Is this the imagine Josh and the Hawks are trying to promote, “soft and sweet”?

JSS, on the contrary, Smoove was about the only Hawk who didn’t ‘punk out’ against Cleveland 2 seasons ago the Hawks were swept. He was actually the only Hawk who had a decent series. And it was his defense on KG that took the Hawks to 7 games against Boston. If any one looks at this comedy commercial and thinks about soft, then something is wrong. No one called the Chicago Bears soft when they were doing their dance all across MTV in the 80’s.

@ The Truth, you do realize many Kick Boxers and UFC fighters pamper themselves in spas and different type things right?

Nothing wrong with the spa, I go with my girl every now and then. Always walk out feeling like a million bucks. If you’re secure with your manhood and/or sexuality, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Ramon,

OK NOW we’re getting somewhere. According to my American Heritage Dictionary “states” the way YOU used it means: To set forth in words; declare

So did Horford actually “STATE” what you said he did? Did he declare it in those words? Because THAT is what YOU said. To “state” is to declare in words. And YOU put those words in Horford’s mouth, but he NEVER “stated” that.

That’s the crux of my beef with what you posted. It was a specious claim that you cannot back up EXCEPT by taking responsibility for paraphrasing.

Once again you can’t claim that Horford “STATED” anything except what he actually SAID, because THAT is the meaning of “STATED”.

Do you get it now?

Jerrywest,

Probably not, but man I’d hope so. The Magic are 19-0 in preseason games. Considering they already own us on the court, this won’t be easy.

Sautee, state also means – to say-. Don’t just post one definition when a word has over 15 definitions.

Horford has better fundamentals, better jumpshot, better handles. All the things that Josh excels at are team-ball related stats. I think Horford wins that one, but not by much. Smoove does catch people slipping with that crossover every now and again though.

Or what about 19. definition for state (as defined by dictionary.reference.com) 19. to articulate in words; utter …

Ramon

I don’t think Horford could stay in front of Smoove to be honest. And starting from the perimeter each time would leave Horford in a bad positions more times than not.

Ramon,

OK 19 different ways to say that if someone “states” something, then they actually had to say it, right?

And did you ever read where Horford actually “states (over and over) that he can’t win without playing the PF position, when he knows he’s not the best PF on the team?”

No you did NOT. He never STATED anything like that. YOU conflated his words.

And BTW, my dictionary had only those two meanings listed for “state” as a verb (your usage). I would have listed more if they were there.

Why are you running away from what you did?

i_am_soulstar

I think starting from the perimeter would leave Smoove in a bad position, especially since he’s less accurate from out there and Horford has great lateral movement.

Josh needs to chance his nickname to J-Slam. Maybe a commercial with that nickname would’ve shown him in a different light.

But with me having a background in advertising, I would bet that the commercial was either written by a female, or a gay/very metrosexual male. That commercial is full of feminine/metrosexual imagery.

- the extra smooth gel
- the shaving of his legs
- in the commercial the entire time in his bathrobe
- walking through a huge shoe closet admiring his sneakers

It’s cool to see him on a national commercial. But this is akin to the metrosexual photo shoot that Kobe did over the summer. The only thing “manly” about the commercial, were the clips of Smoove dunking over people.

These players need to be a little more cognizant of how people in the ad world protray them. But if Smoove is cool with the commercial, then oh well. Just don’t be surprised if some of the more creative fans around the league start clowning Smoove over that commercial.

Northcyde, in that case you could see why it would work. In most homes, women have more control what is bought because they tend to shop more (especially for the children-who are likely to be the ones wearing the shoes).

From this moment on, I’m calling Josh Smith, “J-Smash”. If that’s how an ad agency is going to protray an athlete being “Smooth”, then “J-Smoove” is dead to me. I want him to be more of a power player anyway . . . so Ima call him “Smash”.

Hawks’ fans are so insecure that a simple commercial makes them feel that our enforcer is taking a miss step by doing a highly comical stunt with that leg shaving stuff.

