Atlanta Hawks: Getaway day

There will be a blog hiatus for a couple weeks while I get away for some me time. There’s a chance I might drop in with a post if anything interesting happens with the Hawks but don’t count on that (either something interesting happening or me dropping in). Meanwhile the beat will be in the capable hands of Ken S., who will chronicle the Hawks’ attempts to pluck a center from the bargain bin.

I suspect not much will have changed with my blog people when I return. Truth-Serum will still be using his multiple identities to agree with himself that Al is a terrible defensive center. JeJe will continue to rip ASG for not letting J.J. walk and using all that cap space to SIGN FREAKIN’ LEBRON. And all of you will wonder how in the heck this squad is supposed to make a move in the East with basically the same guys suiting up.

Be easy until I get back, blog people. Remember, it’s all love and and it’s just basketball . . .

O’brien-I guess it is a draw Marvin has his upsides and downsides and Barnes has his.Still i like Marvin as a scoring threat over Barnes.Just like Odom’s play irritate Lakers fans Marvins up and down performances will continue to frustrate hawks fans.

I’m still hoping the Hawks will go after Kirk Hinrich…Bibby, Evans & a draft pick should do it (Wiz get shorter, cheaper contracts and a pick for the future but still have vets to play with Wall).

Sacramento is looking for a PG that can shoot from outside…They are under the cap and could absorb Bibby’s contract without sending anything back in return…I’d send Bibby, cash & draft picks to Sac-town just to get rid of Bibby and free up space under the luxury tax threshold…Its a long shot, but worth a try…Good luck Sund.

O’Brien I hear you. Again, Im waiting for a link or bibliography or something re-post of an article something other than a haters interpretation or uncorroborated tales. 80% of the blogs here are just a persons opinion or interpretation of whats taking or taken place. Very few offer facts or evidence to support their claims.

For example, read just this page. How many times do you see claims about woodson or teague or Horford where the writer is making a debasing statement perjuring the person with out a link or an qualified article to support his statement?

STEVE , FRIED CHICKEN, RUFUS AND VAVA or the only ones who offer substanial reference and documentation for their positions.

For the most part the rest Just sowed their opinions. Nothing wrong with that, It just that opinions often get misconstrued with reality.

One poster said the hawks matched the lakers for offense and defense which is not true. While woodsons team did show as much offensive out put as the lakers defensively we could not match them in the middle.

Here is the team stats last year defensively

http://www.nba.com/statistics/sortable_team_statistics/sortable2.html?cnf=1&prd=1

Now heres an example of someone who claims to know what was in Woodson’s mind and offered it as evidence to support his premise.

“Woodson felt he had to rely on the switching DEF to allow him to play extended mins.”

My conclusion is, I find better case presentations on other sites. In fact, if the 80% (guestamation) had to be responsible for what the say much of the hate on this site would cease and the level of intelligence would go up.

Wow! That’s nice to say – SYSTEM!
Aye … I am a die hard Mr. Woodson and I for one, cried when he left.
However, I did have ONE BIG complaint about his Team Identity & lack of well defined roles for the Team
Players within a SYSTEM of Offense and Defense.

Like S.A., Utah, Lakers do year in and out.
We all know their plays in our sleep, but they execute so methodically and machine like, to where you can’t even stop it. They SIMPLY impose their WILL upon YOU, send your dysfunctional team AWAY,
Check their lap-tops, get showered & dressed and out on a date!

Tell me, most of these players are not distracted from basketball by The Life of a NBA Star?

If you go by this, Marvin gets a grade of C defensively, when comparing him to this crop of SFs. And his grade might be even lower, when you consider that he doesn’t generate a lot of “hustle plays” like steals and blocks. I thought he was better than this actually. But come to think of it, he did have flashes in which he looked great defensively, and other days when he got lit up.

Shocked at that Durant 13.3 PER number. But then again, when he guarded Kobe in the playoffs, he did a good job on him. That guy is long as hell, and if he ever started to get a little more steals and blocks, he’ll get All-Defensive team consideration in the future.

Same situation on offense. You look at this list, and he’s probably closer to a C- in the PER department. His inability to knock down wide open jumpers this year, combined with him disappearing on the boards at times, didn’t help him any last season.

And once again . . . Durant is SCARY. OKC may be one more All-Star big man or guard away from being a major threat in the West.

