The Grizz had a tough time handling Teague. (AP Photo)
– This game was tough to evaluate as a whole. L.D. had makeshift lineups out there for much of the night. Marvin was the only starter on the floor to finish regulation and no starters were in for the end of overtime.
– There were 70 personal fouls and 88 free throws. The game lasted 3 hours, 12 minutes. I doubt there were more than 4,000 fans in attendance.
– But the Hawks had their regulars in for much of the first half and looked pretty good overall. After lacking in flow early, the motion offense started to look like what I saw in practice. The Hawks had 15 assists on 19 first-half field goals.
– The halfcourt defense was solid. Lots of help and recover, very few automatic switches. The Grizzlies managed just 33 points in the first half.
– Then the wheels came off for the Hawks in the third quarter, when Memphis had a 17-0 run and scored 42 points. But even that outburst was less about lax halfcourt defense for the Hawks, and more about eight turnover leading to 17 points and 15 Grizzlies fastbreak points after they had zero in the first half.
– “It was a terrible third quarter,” Marvin said. “It was a terrible second half, really.”
– The game was tied 99-99 when JC2 rebounded Darrell Arthur’s miss with 9.9 seconds to go. He dribbled the ball slowly up the court as the Hawks bench and fans screamed at him to hurry.
– If Crawford thought at all about passing, it didn’t show: He pulled up for a long jumper that was short. Did he know he was going to shoot as soon as he got that rebound? “Yeah,” he said with a sheepish grin. “I thought it was good, but it didn’t drop.”
– I’ll say this about JC2: He never stops coming. That’s how he played during Summer League and it didn’t change in his first game sharing the floor with vets.
– He was just 5 of 15 from the field, though, and there were some bad shots in there. “I was disappointed in how I played,” Crawford said. “I really didn’t get in a rhythm. I didn’t get comfortable. I probably was thinking too much, too.”
– Sometimes his aggressiveness paid off. There was a third-quarter sequence in which he missed badly on a shot but then came back to score on a nice floater in the lane. In overtime, he jacked up an airball but later in the possession got a rebound and was fouled.
– Crawford’s approach isn’t such a big deal for an exhibition game, and obviously he won’t be taking big shots when the games count. But L.D. said: “I think I am going to have to settle him down just a little bit. He’s an aggressive kid, an attacker, and that is intriguing. But shot selection is important on this level. I don’t want to take away his aggressiveness but he’s got to be more selective.”
– Crawford’s teammates seemed cool with it. J.J. in particular was cheering him on. “I told him to keep shooting,” J.J. said. “You want a guy with that confidence. He’s got a lot of talent. I’m going to keep pushing him and encouraging him.”
– “That’s him,” Teague said. “That’s what he did in college and it’s why they drafted him. When I was out there with him I told him I was looking for him. You see his heart when he took the last shot.”
– Teague went hard to the basket while scoring 20 points and handing out seven assists. The offensive motion creates a lot of creases and he’s good at slipping into tight spaces. The Grizzlies had problems keeping him out of the lane. “Coach Drew pushed me all summer to be aggressive, and I tried to do what he told me,” he said.
– “I liked the aggressiveness of Jeff Teague,” L.D. said. “When you see him on the floor with his tremendous speed, he can make things happen.”
– Marvin looked confident while delivering 18 points and 10 boards. He made 6 of 7 free throws and was active on D. He said the new offense suits him: “I love it. I know where my shots are going to come from every night. That’s every player on this team.”
– Jason Collins made a pair of long jump shots. No, really, he did.
– I’m thinking Zaza is going to be an overlooked beneficiary of the new offense. He has good timing on cuts and knows how to play the angles. But it wasn’t pretty when he was forced to take a 3-pointer from the corner with time running out in overtime. “I pump fake but of course nobody is going to jump,” he said with a laugh.
– Smoove left the game after suffering a cut on his hand that required five stitches. J.J. took a shot to the hand but he said X-rays were negative.
– Jamal (back), Mo (knee) and Pape Sy (back) didn’t play.
– Acie Law scored 19 points for the Grizz, including 10 free throws. “I’ve always been a big fan of A.C.,” L.D. said. “We’ve always maintained contact. When I got the job, he was one of the first people to call and congratulate me.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