Please get a grip. If Smoove continues to swat shots and dunk on people he will not be perceived as soft.

That’s been doc’s preferred nickname for Josh for the last two years. I think he hopes that it it catches on, it’ll make Josh play with a different mindset. We wish. eh?

Complete BS Ramon.

A mother will buy her son the shoes that he wants, no matter how ugly she may think the shoe is. And that is one purchase that most mothers don’t do without their children, once they become cognizant of shoe styles. Heck, once they become teens, they’re making their own shoe purchases anyway.

I don’t know what demographic that ad was trying to target, but it definitely wasn’t females of sons who want to buy the shoe, nor was it the hardcore basketball fan. That ad was definitely written by someone who had no idea who Smoove ( uh, I mean “Smash” ) was.

They could’ve come up with any concept to show how “smooth” Josh was. As a Black man, when I think of “smooth”, I think of smooth personalities and/or singers.

They could’ve had him dressed as a 60’s style singer, that sings so smooth, women passes out as he sings to him.

They could’ve had him dancing all cool and smooth, like he was James Brown or somebody.

As a “brotha”, there are so many ways that I could’ve envisioned the “smooth” adjective being protrayed to fit Josh’s personality.

Instead, the ad agency took the most feminine way to protray that man, and probably framed it as a joke, so that “Smash” would be cool with it.

As that commercial makes its rounds, keep an eye on the youtube comments of it. Most of us will be biased, and support “Smash” regardless of what he does. But watch and see if people don’t or do start clowning him over this ad.

“As a Black man, when I think of “smooth”, I think of smooth personalities and/or singers. ”

As a non-black man, “smooth” can mean a lot of things to me, but it certainly doesn’t mean grown men shaving limbs.

northcyde, thanks for the cred man but i started pushing that moniker about 4 years ago … J SMASH. in fact i cant even bear to write the other one. sounds like he wants to be a black perry como saloon singer rather than a rugged power forward in the nba. welcome to the folks that want to give josh s credibility not that other trash name.

Well Doc, I’ll gladly give you the credit then. Add one more to the “Change your nickname to J-Smash” movement. I’ll never call him “Smoove” again, after that ad.

********

No doube Najeh. Sometimes differences races, ethnicities, even people who live up North compared to those of us who live down South, can see the same thing, but view it totally different.

But also, we can see the same thing, and be in full agreement about an opinion. “Smash” shaving his legs isn’t cute . . . at all.

The ad was trying to equate the qualities of the adiZero shoe being “light and fast”, with ways that Josh could make himself “light and fast”.

Shaving one’s legs is supposedly a way to make yourself faster. But I think that’s just an old track and field “urban legend”, with the track athletes only doing it to make themselves supposedly look good.

I’ve nevr seen any concrete evidence or study saying that shaving your legs makes you faster. Because if it did, you would also have to assume that all track athletes would shave their head bald, for less wind resistance.

So Josh’s ad right there is a failure from a writing standpoint.

I’m happy to see Josh get the exposure. The Adidas ad from a year ago, and the NBA 2K11 ads were great. But I have to give a thumbs down to this one.

I can see it now . . . we’re in Philly and Josh is at the FT line. Those idiots there will roll up their pant legs, and start acting like they’re shaving their legs, to distract “Smash” at the FT line.

northcyde just playing a bit. i just wish his handlers and the hawks pr had had more vision and come up with something less effeminate than that one. i guess they thought he was going to be more like nique than the bull he has become or needs to be if we are to be successful. we dont need him finessing anything.

i guess he didnt have the heavy beard to go the barbasol route to his face and the next best thing appropriate to shave on tv was his legs.

As a white man (whatever the **** that has to do with anything), I thought it was funny and didn’t see anything wrong with it, either. It was a play on a combo of his “Smooveness” and being “light and quick.” Very daper/”smoove”, not effeminate at all.
