L.D. probably wouldn't consider this a 'switchable switch.'
(Checking in from a Miami holiday weekend filled with beaches, BBQ and . . . beverages)
We’ve heard about L.D.’s offensive philosophies but what about D? The short answer to what I know is the No. 1 question: Atlanta’s base defense under Drew will not feature switching on all (or most) screens.
But what he hopes to accomplish goes beyond Xs and Os and lineups. L.D. said he wants to develop a true defensive disposition for a team known more for finesse.
“Playing defense, it can be ugly sometimes,” Drew said. “Sometimes guys don’t like to do the ugly stuff, the dirty work stuff. Good defensive teams, their mindset is to go into games and outwork you. They don’t care how they do it. They do whatever it takes to shut you down. They have that aggressive mentality, where each game they go into it thinking ‘I am going lock in on my guy.’ and that works its way to the rest of the guys. You have to have that team concept and that aggressive mentality.”
A fanatical devotion to shutting down opponents is a trait of all true contenders. Atlanta’s lack of that quality has to rank at least alongside strategy and personnel as a major reason the Hawks have been a middling defensive team.
The Hawks ranked 13th in defensive efficiency last season, 11th in 2008-09 and 13th in ‘07-08. They were 24th in defensive rebounding rate in ‘09-10, 24th in ‘08-09 and 26th in ‘07-08. Atlanta’s rank in opponent true shooting percentage was 19th last season, eighth in ‘08-09 and 18th in ‘07-08. You can keep going down the list of ways to measure defensive performance and lately the Hawks rarely ranked in the top 10, never mind the top 5.
Defense is another area where L.D. is going to have to find a way to get more out of the guys he’s got. Changing their mentality is the obvious place to start. Drew has to galvanize a group that wilted so badly against the Magic. He has to help his players reach the “uncomfortable” effort levels that Al said they didn’t reach last spring.
There are familiar questions about Drew’s roster, too. It’s the same group of defenders (with an asterisk next to Jamal’s name) that couldn’t contain the perimeter. It’s still a power rotation that lacks a menacing 7-footer in the middle. It’s the same group that too often looked to Al and Smoove to go to work on the boards.
Does L.D. think he has the horses to play good, tough, straight-up D?
“I think we have the personnel to do it,” he said. “That’s why I use the term ‘accountability.’”
One way to annoy NBA players is to talk to them about defensive “stoppers.” So many times I’ve heard guys, especially guards and wings, scoff at the notion. There is no such thing, they say, because there are too many good offensive players and the hand-check rules make it nearly impossible to stop those kind of guys straight up.
Point taken, and L.D. said it’s one he recognizes. That’s why he said he there will be times when switching and other help-type schemes will be necessary.
“I think you have to make a decision on how you want to guard certain people,” he said. “Certainly game-by-game, adjustments will be made defensively. But you go into the game with the mindset of guarding your own people. I think we are deep enough we can get that kind of defense out of our guys.”
Drew said he doesn’t want that to go so far with tricking up the D that players use it as a crutch. You could see that happen with the Hawks last season. Players became so reliant on the switches that they tended to relax in anticipation of screens. Why fight through picks to stay with your man when he can be always be passed off to a teammate?
“I know exactly what you mean,” L.D. said. “You are not the first person I’ve heard say that. Different coaches have different philosophies on how they do things.”
The switching defense has its advantages. It can be effective against pick-and-rolls. It helped the Hawks cover up some of their limitations (even if it also could create other problems). But I think there is no question that using switches so liberally blunted Atlanta’s defensive aggressiveness.
Getting away from the switches is a matter of strategy for Drew, whose goal is for the Hawks to make only what he calls the “switchable switches” that don’t leave them in clearly bad matchups But ditching switches also is a matter of mindset.
“We need guys locking in and focusing on what the defense calls for,” Drew said. “We have the tools for it. We have some areas where got to get better at, but I think overall we have the tools to be a good defensive team. That is the challenge I am going to put to the guys.”
– Nothing new on the Jamal front. He still wants either a satisfactory contract extension or a trade but the Hawks still haven’t indicated if he will get either.
– French club Le Havre announced on its Web site that it has completed a buyout of Pape Sy’s contract. The Hawks haven’t received the paperwork and so don’t consider the deal to be official but they are optimistic there will be no snags.