I’ll say this about Iggy. That dude would be the perfect compliment to JJ here. Not only is he the slasher that this team could use, he’s also a guy who is a very good playmaker that could get a shooter like JJ, and a high flyer like Smoove, a lot of easy looks.

I’d deal Crawford + a 1st round pick for Iggy with the quickness. They’ll first see how he and Evan Turner mesh together. But if it doesn’t work out, Iggy is a guy I’d love to have on this team.

Teague – JJ – Iggy – Smoove – Horford

If Teague pans out, especially defensively, that is a DYNAMIC lineup. LOL . . JJ would have to take just about every outside shot, but that is a high octane lineup right there.

Northcyde,

Thanks for the SF stats. One thing that fans are guilty of (including me) is we base our opinions off what we see (or think we see). But sometimes, what we see is not what the numbers say it is.

Marvin is an okay defender, but he is by no means a defender like Barnes (who was #2 on the list). Yes, playing with D12 behind you does help, but to be #2 still shows what kind of defender Barnes is.

And when you factor in Barnes’ salary (reportedly $4.5 mil per year from Toronto), compared to $7.5 mil for Marvin, it’s a no-brainer. Hopefully Marvin will improve to where he was 2 seasons ago.

As for Igyy, we talked about him on the other blog a while back. I think he would fit (especially if Teague can knock down 3s), but at 4 years, $56 mil left on his deal, that would be a tough money pill to swallow. Now if we get rid of Marvin and Bibby, then that might work.

You know dat boy aint right

tony,

Marvin’s shot during the 2009-10 season was completely off because he held on too long before releasing the ball.

This 2008-09 footage shows his shot with perfect fluidity with the release coming at the exact point it should.

I think that MW has suffered from lack of confidence in his game throughout this past season and was never able to shake that off.

He may never become a player deserving of a #2 pick, however I think we can still hope that he will improve and get back to 2008-09 levels on both ends of the court.

Although I love Crawford, who seems a very nice guy, I think his presence caused more harm than benefit since it affected both Marvin and Bibby’s games dramatically, mostly on account of Woody never finding the right way to balance the shots and the playing time each one got.

Woody is a very poor “rotation manager” and I doubt that he will get any serious consideration from any quality team for a new HC opportunity.

He is a perennial Assistant Coach and soon, rather than later, he will look for a job in that capacity where I believe he can be of good value for a coaching staff since I also think he looks like a nice man.

MACARONI TONY-There are people on these blogs that are obsessed with promoting personal agendas against players like AHorford, MWilliams or JSmith. They are incapable of seeing anything positive about any of these players, and seem to focus exclusively on what they perceive as their negatives.

These MARVIN HATERS have a single minded focus on using last yrs performance as the sole representation of his entire career and his total capabilities. In Marvin’s 05-06 rookie yr, he averaged 8.5 PPG and 4.8RPG coming off the bench, and 13.1PPG and 5.3RPG in 06-07, his 1st yr as a starter. He continued his progression in 07-08 and averaged 14.8PPG and 5.7RPG, which is when the Hawks made their mid season trade for PG MBibby. It was Bibby’s acquisition that started Marvin’s annual progression into an annual regression.

Adding Flip Murray, then Jamal Crawford, and giving AHorford and JSmith more of a roll in the OFF, as well are last yrs almost total dependence on ISO’s, also contributed to Marvin’s decline. It’s not an issue of whether Marvin can do better, because he’s definitely demonstrated he can, but how much will he improve if given more opportunities.

Now we can expect the MARVIN HATERS to chime in with their typical haters BS. I think LDrew’s OFF, and OFF philosophy, will help create easier scoring opportunities for each player, rather than the old philosophy of each player having to create his own scoring opportunities using ISO’s. I think JJ’s PPG average will be about the same as last yrs, but he’ll require fewer shots to get there.

The increased efficiency of JJ, Smoove and Horford will allow Marvin more scoring opportunities. And, because JTeague can penetrate, rather than relying exclusively on jump shooting, he’ll score more from the FT line. We saw that during the Summer League, when he went to the FT line 7-8 times per gm. How many consecutive gms would we have to play before seeing Bibby go the FT line that many times?

Hitting 3pt shots is nice, but against big, strong inside teams like the Lakers and Magic, getting their bigs in foul trouble and going to the FT line is far more effective in the long run than relying on 3’s.
