With Shaq off to Boston here’s a quick epilogue as it relates to the Hawks:
I’ve been told that Atlanta wouldn’t budge on giving Shaq a starting nod over Al, who is after all still only 24-years old and an All-Star. Shaq believes he will get the starting nod over Jermaine O’Neal in Boston as Kendrick Perkins rehabs from his knee injury.
Atlanta also wasn’t willing to pay Shaq more than the minimum and that was a sticking point for him. He didn’t want to sign for the minimum when the Hawks had their bi-annual and mid-level exceptions available because of the perception that would create–as in the Hawks could have paid him more but didn’t. That’s not the case with Boston, which had neither of those exceptions and so could only give him the minimum.
The big guy still has his pride.
The Hawks thought Shaq could help them and would be a good risk at the minimum salary despite his history of negatively effecting locker rooms and tending not to respect coaches who aren’t Phil Jackson or Pat Riley. It could have been a potential headache for L.D., who already has a lot to deal with in his first gig as a head coach.
So that’s that. . . .
The Hawks still are in the market for a center (I’ve still heard nothing to indicate they are seeking a wing) and they have veterans Francisco Elson, Brian Skinner and Josh Boone on their radar. Not so much Kwame Brown, who is thought to still be seeking a deal for more than the vet minimum.
Beyond those options, I also could see the Hawks waiting to see if any centers shake free as teams buy out vets when training camps open. They also might consider bringing some young center prospects to camp and give them a month to earn the 13th roster spot. There is some interest in Garrett Siler but he’s got a lot to prove after a bad showing at Summer League.
There’s still about two months until camp opens so there’s still time for moves to be made. But that 13th roster spot will remain open for now.
– Hawks assistant GM Dave Pendergraft has emerged as an early candidate to become Denver’s top basketball executive. Pendergraft also is one of several candidates for Phoenix’s GM job.
The Nuggets let go of VP of basketball ops Mark Warkentein earlier this week.

No malice intended. I’m no Fox watcher either. However, I think this is less about Fox Network and more about sensationalizing rumors. It could have been Fox, ESPN etc.
Though this maybe a bogus opinionated story produced by a writer, the primary mission is accomplished. That is to highlight and advance the perception that the Hawks organization is clueless and not yet ready for prime time.

Grandad and Big Ray – my Josh Smith to Karl Malone comparison is for the future – I said in his 30’s, when he fills out (he’s only 24 now) his game will look more like Malone than the High-Wire act we know now – it’s called “age”!
I’m still not sure why you make a natural 4 into a 3 – but if Josh can hit the jumper, then I’m game.
Earlier today I said Marvin’s best position is coming off the bench at either Forward spot.
Yesterday, I said ZaZa could start for many NBA teams, and was highly regarded in NBA circles.
If rotoworld is correct – looks like I made some pretty good assessmnets – we will see how it pans out.

“Stats don’t equal facts kid.I post nothing but facts son you rely on stats.”
The funny thing about all this is that I go out of my way to say that stats don’t tell the whole story over and over again on this blog. In fact I did that like two pages ago. When you said Shaq declined worse than other comparable centers, far from being a fact, it was flat-out wrong and me and northcyde categorically called you out on it. It’s not a big deal — everyone on this blog, including myself, post some lies here and there — but the rest of us don’t resort to middle school insults when we post some dumb sh-t. Grow up nephew.

Shaq not coming here..that’s far. There are other possible centers out there that can give you a good 12 to 15 mins such as an Earl Barron. He’s young and is 7ft or someone from the D League. I would like an idea of trading Marvin, ZaZa and a pick for Iguodala or can make the money work to add the 3pt shooting of Kapano as well. Both teams and players benefit from this. 76ers get a younger SF to play with Evan Turner and a scrappy C while Marvin gets out of the shadow of the non-drafting of CP3. Hawks get more an athletic and good defensive SF who can create his own shot when defenses key on Joe or Jamal.

