Atlanta Hawks: Getaway day

There will be a blog hiatus for a couple weeks while I get away for some me time. There’s a chance I might drop in with a post if anything interesting happens with the Hawks but don’t count on that (either something interesting happening or me dropping in). Meanwhile the beat will be in the capable hands of Ken S., who will chronicle the Hawks’ attempts to pluck a center from the bargain bin.

I suspect not much will have changed with my blog people when I return. Truth-Serum will still be using his multiple identities to agree with himself that Al is a terrible defensive center. JeJe will continue to rip ASG for not letting J.J. walk and using all that cap space to SIGN FREAKIN’ LEBRON. And all of you will wonder how in the heck this squad is supposed to make a move in the East with basically the same guys suiting up.

Be easy until I get back, blog people. Remember, it’s all love and and it’s just basketball . . .

Najeh, the Hawks should have to do SOMETHING exciting to earn optimism. Yes, MC is right, it is just basketball. Seeing new players is fun, and taking risks, growing, and trying different things should be the natural course. There’s no way the leader of a team that got swept like that should stay, and again, what’s the worst that can happen? A “JUST BASKETBALL” team get’s worse. With that perspective, these decisions aren’t that hard: try to grow, try to build chemistry, and try new things to get there. There no harm in trying! It’s easy to be optimistic about an engaging team that wants to lay it all out there. Do you see that promise now?

Grandad,

We do have a TPE we could send to Dallas to give them cap relief. But If his salary is $1.4 mil and the TPE is for $3.7 mil, I don’t think the numbers work under salary cap rules.

Could they send us 2 players?

LMAO every Truth Serum split personality posted one after another…

Kevin Durant is quickly becoming my favorite non-Hawks player in the league.

The Najeh Davenpoop who posted at 3:32 is not me. Weirdly enough, though, he makes some good points. I was under the impression that the whole point of stealing people’s screen names was to make them look bad. Apparently this is not the case.

I would like to further highlight MCs last statement. It’s all love, and that’s what I want to see in the team. I want to see the management and players show “all love” to the game. I want to see players step out onto the court feeling blessed and grateful.

It’ll be easy to support that.

$4 million per year for Ronnie Brewer is a great deal. Raja Bell and Ronnie Brewer are going to make an impact in the playoffs this year and everyone will wonder how they were acquired for so little money. Marvin Williams makes more than both of them COMBINED.

Sund could have easily traded Marvin for Shaq by now and signed Brewer to take Marvin’s place without exceeding the luxury tax. It would be nice to have a competent front office.

Najeh;
there is truth to what you say.
However, there is a range to outlandishness.
Truth-Serum is far & away one point of the spectrum on one end.
(your welcome – TS)
However, drmaryb, myself, nc, Big Ray, and even
Sautee (for argueing with TS) could be considered outlandish.
Then there are the boring bloggers – no names, just same ol’ same ol’.
Then the uninformed, why don’t we trade Zaza for, Kobe?
I’m not certain where I would fall in your assessment of outlandishness,
but I’m the way I am in real life.
I love b-ball but I also abhore boring.
Naj – you are a most respected blogger / poster & I’m a mere neophyte.
This is not a criticism, just a response.
Post Script – TS, this is not in any way a slight on you.
If you are saying we should police ourselves during MC’s absence,
then I agree. The blog cannot deteriorate into chaos.
Thanks for your comment and I hope mine were understood & well taken.

I just realized that I have some denial about JJs contract. It’s a done deal, and with it, the exercise of throwing around hypothetical moves that would make the Hawks worth following is moot. Like someone said, we better hope he does something to get his contract voided… is Javaris Crittenton available?

The Voice of Reason

Najeh Davenpoop: I have always looked up to you and the other ICONIC bloggers for your class, intellectual stimulation and leadership on this blog.

You guys – KNOW who you are and I have recently named an incomplete list that came to mind a couple weeks back.
To the Ire of some and deservedly so. other(s)? – not so much

But, hey … I’m just a bench player and I like my role:

1.To keep my comments lite, respectful to the team and HC and entertaining.
(For Entertainment Purposes Only)

2.I will light into those who attack my character -vs- my irrelevant opinions.
(Remember, I fight dirty!). LOL

3. Bring some medical insight about injuries where I can, to add to the convo.
(Doc helps me out there.)

4. To learn about all the Stats, Facts, Capology and Tradeology.
(I’m way to lazy to research)

5. To have healthy and thoughtful communications about the Hawks and the NBA.

6. To have FUN!

#6 has been pretty tough lately, NOT because of the Hawks and FA.
But, because of The Blog Bully who posts under 35 names and thinks it’s
Ok to disrespect people and posts under their I’d’s as well to inflame others and
basically to terrorize the good blog citizens and their peers.

