Crawford wants out of Atlanta if he doesn't get an extension.
Jamal Crawford has told the Hawks he wants to be traded before the 2010-11 season if the team doesn’t offer a contract extension to his liking, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Crawford, whose current contract expires after the season, asked the Hawks for an extension last month but has yet to receive an answer from the team. If Atlanta balks at offering Crawford what he considers an extension reflecting his market value then he would rather play elsewhere for the final season of his contract, according to the person familiar with the circumstances.
The person did not want to be identified because neither Crawford nor the Hawks have commented on his desire for an extension. Hawks GM Rick Sund, who is on vacation, declined comment tonight through a team spokesman.
Sund’s practice has been to not extend contracts for veteran players who aren’t on their rookie-scale contracts.
Crawford, 30, will make $10.1 million in 2010-11. The Hawks acquired him in a trade with Golden State last summer and he thrived in a reserve role, often finishing games alongside Joe Johnson.
Crawford averaged 18 points during the regular season and 16.3 in the playoffs, both second on the team behind Johnson. Members of the media voted Crawford the league’s Sixth Man of the Year.
According to the person familiar with the situation, Crawford prefers to stay in Atlanta after he qualified for the playoffs for the first time in his 11 NBA seasons. But without a long-term commitment from the Hawks Crawford doesn’t want to play out the final season of his contract in Atlanta, the person said.
The Hawks may not have the financial will to add an extension for Crawford to their future salary commitments.
Signing Crawford to a large extension would likely push the Hawks’ 2010-11 payroll above the salary cap. Atlanta has about $50 million in salaries committed to 2011-12, including $18 million for Johnson and $12.4 million for forward Josh Smith.
In addition to those committed salaries, the Hawks might need to maintain flexibility to retain All-Star center Al Horford. Atlanta can work out a contract extension with Horford by November; if not, he would become a restricted free agent next season and could sign an offer sheet with another team that the Hawks would have the right to match.
If the Hawks decide to trade Crawford, they likely wouldn’t have much trouble finding good value in return. His scoring ability and expiring contract make him a valuable asset for teams seeking a talented shooting guard and/or salary relief following the season.
Crawford is seeking a contract extension while his value is high, but the uncertainty surrounding the expiring collective bargaining agreement and deals signed by other top sixth men also likely are contributing to his urgency.
The current labor agreement expires after the 2010-11 season and owners are seeking major concessions from players for the new CBA. If Crawford becomes a free agent next summer, he could be facing more restrictive contract rules under the new labor deal.
In determining his market value, Crawford is likely looking to contracts signed by fellow veteran reserve guards Manu Ginobili, Jason Terry and Ben Gordon.
Ginobili, who turned 33 last month, signed a three-year extension with San Antonio in April that’s worth about $39 million. Terry was 29 when Dallas signed him to a free-agent contract for $57 million over six years. And Gordon was 26 when he signed with Detroit last summer for five years and $58 million with a player option for the final season.

LOL . . the Dream are in the Eastern Conference Finals. Wouldn’t it be something if the Dream won a championship before the Hawks?
Not hating on them though. I like women’s basketball. That run they went on in the 2nd quarter, was reminscent to the run the Hawks went on vs Milwaukee in the 3rd quarter of Game 6. Just a thing of beauty by both teams.

We hear about all the other teams. Is that because the Agent is putting out the rumors to stir the pot and move the team THEY really want.
I know DENVER has to be willing as well to get what they want too?
Do you see a 3 team deal, maybe?

This should have been a simple exercise for Dr. Do-little Sund. Review the roster and move the players that are not part of the Hawks future. It’s clear, Mo Evans and M. Bibby fits into this category based on age, production and needs of the team. Case in point; if we have a starting PG in Bibby and there is still an outcry for a better starting PG to defend with a better “motor” to run the “new offense” with overall better production, then the overpaid aging Bibby is part of the problem and not the solution. Many on these blogs have said this already. Since we have pressing financial needs to re-sign other players and/or make other deals, buying-down now to an alternate vet PG using our TPE and saving money puts us in a better position to do other deals like even pursuing Melo and/or re-signing Jamal. Let’s face it; we’re not winning a championship this year with these players so the theme of “I like our core” is illogical when the team is on a budget and trying to improve. Since Bibby is not getting any younger, it is better to move him now then later. I realize he expires next year, but we need the cap relief now. As for Mo Evan, moving him now will also help free-up more cash and have little impact on the team assuming we get a vet min replacement that can upgrade our backup SF needs. He’s playing out of position as a SF anyway. After shelling out the max deal with JJ, replacing these players is essential and could save us nearly 6 million dollars which is necessary if the Hawks want to maintain a quality roster on a budget and stay competitive in the east. Sund must find a way of thinking “out-of-the-box” and get this done. Otherwise JJ max deal will take its toll on this highly budget conscience team.

