Atlanta Hawks: No Shaq . . . now what?

With Shaq off to Boston here’s a quick epilogue as it relates to the Hawks:

I’ve been told that Atlanta wouldn’t budge on giving Shaq a starting nod over Al, who is after all still only 24-years old and an All-Star. Shaq believes he will get the starting nod over Jermaine O’Neal in Boston as Kendrick Perkins rehabs from his knee injury.

Atlanta also wasn’t willing to pay Shaq more than the minimum and that was a sticking point for him. He didn’t want to sign for the minimum when the Hawks had their bi-annual and mid-level exceptions available because of the perception that would create–as in the Hawks could have paid him more but didn’t. That’s not the case with Boston, which had neither of those exceptions and so could only give him the minimum.

The big guy still has his pride.

The Hawks thought Shaq could help them and would be a good risk at the minimum salary despite his history of negatively effecting locker rooms and tending not to respect coaches who aren’t Phil Jackson or Pat Riley. It could have been a potential headache for L.D., who already has a lot to deal with in his first gig as a head coach.

So that’s that. . . .

The Hawks still are in the market for a center (I’ve still heard nothing to indicate they are seeking a wing) and they have veterans Francisco Elson, Brian Skinner and Josh Boone on their radar. Not so much Kwame Brown, who is thought to still be seeking a deal for more than the vet minimum.

Beyond those options, I also could see the Hawks waiting to see if any centers shake free as teams buy out vets when training camps open. They also might consider bringing some young center prospects to camp and give them a month to earn the 13th roster spot. There is some interest in Garrett Siler but he’s got a lot to prove after a bad showing at Summer League.

There’s still about two months until camp opens so there’s still time for moves to be made. But that 13th roster spot will remain open for now.

– Hawks assistant GM Dave Pendergraft has emerged as an early candidate to become Denver’s top basketball executive. Pendergraft also is one of several candidates for Phoenix’s GM job.

The Nuggets let go of VP of basketball ops Mark Warkentein earlier this week.

Your mother had it going on. Yes back in the late 60’s amd and 70’s music were universal. I don’t think we will ever see them days again in the music industry. What a shame. I just got off the phone with my friend and blues artist Bobby Rush and we was discussing the same things that you were posting to Rev in Tampa about.

“Grandad – I also said, why would you want to take the person who holds the record for Blocked shots – 1,000+ at the youngest age, away from the basket – and that’s exactly what you would do making Josh a 3 – donquite get what you mean by “jump shot” only’t . There is a defensive end of the floor you have to think about.”
“Woody made him a 4 because he was a horrific jump shooter”
SteveW:
“stop the idiocy.”

I’m glad my feelin’s ain’t tender.
However, I’ll not resort to name-callin’.

1st of all – on offense:

“dont quite get what you mean by “jump shot” only’” ?
That is you referring constantly to Josh can’t shoot.

If Wdsn made him a [4] for that reason, then why did
it take him (what) four years to get him to stop
shooting 3 pointers?

I hope your remarks are tongue in cheek about:
“But if in the motion offense it doesn’t matter – why not leave him at PF or make him a C? Or shooting guard?”
Because essentially you made my point.
Assigning numbers to players don’t mean anything.

2nd – defense:
you keep saying over & over, youngest guy ever,
blocked shots, yada yada yada.
Once again, Wdsn played switching def & Josh
guarded everyone from point to center.

You mentioned, he’s the quickest [4] in the game
[paraphrase] yet he will be the slowest [3].
The jump from [4] to [3] is not that drastic.
Plus Marv is not quicker than Josh.
He Josh would have to be *made* to get down
in *stance*.

I’m glad to know I’m debating with a coach.
How long? (collegiate)

Myself, a lowly HS Coach. 30+ years.
Every one motion offense & man defense.
Don Meyer was one of my greatest mentors.

This idiot is still waiting for your response
to my query, concerning how you would defend
specific situations. (previos post)
P&R with J&J etc.

In conclusion, even with match-ups @ the [4]
stretch [4's] such as Troy Murphy will pull
Josh away from the hoop. As will [5's] like
Bargnani. (you may see Marv on a [5])
*flexibility* The game is changin’.
We are blessed with 2 forwards that are not
“long” range shooters. Look for LD to seek a
[5] that can face & stretch the floor.

