Atlanta Hawks: Their Crawford conundrum

Can the Hawks keep Crawford smiling?

Can the Hawks keep Crawford smiling?

Just two weeks until training camp, blog people, and all is quiet on the Hawks front. And under the circumstances, “quiet” really means: “Jamal Crawford and the Hawks might be headed for a showdown.”

As everyone knows, Crawford wants a contract extension for what he believes to be his market value or, failing that, a trade. He’s pushing for an extension both because of the past (his Sixth Man of the Year season) and the future (the looming specter of a new CBA).

The Hawks have contemplated Crawford’s request for going on two months now. But they seem reluctant to offer him a long-term contract because of the past (long-term deals for Bibby and Marvin last summer and J.J. this summer) and the future (possible contract extension for Al).

That brings us to the present. The best-case scenario for the Hawks would be for Crawford to report to camp and put the extension talk on the backburner with promises to take care of him later, no hard feelings. That way Atlanta gets Crawford doing his thing off the bench for another season and doesn’t have to add him now to its growing list of long-term financial obligations.

But you have to wonder how that would sit with Crawford. In his only public comments since word leaked of his pay-me-or-trade-me request, Crawford didn’t shoot down the stories and instead pointedly declined to even talk about playing for the Hawks in 2010-11.

That doesn’t sound like a guy who has any intention of backing off his request. Crawford would report to camp without the promise of an extension since there’s no real advantage for NBA players to hold out. He also would have incentive to put in another good year with a good team and hit free agency next summer with his value still high.

But Crawford also would see that he’s the only member of Atlanta’s proverbial “core” who isn’t under contract beyond 2010-11. Whether you think the Hawks should extend Jamal or not, we’ve all seen situations where players (or people, really) who don’t feel appreciated or respected by their organizations also aren’t as productive.

The fact that Crawford apparently is willing to play out the final year of his deal elsewhere suggests he fits into that category. Crawford’s “nice guy” public demeanor is what you get in private, too, but this, as they say, is business.

So this is the dilemma faced by the Hawks. They have the most leverage because they have Crawford under contract and are under no obligation to offer him an extension or trade him. The Hawks could tell Crawford they aren’t in position to meet his contract demands and don’t intend to trade him, and then hope Crawford’s desire to showcase for his next deal while playing for a winning team eventually will trump any hurt feelings.

But taking that stance could threaten the team’s chemistry and cohesion before the season even gets started. I don’t need to remind you that both of those things unraveled for the Hawks by the end of last season. L.D. already has a lot on his plate before adding a disgruntled sixth man to the list.

That’s not to say the Hawks will give in to keep Crawford happy but they obviously have to consider how not doing so could affect chemistry. You can see where both sides are coming from in this. Harder to see is the room for compromise if Crawford sticks with his demands and the Hawks stick with their fiscal plan.

The Hawks probably anticipated Crawford would seek an extension after he slid seamlessly into the sixth man role and turned in his best season. What they may not have foreseen was that the request would come with a “or trade me” addendum, which has led to this delicate dance as camp approaches.

Things are quiet for the Hawks right now but a storm could be brewing.

DRMARYB-The motion OFF that LDrew will install definitely lessens the need for players with one on one penetrating ability, like Iverson. With Bibby on the roster, I doubt if LDrew wants another DEF liability at PG like AIverson. Jordan Crawford is definitely know for his aggressiveness, penetrating and scoring ability.

I think Sund and the ASG had a pretty good idea that JJ would resign if they offered JJ the money, which is exactly what happened. They certainly knew Jamal Crawford would be in the final yr of his contract, and with him earning SMOY, he’d want a raise.

I doubt if Jordan Crawford was drafted as insurance against JJ not resigning. I think they would have gone after a veteran to replace him and his team leading contributions, rather than relying on a low 1st rd draft pick. Having Jordon Crawford play half the season with Jamal Crawford, before possibly replacing him, is a wise idea.

ndtka, nice follow up points. i was terribly disappointed in the ASKG in comparison to the thunder. they seem to want a title, not hold onto 4th place. where did that attitude get the wiz? i hate to be the fly in the ointment but too much hinges on an untested rookie head coach. he quickly becomes the fall guy to hide management mistakes and buy time for those upstairs. personally i dont see “it” yet in teague and never saw “it” in acie either. my guy was stuckey, certainly not all star material but serviceable and would not have cost us the 40 mill bibby has. that has really crippled us and meant chills or something similar could not end up here. he cost big bucks his first year and a half here. i dont think that was woody’s fault any more than shels was. it was money management issues that got us that sh!t. i hope it was because if everyone signed off on that for talent then we are really sunk. i would rather be considered cheap than stupid if i were the then BASG now the ASKG.

I will put money on this…they let Jamal go, sign Horford to an extension, and Jordan Crawford becomes the new Crawford. Horford is more important than Crawford.

Mary Ellen:

We would not want to trade Jamal for Dampier.
Three reasons:
(1) We would have to absorb $3 mil [disparity in contracts].
(2) Talent for talent = bad trade
(3) Dampier’s value is; his contract is not guaranteed.
therefore a team [Charlotte] can cut him then re-sign him.
-Or-
Charlotte could cut him & another team could re-sign him.