Your original statement was Josh did not possess

Why do you keep alluding to the fact that Josh

Woodson made him a [4].
Is that your only basis for argument.
So far, all you have said is “jump shot”.
I’ve posed several other skills & ways Josh

You would be well served to gain an understanding

Please believe me when I say that I did not mean

Best trade scenario that I can come up with for a new look Hawks.
PT 1:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=29ov94r
Hawks get Andris Biedrins via Golden State and Mo Williams via Cleveland
Golden State get Marvin Williams and Mo Evans from Hawks
Cleveland gets Zaza and Mike Bibby from Hawks
Part 2:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=27oagvg
Hawks trade Jamal Crawford and 2nd rd pick if necessary to Indiana for Mike Dunleavy Jr.
New Team
1 Jeff Teague/Mo Williams
2 Joe Johnson/Jordan Crawford
3 Josh Smith/Mike Dunleavy Jr./Carney
4 Al Horford/Josh Powell
5 Andris Biedrins/Boone
Sign Josh Boone and Rodney Carney to fill roster out.
This not only gives you a 6″11 mobile, athletic C who has averaged a double-double in his last 2 full years in Biedrins, it also gives you a guy that made the all-star team a couple of years ago at PG in Mo Williams. More importantly to the ASG the salaries would be the same next year with this squad as they would be with the current squad which would allow for them to resign Al without going into luxury next summer.

He also said that PF is the position he has played all his life and that he is sure that going back to it will make him a better player.
About the Miami Heat he said that is just another team they will play 4 games,2 in Atlanta and 2 in Miami(Business as usual)and that in order to advance in the Playoffs they have to do a better job than last year in playing as a team.

moving a player who produces offensively and defensively near the rim, further from the rim, to accommodate a player who’s skill set suits his current position to the tune of an all-star appearance.. smh. i can understand mixing the rotation even lineups (never saw that from Woodson) here and there depending on opponent; but starting ZaZa who’s forgotten how to rebound the ball before it touches the floor and blocks nothing…
i just dont get what we’re doing this off-season.

The only thing Shaq could teach AHorford and JSmith about holding their ground in the post would be how they need to weigh close to 400lbs. If other teams add players to their roster, fans automatically feel they’ve improved, but not the Hawks. If other teams add a new HC, along with new OFF/DEF schemes and philosophy, and fans automatically feel that team has improved, but not the Hawks.
If the Hawks bring back their 10 core players from last yrs team that increased its annual win total and its Eastern Conference seeding over the previous yr, rather than signing a bunch of FA’s, they’re not considered as good as other teams that return their core players. Over the last 3yrs, these same core of Hawk players have finished ahead of every team fans and so called experts have rated higher.
The Hawks have added 2 new players, JPowell, JoCrawford, a new HC, a DEF assistant, a new OFF and DEF, and will possibly add Sy, and our fans still can’t see any way this team has improved. Shaq has been a starter on the last 2 teams he’s played for, and he did improve a single one, nor did either come close to winning a title. In fact, last 2 teams he played on ended up worse than they were the yr before, and both sent him packing after one season. Yet, we have Hawk fans that continue to insist that as a backup, and playing fewer mins, he could have taken us over the top.

BIGDAVE-remember, it’s just certain fans that insist on making an issue of AHorford supposedly BEING UNDERSIZED, OR PLAYING OUT OF POSITION, OR BEING A NATURAL PF. They are the ones coming up with all of these trade scenario’s and player position switches that are designed to create a way to move him to PF.
Two of the NBA’s best centers, AHorford and AStaudemire, both All Stars, have been classified as UNDERSIZED, PLAYING OUT OF POSITION, OR NATURAL PF’s. I’ll take an UNDERSIZED, NATURAL PF PLAYING OUT OF POSITION center that’s good enough to become an All Star, and/or All Pro, over an OVERSIZED, NATURAL CENTER that UNDERWHELMS, any day of the week with absolutely no complaints whatsoever.

So right now, according to what we have, we should still bench Marvin Williams. I would start Zaza and shift Al to PF and J Smith to SF. I hope that Smith developed some more creativity on the offense in order for him to be able to play SF, though.
Then I would have Marvin come off the bench and go to our regular offense in order to run and gun.
In other words, the front office didn’t help the Hawks this year at all. Now, it’s up to coaching. And if I was the coach, I would elevate a true center. Right now, we only have Zaza and Al. I would give Al more minutes at PF and bring Marvin off the bench. Marvin will be more of an asset getting quality minutes off the bench.