Big Ump,

There’s a wonderful book you should read, if you haven’t already. It’s called “Sweet Soul Music” by Peter Guralnick. It’s mostly about Southern Soul Music – (Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and Macon), but the state of the music industry is also discussed. You and I are close in age (I’ll be 61 this fall), so I’m sure we grew up with the same music. It’s a wonderful read and made me go back (again!) and listen to Otis, Bobby Bland, Jackie Wilson, and of course JB and many, many others.

You might find a copy at Amazon used. But I’m sure you’d love it.

“Here’s another question I have: does anyone actually know for a fact what Drew’s offense is going to be?”

The answer is “No”.
However, two points need to be made:
(1) LD has a background with the “Princeton” offense.
(2) Summer League = Ball movement, player movement,
ball reversal, sreening & cutting, + catch & shoot.

By the way would you give us a phonetic

And the stop the idiocy was addressed to those who don’t like the 5-1 designations, saying they didn’t apply to Drew’s offense – didn’t know you were in that tribe. Didn’t call anyone an idiot -said stop the idiocy. Big difference.

Have no idea how saying if designations don’t matter in Drew’s offense, why not say he’s the C or PG? Not sure how that makes your point.

Oh well.. if we can ever have a lucid discussion on another topic, would love to. Be blessed!

Grandad – In conclusion – I assume your in favor of making Josh a SF:

1) Because it won’t matter in the motion offense.

2) It would allow Al to be a PF

3) It would put Marv on the bench

Ok – that’s your opinion. I said it would work possibly if – 1) Josh became a better jump shooter.

2) Josh became a little leaner, instead of filling out like Karl Malone – for quickness sake.

That’s my opinion – no need to say I called you an idiot when I didn’t – and say I said Josh was the quickest PF in the league – when I didn’t. And to say he would be the slowest SF in the league – when I didn’t. No need to exaggerate to make your case – let’s just be buds dude!

One thing that the Hawks will have to do this year is to draw more fouls. We’re are at the bofttom of the league when you look at the amount of Free Throw attempts a game. One of the main things that I would like out of LD offense is more baskets off free throws.

Let’s look at some of the tops teams total free throw attempts and the top two players on those teams free throw attempts

Atlanta Hawks

total = 1914

Josh Smith = 422
Jamal Crawford = 315

Cleveland Cavaliers
total = 2180

Lebron James = 773
Shaquille O’Neal = 226

Miami Heat
total = 1931

Dwyane Wade = 702
Michael Beasley = 240

Oklahoma City Thunder
total = 2210

Kevin Durant = 840
Russell Westbrook = 422

Los Angeles Lakers
total = 1985

Kobe Bryant = 541
Pau Gasol = 362

Boston Celtics
total = 2090

Paul Pierce = 433
Rajon Rondo = 282

Orlando Magic
total = 2176

Dwight Howard = 816
Vince Carter = 306

Some of these teams earn a lot of points on free throws. JJ is not even one of the top free throw earner for the Hawks. If JJ can get more free throw attempts then he could take his scoring average up.

Macaroni Tony

August 8th, 2010
9:37 pm

also look at this team

Denver Nuggets

total = 2508

Carmelo Anthony = 612
Chauncey Billups = 512
Nene =416

Macaroni Tony,

FTs are huge. Its easy points, and sometimes when a player or the offense is struggling, free throws can get them going.

But when your starting PG only gets 80 FTA for the season, that’s a problem. Plus JJ does not do a good job of drawing fouls, and the refs don’t give him the calls he deserves.

I think drew’s motion offense will lead to more FTs. But Josh Smith needs to shoot a better % from the line, and I think teague will get more FTA than bibby.

Please post the Celtics, Lakers, Bulls, NO and Cavs drafts sine 1992 and THEY WILL LOOKS JUST AS BAD.

Drafting “SUPER STAR” is pure luck. The job of a GM is to draft quality NBA player…Babbock was Bad, Billy Knight was Good and I think Sund will be better.

PS. Remember there 30 teams in the NBA and you were using 2 players from other teams as an example of how bad the Hawks draft…..28 other teams got it wrong that year also.

If Teague becomes a starter, that will be 50% of our 1st rd draft picks since will be starters on a 53 win team.

