Zaza was raving the other day about a saying he saw on Twitter:
“Better to have it well done than well said.”
What he means is it’s time for the Hawks to stop talking and start doing. There are just two exhibition games left, tonight vs. the D-Wade less Heat and tomorrow at Charlotte. The season starts Wednesday in Memphis.
Can the Hawks get it together by then?
“I am sure that is a question on everyone’s mind after seeing us play five games we have already played,” Zaza said. “I am sure nobody is happy who is cheering for the Hawks. It starts from us, the players, the coaching staff, the management–nobody is happy.”
Yes, there have been injuries. There’s a new coach. There’s a new offense. It will take time.
But now the Hawks are healthy, the season is approaching and there has to be some urgency.
“We haven’t had really had the chance to play together,” Teague said. “At the offensive end it is kind of stagnant. We are still trying to figure things out. Guys really don’t know it all the way. But we can always play defense, and that’s something we have been working on really hard these last couple practices. I think you will see a whole different side of us tonight.”
Heard that one before from the Hawks. In fact, they were saying pretty much the same thing before getting blown out (again) by the Magic Monday night. Well said but not well done.
Bibby made it a point to say he would take on the challenge of getting the offense going.
“Teams have been really coming hard at us,” Bibby said. “I think it starts with me. I put that on me as far as giving energy to the team and try to get us easy baskets instead of trying to set up in the halfcourt. I think the energy will be better tonight. I am going to start with me and try to get everybody easy baskets.”
That’s fine but L.D. is trying to make it about defense. He said the Hawks made some strides when they held Orlando to 44 points in the first half Monday. He noted it will take time to create a culture of all-out defense.
The Hawks are running out of time before the games start counting.
“I think that when Coach Drew came in, a lot of people talked about the offense but I think what he’s been harping is on defense,” Al said. “I think the only way that this team can amount to anything is if we can consistently bring it on the defensive end. And I know we’ve talked about this in the past but it has to happen in order for us to have any chance. That’s effort, playing hard, really getting after it hard consistently from everybody. Because if one guy breaks down it can throw the whole thing off.”

Rondo does not have a jump shot. For Teague to be our Rondo, the biggest thing is play really good defense, and know how to run the offense, and hustle. The consistent jump shot will be a bonus.

I can definitely see what MC means when he says the Hawks tend to settle into iso every now and then. At times they make a conscious effort to share the ball and get it inside — as they should have been doing for 6 years — but at other times they tend to settle in to standing around and watching someone go one-on-one. Again, the idea of the new offense is great, but the execution is still a work in progress.

The first unit is doing a much, much better job defensively than the second unit. Love the defensive energy to close the half. The new offense looks pretty promising, and at least the first unit seems to be able to make a mental commitment towards playing man to man defense. The execution leaves a lot to be desired on a lot of occasions, but at the very least I think this team is more likely to live up to its “Highlight Factory” nickname on a more regular basis.

I can see where the people who said earlier that Horford is better suited at center are coming from, and against most teams I agree that Horford is just fine at center. Against Orlando, obviously he struggles. But against Miami, while he would have no problem holding his own against Joel Anthony, I think the Hawks would be better off if he matched up at PF against Bosh. In my opinion, Horford has always handled Bosh on both ends of the floor whenever the two were matched up head to head (which wasn’t very often since Smoove usually drew the assignment). Smoove doesn’t have the physicality to really bother Bosh, but Horford does, and my recollection is that Bosh can’t take Horford’s physicality on either end. Against this team alone, I would like to see more Horford at PF, at least when Bosh is in the game.

MC makes a great point on Twitter — the Hawks have avoided their typical 3rd quarter meltdown, and I think a huge reason is that this offense regularly gets them good looks that they previously wouldn’t get. The new offense, if executed right, is going to have a stabilizing effect on this team. Maybe they won’t be able to beat better teams, but they can definitely be more consistent from night to night.

As much as I like Jamal’s energy and what he brings to the game, this is the preseason. Winning this game is secondary to getting an accurate evaluation of everyone on the team who has a chance to contribute — in particular, Jordan. Like I’ve been saying all offseason, the Jordan pick dictates that Jamal probably has to be moved at some point. I’d like to see Drew use the preseason as an opportunity to see how well Jordan can fill that Jamal role, so that they can make an accurate determination on how realistically they can move Jamal this season.

I think it’s gonna take some time before you see the true effect of his offensive system at work – but those last two plays on offense – particularly the first of the two – are just an example of what I’m happy to see. Last season, JJ would dribble, dribble, dribble till he got a bucket. JJ coming around sets himself up behind a pick – gets the ball on a feed and gets open for a spot-up jumper.
No dribbling required. Good easy look for your go-to-guy.

