Atlanta Hawks: Camp report

Larry Drew has Hawks picking up the pace. (Hyosub Shin/hshin@ajc.com)

The Hawks scrimmaged live for the first time today and and us media types got to watch. It was different from when I watched L.D. and his staff run the motion offense against air last month, and I came away with three thoughts:

1. To keep this up, the Hawks are going to have to be in tremendous shape and L.D. is going to have to go deep into his bench.

2. The first time you see the Hawks run the offense it’s going to be a shock to your system because it’s such a radical departure from their norm.

3. Because of No. 2, it’s going to take some time for it to look the way L.D. wants.

“I think probably we will have it boiled down and going pretty good by the third preseason game,” J.J. said (that would be Oct. 12 at Washington. “Everyone is pretty much picking it up quickly but when game time comes it will be a little bit different.”

For the Hawks, learning the offense is just the first challenge and probably the easiest–these are pros, after all, and some of this stuff already was in the playbook. More difficult than digesting Xs and Os could be the mental adjustment to playing such a different style.

You could see this on the very first possession of the controlled scrimmage today. J.J. got the ball on the right wing and waited for someone to flash to his side. No one did, so he held the ball until jacking up a fadeaway jumper at the shot-clock buzzer. Another possession also ended in Iso-Joe.

It was as if the Hawks are so conditioned to throwing it to Joe and watching him work they don’t know any other way. Actually, it wasn’t “as if” that’s what happened–one player said that’s exactly what happened. Old habits are hard to break, I guess.

On another play, Smoove saw the backdoor open and tried to feed Joe with a bounce pass. But Joe reversed direction and Smoove’s pass sailed out of bounds. The offense is designed to get shots going to the basket or create open catch-and-shoot 15-footers but Atlanta’s guards are accustomed to working off the dribble far out on the perimeter.

There were some good things, too. Two or three times Marvin confidently came off hand-off screens and made jumpers. Zaza twice got to the basket on backdoor cuts and drew fouls. Smoove caught a backdoor oop from Teague.

“We saw a lot of good things out out of it but we got a little helter-skelter at times,” J.J. said. “But if you run it right, you definitely can get open shots out of it.”

L.D. plans to have all of the plays installed by the time camp wraps up Saturday.

“They kind of know the shell of it, we are just adding different options of it,” he said. “Some of this is going to be a learning experience, especially when they go against a defense. The tendency is to speed up and get out of control. But for the most part they executed pretty much the plays we’ve been working on these first five practices.”

And they were running

The morning practice sessions so far have all lasted at least 135 minutes and the Hawks have run, run and run some more. Near the end of today’s practice, they ran a series of “suicide” sprints” that increased in length each time through. For the final sprint, players ran the length of the court eight times.

Only, that wasn’t really the end. L.D. lined up each group and asked for one final suicide. If they did it in less than nine seconds, the running was over.

“I don’t think there will be a better-conditioned team out there,” Jamal said.

L.D. is asking a lot but so far he said he’s getting it.

“The type of juice they still have left in the tank tells tells me they are in pretty good shape,” he said. “I am pretty happy about that.”

It’s one thing to push guys like this during training camp but I’m not sure how that plays during the season. Already there has been a bit of grumbling among players but nothing too serious. That inevitably would change if it went on like this during the season, when long, frequent, intense practices can take their toll.

Is this something L.D. is doing only for training camp only or will it carry over into the season?

“A little bit of both,” he said. “Any time you come into training camp, for any new head coach, I think he has to set the tone. One, how his practices are going to be. Also, with it being training camp, you do want to get yourself established and get the team established with the mindset that you want going into the regular season.

“I told our guys from Day One, everything we do, we want to do with an aggression. We want to be the hunter, not the ‘huntee.’ Our mentality offensively and defensively is to attack. It all starts in training camp. We have to do it at the pace and the speed and [with] the type of energy we have put into it.”

‘Nine, 10 deep’

The other part of that equation is the Hawks will need a rotation deeper than eight to play this style. Jamal, Zaza, Mo and Teague are mainstays, and L.D. will probably need even more numbers.