AC Law brought us Jamal and Boris brought is Joe…..I will put that against any team.

drmary and Grandad,

My trade proposal that I linked off of the ESPN Trade Machine was as follows:

It’s a three way trade between the Hawks, Cavs, and Pistons-

Cavs get-Marvin Williams, Mike Bibby, and Chris Wilcox (Cavs decrease salary by $3.7M and get below the luxury tax)
Pistons get-Zaza Pachulia, Jamal Crawford, and Jamario Moon (Pistons increase salary by $3.3M but only makes their cap @ $61.6M)
Hawks get-J. Varejao, Mo Williams, T. Prince, and J. Jerebko (Hawks increase salary by $800,000 but cap only goes to $67.5M, which is well below the luxury tax)

Hawks line up-

PG-Mo Williams/Teague
SG-JJ/Crawford2
SF-Prince/Evans/Sy
PF-Josh/Powell/Jerebko
C-Horford/Varejao/Collins

i look forward to seeing how zaza, al, josh, jj and either bibby or crawford do on the floor together. i was surprised to look at 82 gms and see that woody had never used that combo enough to see credible minutes. there were times when other teams ran bigs at us and we were over. i think this would have matched up well against some of those combos and maybe even caused a shift from the other team away from what was working so well. josh will over power some threes if he has to defend them to counter what they do if he is put in that situation. it isnt like in his role in woody’s switching defense’s he didnt have to do it form time to time anyway. it should be fun to see if some of these new combinations work on d and o for LD. he is going to have to come up with something creative as sund sure as hell wasnt this summer.

we know now the answer to WWSD? not a frigging thing. i am sure are some point gearon is going to chime in how the askg werent holding back the gm from exercising his will by handicapping him on the financial end, right?

Someone earlier was wondering why Nique isn’t in the top 50 greatest while Barkley is. Well that’s because Barkley was a much better player. I’m not going to be biased. Nique was basically Danny Granger with dunks and rebounding but no range. Barkley was a physical beast with an all around game and he went to the finals 3 times while Nique could get his team past the 2nd round. I bring this up because our fans are doing exactly what we did with Nique in the 80s–worshiping a stat-stuffing superstar who couldn’t get us over the top. We just signed up to have Joe Johnson hold our title chances hostage for at least 5 more years because he “produces” and some of you youngins are actually OK with it!

I’m also sitting back and LMAO at people whining about second round picks. Like Dexter Pittman was going to put us over the top or something. If we had a analytics and scouting dept like Houston, a team that is actually successful at drafting useful players in the 2nd round, then I might care but this is the Hawks so I’m not going to mope about them not spending 3 million for a fat tub or lard.

I am a nice “chap”.
-And-
You seem like a nice enough feller yourself.

However, we must straighten out a few things.
If I’ve misread then my apologies.
On the other hand, as for following a
logical progression, it seems to me,
that means only staying on your points
ad nauseam.

Some questions:
“those who don’t like the 5-1 designations”
What do you mean [5-1 designations]?

@ 9:10 pm I was horsin’ around with the “idiot”
remark. Alot o’ folks on here know I keep things
light.
The abbreviations:
My query – How would you defend Josh & Joe on the
pick & roll. Joe is the screener. Also the pick & pop.
Same situation. My point being Josh is a slasher + a
terrific passer. I asked this on two previous posts.

How is that germane to the point at hand?
“Woody made him a 4 because he was a horrific jump shooter”
Your quote – that makes it germane.

5:18 pm
4) “You take one of the quickest PF’s in the game, and turn him into one of the slower SF’s in the game”
I did say *[paraphrase].

Now, certainly were friends.
I was serious about how long you coached.
I respect that. I failed to mention that
I am currently retired and hate it.

In conclusion, I’m in favor of:
*competition for pos.
*bsketball players are just that, basketball players.
*we need more size / suggesting J&A play forward.
[together]
*Joe will need to play [3] some as well.
Teague & Jamal @ [1] & [2]
*versatility is important in today’s game.
***We need a Big & with J&A he needs to be
a stretch [5] who can pass + defend the rim.
Oh yeah – I think Marv is a [4].
Would be a great high post.
Has the length to defend + the butt to hold his ground.

Grandad – only coached 3 years – at a theological school! Left because I went into Pastoring..Without going into alot of detail – we did play some serious competition.