Honestly, there is NO fun in that! It is immature, evil and cancerous –
I render it intolerable and therefore – unacceptable!

In closing, Thank You Mr. Davenpoop for initiating this dialogue -

“It’s easy to be optimistic about an engaging team that wants to lay it all out there. Do you see that promise now?….”

Maybe. i just ask that people try and have perspective. That, I have seen more of today than in a while.

I would just like to see less people concerned with screen names, stealing handles and spitting venom for the sake of being venomous and more concerned with staying on task.

At a time where this forum and franchise needs more paying attention than ever. Agree or disagree, just keeping perspective is all I ask. The other stuff, name calling, “acknowledge my character on this blog” stuff kills topic. Its more a personal rant than anything.

I don’t understand apparently. We have about $65 million committed, the luxary cap starts at $70 million a difference of 4 to 5 million. We also have the exception fromt the childress trade that postones the luxary tax up by an additional 3+ million which means about $73 million.

Why can’t we sign a free agent to a $5.5 MLE and still have a couple of million to play with?

Dap01,

The luxury tax is not affected by the TPE. it will still be $70 mil.

Najeh,

In hindsight, the hawks could have let Marvin be unrestricted this offseason (by not giving him a deal last season). Especially since there would be lots of guys available this summer.

Or they could have let the market set his price last season. There were not many teams under the cap who would have paid Marvin $7.5 mil to their starting SF.

But I Think rick overpaid, because he had to know Marvin would be a 4th or 5th option.

Well, we have around 4M and three spots to fill: All, I ask is that we choose the players that fit the team’s personaliy, L.D.’s new schemes on O & D, and the new budget. We are NOT that far off at 53 wins, we just need to UPGRADE from here. No redundant players, but some fresh skills:

Kurt Thomas – an enforcer.
Matt Barnes – a defender on the perimeter (I’m sure he’s gone now tho.)
Ishmael Smith? – a PG (Houston’s SL player – I like him a lot)

No more: West, Collins or Joe Smith please.

I think Bynum and Boone would be good fits and i agree with asg, sund and L.D. The hawks do have one of the best starting five in the nba.The hawks basically ran nothing but iso’s on offense and won 53 games. The hawks played very limited defense all season and playoffs and made it to the second round. This line-up is good not great. And if L.D. is half the coach he say he is on offense and can get these guys to play solid defense They can be a top team in the nba.Yes the hawks are cheap but man their talent is deep. And i garuntee this season there won’t be no 2nd round sweep.

My thing is . . . they could’ve completely shot down that rumor last week, by simply contacting MC directly, and saying that they either had no interest in Shaq, or was flat out not going to pay even the MLE for him. Why even let the fan base believe that they were even considering it?

Just another case of bad PR by the ASG.

I guess the intention now, is to maybe give a contract to Siler ( that is, if Miami doesn’t snatch the dude up first ). It’s disheartening to see them simply not do anything but try to save as much money as they can. A guy like Brad Miller sure in the hell isn’t going to excite anybody, especially after the season he had in Chicago last year.

Just don’t try to sell us on some scrub big man, as someone who can help us. Don’t sell us that ish like you tried to do with Jason Collins and Joe Smith.

We had one of the worst benches out of all the playoff teams last year, and they do nothing to try to significantly upgrade it?

We have a damn superpower spring up overnight IN OUR OWN DIVISION, and they don’t even blink?

The TEAM will get my unconditional support. But I can’t defend the ownership group anymore. These guys aren’t in it to win it. The Hawks are simply their play toy hobby.

The Hawks won’t trade Marvin for Shaq because “they have no interest in trading one of their starters.”

Did I miss where the young Hawks pushed the champions to the brink in the NBA Finals? Because SURELY Sund wouldn’t be averse to trading a player that has shown marginal passion for the game on a team that was historically disgraced in a sweep.

Right?

Im still OK with what Sund & ASG are doing..they are not trading a starter for a wasted, 38yo, over-the-hill player who wants to call the shots, they are keeping their core together, (a core that indeed won them 53 games with all but 1 offensive play), they still have their MLE and TPE. And who is to say Sund havent been reaching out to Matt Barnes, Brewer, Brad Miller, Haywood, and others but wanted more money that we couldnt give them due to lack of funds..and lets not go back through the high priced JJ story..they did what they had to do to keep their ’superstar’.

You can reasonably reject Shaq for Marvin, but only for doubt in Shaq and his salary demands, not for the fear of losing Marvin. We HAVE to try something new, and get some different personalities on this team. Does Marvin show the passion that deserves a starting spot for the next four years?

Maybe we could have used him to get Al Jefferson, all I know is that a management group that actually cared would have been spurred to action after this year’s playoffs.