“I am very confident with us being a team that can go nine, 10 deep,” he said. “We have some guys, you look at their minutes last season they didn’t play as many minutes as they would have liked. I am going to give those guys every opportunity to show me what they can do and play minutes where they can get into a rhythm.”

Getting familiar

L.D. said he will mix and match lineups during practice so all of his bench players can get comfortable playing with the starters. Today he had Teague running with Josh, Joe, Marvin and Zaza (Al sat out the second straight day with a left ankle injury he says isn’t serious).

“Last year he didn’t practice a lot with those guys on the same team,” Drew said. “I want him to get familiar and comfortable with those guys. That all starts in practice. You build that confidence and camaraderie in practice and it carries over into the games.”

Injury report

Mo (knee) and Pape (back) also sat out today. Mo hasn’t been cleared for contact work and Pape is resting with the hope that a break will alleviate the tightness.

Jamal’s back tightened up during practice but he finished.

@ Fundamentals: “MC – how do the Hawks feel about the snub Chris Webber and other analysts have been giving us lately. No playoffs, no chance, no good players? Shouldn’t that salt their wounds from last season and bring them out with more fire and determination? I personally thought it was short sighted and media hyped. We should have something to prove all season.”

they’ve talked a little bit about feeling overlooked. i will get into that at some point.

“Any chance of a video or photo of Collins and Etan working down low? The previous article discussed the bigs wanting a role at C w/ Al at PF? Will it happen? How often? Enought to keep them inspired?”

i’ve got a new phone that supposedly has a nice video cam but i have to figure out how to integrate the video into the blog. stay tuned.

as for their roles, way too soon to say. let’s at least see some exhibition games.

If ZaZa maintains focus and energy will LD have enough minutes for him? When inspired, he was the difference for us, when he’s in the doghouse we’re obviously lacking inside presence.

Can he headbutt Bosh this year in the playoffs? If so would he crumple up like a sissy, unlike KG.

Sy is going to need time. He won’t come close to being ready to be physical enough to hold up at SF this year reliably. I love the kid, but give him time to adjust physically before we decide on his ability?

D-League may be the only minutes JC2 and Sy see for real time this year? I’d hate to see them rot on the bench. They’re not in the top 10.

Anyone that thinks that when inspired Zaza was the difference does not know a single thing about basketball. Zaza and Marvin are quitters and whiners with female dog ways. They are cancers to this franchise and should be moved at any oppurtunity. A big head soft tough guy in Zaza and a lazy funny walking looking idiot in Marvin. They should both be traded ASAP

If anything, this may be a reason for the Hawks to send him down… if Jamal will be traded at the deadline and Jordan will have to take over, it’s better for Jordan to be playing meaningful minutes so that the Hawks won’t be throwing him in the fire with little to no game experience in February.

This is a dreaded behavior of JJ that concerns me the most:

“Smoove saw the backdoor open and tried to feed Joe with a bounce pass. But Joe reversed direction and Smoove’s pass sailed out of bounds.”

JJ tendency is to pull-up for the jumper, because that’s who he really is, a natural jump shooter. In this motion offense, JJ needs to be more of a slasher which he really isn’t. In this example, when JJ reversed direction, he most likely was thinking about getting to his sweet spot to launch his jumper. LD is really asking JJ to reprogram himself which will not be easy. But the question is not if this motion offense works for the Hawks, the question is when. Since JJ was the Epicenter of the Hawks offense for the last 5 years, asking the team to quickly make a 180 degree turn in a few weeks, maybe too much. If this thing doesn’t happen gradually it will mostly likely not happen at all.