I do not understand this question you asked:

My query – How would you defend Josh & Joe on the
pick & roll. Joe is the screener. Also the pick & pop.
Same situation. My point being Josh is a slasher + a
terrific passer. I asked this on two previous posts.

Answer – If the motion offense does away with Center – PG distinctions on offense – why couldn’t JJ and Josh do this now? Why does Josh have to move from 4 to 3?

Another answer – those who don’t like the 5-1 designations”
What do you mean [5-1 designations]? 5 being the Center – 1 the PG and everything in between.
Some on this discussion board have said these are no longer valid designations in LD’s motion offense – you seemed to include yourself in that group. That is what I mean.

Your quote about Woody – and my quote also – How is that germane to the point at hand?
“Woody made him a 4 because he was a horrific jump shooter”
Your quote – that makes it germane.

Just because Woody made him a 4 – I think he was in hopes that Josh would not be in a position to hoist up his wild shots. Josh and Woody had well known conflicts as you remember.

Remember the huddle where Woody said to Bibby – tell Josh to quit taking long jumpers – and Bibby replied – you tell him! Somebody got through to him this past year. Doesn’t effect the basic points.

And if you think Marv is a 4 – you just gotta think that Josh is a 4

Josh improved immensely last year. If he truly is a student of the game – his words – and takes another step forward – Wow! We have a great one on our hands – just below LeBron, Kobe, DWade and the gang.

And I’ve been researching the big 3 we’re supposedly looking at – Brian Skinner, Elson, and Boone – even Kwame – all are really absolutely horrid – Boone probably the best out of the bunch.

I’m not sure we shouldn’t just go with Bonsu, Aminu, and/or Siler – or even Amunson if the price is right.

People say Kwame’s low post D is good – I guess I gotta trust them on that – the rest of his game looks terrible right now – but a very good athlete.

NAJEH-There are several reasons for my optimism and belief that his approach is the antithesis of Woodson. He’s insisting on
1-ball and player movement
2-increasing JTeague’s mins and giving him an opportunity to start,
3-expanding his rotation,
4-installing a structured OFF and not relying on the ISO as our primary option,
5-eliminating the switching DEF,
6-holding players accountable, especially on DEF,
7-committing to consistently playing uptempo and running,
8-getting Marvin more involved in the OFF,
9-committing to developing and playing rookies,
10-hiring and putting an assistant in charge of the DEF,
11-making a commitment to help JJ become a more efficient scorer.
12-Making it perfectly clear he wants Smoove to initiate his OFF near the basket, rather than on the perimeter.

Can you honestly say you noticed any of these things taking place under Woodson? For several yrs I preached about the problems Woodson created, and/or wouldn’t address, and actually advocated he be replaced by LDrew. So, after getting my wish, why wouldn’t I be excited and optimistic about this teams prospects, especially with the likelihood that most, if not all, of Woodson’s negative issues will be resolved?

We’ve already heard a couple of players, as well as LDrew, state how he was allowed to utilize part of his OFF during practices. And during summer league play, MCunningham talked about noticing the extensive use of picks, as well as constant ball and player movement.

The Joe & Josh P&R sit was to show Josh’s ability
to perform effectively @ the [3] pos.

Example – pick & roll:
Joe down screens for Josh, Josh option to drive -or-
pass to Joe cutting to basket. 2nd option, Joe posts,
Josh kicks to wing or high post with Joe 6-8 240
posting almost anyone matched against him. Josh’s man
must honor drive.

Pick & pop:
Joe back screens for Josh, Josh drives, draws double team
Joe open for three. [over-simplification]

Hand-off:
Josh’s man sagging [not honoring Josh].
Joe or Jamal come around & rubs man off on Josh,
wide open for jumper…too late for Josh’s man
to recover & close out.

Why not use these plays with Josh @ [4]?
You can.
My point though was to prove Josh can be effective
in many ways as a [3] due to his play-making ability.

All these & more are available with motion principles.

By the way my older brother is a minister [also retired].
My # 1 son is a minister as well.

“If Teague becomes a starter, that will be 50% of our 1st rd draft picks since will be starters on a 53 win team.

AC Law brought us Jamal and Boris brought is Joe…..I will put that against any team.”

The ‘04 draft was Billy Knight’s finest hour. That’s when the Hawks started to turn things around. Shelden Williams was a bump in the road… wasn’t alot of talent in that draft.