“Teague still doesn’t impress me much more than last year. He still can’t shoot and doesn’t look like a leader. Bibby definitely is still the better all around player.”
In this game, Bibby was better. Always nice to have a veteran insurance policy. Will Bibby play this well in a regular season game against Jameer Nelson or Rajon Rondo? Probably not. That’s where the Hawks will need Teague. And while Teague may not have scored much today, he knew where to get the ball to set up teammates with good looks.

Think about how tired other teams will be once the Hawks get used to running this offense. This will wear down teams if they stick with it.

I know it’s preseason, but excellent win. Very impressed with what I saw out of our Hawks tonight.
Instead of us fizzling out with Iso’s in the 4th, we see ball movement, solid defense & clutch shots. Solid win

Its nice to see Joe not have to work so hard for his points. He got easy and open shots without all the dribbling. If they execute this offense they will be fine. More importantly i liked what i saw from them defensively. My only complaint other than Pachulia is all the missed free throws. Cant miss that many free points.

Co-sign everyone pointing out how easy Joe’s buckets were in this game.
I don’t think this game sends a message to Miami or anyone else, but it is a big confidence builder for the Hawks. They have had an uneven preseason trying to learn how to execute new schemes on either end, but this game should at least tell them that if they buy into the system they are talented enough to hang with anyone. Preseason still doesn’t mean much, but I think it’s big for the Hawks’ mentality.

Not only that Ramon, they will talk about how Wade didnt play which a few have already done. I said in a post the other day, you cant have it both ways. The games cant count when the Hawks lose but only be preseason when they win.

Definitely felt like a regular season game, the intensity on defense & energy on offense out of the Hawks was excellent. Now if we can get ZaZa & some of our bench up to speed, we look like we can again be a force in the East

I like the professionalism from our bench’s side.
No one was laughing at the opponent.
I was disgusting to see The Magic Head Coach and every player to a man was clowning The Hawks in our House on Monday night.
It was not a good look on Nat’l. TV.
They weren’t laughing when The Celtics kicked their butts.
I don’t like the Magic players.
Nice to see LeBron sent packing for a change.
Bump D-Wade and his leg, We have problems of our own!
I see Bron still making Powder Kegs before games, that is so self serving and tired. I thought he would have left the shenanigans in Ohio.
What a hot dog! I don’t like hot dogs – literally. Never touched one, don’t know what’s in it?

@ bigdave, me too – all the doom in gloom on these blogs was demoralizing but I was impressed with the offense and overall defense tonight. They kicked it in gear tonight – now the task is keeping it in gear for the regular season.

Roe they have been trying to get Pachulia up to speed since last year. Dude is flat out terrible around the rim. He loves that weak pump fake and goes up soft and slow instead of going up with some authority. He blowed numerious beautiful passes last year and he blew a few this game.

I guess a beating can get you focused:
1) Much better energy on defensive and offensive
2) Great fight on a night when the shots aren’t falling
3) Much better trust in the offensive system
4) Bibby really brought his game!
Offensively Horford really couldn’t shoot, but the HAWKS will be a very good team when he starts knocking down the 18 footers. I think they got some confidence in the system and got assists in the 4th quarter. Orlando is a different beast all together, but at least this game really showed them what ball movement can do!
Samuel, I actually think Jeff played pretty well. He attacked the basket and made good decisions. The stats show he had 2 TO and 3 Assists, but I don’t remember the TOs. We will need him against most guards in this league and I thought he took some steps forward. Bibby’s a tough guy, but just can’t stay with the quicker guards. Teague is very athletic, but doesn’t have a great jumpshot. I think those guys can really help each other. Bibby can help Teague learn to be a better leader and Jeff can help Bibby get through the year with less wear and tear.
Nice game guys! Way to finish it off with 2 3s
GO HAWKS!

lol @ drmaryb, the term hotdog is a perverted slang word that has become a mainstay in the american english lexicon – what does a grown man look like putting a ‘hot dog’ to his face, ugh. I have trained my 3 year old son to call them franks and he calls them nothing but franks, lol.
I cannot stand hotdogging athletes, Barry Bonds to Deion – well maybe Deion gets a pass.
I like the fact the Hawks are getting NO RESPECT – gives us more reason to get out there and earn it!

