Atlanta Hawks: Summer spotlight singes Teague

Not time to panic about 'Rook. (AP Photo)

Not time to panic about 'Rook. (AP Photo)

Las Vegas–One bad Summer League game, one quote about deferring to J.J. and Co., and suddenly it seems like Teague has gone from savior to suspect in the eyes of some Hawks fans.

He apparently took so much guff from fans on Twitter it prompted him to tweet: dont you hate people who cant play at all but have so much 2 say smh.” That came a couple hours after he had tweeted after he tweeted: “my bad yesterday didnt have a good one”

I guess his fans agreed with him in terms that were a little too strong for his taste. Note to Teague: If you don’t like to hear mess from fans, probably best to leave Twitter alone.

It’s only two games into summer league. No doubt Teague had a bad game Wednesday but it’s tough to judge him when he’s playing with this group, just like it was tough to judge him when he was playing sporadic minutes under Woody. Shouldn’t we hold off on making strong declarations either way?

Earlier in the week Teague said: “I am kind of looking at this like I’m a rookie.” I know what he meant but he’s not a rookie and circumstances outside of his control dictate that he and the Hawks can’t look it that way. They have to find out what they have with Teague, and fast.

“We have to,” L.D. said.

Nevertheless, the inescapable reality is that Teague is still a young player finding his way. Figuring out how he can best use his skills on a team full of guys who want the ball and how to be assertive when he’s the least accomplished Hawks starter will be a process. L.D. likened it to what Rondo went through in Boston when he was suddenly expected to run point for a veteran team looking to contend.

“I told him Rondo went through a similar situation,” Drew said. “Rondo was not a rah-rah guy. He went through a rookie period and then he had all these veterans thrown at him. Then he stepped out of the box, which is what I want [Teague] to do.”

Obviously there’s no need to panic about Teague after just a couple Vegas games. But there does seem to be a bit of a gap this week between what L.D. and Lester Conner are saying and what Teague is saying.

The coaches say this is a big week for Teague to show how he can lead the team; Teague downplays the games because he’s playing with NBA hopefuls instead of Atlanta’s vets. The coaches want Teague to direct traffic, with Conner going to far as to allow Teague to call his own plays at times; Teague said he might give the ball up to others and let them initiate the offense.

Part of the disconnect probably has to do with Teague’s personality, which Conner described as a “laid-back, cool mentality.” There were times when Teague’s relaxed approach riled Woody, who wanted him to be more serious.

L.D. wants the same. He said he’s on top of it.

“We change the environment, it will change him,” L.D. said. “That’s how I feel. That’s my job.”

It’s only July. Maybe if Teague looks good against Milwaukee tonight–he said he can’t wait to redeem himself–he will feel the love again.

I noticed teague said bibby wanted less minutes last season…..is their a strong possibility of him beating bibby out eventually as the starter….regardless of his summer league performance?

MC im glad you made this blog. I was saying earlier how some Hawks fans overreact to every situation. The kid played bad for one half in his second summer league game and it became the sky is falling the sky is falling. I think he will be fine but its going to be nights where he struggles and nights where he shines. The point of playing him is to get him to the point where he shines more than he struggles. I’m more worried about getting a big man in here than I am about Teague. People seem to forget we won 53 games last year with Mike Bibby struggling for what seemed like half the season.

MC,

Mann am I glad u wrote this blog!! I keep posting saying this is Teague’ 1st summer league, this is the time for him to make these mistakes since he never got the opportunity last year or during the season due to lack of playing time. Also he has yet to play or practice with the starters so we have yet to see how great he will look when JJ, Al Horford, & JSmoove finishes their buckets, unlike the hopefuls in this summer league. And I dont mind him speaking out on twitter, its good to let his emotions out and vet instead of keeping them in.

I’m not so concerned about a bad game as I am his laissez faire attitude. This paragraph is what concerns me the most.

“The coaches say this is a big week for Teague to show how he can lead the team; Teague downplays the games because he’s playing with NBA hopefuls instead of Atlanta’s vets. The coaches want Teague to direct traffic, with Conner going to far as to allow Teague to call his own plays at times; Teague said he might give the ball up to others and let them initiate the offense’.

Teague needs to be agressive and do what the damn coaches expect him to do. It concerns me greatly that he is making excuses about not being able to play with the regulars. What the hell did he think that he would be hookin up with JJ and smoove in summer league? A real leader takes what he’s got to work with and does the best he can and doesn’t make lame excuses. Is that fair to say?

mc, i think folks didnt react well to his lack of a, “i got to do better and protect the ball because that is my job” mentality; not his trite little, “i just might as well pass it off because that is what i will do when i play with the big boys” response. there are a lot of guys who can fill his void without the cool.

tell him it aint personal, just fans like their leaders to be accountable not cool. if he didnt get that message, please send it along to him. we all know he is a rook only because that was drilled in his head all last year. yes, we also know sitting a year on the hawks bench probably wasnt the education deron williams got from sloan in his first year. he has to understand, he is the one who has to change perception, not us as fans. geez.

On the teague subject, I cannot beleive no one has taught him how to break a press. It’s simple really. The pressure may be great but as long as you follow the fundametal press-breaking mokes you should get by them with ease.