So I agree, I think Teague can start in this league… we don’t need much from him besides protecting the ball, playing defense and taking open shots created by other players.

I think Jordan Crawford is going to be nice as well, and that’s a good thing because giving Joe $120m means we can’t afford to keep Jamal Crawford. His 18ppg in the playoffs and expiring contract make him too big of a bargaining chip.

By the way, we got Jamal and Joe in salary dumps, not based on the outstanding talents of Boris Diaw and Acie Law. We will be dumping Jamal Crawford’s salary at the trade deadline just like we dumped the salary of Josh Childress (lottery pick) for a future second round pick.

It’s not JJ’s salary that will keep us from resigning JaCrawford. He’ll likely be a casualty of us resigning AHorford next yr. After looking at the way everything worked out with JJ, I’m beginning to think Jordan Crawford was drafted more as JaCrawford’s eventual replacement than as a hedge against us not resigning JJ. Actually, drafting him actually served both requirements.

Everyone knows that Horford is a PF forced to play C for the Hawks. He cannot guard the elite true centers when the playoffs come around. It will be the same result, exit in 2nd round. These cheap owners are willing to overpay Joe Johnson by about 5 million per year (no other team offered close to what the Hawks paid him). Why was Johnson’s salary set so high ? He would have taken much less (from the Hawks or some other team). So you overpay for JJ but won’t get a true center, a position the Hawks have been weak at since the days of Moses Malone ? Moronic indeed.

Grandad – I think you just made my point – Josh can do this just effectively from the 4 as the 3. Josh has become a phenomenal passer BTW – and his assists #’s soared this past year.

Still think Josh is for now a better 4 than 3, giving us a better mismatch – and will possibly (probably) be in the future as well. Def. think we need another C to go along with Al and ZaZa – with Al playing some 4 also.

I’m high on Josh Smith’s potential….

Ken S,

With Mo Evans and Jamal expiring, I also think Jordan Crawford is supposed to be Jamal’s replacement.

Hopefully we will be able to trade Bibby next offseason.

“I honestly have a hard time believing that Drew had some amazing revolutionary ideas for running an NBA offense and simply kept it under wraps the entire time he was an assistant under Woody.”

I agree. I think Drew was saying what people want to hear, then went on Amazon to buy a bunch of books about motion offenses. Notice he hasn’t been sitting for a lot of interviews to give specifics.

Somebody tell me why the Hawks gave JJ so much more (contract) than any other team was offering ? They bid his contract up themselves. The Knicks couldn’t have afforded him after signing Stoudamire. There were no other suitors either. I hate Hawks ownership.

Its going to be a Heat-Celtics Eastern Conference finals. We all KNOW that. Bosh,LeBron, and Wade together ? OMG. It’s over.

Then it will be Heat-lakers, Heat win in 6 games. Why even play the season ?

The Yankees have 6 all-stars at 9 positions. The Heat have 3 all-stars at 5 positions. You do da math…

Remember Miami won a championship with only Wade & Shaq. Now Bosh is better than Shaq and they added the best player in the NBA, LB. Unfair really…

The Hawks should have went over the cap & signed Stoudamire (along with JJ). They would have had a shot if they had done this. Now there is a gaping hole scoring lane open right down the middle. LeBron,Bosh, and Wade will expose it… A lot.

Za Za is freaking just useless. 3 points & 2 rebounds in 20 minutes. And gives up 16 points. Yeah, a real winner !!!

Is Biedrins the answer ? Can he do what needs be done?

I remember Steve Jackson making comments about Don Nelson and then he was gone pretty quick. Biedrens now making comments about Don Nelson. I think I’d be on the phone to GS.

robdawg right about Pachulia…He has been useless…..But if he has been working on his weaknesses (basically being slow and clumsy with absolutely no hands), things could be different.

robdawg wrong about Miami. First Spoelstra will go….Wade will freak out for some inexplainable reason and Bosh and Lebron will start exchanging looks. Lebron was the self-styled “king” in Cleveland, but will referees continue to call fouls against his defenders in critical situations? Will Lebron continue to get his extra “hop” on the way to the basket? I seem to remember Wade palming the ball a lot. All this on the same team, play after play, and the rest of the league is going to demand they play like everybody else……within some framework of rules.

You heard it here first….No championship for Miami!

I am starting to get curious about Larry Drew…….