Besides that he’s not good enough to play ahead of Al, Zaza,
or Etan which would really make it a bad trade.
[an elite player for a scrub] The equivalant of another team
trading their 2nd leading scorer for Cheeseburger.

We should have never signed JJ and used that money to sing JC1 and a legit center. I know that it’s too late now, but we are still in need of a C.

I say at this point instead of keeping an unhappy player, trade him now while he is on top for something of value. Maybe a young prospect big man. I would be ok with Spencer Hawes, Roy Hibbert, Greg Oden. I know Oden has not proven anything, but who knows whats left inside that body of his.

Has Drew made any statements in how he would utilize Jamal in his rotation? Woodson had a very distinct plan for how he rotated Jamal into games. It appeared to me that Woodson did not look at the the other team and place the five players who would cause the most difficult match-ups for the opposition. I did not get to watch the Hawks often enough, but I had the distinct impression, even before the playoffs, that Jamal was going to come into the game at pre-set times. It appeared that he did not rotate in for specific situations, but only according to the time on the game-clock.

I don’t know the rules for the SMOY award, but if it meant that you could not start a game or a percentage of games, then, if I were ever a coach, no player on my team would ever win SMOY because I would put the best five on the floor to start the game based on the match-ups.

Futhermore, it seems wise to mix things up for the sake of trying to keep the oppostion off balance in their pregame scouting & preparation. Maybe at the pro level these sort of mind games are irrelevant.

Worst ownership/GM in sports.

This guy Crawford is the BEST offensive player on this team. He scores WITH ease against the BEST in the game. He doesn’t dribble the ball for 20 seconds and take contested 20 footers. He puts the BALL IN THE BASKET.

He is our BEST OFFENSIVE player.

Yet ASG and Sund will alienate him and every other FA that comes up. Paying 13.5+ Million a year for freaking Duck and Minime? These guys SUCK. They are USELESS basketball players, one of whom is a career underachiever, and the other who is severely overweight and is the WORST starting point guard in this league (there are BACKUPS better than Bibby by a LONGSHOT).

I see, I did think JC2 was drafted as insurance if JJ or Jamal left.
I actually forgot about him, I can’t waite to see him ball.
He plays like he has a really BIG chip on his shoulders and

IDK about Powell or Jason? Damp, Etan, ZsaZsa looks good to me
for a three man rotation. I just don’t like the Jason Collins contract
@ all. How can he show up fat and greasy to a new team in the
NBA and just sit there all year?

Jamal may be over-rated at 10M with One Trick – as A Streaky Sniper!
Don’t get me wrong, he is one of my favorite Hawks, but Damp
does rebound and play solid position defense. An upgrade over
Collins for sure. Just my thoughts.

We could Jamal’s 10M to resign Horford and stay under the Luxury Tax,
especially if JC2 steps up and Pape Sy @ SF as well. I guess we
will know by the trade deadline what we need!

During his one year in Atlanta, we’ve seen two sides of Jamal Crawford. During training camp, we saw an older and shorter but more talented version of Boris Diaw. Great passing skills combined with the ability to score and the willingness to “fit in” to the team. Remember how the Hawk players talked about by Crawford’s ability to PASS the ball during the early days of last year’s training camp?

During the regular season, however, we saw a younger and taller but less talented version of Allen Iverson. Crawford showed that he is almost as good as AI at one-on-one offense but, unlike AI, didn’t work nearly as hard at individual or team defense. Remember former Head Coach Woodson’s comments—wanting Crawford to pass less and shoot more? Yes, Crawford won the 6th man of the year award but at what cost to the TEAM?

But that was last year. This is a new year with a new HC who wants his TEAM to share the ball on offense and use quickness and athleticism to overwhelm opponents on defense. A Head Coach who seems to understand that, unlike playground ball or the AND 1 tour, NBA basketball is a TEAM game.

Jamal Crawford-the passer can be very effective in HC Drew’s offense, get a lot of minutes at PG and SG (sorry Jeff Teague and Jordan Crawford) and would be worthy of an extension if he plays some D. However, Jamal Crawford-the shooter will be very frustrated in HC Drew’s offense, lose a lot of minutes at PG and SG (congratulations Jeff Teague and Jordan Crawford) and will be traded, with Marvin Williams, at the trade deadline to Utah for Andrei Kirilenko—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing for Atlanta even if Crawford the passer does show up.

I know this is off the Crawford topic but think about this for a quick minute—perhaps no Hawk will benefit more from playing in HC Drew’s offensive system than Zaza Pachulia!

There were times (albeit few and far between) when Zaza displayed excellent offensive skills-including some behind the back passes. However, Coach Woodson wanted him to be more of a “banger” and Pachulia was clearly frustrated in that role.

Don’t be surprised when Zaza showcases his skills and becomes a prominent member of the Hawks’ rotation. More effective PT from Pachulia will allow Al Horford to get more rest as well as more time at PF—two moves that work to the Hawks’ benefit.