DUKESTER-are you really serious? First of all, it’s a know fact that Denver hasn’t been able to trade CAnthony because they’re asking to much for him. So why would you think Denver would be willing to accept Jamal Crawford in a trade when they already have JR Smith, a very productive version of Jamal, who cheaper by at least $4M? Secondly, why would they be willing to take Marvin, who’s under achieved and has no heart, according to you, in trade for a high scoring perennial All Star?
And do you really think they’d get excited over a couple of future 1st rd picks that will certainly fall in the lower third of the rd? Man, get real and start dealing with reality and let that fantasy crap go. THE ATLANTA HAWKS AREN’T INTERESTED IN TRADING FOR CANTHONY, AND THEY AREN’T GOING TO MAKE A PRETEND OFFER JUST TO SATISFY PEOPLE LIKE YOU, WHO ARE OBVIOUSLY DESPERATE FOR SOME KIND OF FANTASY FIX.
Unless a team is willing to blow the socks off Denver, and is willing to offer Camelo a max contract, he’s going to campaign to be traded close to his New York roots, which leaves the Knicks and Nets as his choices. And in case you didn’t notice, OFF wasn’t our biggest need last yr, DEF was. And as far as his DEF is concerned, let’s just say we don’t need another Bibby or Jamal at SF.
SAMUEL-I don’t know what to say about you and the serious MAN CRUSH you obviously have for Woodson. You act like he actually won COY honors and then got fired.

TRUTH-Thanks for the insightful recap. As I suspected, LDrew is using the preseason to get his players and team prepared for the regular season. He’ll likely use the regular season, especially the 2nd half, to prepare his team for the playoffs, especially his bench.
I believe he’ll get serious with his rotations when we approach the last couple of preseason gms, and we’ll get an idea of what this team can really do.

Vava74,
Just stating the facts. If the new and improved offense wasn’t able to make at least one highlight then obviously it wasn’t all that. I saw Teague going one on one and kicking out to Marvin or throwing it away. I saw Josh clumsily leading the fast break. I saw Memphis’ PGs blowing by our guards at will. Did see much ISO Joe though so I guess that was good. You say you were there so I trust you, “I guess”. We’ll see on the first televised game but from what I saw, it was the same team minus Crawford.
Ken, you man crush>mine. You act like LD has actually won a game in the NBA. LOL!!

26 turnovers is not good, preseason or not. Say what you will about simple ISO offense but one of the reasons why it’s used so much is the quickness and length of athletes these days. The more passing, the more opportunity for turnovers.

LD’s offense will obviously generate more TOs, much like a football team that passes the ball has more TOs than a running team. My concern is mostly with those TOs turning into fast break opps for the opposing team (which seemingly happened in the 3Q). But those are growing pains that hopefully will be worth it in the long-term. Until they work outthose wrinkles, I think we may see several 8-0 runs by the opposition.
The thing that will be inexcusable (IMO) is not making free throws. Seemingly, a motion offense will result in more FTAs as defenses are caught off-guard by back-door cuts and screens. If our guys are getting hacked, they HAVE to convert those FTAs. Only one game, but we saw some unfocused free throw shooting last year also… so this is not a one game trend. Drew seems to have hit on most of the finer details so far, so hopefully he will work this one as well.
Where were our “physical” bigs when Z-Bo got going in the second half? Inquiring minds would like to know.

At least one off a beautiful backdoor screen wouldn’t you think. Realistically, guys don’t get too excited about us running this thing that much. Maybe on occasion but make no mistake about it, the NBA is what it is and I don’t see a minimum wage 1st year coach doing that much to change it. Besides, our best offense is still ISO Joe, like it or not. He’s our best offensive player. We just got to get him to pass sooner. Thems the facts.
OK, all you arm chair coaches. Sign up for the league and test your skills against the best.