Exactly Fundamentals: You are very petty and don’t understand the Fundamentals of basketball or this franchise if you think Marvin or Zaza should be mentioned in the long term views of this franchise when you say yourself that Zaza has female dog ways. How can you respect a man who may play hard demands on how he feels about playing time or the way people are treating him. He is a female dog. So is Marvin. They get paid regardless don’t forget that. If I were GM I would trade them along with Jamal and Mo. For teams looking to get Jamal and Mo’s expiring deals one of the stipulations would be that you have to be willing to take a contract along with them, and the contracts would be Marvin, Zaza, and Bibby in that order because Bibby only has 1 year after this year

Again, we are talking about a group of guys who have played a certain way the entire time they have been here. It won’t be so clear and concise for awhile. Expect turnover after turnover until the responsiblities get ironed out.
It all sounds good and optimism is at its peak. The season hasn’t started and the schedule favors a good start.
But it is still about Orlando, Miami, defense and rebounding.

This core had trouble beating LeBron without Wade and Wade without LeBron. I think the defense will determine their competitiveness.

I just looked at Celtic tickets in Nov. No way I am headed to Philips at $197/ticket to sit in the middle of Section 101. And that is a supposed corporate discount.
Is it me or is the ASG making sure increase their profits this year?

Everyone seems to think we’re going to rely exclusively on the motion OFF to score pts. LDrew has already stated we’ll still use the ISo approach if it’s the best way to exploit the DEF. Also, we’re still going to rely heavily on the fast break.

When we can’t run a successful fast break, or get an easy transition scoring opportunity, we’ll use our half court OFF. We’re not going to be a traditional team that relies heavily on its half court OFF to score, like the Celtics, Spurs, Magic and Pistons. The motion OFF will have its biggest impact at the start of gms and when closing out tight gms down the stretch.

Can you imagine the Celtics, with Shaq and JOneal, trying to keep up with what we’ll be doing? And how will the Bulls DEF, with DEF liabilities like KKorver, CBoozer and LDeng, be able to deal with our OFF? It’ll be very interesting to see how DHoward will provide the help DEF Orlando relies on, while constantly fighting over picks trying to keep up with AHorford. He’s already foul prone, and this will likely make him even more so against us.

Instead of providing help DEF, like they’ve both done so successfully in the past, both LeBron and Wade will have to dust off their weak man DEF skills against us and fight over picks. If you think all of this running will tax our players, imagine the affect it will have on the players trying to keep up with us on DEF. Just like we’ll have to go 9-12 deep into our rotation to keep our OFF and DEF going for 4 quarters, opposing teams will be forced to go just as deep into their rotation to keep up, or suffer the consequences of fatigue down the stretch.

What we see unfolding is exactly what I’ve been talking about, and why I feel we’ll finish as one of the top 2 seeds in the East.

The ASG is garbage. Where is that $3 million that they sold the 2nd round pick for? We will never see it as fans. It does not matter if the owners get a hard cap or not this organization is going to be garbage until we get new owners. The NHL has a hard cap and the ASG loses more money on the Thrashers than on the Hawks.

Will you also tell me why there seems to be absolutely no concern or apprehension whatsoever about Bull players buying into Thibodeau and his new style, OFF/DEF systems and approach?

And will you please explain why there is no concern whatsoever about DWade, CBosh and LJames adjusting to what, for them, will be a completely new style, approach, and way of playing?

Agreed they are pretty steep, but that’s because you are looking at the celtics game. They switched the prices to demand-based, so the best games are really expensive. There are some decent ones though. $18 for the thunder is fair to me (upper level though). At least its not as bad as concerts. That two headed best of the livenation-ticketmaster monopoly has concert tickets at $50 for general admission shows.

The only issue the Heat is going to have is who do they look to for in a tight game? My guess is any 3 of the 5 will work.

The Heat has fewer problems than LD has here. He has 3 Olympians that have played together and are used to doing what it takes to win. Not to mention they are multi-time all stars.

It really doesn’t bode well to compare the Heat to the Hawks.

Next time I see Elle at Compound, ima sop her up with a biscuit. So beautiful, and she likes sports.

As for the Camp Report, if what MC is true about the Hawks needing a deep rotation to run this type of offense, this is exactly what some of us have been talking about.