MsDee,
When it’s YOUR team, you have to talk, motivate, play great, fight, speak up, and take blame. When someone looks at the Hawks, they say JJ, then the rest. If it’s going to be that way, then he has to step up.
Agree with you on the right timing. Surely he didn’t mean what he said, but you can’t react when you are upset.
I expect JJ to step it up and score more in the playoffs and become more vocal. When have you seen Joe waive at the crowd to stand up and be behind their team like Wade does in Miami?? That’s all I am saying.

Dr Mary,
I hear what u mean about Game 7, Lakers/Celtics and their talents, but I WANT TO believe the Hawks has the same talents, just needed a coach to DIRECT THEM!! Look how Doc is coaching, and leading, and encouraging, and guilding, and lifting up his PLAYERS AT ALL TIMES!!!! Even b4 the game when he said something in this nature, “When both teams (Us and the Lakers) meet again in the future, lets just make sure our rings touch each other”. You cant tell me that wouldnt push your players to the point of hustling for any and every ball to win!!

Most GLASS HALF EMPLY (Ken S. quotes…as u can see I LOVE positive KEN)fans on here dont believe a coach could possibly make a HUGE difference in the outcome of his team. Doc has a vision but the IMPORTANT part of his vision was that HIS PLAYERS BOUGHT INTO HIS VISION. His vision is no good if the players arent on board. I believe LD has an EXCELLENT vision for the Hawks, WE MUST (meaning everyone up top from JJ to the waterboy with the cornrolls) MUST BE ON BOARD with LD in order to have a finals like that!!

NAJEH-I’ve never made the argument that the Hawks don’t have weaknesses. I’ve actually made the comment that all teams have weaknesses, but the successful teams use their strengths to force other teams to focus on the strengths, and/or use their strengths to overcome their weaknesses.
My argument is with fans making an issue of every imagined weakness of the Hawks, and saying they have doubts about our new first time HC, new OFF/DEF, PG, players buying in etc, while ignoring our strengths. Yet, some of these same fans have absolutely no questions whatsoever about the Bulls’ ability to overcome all of the same issues that they claim is troubling them about the Hawks. We’ve heard no mention of concern about whether Bulls players will buy into the new HC and coaching staff, the new OFF/DEF systems, or any adjustment or chemistry issues due to adding 3 new starters, HC, coaching staff, and 3 key bench players.
Without any questions, some fans are willing to erase the 12 gms the Hawks finished ahead of the Bulls, and continue looking for any and all excuses to ignore any potential Hawk improvement. We’ll have stability, since we’ll start the season with 10 players from last yrs roster, which finished 3rd in the East with 53 wins.
The addition of Pape Sy, Jordon Crawford, JPowell and EThomas, starting and/or relying more on JTeague, makes us quicker, faster, deeper, more athletic and better, both offensively and defensively. Adding a new structured OFF/DEF system, one assistant to handle the DEF and one to work with the PG’s, holding players accountable etc, seem to be completely ignored by these doubting fans as far as potential Hawk improvements.
We finished TWELVE(12)gms ahead of the Bulls last yr. How can adding 3 starters, who are all OFF and little DEF, and losing 3 starters who were solid defensively, automatically make them that much better? We can argue this point endlessly, but we’ll see how things turn out when the season starts and progresses.
SAMUEL-The only person making an issue of MWoodson IS YOU. Yes, I’m glad he is gone, but my focus has been on the projected improvements and innovations promised by new HC LDrew. Whether you think your BELOVED WOODY is the best HC the Hawks have had in the last 2 decades or not, the fact is, he wasn’t good enough to measure up to what was expected of him, and was sent packing. GOOD RIDDENCE!

Is an amazing Coach and Motivator. He was almost fired before
KG and Ray Allen appeared on his roster. A great coach can not win without
great talent.
The Hawks have some very nice role players, but no future HOF’s.
We are a small market team, because our Owners have not put the
best team possible on the floor.
But, I like our team and we are very entertaining with the talent we do have.

We all (me included) assume that HOF’ers would automatically be HOF’ers if they werent coached & guilded with the right people and right mentors around them. Just because LeBron James is an EXCELLENT ball player, doesnt automatically put him in the books of a HOF’ers because, first of all, he left a team where he was definely headed in the right direction, but he wasnt “guided by the Right mentors” to convince him to stay in Cleveland. So as a result, he left and may have removed himself off the future list. He can win many rings with the Heat, but a HOF’ers, he MAY never get due to his past ‘Decision’.

