us a title contending team. I would trade Al, two first round picks, mo evans, and possibly bibby or second round pick for melo and birdman .Then sign dampier. Melo a do the deal for it would be the best team he’s ever been on, he’ll get his money before the new collective agreement& and his wife can persue her music in the music capital. We won’t have to over pay the 7th best pf to play like the 6th best center. And our bench a be legit wit bird, jamal, marv,z,jc2& bibby. It’s there for the taking denver wants a good big.
IWe match up well with everyteam but Orl . Thats’s because not only can’t Al put any pressure on Howard offensively, hell he get’s desroyed defensively, couple that with bibby getting torched by jameer on both ends and you have a recipe for disaster. But against the other teams I don’t see this as a problem cause perkins can’t score, and for some reason we always overcome rondos play, now with shaq coming it’s a problem. But miami i think we can beat them all season long cause bos can’t do squat wit josh, al’ can dominate there center, and teague and bibby are better than whatever they have at the point.I don’t fear utah east at all cause we sweep the real utah last year with josh and joe manhandling boozer and brewer, ditto for corey maggette, you guys gotta be kidding me,like wow I’ve always been scared of corey maggette.lol
Hawks a be fine without anymoves but this move right here,a make us legit title contenders.

there are only two maybe three legit players on that list i’ll take before josh. dirk, tim duncan just for the season not for ever(heck might not take tim for this season he on the decline bad),and gasol just cause of his length.
sometimes we get caught up in numbers though they don’t lie,and if josh was a number one option instead of being a number three option i bet he could easily hit 3 more shots a game which would raise his number’s to 24 points a game, alot of these guys you are comparing his numbers to are number one or two options for there teams.See how boozers numbers drop off cause he with rose and deng, see how boshes rapidly drop cause he with queen james and wade.

i like this set up,but with a legit chance to move up and get the third best sf in the game for the sixth best center in the conference, whp actually is the 8th or 9th best pf in the same conference is ludicrous.
you make this trade denver’s gonna bite, look at all the trash they’ve been offered for melo.you give them an allstar 2 first rounds and mo evans ,for birdman. this is more than the cavs got for bron and toronto got for bosh, but it instantly makes us title contenders, not a fourth or fifth seed like we are but TITLE CONTENDERS,pick up dampier for the two mill, then on the way when jc2 is doing his thing trade jamal for some insurance.

This teams needs top be balanced out. People thought Jimmy Johnson was crazy when he traded Herschel Walker for 5 Draft Picks! But The Cowboys went on to win multiple superbowls! What 3 or 4? Mike Ditka tried to duplicate that by trading 5 players for Ricky “Pot-Head” Williams. They tried to pull a Dennis Rodman, when Ricky posed in a Wedding Dress with Coach Ditka.
Unfortunately, Ricky Williams, had the Rapper Master – P, negotiate an awful performance loaded contract that almosþ bankrupted Ricky!

Dukester, it shows you how many excellent PFs that are in the game, yet you see a David Lee who never really got offers his last 2 years for what he does at this position….he is a guaranteed double/double guy.
But it is apparent that position is a plenty in this league.
Saying that, we just happen to have 2 PFs of near equal talent who have to be on the floor at the same time. Will either garnish a big offer from anyone? Your list just shows how many teams are set at PF and really don’t need a starter because we all know neither Smoove nor Al sees themselves as nothing but a starting PF.
I just think we have some good talent PF and SG, and the other 3 slots that are up for grabs around the league.
But I really like Scolia and only think he is getting better each year. I think he benefits from Yao this year and could make Houston the toughest opponent for the Lakers going forward.
Portland with Oden/Aldridge is also a good combo if you can get the C healthy.
And you comparison with Bosh/Smoove doesn’t seem to be seen your way by the league. Bosh is a repeat all-star, yet Smoove can’t even get to the game before Al does as a C. Kinda perplexing to me.
There just are so many quality PFs out there.

Anyone seeing the Rockets shocking the Lakers after their ring ceremony?

You’re too funny too! I love your passion and unbridled enthusiasm for what you believe. I can’t hound you like Sautee, I don’t have that much inner – dog! LOL!
But, I love your exuberant posts! And, all that really matters. It’s ok if we don’t always agree. I still got mad LOVE for you Ramon, Baby!