We’re going to need a fairly strong 2nd unit to be able to adequately give our starters rest ( like 6 – 8 minutes at a time type rest ). This means that the 2nd unit MUST learn how to play with each other . . ala what you see in Boston, Orlando and Phoenix.

If our bench is going to be Teague, Jamal, Mo, and Zaza . . along with ( insert starter ), then those 4 are going to have to develop some sort of offensive and defensive chemistry. Last year, the defensive chemistry was non-existant amongst this group.

That’s going to be Drew’s biggest challenge. Getting that 2nd unit to play defense.

Having said that, I like Drew’s attention to detail. But I would like to see him show that same attention to the defense, once the offense gets installed.

Now . . where Elle at? (( grabbing biscuit ))

I’m scared now.

I’ve been waiting all off-season for Sund to pull the trigger on some move that’s going to be meaningful for this team… and now, I’m quickly becoming persuaded his big move was to hire LD and run a different offense/defense.

As opposed to previous off-seaons when you could sit back a bit and be content in the knowledge that these guys were still maturing, and you could expect some internal growth… last season told us that there’s not a lot more of that to be had.

This team might very well compete with BOS and MIA, but there is no good reason right now to think ORL won’t totally befuddle this same team as they’ve always done. If you’re not going forward, you’re going backward. And Drew’s strategies may very well be a huge improvement, but if there’s no increase in talent, it will only bring about an outcry that his coaching is at-fault regardless.

Dampier?

Dampier does almost nothing for us.

Run the head-to-head at basketball-reference, and you’ll discover as I did that among many who do not match-up well with Dwight, Dampier is among the worst.

The objective is not to just bring in a big man, but to bring in a big man who can actually compete with Dwight to a higher level than we’ve been able to do previously.

The bad news is that there aren’t a lot of those guys out there.

The good news is that a few of them are probably attainable.

The bad news is that, if they’re attainable, it’s largely because they have such a bad contract. (Elton Brand, for instance.)

And, it’s not that you’re going to find a guy who completely matches, let alone beats, Dwight’s stats. But you gotta have a guy who at least competes and to some degree mitigates Dwight’s numbers with his own numbers either scoring or rebounding.

Thanks for the good reporting. Just a couple of thoughts here.

First, the motion offense– I have to admit, it gives me the heebie-jeebies, mostly because I remember when Bob Weiss was here, and he installed the motion offense, and it… well, in not so many words, it totally sucked, especially in crunch time. So, any thoughts about the implementation of the motion offense? What do the players think about it?

Second, I am excited to see how Jordan “Lebron dunker” Crawford performs… I followed him a bit in the NCAAs, and I was very pleased when the Hawks picked him up. Any word from the coaches about his performance or if we can expect to see him in the regular rotation?

Thanks– keep up the great work.

Right now the top subject is this new offense, but dont think Conner isnt concern about the defense, he may have tricks under his sleeve as well when it come to the defense..Patience my FANS, PATIENCE!!

Newkid : I’m not convinced that this ship won’t capsize. Too many drunk sailors, not enough oars. That’s realism, not pessimism.

KevinM : Most of the issues lie with the backcourt. We win through the frontcourt. And I don’t want to hear anything about JJ from anybody. Oh, and the ASG is a pile of cheap, retarded losers.

Niremetal : There goes that Rod character again. Why am I wasting my time posting here?

MannyT : How many links can I get into this post before the blog monster eats it?

Astro Joe : I still think hiring Larry Drew was a mistake. Anything short of an increase in wins is proof of this. I’m being sarcastic. No, really. By the way, it wasn’t Woodson’s fault that half the players on this roster suck, as they will under Larry Drew unless he has some magic juice to feed them. That was sarcasm as well. No, seriously it was.

Clyde : Is asleep in Rio de Janeiro, dreaming about Sean Williams in a Hawks uniform and a Brazilian hooker wearing nothing but a “Fire Billy and Woody” T-shirt.