ATL / Denver – scenarios that are realistic:
(all these work on trade machine)
Denver gets: Jamal & Mo
Hawks get: Chauncey
Denver gets: Jamal, Mo, JC2
Hawks get: Chauncey & Arron Afflalo
Denver gets: Marv & Bibby
Hawks get: Chauncey
Denver gets: Marv, Bibby, Mo, JC2
Hawks get: Chauncey & Arron Afflalo
*Draft picks would accompany any or all these trades.
[pursuant to Denver's motivation]
*Why include JC2?
[further motivate Denver]
*Why Arron Afflalo?
6-5, 215, 43% three pt shooter, defensive stopper,
only 25 years old, *played for Howland @ UCLA,
*[means he knows how to play]
essentially replaces the JC’s. (would be a steal)

Northcyde, I read the article & the comments. The following is the most poignant fan post:
Hey, StayPuff, hit the road and take JR witcha.
Check it out, itz on today’s Huffington Post: “MarshMelo wants out of Denver and he and his agent have made it clear.” Bye bye! And when you pack don’t forget Sludge-For-Brains JR.
The only thing I’ll miss about the Ol’ Marsh is pointing out:
1. His total lack of desire to play D,
2. Lazy- team play,
3. Truckloads of turnovers,
4. Total lack of any working knowledge of the words, “PASS” and “ASSIST,”
5. Inability to play hard in Q-4. Hey dude, forget China, move to Canada, hockey only has 3 periods,
6. His pouting and dissing teammates when he plays like a slug,
7. Girl-slapping and running at The Garden, PRICELESS!
8. Did I mention NO D? How about NO HEART, NO DESIRE, NO CLASS, and LAZY!
Reminder for those of you old enough to remember, can you picture Magic’s passes and play and how he involved his teammates making them all play better? The MarshMelo is just the opposite, he turns teammates into statues.
Q: When MarshMelo comes on the court, how cold does it get?
A: Absolute zero! The point where all motion stops. (Look it up.)
Hit the road, Marsh and don’tcha come back no more, no more, no more, no more,

I honestly beleive the majority of you need to wake up from this dream of Melo coming here.
Would I love him here, despite all the negative posts I just read in the Denver Post? Yes ofcourse, who would’nt. The fact that our City of Atlanta has not been mentioned anywhere in his list of possible destinations, is whats keeping my feet firmly to the ground of this immensely polluted but yet gorgeous Earth of mother nature.
However, seeing as tho its become pretty evident that the Nuggets are inching closer and closer to rebuilding their team, I think this would be an amazing opportunity to snatch a few players we need. I dont beleive the Nuggets would show any intrest in Marvin at this point. Would you want to rebuild with a player like Marvin Williams if you were the Nuggets. I dont mean any disrespect to him but lets be honest, he is’nt that good.
Plus after reading that if ‘Melo is to join us, we’d have to make a decision to either keep Al or ‘Melo. Thats a decision I dont wanna make. I’m a person who gets emotionally attached to my team. When Francouer of the Braves was traded, my heart was broken. He was a hometown kid. Same with Mark Tiexera after he left. I get attached to them becuase they are wearing my city’s uniform. I think the worst was when we lost Andruw Jones. I quit watching the Braves after that. And only followed nightly scores. Having lost the opportunity to see CJ and AJ hit back to back HRs was devastating….
Lets sit back till Sund returns from his vacation and see how everything folds out. As a closing statement, I dont expect Carmelo Anthony to wear a Hawks Jersey next season.

Rick Sund has talked about building a model like what Detroit had when they won a title with Chauncey leading the way, but I saw this on the Denver article that one of the fans commented on.
Teams that won a title with superstars: 63

History suggests that the way to win a title is with a superstar/hall of famer. Unfortunately, the Hawks options are limited.

It seems that the loss of Orlando last year by the way it happend has angered a lot of fans. I think if Atlanta played 4 competitive games against the Magic or played five games I think the mood would’ve been different. I have alwys enjoyed watching the Hawks going back to the Nique days even though I am a Knicks fan. I think one of the problems that need to be addressed is are they going to build around Horford or Smith cause I feel one of them has to go. Horford is a power forward playing out of position and Josh Smith cant really play small forward. The team needs to move away from running plays though Joe Johnson he will begin to tail off as he is getting older. As much as I like Melo even if he came to Atlanta I am not sure how well he fits the team. If you think about it is he that much different than Joe Johnson?Only differnce is Johnson wont take volume shots like Melo has. Even if Melo were to come to NY I dont know if he were to come to NY I dont know if it puts them past the second round. If he goes to the Hawks It would make the team better but you have to structure certain type of players around him for him to excel look at when they made the trade for Billups how much the team played better.
As a Knicks fan whose team has an inept owner and been bad for a long time now I will be happy to just make the playoffs this year. The Hawks will make the playoffs and it is really about growth of the youth going forward. With a few moves here and there just develop some of the players such as Teaque or Horford or Smith or both and you will be a solid team for years. It is simimilar to what Portland is going through. It is going to be hard to beat Miami or even Orlando and Boston. I remember when KNicks was good against the Bulls but never beat them with Jordan but played competitive and played hard with them. I think that is all Atlanta fans are asking for when they show in the playoffs.
My questions for long time Atlanta Hawks fans are did you feel the samw way when Nique played the early nique years till the later Nique years with Augmon Blaylock Koncack and even later with the Steve Smith Blaylock Mutumbo days?Did you feel they had a chance to get to the finals or was content with being in the playoffs and being competitive? I mean the only 2 I can remember with the Nique days is the one that went seven against bird they should’ve won game 6 at home and losing the series against the Bucks with the Malone Theus Wilkins team. Outside of that Nique teams lost to better teams I believe.
Even though other teams did get better it is not like the team you have is a 35 win team. I dont see that. I see between 45-50 win team.