Even though Wade was out and only a preseason game, The Hawks look like they match up decently with the Heat. Bosh is very overrated he reminds me of a better skilled version of Stacy Augmon.
Looking at the game it seems the Heat do not have great length and can be bullied on the boards. between wade james and bosh they will have to combine to have to score minimum 60-65 points between them for offense

People are talking about the offense, but the defense won this game for the Hawks. Miami shot 37% FG. When you can do that to your opponent, you’ll usually win the game.
Great game by JJ, even took up the challenge of guarding Lebron in the 4th. Bibby and Marvin playing a nice supporting role tonight.
Overall the play of the bench was poor, and we still need to know who we can roll with.
Offense looked good at times. Have no idea what was wrong with Horford’s shot for 3 quarters.
Grade – ( B ). . . . good job Hawks

ha..
we’ve seen hawks play solid defense and eventually shoot themselves out the game. settling for highly contested difficult jump shots while teammates grow bored and frustrated watching. there’s a big difference in plain missing shots, and missing open ones.
we all knew the defense could be solid minus the over compensating switching. excuse those of us who believe the offensive execution was a breath of fresh air.

The Hawks played very well relative to how they have played up until tonight. I think Reggie Miller was correct that there was a compelling intensity from both teams that made for a great game. Perhaps we’ll see the Hawks on national tv more often than is currently planned.
I know it is preseason, but I hope Coach Drew continues to find significant minutes for players # 8 and beyond.
Lastly, good to see the fans turn out for a preseason game and remain vocal and supportive throughout. Combined with the crowds that turned out for the Braves playoff games, I think fans did a great job of refuting the narrative that Atlanta fans are indifferent towards their pro teams.
Go Hawks!!

That was an exciting gm, especially for an exhibition gm. The motion OFF does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and that’s create ball and player movement, and open scoring opportunities. I have to give credit where credit is due, and MBibby deserves a great deal of credit for the excellent gm he played on both ends of the court.
Once everyone adjusts to the motion OFF, and we start playing DEF like we did in that 4th quarter, we’ll be a top 3 team in the East. We wore them down with our constant movement, pushing the ball and attacking the rim. Even when JJ and Jamal went ISO, they didn’t pound the ball or hesitate when attacking the basket. One of the reasons we prevailed in the 4h quarter is because the Heat made it easy on us defensively by doing exactly what we always did under Woodson, go strickly ISO, except with Lebron. He ended up going one on 5 and forcing up some wild shots in the end.
Man, I really like Haslem. Why did we let him go? The Hawks officially started preparing for the regular season tonight. LDrew already knows who his top 11 players will be: PG’s-JTeague/Bibby, SG’s-JJohnson/JaCrawford, SF’s-MWilliams/MEvans, PF-JSmith/JPowell, C’s-AHorford ZPachulia/JCollins.
The 12th spot will go to either JoCrawford, EThomas, or someone we pickup after teams make their final cuts.
Now that I’ve had my say, LET THE GLASS HALF EMPTY WHINERS, CRIERS AND COMPLAINERS HAVE THEIR SAY.

KenS, you deserve to get praise for your support. The first time this team has looked like a team.
They played well, and looked interested. Perhaps they knew it was time to get serious and get used to the rotation.
Bibby did what he had to do, as he still thinks he’s the starter. I personally like the Teague factor off the bench. That is a mismatch for any 2nd team, and he has that spark that gets the team moving.
These guys look like they enjoyed playing together tonight…I will give them their just due. They had no problems matching up with the current Heat roster. DWade might be too much to overcome however, but for now, the Hawks can see the work they have put in pay off.

Back from the game. Maybe there is some hope! Good outting. Now, I hope Coach Drew rests most of the guys tomorrow. Just get this Bobcat game over with and don’t have any injuries.
I am using this game as further vindication on my Chris Bosh take. He is not really that great. Clearly the weakest of the “Big 3″. He is also the worst investment of all the free agents this summer. I am betting the Heat will wish they would have taken a pass on Bosh by the end of the season. Josh Smith was clearly better than Bosh. Was not even close, really.
Not that anyone cares, but I’m calling a truce on my Joe Johnson bashing. I’ll stop. I don’t like him anywhere near as much as I did before he told me he could “care less” if I showed up at games. But, I was pulling for him tonight. Something about seeing the team I dislike the most come into Philips made me start pulling for Joe, again.
Good night!

It takes a really BIG man, with a BIG heart and strong CHARACTER to,
say what you did and call a truce on the Joe Johnson comments.
I for one appreciate all your wonderful and insightful posts and you seem to be a great Father as well. I have heard you mention taking your beautiful Son to the. Games on here. In the throws of a battle, people sometimes say things they don’t really mean. The best way to move on sometimes is to not keep bringing it up, just let it die – from the Athletes perspective, an apology would just give a whole new life and something else to talk about. It can actually make things worse – you know what I mean? I hope so.
But, I am happy that you enjoyed the game at the arena, and made it home safely. Glad you didn’t throw popcorn, we don’t need another Palace Brawl … LOL!
You are TRULY a real Hawks Fan!