So far, the preseason has gone as practice reports have….a lot of talk about offense, and little defense.
Did the Hawks leave the starters in the locker room the entire 3rd quarter?
Now what team shouldn’t be able to hold onto a 21 point lead? Anyone?
Yes, the scoreboard wasn’t a factor tonight. Its practice. But the $$ gets exchanged, the players are getting paid, so the critics should critique.
JC2 – all about his shots, nothing about any other part of the game or team. I wait to hear more about his learning the NBA way.
Collins, our new off the bench points threat. Nice 3-3 in 6 min….guess not many rebounds to be had.
LD is 0-1 and he continues to try to find a place where 6M Bibby can help us. A little too late, like 2 years too late…..
Teague, one bad ankle and the excuses start coming out. I still want to see how his 3pt shot is coming along.
All in all, can’t wait for the open practice…..who’s running the 2nd team now that LD is in charge?
Marvin, no threat to losing any minutes…only Marvin shuts himself down.

Free throws cost us the game. We both shot 44. They made 40 (90.9%). We made 27 (61.4%).
When you shoot 51.9% from the field like the Hawks did, too the Griz’s 44.4%; outrebound them 39 to 35, you should win. Only had 3 more TO’s than they did, but again we lost because of FT shooting, really end of the story. I should have never made it into OT. They beat us by 4 in OT, but they had 13 more made FT’s in the same # of attempts. If we would have shot 72.7% at the line – we would have won by 5. 75%, we would have won by 6, even with them shooting 90.9% from the charity stripe. Fundamentals still matter. Mark Price, where are you?

“Powell….I’m thinking Northcyde or Najeh Davenport (I can’t remember who said it) might be right…Powell looked like a bit of a stiff.”
I didn’t have to say it — it’s right there on his stat sheet for everyone to see. He is a big man who shot 36% last year and 43% for his career, which is below average for a guard. His rebound rate was awful last year, and although his career rate is better, it’s not enough to make up for his abysmal offense. Basically, he’s a 6′9″ 240 pound Mario West in the best case scenario, and the Hawks are paying him more than twice as much as they would have been paying Dexter Pittman or Hassan Whiteside.

@KEN STRICKLAND Sir I have never played any fantasy league that exist in my life. So calm down with your tirade cha cha. Any fan of any NBA would love to have Carmelo Anthony on their team. If Iam not mistaking he is a top 2 SF in this league. So because you are content with this organization being stagnant and lethargic in their moves for trades and possible free agents don’t mean I should. I respect your opinion. Just disagree, And no I am not saying Denver would make the trade with only JC1 and Marvin and some picks. But at least throw your name in the hat!! you never know if a 3rd team would get involved.
And no I am not excited that we spent money to buyout a contract of no name guy that will at best get junk minutes in the 4th quarter. So you go right ahead and watch this team place 4- 6th seed and bow out in the 1st or 2nd round and be happy with that.

One should not expect a rash of TO’s in a motion offense.
Perhaps in the initiate stages.
But the more they get to know & understand one another
the TO’s will decrease.
That’s another plus for this bunch having been together
for so long, as the learnig curve for the *offense will
be shorter. *[the getting to know each other stage]
Once the guys understand where each player likes/wants
the ball & how he likes to receive it, etc.
Normally things of that nature are left up to the pg,
but when all are handling the ball then each has the
responsibilities of a pg. [mentally].
Which is why b-ball IQ is valued in this offense.
Still I contend that TO’s are not synonymous with motion
offenses.

Your making my point with this line thanks sir. Your are right we do need better defensive players sir. Now look at the roster who did we get to make this team a better defensive team. Yea thats right start with the center position!! We went out and got some “never has beens” that mean they were never any good and they are has beens at being no good. Geeessh I am really starting to see why Atlanta teams are always on the edge of winning and never in the lead dog position because they have silly fans like you who want even demand that the organization put all it has into winning! Besides Joe Johnson and the recent draftees this team has spent over 20 million in free agency on this list of players:
Marvin Williams
Mike Bibby
Zaza Puchulia
Pape Sy
Cheeseburger Collins
Josh Powell