Grandad : I have a trade idea! And it would work! By the way Mr. Cunningham, what is with your lack of emotional connection to the Hawks? You’re as bad about your passion for the team and the game as Doc is with his punctuation. Not that I should talk, what with my sentence and paragraph structure. I don’t care, I’m old! I’ll say what I want to! Where’s my girl Drmaryb? She don’t care how old I am! Ha!

DrmaryB : Tell it like it is! Preach it brotha! Take yo thong off and get yo scroll on! Ima hafta put my razor sharp cheetah thong on and get my Halle Berry on! Screw that, I’m better than Halle Berry! I love you Grandad, MWAH!!!! LMBoobiesO!

Rev in Tampa : I think I can outpreach Ken Strickland. C’mon Ken, let’s have a “preach off”, playa! You up for this? P.S., Marvin sucks, just not as bad as Rod says he does. But close.

dtsdeelite : D-Fence! D-Fence! D-Fence! The Hawks need to play defense, or they ain’t gonna win. Ya heard?

TS (stable…for the moment) : Do you think anybody will figure out that DUDLEY DO RIGHT is really me? P.S. – I think we should trade Al Horford, who is not even a quarter of the power forward that Josh Smith is. And Jeff Teague has two left hands, whatever the heck that is supposed to mean. Wait, was that a clue to who I really am? Aw nevermind, I’m getting attention, so who cares? ‘Smiles brightly’

Mz. Hawkdafied : Mmmm mmmm mmmm. I sure love me some Al Horford! Stay positive!

Ramon : Josh Smith is every bit as important as Al Horford, maybe more so. In fact, screw it, Josh is the man. Horford whines about his position too much. And I’ll drink and blog if I feel like it, dadgummit.

I am Soulstar : It’s all good baby, it’s all cool. You know why? Because I am the Soulstar. You won’t find a cooler blog handle than that. Like Freddy Jackson sippin’ a milkshake. Yeah, it’s that cool.

The Truth : I’m the real truth around here. And Joe Johnson is not a star. Ya feel me?

TS (stable for a second) : Sund needs to trade the useless Al Horford for somebody else’s all-star center. Like, right now. Can somebody help me pick another name to post under?

Ms Dee : Why y’all trippin’? Everything will be fine.

Fundamentals : I would have more to say about basketball. Problem is, there is always some knucklehead who wants to peck at other people’s opinions and the beat writer too. What is up with that ish? Anyway, back to basketball.

Northcyde : The argument from the 23rd post of the 2nd page of the blog before this was a bunch of BS. And I’ll prove it with stats, because I am the KING of RESEARCH around here folks. I will reach out with the sceptor of facts and B-slap you from the throne of stats. Oh, and the Hawks fan base stinks like a pile of dog feces, which is why I live in Tennessee. You guys have real problems.

Sent from my iphone. Biznaznitches.

Big Ray : I don’t care what Northcyde thinks. Which in no way explains why I read everything he types, and then respond to most of it, while trying to pretend that I’m ignoring it. Where is TS at? I’m going to try for the Guinness World Record 8,000th time to convince him that Al Horford isn’t all that bad of a guy. Of course, I might have better luck if I bring an old priest and a young priest with me. ‘Cause this will definitely require an excorcism. At any rate, I think I’ll just wait around for someone to say something good, so I can co-sign it and look halfway smart for once. :)

Najeh Davenpoop : Uh-huh. What I know is, I better not get left out of this “Typical Day at the Blog” nonsense again. Last time that cat left me out. And I’m gonna slap him in the back of the head when I see him. Soon as I figure out who it is. Speakng of slapping, how many people are going to post with names that have “truth” in them? I would have something very insightful and intelligent to say right now, but the fact is, I’m bored to death, and well…it’s a typical day at the blog. Ya feel me?

TS (unstable…again) : I hate Jeff Teague. I hate Larry Drew. I hate Rick Sund. I hate Al Horford. I hate myself. Okay, copy, paste, and then repeat 45,000 times. Sweet! That’s a whole two pages of blog all used up. Bwahahahahahahahaaaaaa!