Yeah, I didn’t want to jump the gun on the young gun!
But, Joe, Al and Josh definitely have the makings of HOF’s.
You said it Best! A great coach will put them in positions to
excel, grow and reach that level. Joe, personality – wise does
not beat his chest, jump up on the scorer’s table and self-promote
his status. He is a quiet leader, like a Tony Dungy, so, he may be
overlooked by most!
Joe does not need to be validated by the fans or others!
His personality is just fine and he does not like to hear himself

He is a very special talent, He is the Chosen One and has NOT
disappointed thus far!
He was the last 18 year old to be drafted #1 out of High School.
Nike signed him to 90M before he got off the school bus.
His Size, Strength and Skills are UNDENIABLE!
At this point? LeBron would have to melt-down completely talent-wise,
or, be like Mike Vick and end up in prison to escape the HOF.
Outside of that, you would have to pencil him in! DWade too!

I hear your point and its definely a valid point on LeBron, but he will be very hated by this ex-team Cleveland everytime he plays them in Cleveland for as long as he is in the NBA and also from comments by very highly respected HOF’ers of today in Charles Barkley & Micheal Jordan, just to name a few who will constantly and conventently bring up Lebron and how he could have stayed in Cleveland to win the BIG RING there instead of joining forces with his 2 buddies, Wade & Bosh. He lost a lot of cool points with that. Maybe if he would have went to ChiTown, different story.

LeBron laughing at all the hate that comes at him…..laughing all the way to the bank!
It takes more than one elite player to win an NBA ring….ask Kobe and Shaq…ask DWade…ask KG.
None of them did it without HOF material around them.
LeBron had little talent to help him….now he can prepare even more for the long stretch. He doesn’t have to do it all by himself every night. LeBron has earned his position and $$ in the NBA. He has been terrific at staying out of controversy when he could have thrown in the towel long ago. Barkley has zero room to talk about loyalty to anyone at any level.
Wonder what changes will take place to make this Hawks lineup a better team? What player will step up and show the most improvement? Lots of improvement can be made by several on last year’s roster.
I would like to see what kind of talent Powell has, being that he is still young and reminds me of a JJ Hickson from the little I have seen of him.
Teague? He better be able to lead this team in the early part of the season or he may never get big minutes…..especially if LD knows he has to win now to keep his chance to coach a 2nd year.

That is the other side if the tossed coin.
The fortunate players from the 80’s and 90’s are orchestrating the New Era.

Lorenzen Wright (RIP) haven’t figured out how to stay on the
Money – Train!
The conductor said: “All Aboard!” And, only Lord knows where and what these
cats were doing? Some, played so long ago, the FREE money just ran out.
That’s why you have to get an education when the scholarship is there and the talent is not. Gifted players like MJ, Kobe, LeBron, DWade and
Durantula only come along once in a while or lifetime.
Just watched NBA TV I Game Time and D-Scott just asked
Cheryl Miller, (who BTW was inducted into the FIBA HOF today) is the
only female Basketball player inducted into 3 HOF’s.
She was asked, “What do you think of the Big Three in So. Beach?”
Cherly basically said, “Two things come to mind when winning a
Championship. Chemistry & Injuries. If, The Heat have no injuries and
do not win a Championship this year? Who will be the first to come out
of character and point fingers?”
BTW, Cheryl Miller and Lisa Leslie (I believe), are the only two women to score
100 points in a game.
Congratulations to Cheryl Miller! The best female player to ever lace them up!
PS: Ms. Dee – what do them Kids know about that?

Sure sign that we need some news MC. Blog has completely broken down.
Coaching and setting the right expectations can make all the difference if our players truly buy in.
Watching the Lakers/OKC game today I closely watched Powell’s impact. Total team player who focussed intently on his role. Maybe, just maybe he can teach our bench a lesson.
How can a “scrub” as described by many on this blog attract Kobe’s respect and attention? Maybe getting 2-3 “scrubs” with real work ethic, heart and character can go a long way in teaching real roles. Talent and a lack of coaching have only gotten us this far, just maybe we can learn, grow and move forward.
IMHO it’s about competing 100% whether you lose in the 1st round or in the finals. Leave it on the court. Maximize talent and fans will respond. Who cares if a few pessimists on the blog don’t agree. They can banwagon another team and be gone. That’d be a blessing.