“Any fan of any NBA would love to have Carmelo Anthony on their team”
That depends:
1. what do you want out of your [3]?
(a) defense = Battier or Artest
(b) 3 pt shooting = Paul Pierce
(c) leadership = Battier or Pierce or Grant Hill
(d) rebounding = Gerald Wallace
(e) a pt forward = Lamar Odom
(f) all ’round = Rudy Gay
(g) high volume shooter = Melo
*Guess what I still didn’t even mention the best two:

@dukester,
I agree with most of your points. I am convinced that Ken Strickland = Larry Drew. As much as I hate to say it, because I am Atlanta born and bred, Atlanta is the only city where players like Marvin Williams, Michael Jenkins, Jamal Anderson (d-line), and even the great Chipper Jones, can rob their organizations, and fans still support and make excuses for them. Fans here even have the nerve to say things like Cheeseburger Collins, and Josh Powell, are better options for the Hawks, because we are running a motion offense, than Shaq. Funny isn’t it.

dukester, the carmelo train left a long time ago in atl. The Hawks are committed to playing team basketball with a priority on defense. Carmelo does not fit into those plans. I, for one, would be greatly disappointed if the Hawks even made a serious inquiry for him. It would display shallow commitment on Drew’s part to his core principles. Furthermore, if Camelo was all that much of a game-changer he would have made a bigger difference with the Nuggets. But I understand your argument. You believe that the core of the Hawks is strong enough to make a strong push in the East, but Carmelo would put them over the top – even above the Heat. I agree with you, the Hawks do have a strong core to make a strong push in the East, but I believe team-basketball (on offense & defense) will make a bigger difference than any one player.

@Grandad,
Not defending dukester, but get real. Melo is a first option player. We don’t have a first option player. Joe would be an excellent second option, but he has proven that he is not a lead dog. Melo is the type of player that can do whatever he needs to do at a high level. He is required to be a high volume shooter on Denver’s team. No one on their team plays any defense, except maybe Kenyon Martin. I remeber when I was growing up, I would argue with cats about how good Dominique was, and they would always say, he shoots to much, he does not rebound….. We did not need him to crash the boards because we had Kevin Willis, Tree Rollins, Antoine Carr, Cliff Levingston…., and he shot so much because his coach told him to. When Melo played on that Olympic team, with all of the other players in the league, he was clearly one of the best all around players on the floor. Don’t let that Denver style of play fool you.

I do realize that we CAN NOT and WILL NOT go after Carmelo Anthony, but to make statements like this, make me question your basketball knowledge. Carmelo has not made a bigger difference with the Nuggets because they can’t get by the Lakers or the Spurs, which are both teams with better talent, and better coaching. In a 7 game series, 9 times out of 10 talent will always win out. Core principles, motion offenses and all that other crap is college stuff. Utah has been running motion offenses for years, and they can’t beat the Lakers or the Spurs because they do not have the quality depth or talent. These are professionals. So, with your thinking, Carmelo could not play better defense than Marvin? His offense alone would make him a better defensive player than Marvin, because his man would have to actually expend some energy on the defensive end of the floor.

As negative as I can be toward Marvin, it is not because he is not talented. It is because he is not rising to his potential. He has the ability to be a quality starter (never a superstar). And if Teague continues to develop, the Hawks starting five can play with any team.
That’s why I am such a fan of Coach Drew. He is addressing every area of weakness very capably. The fire power will come with the new identity.

Samuel (and everyone else in the Sekou’s Bloggers league) — would y’all be open to doing a live online auction draft instead of a regular draft? Yahoo has started offering that as an option. The big advantage to it is that you are not at the mercy of the draft order — anyone has a chance to get Durant or LeBron or CP3. It takes a little longer than a regular draft but as someone who has done auction drafts for fantasy football I can say for sure that it’s a much better format than a regular draft.

Do you understand how the salary cap works? Even if we hadn’t re-signed JJ, we couldn’t have made a legitimate offer for any of those guys. We would’ve had to trade away salaries to a team that had cap space, and our only really tradable salaries were Smoove and JC. Most teams that had cap space were trying to sign those guys. If you’re saying we shouldn’t have re-signed Marv, Bibby and Pachulia so we would’ve had cap space, I might agree, but this offseason, we had no shot at those guys.