Ken Strickland : I sure love Larry Drew. Let me count the ways. Blah, blah blah blah blah blah Drew blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, Drew blah. Blah blah blah blah Drew, blah? Well Drew blah blah blah blah blah blah! Larry Drew will not only lead the Hawks to a championship, but he will solve world hunger and change water to wine! Don’t you agree?

TS : Dear God, please trade Al Horford. He is not fit to live on this earth. Can we have Ghandi back?

Rod from College Park : What’s up y’all? I can’t stand Marvin. That’s about all I have to say. Tune in next time tomorrow, when I tell you about the song I wrote. It’s called “How I came to hate Marvin.” I’m out!

JeJe : Cunningham, you misspelled a word. By the way, I just discovered what the CAPS button does when you turn it off. Amazing!

Tidog : CAPS button? Is that what that was? Hey ya’ll, Rick Sund is the worst GM ever. Fuh Real.

and not fooling anybody but yourselves. Smell you guys later!

A Typical Day on the Blog

Sautee : I would have a pretty good witticism to insert here, but the truth is that I’m down to one liners.

Doc : It’s JSmash, not JSmoove. And stop trippin about my punctuation cuz i dont care. By the way the BASG is cheap and thats all i need to send Niremetal on a tirade that would embarrass a sailor

Niremetal : Screw you, Doc.

Ken Strickland : ….and another thing about how great Larry Drew is….

Astro Joe : Sarcasm? What sarcasm?

Vava74 : Bill Simmons is brilliant. He’s smarter than the entire crew working for ESPN. That is, until he says something mean about the Hawks. I will then surreptitiously reverse my position and opinion on him.

Ramon : I’ll drink and blog if I feel like it, dang it! Josh Smith is the man. Al Horford is a whiner. Why did we give Joe so much money?

Northcyde : If I hear ONE more person say that Jamal is better than Joe, I’m going to lose my mind like DMX. I might even smash my iphone. Now that is some serious ish!

Drmaryb : Smashed iphones! Don’t smash yo stuff, just get your scroll on! It’s a touch screen, it’s simple fool! Where’s my Grandaddy at?? Gimme my thong back, you old clown!

GT Alum : Man, this is so much friendlier than the Georgia Bulldogs blog. I wonder why?

Rod from College Park : I’m back y’all, and I got something new for ya. Check it out: Marvin’s game stinks like 2 day old burritos from Taco Bell. You heard it here first!

Niremetal : Rod, you’re a bonafide idiot whose sole brainwave capability is as directionless as a retarded ant with no antennae. Why am I posting here again?

The Department of Unintended Irony : Somewhere, sometime, someone will post something stupid, and I will be there to expose it. Like Rod declaring that he watches Marvin in warm-ups. That was just too good to pass up.

truthspitter : the ASG is a pile of garbage losers. The ticket prices are garbage. Mike Cunninham’s blog is garbage. MC, stop erasing my posts!

Northcyde : See what I mean about the fans?

Ken Strickland : ….and then Larry Drew came down from heaven and handed Moses the Ten Commandments….

Grandad : I have another trade idea. Drmaryb, I swear I did not take your thong. But I do propose a trade….

Big Ray : Northcyde, what is with you and fans?! Give it a rest! That does it, I’m not reading your posts anymore, mister! I mean it this time!

Ramon : I’s not drunk. I’s jus’ havin’ a taste

Astro Joe : Define “sarcasm” for me.

Mike Cunningham : I’m only going to answer questions for the first hour. After that you cannibals will have to feed on someone else. Why in the world did I ever move here from Miami?

Northcyde : See? Crazy azz fans, man.

Big Ray : Northcyde! Ooops…eh…hee hee….

JeJe I LOST THE CAPS BUTTON AGAIN

Najeh Davenpoop : We need a new blog.

Rick Sund : It’s not really me. But I will say a few things to make my namesake look silly. Not that he needs any help.

The motion offense wow!!!!!!!!!! it doesn’t matter what you run if not enough talent then it’s a failure, michael jordan the greatest player 2 ever play the game made any offense design look good and successful.
GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!