Ken S,
You think amare is a good center? I dont know who would agree with you. He is great on offense, yes. But playing with Steve Nash helps.
On defense, he is not very good, and he only rebounds when he wants to (which is not often enough).
Bigdave,
I said the same thing about Keith bogans. He reminds me of mo Evans, but for half the price.

Oh yeah .. You did say that last week? I guess when Al spoke to the
AP, he was excited about playing more time at the 4 (his natural game).
MC, do you think this means we will see Zsa Zsa stàrt more games to set the tempo, by using a Bigger line-up. That would make more sense to me, because it
moves Marvin to the bench, where he belongs.
The whole idea for me is that Marvin has not earned a starter’s role.
We get more punch from the bench on the second unit with him and Jamal playing with either Bibby or Teague. This should give the Hawks a different and better look. Some things definitely need to change ’round here.
We can’t keep rolling out the same – same and expect different outcomes.
drmaryb (*_*)
August 8th, 2010
2:22 pm
Also if Zsa Zsa is named the starter and Marvin is not?
That would be a dynamic shift of power in Atlanta, Marvin passes the ball like it’s a Hot Potato much too often and quickly, it seems like he doesn’t care to be a threat on offense – whatsoever. Maybe a bench role will force him to take more shots or drive the ball aggressively in the second unit role.
Josh was always a natural 3, before Woodson put him aþ the 4.
of course 6 years ago, the roster was completely dis-mantled and Woodson was forced to put Play-Makers on the floor with Chills and Josh.
I like this, it doesn’t mean that Al will see most of his time at the 5.
Also, with this flexibility, it gives the Coach more options with match ups
in the flow of the game. It also forces the GM to pull the trigger at the trade deadline to get Bigger players on the roster. Up until now, we can only play one way against the Bigger front courts like: L.A. Boston, Cavs, Dallas, Spurs, et.al.

Hawks get Andris Biedrins via Golden State and Mo Williams via Cleveland
Golden State get Marvin Williams and Mo Evans from Hawks
Cleveland gets Zaza and Mike Bibby from Hawks
Part 2:
Hawks trade Jamal Crawford and 2nd rd pick if necessary to Indiana for Mike Dunleavy Jr.
New Team
1 Jeff Teague/Mo Williams
2 Joe Johnson/Jordan Crawford
3 Josh Smith/Mike Dunleavy Jr./Carney
4 Al Horford/Josh Powell
5 Andris Biedrins/Boone
************************
Interesting team. Now . . . let’s see how that team looks payroll wise in 2011-12
Johnson: $18 mill
Horford: $13.3 mill ( *if signed at a max deal 5 yrs – 83 mill )
Smoove: $12.4 mill
Biendris: $9 mill
MoWilliams: $8.5 mill
Teague: $1.6 mill
JoCrawford: $1.2 mill
Total = $64 million in payroll amongst 7 players . . with 6 players left to be added at the minimum ( unless the new CBA allows teams to roll with just 12 players minimum on the roster )
So to stay under the tax, the ASG/Sund would add 6 vet minimum and minimum rookie scale contracts to fill out the roster ( if the Luxury Tax for 2011 – 12 didn’t go below 70 million )
Congrats truthspitter . . . at least your trades in 2010, are cap friendly going into 2011. You achieved that by trading an expiring contract ( Jamal ) for another expiring contract ( Dunleavy ). Whether those trades make us better or not, you have achieved the main goal of the ASG . . . STAY UNDER THE TAX.

Najeh may not like it, but I’m proud to be a “stat nerd”. Maybe if we had more stat nerds in some of these front offices, that they could make better decisions on the players they bring in.
The key to being a “stat nerd” is to NOT depend on just one stat to prove your argument or evaluate a player, but to look at multiple stats concerning that player. But on the flip side, if a player is known for doing one particular thing, and that stat shows that he doesn’t do that thing well anymore, then that’s a red flag as well.
That’s why I’m the self-proclaimed “King of Research” round here. That is my job. To provide bloggers with non-emotional, factual information concerning a player.
