Atlanta Hawks: Getaway day

There will be a blog hiatus for a couple weeks while I get away for some me time. There’s a chance I might drop in with a post if anything interesting happens with the Hawks but don’t count on that (either something interesting happening or me dropping in). Meanwhile the beat will be in the capable hands of Ken S., who will chronicle the Hawks’ attempts to pluck a center from the bargain bin.

I suspect not much will have changed with my blog people when I return. Truth-Serum will still be using his multiple identities to agree with himself that Al is a terrible defensive center. JeJe will continue to rip ASG for not letting J.J. walk and using all that cap space to SIGN FREAKIN’ LEBRON. And all of you will wonder how in the heck this squad is supposed to make a move in the East with basically the same guys suiting up.

Be easy until I get back, blog people. Remember, it’s all love and and it’s just basketball . . .

Can we trade away Mo Evans for nothing, and go under the cap enough to use our MLE? Clips could use him.

From CBS sports:

“While the Hawks have ruled out paying luxury tax to sign Shaquille O’Neal — or any other free agent, for that matter — the organization hasn’t shut the door completely on bringing Shaq to Atlanta, a person familiar with the team’s thinking told CBSSports.com. If O’Neal were to lower his asking price from the mid-level exception — starting at about $5.8 million — to the bi-annual exception of about $1.9 million, the Hawks would be interested in exploring such a signing. Atlanta would be able to pay O’Neal the bi-annual exception — or a portion of its mid-level — and avoid paying luxury tax. But the current ownership group has never paid luxury tax and doesn’t plan to begin paying it now. Also, the Hawks haven’t discussed — nor are they interested in — a sign-and-trade arrangement with the Cavs that would cost them a piece of their young core, sources say.”

I bet Shaq wont play for 10% of his previous salary. I can’t believe they expect him to sign for that…

“Powell has received interest from several teams, including Chicago, Denver, Miami and Atlanta, according to league sources.”

I the Hawks should split the 5 mil between Kwame, Craig Smith and rookie.

Also, throw in the rights of Pepsi or GladyrOut of here, just to sweeten the deal. They will never be worth $3 mill (like Anderson or 31st) in a trade away anyway. What else do we need them for?

I understand that MC needs to “stay in good” with his sources in the Hawks organization but someone in the press needs to ask some real questions about the public being lied to and how the organization is so poorly run.

This offseason offered many possibilities. We have chosen the one with the least promise. We could have had JC AND a big in the draft, instead we opted for money that will never be spent to better the team.

We have been lied to. As team is constructed right now, fans will lose interest, attendance will drop and the ASG will fail. When they fail and go away, I will be happy. I will be older because this last rebuilding process has been many years. It seems that we never simply made the right decision, we have always been left scratching our head.

The management of the Hawks sucks!

The Hawks should get the 3 oldest, but cheapest players available to fill out the roster. The objective is not to improve and win, but to simply fill out a team!

Dap01,

The writers who can ask the tough questions are the columnists (mark Bradley, for example). MC is the beat writer.

If the ASG wants to save money, why give bibby (especially at his age) a 3 year guaranteed deal? Not smart.

Why give Marvin $7.5 mil to be the 4th or 5th option? Not smart.

As for shaq, I don’t think anybody will give him the MLE. if he lowers his price, he Would be an excellent pickup for hawks.

THIS WILL BE MY LAST BLOG FOR A WHILE.I FEEL SORRY FOR ALL OF THE LOYAL HAWKS FANS WHO IF THEY WERE GMS WOULD DO THE OBVIOUS MOVES AND BRING A TEAM TO ATLANTA THAT WOULD CONTEND FOR THE TITLE BUT UNFORTUNATELY, YOU ALL HAVE TO PUT UP WITH RICK SUND WHO IS NOTHING BUT A CHEAP TIGHT FISTED LOSER WHO WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO BETTER THE TEAM. ALL HE DOES IS SIT BACK AND SMILES THEN LET OTHER TEAMS GET BETTER,LOSE PLAYERS THAT COULD HELP BRING A CHAMPIONSHIP TO ATLANTA.WELL, ITS ON YOU FANS NOW.I’M GETTING OFF HERE.I SEE ONLY MEDIOCRITY AND LOSING DOWN THE ROAD FOR THE HAWKS AS LONG AS SUND REMAIN WITH THE ORGANIZATION.WELL, GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO KEEP WISHING FOR SUND TO DO SOMETHING TO BETTER THE TEAM I DON’T SEE IT HAPPENING.HE WILL HOLD ON TO MONEY AND DO NOTHING WITH THE MONEY DOWN THE ROAD.THE MAJIC,BOSTON, MILWAUKEE, CHICAGO AND NOW MIAMI WILL ALL DRILL THE HAWKS AND FINISH AHEAD OF THEM .EVERYONE WILL BLAME LARRY DREW WHO WILL BE AT SUND’S MERCY THEN HE WILL BE FIRED.IN THE MEANTIME THE HAWKS WILL BECOME THE HAWKS OF OLD, LOSERS.ITS SAD BECAUSE HAD BILLY KNIGHT STAYED, HE WOULD HAVE DONE THE RIGHT THING. HAD HE BEEN PATIENT WITH MIKE WOODSON PLUS CONTINUED TO ADD PIECES TO THE TEAM, THE HAWKS WOULD HAVE PLAYED FOR THE TITLE THIS PAST AND UPCOMING SEASON.HE KNEW BAASKETBALL BETTER THAN SUND WILL EVER KNOW BUT HIS IMPATIENT CAUSED HE AND THE TEAM.MAYBE SOMEONE’S EYES WILL OPENED ABOUT SUND.I FEEL SORRY FOR THE MANY WHO WILL HAVE TO SUFFER FOR THE HIRING OF RICK SUND. THEY WILL CONTINUE TO BE FOOLED BY SUND’S ANTICS AND TACTICS THAT WILL LEAD TO LOSING ANFD FUSTRATIONS

“The TEAM will get my unconditional support. But I can’t defend the ownership group anymore. These guys aren’t in it to win it. The Hawks are simply their play toy hobby.”

Dude, that’s what we’ve been screaming all along. Yes, the team deserves our support all the way, even when they fell apart in the playoffs last year. But it’s the owners who get the support of our dollars. Many fans may say out loud that they blame the players, but the real predominant sentiment has to do with ownership/management. That’s why so much angst over spending for season tickets, choosing to not make the Hawks a priority, etc….

These guys have proven themselves to be what they are, and it’s unfortunate that both the fans and the team have to suffer for it.

Look, I’m not pushing Ajinca, per se.
*We need a big / don’t want to spend any money.
*He’s inexpensive
*We do not want to break up core.
*They cannot take back an expensive piece. [Dallas over cap]
*He fills our bill.
*We should be able to give up a draft pick or picks to get him.

To me it figures to be a match.

ASG, you made 3m on draft day – you said you would spend it – now Ridnour and Brad Miller are gone – So now we get Josh Powell if we’re lucky, Kwame Brown (but the Heat want him bad, to go against Howard) if we’re lucky, and Anthony Tolliver if we’re lucky. If not, looks like 38 year old Kurt Thomas, 37 year old Theo Ratliff, and our choice of Aminu or Dixon off the scrub leaque roster – wow, I’m underwhelmed. Waiting for Sund to hit a home run, hope he does…

My strategy would be to spend the $4.5 mil on 2 decent guys. And then for the 13th spot, i would give it to somebody from camp, or use it to audition somebody from the D-League.

Dont get some over the hill or over the weight vet. At least the d-leaguer will be extra motivated.

I think they should go after Anthony tolliver to be the backup PF

Details to come.