This is crazy! JC needs to stay with the Hawks cause he does alot for the team and they just gone let him walk. He is last year six man of the year were are they gone to find another player off the bench that does what Jamal does. He drops numbers in all stats and not to metion that he makes this team better. He is the second leading scorer after JJ and not even a starter that is really saying something. I know that AL is the next on the list but when talking about the hawks you can’t leave out JC. they should hve not offered Bibby and Marvin ocntracts the should have traded them in a package deal and they could have keep JC and JJ now we gone have to settle for some less cause ASG don’t want to pay. I hope Rick Sund Changes his rule just this time and offer JC an extention. this makes me not want to get my season tickets cause I will be missing one of the 4 I come 2 C.

This is a trade that makes sense for all parties
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=253mqfd
Sacramento gets: Jamal Crawford and Charlie Villanueva
Denver gets: Marvin Williams and Zaza
Detroit gets: Samuel Dalembert and Francisco Garcia
Hawks get: Tayshaun Prince and Nene Hilario
Why this works:
Sactown gets better at SG, which is much needed and overall. They have enough depth at the C position.
Denver gets a young SF and a young PF/C. Kenyon is expiring. Nene cost a nice little bit. They get two players for Nene’s price and they can now look to move Melo for the best player possible without needing a SF.
Detroit gets rid of Villanueva’s contract and a much needed length and size with Dalembert. Dalembert expires so they save like $4.5 million over the long haul. Maybe someone of these teams throws them a pick to sweeten this if they fill a little sour.
Hawks stay under luxury for now and near future since Prince is expiring. Problem after resigning Al next year no way we can resign Prince without going over the luxury. Meaning your in the same situation you would be in with Jamal at end of the season

Suck it up. Jamal is the most creative Hawk there is.
Stop talking about Shaq. His career is about over. I counted mentions of the rookie Crawford at about 7 to 0 over Teague in the opening comments of this blog. Is it now obvious to everyone that Teague will be passed over? (Things change really fast around Blogsville). Manu is 33 didnt play nearly as well as Jamal did last year and got that extension .
Its one thing to say that the plan is to hold onto jamal and try and move him at the deadline as his expiring is very valuable .
Buts its another thing entirely to start lying and lose all common sense .
Jamal was a top ten sg last year and in the nba you get paid for scoring just take a look at every non rookie contract for a sg in the league.
And why would the Nuggets trade Nene lol seriously these anti Jamal tirades the past day or so should be an embarrassment to all hawk fans .

Rick Sund is a bum. He killed the growth of this team by resigning Marvin mainly, and Bibby and Zaza on a smaller level. Marvin should have been the guy they did a Chillz type sign and trade for, meaning they should have let Marvin walk for a 1st rd pick and trade exception and we would have been much better off considering the best case scenario is that Marvin develops. Which is the same best case scenario for a rookie. The guy has been in the league 5+ years and some idiots are still waiting on him to start to develop.
On the other hand, can’t cry over spoiled milk. We are screwed, there is absolutely no way that we can resign Al and resign Jamal without going over the luxury mark next season. We will be at $65.5 Million after resigning Al because he is getting a Boozer type deal from someone, that means he will be starting at about $13.5 million in 2011-2012, and we also have to pick up the option on Teague. That means 8 players under contract, needing to sign 5 more with less than $5 mill left over, that means 2nd rd picks and minimum level players will fill out this roster next year.Well we will have atleast 1 1st round pick but the way Sund does business we will probably trade it for fish sticks or draft a 6″3 SF. That means you better hope Teague and Jordan Crawford are some good.
Lastly, all we can do is hope for a trade were we get some top notch player back and make it to the Finals. Maybe then the ASG would go into luxury to bring the team back, but we really don’t have the assets to get Carmelo without giving up Al or Josh. We do have the assets but other teams trades look so much better if we are not giving up Al or Josh. We are stuck with this mediocre bunch, just face it. Crawford is the least of our problems. He is a side show that does not deserve this attention unless he can bring us back something really good