I also fault JC2 for not staying in the backcourt in case Teague ran into trouble (which he did) Too often he was already across the timeline by the 3pt line smh. I know Drew holds PG camps in the summertime so hopefully he will addresses the issue personally. It’s somehing that every PG should’ve learned EARLY.

Yea Teague needs to stay off twitter, or just to not let it affect u. but really how he handled it was pretty well done, didn’t seem too upset. his reaction fits that laid back cool description of his personality. theres reason to worry because teague is unproven, but i liked what i saw, more than with acie, and good defense from teague will be a HUGE addition, so as long as he hustles there the offense will come hes got talent. hopefully we can mold him like boston did rondo. they MADE him the player he is. he had talent, they made him great. good luck teague.go hawks!

As far as Scrub big men go, Trading For Ryan Hollins is as low as my standards will go. NO lower than that. And he’s not that bad. If you’r suggesting anyone else who you KNOW is considred a scrub by the majority, then you obviously aren’t a Hawks fan. Why should we pick up trash? “Bean pole” Joe smith and “Hamburger Helper” Collins weren’t enough for you? I’m not even going to get started on RandMo. It’s just too pathetic at this point.

Re Summerleague: I do like Hendrix, he’s Grimey. Augustin’s hustle makes me respect him. It’s become apparent that Physicality/intensity easily neutralizes A. Aminu. He’s just a transition Big. We need more than that.

Summer league is a time to work on the deficiencies of your game. Not only that, but I’m concerned that the bigger issue is that he and RandMo are the only ones who are familiar with the offense. How can he do well if nobody knows the “O” and he’s supposed to run point.

It’s only Summer league. This team has done a disservice to young PG’s during recent history. It’s time to stand-up next to this young man and allow him to grow. Mike Bibby done found all his acorns. Let this young fella get his……….

What’s the difference between someone who feels a certain way but covers it up by using the complete opposite, for example, someone is freezing cold but say they are fine. Well, all Teague is doing is saying how he feels w/o covering it up like others do like Bibby. He knew very well that he is washed-up but u will never hear him say it. And I like how JJ stuck to his guns about how he felt at the time about the fans, yeah it was hurtful for the fans, but he stayed on pace with how he felt…so big up to Teague!!

Oh and also, whats the difference in what LeBron did. Did he not work with what he had and tried to make the best out of it?? Where did it take him? Straight to Miami where he got tired of playing with the scubbs and wanted to play with quality players. Well, isnt that all what Teague is saying? He has yet to play with the quality players on his team since he has been in the league.

I like Teague, he just needs to:

1) Improve his on ball defense. He needs to get down in a better “traditional” defensive stance and move his feet. Even though this is summer league these are NBA caliber guards they are FAST he needs to back off and give them a step (or a cushon).

2) Learn to break the press. As the Starting PG he WILL be the primary ball handler /facilitator. HE decides where the points are going to come from, not Joe. Joe just needs to catch and shoot until we’re DEEP in the 4th qtr. Not before then. Otherwise the offense will DEFINETLY stagnate. We’ve seen it the past 5yrs.

3) Be more vocal. PG’s have to be leaders by trade is some form or fashon.

4) Have confidence is his shooting stroke. It does need a little tweaking but it works and it’s not terrible. When the oppourtunity arises, he needs to keep the defense honest and LET IT FLY. It’s better than Rondo’s anyday. Just telling it like it is.

5) Stop reaching on defense. He got in foul trouble last season for that. It’s good to take some chances, but once the regular season starts and he is going head to head with All-Star PG’s he’s not going to get away with that. He will either get blown past or get whistled for a foul. He just needs to keep his man in fron of him and apply heavy pressure without fouling. He has an extremely long wingspan for a PG so he needs to use it to bother his defenders (without gambling so much).

That is all.

Grandad, It didn’t seem to bother JC2 that much.

Teague was thinking TOO MUCH against A LOT of one man presses. NOT EVEN DOUBLE-TEAMS! He should know how to handle that in his sleep. He seemed indecesive. He seems to have aversion to turning his back to his defender and backing the ball up the court. He constantly tried to face up and sometimes even cross his defender over to break the press. That’s NOT how it’s done (against top the 600 basketball players in the world? Out of hundreds of millions who play the game? It’s not gonna work).

I’m impressed with what I’ve seen so far, and even some of the turnovers can’t be blamed on him and have to be put into the hands of the other players on the team. Jeff Teague is going to be a serious piece in our core going forward, and he’s got the talent to play with this group of guys we have assembled. I have no serious expectations of winning in SL with this group he’s got around him right now, rather I’m just watching his execution and hoping to see some flashes of greatness from him and Jordan Crawford over the next few games.

Man, the only thing that bothers me is that Teague is playing carelessly and is acting like this doesn’t matter, that this is like a practice. The only problem is, he’s the only one in summer league acting like that. everyone else is playing their butts off. He needs to pay his butt off, otherwise what’s the point of him even being in there? He’s playing like a scrub, granted he’s playing with scrubs, but Jordan Crawford looks great. Teague is playing lackadaisical, and I don’t blame fans for being discouraged by that, this team has a lot riding on Jeff Teague

This is another sad episode in the Atlanta Hawks collapse that is about to unfold this season when second year backup PG Jeff Teague is getting showed up by scrubs while you have real rookies like John Wall, Bledsoe, Cousins and even our own Jordan Crawford playing like sophomores with the same lack of team talent as the Hawks. I respect the fact that LD is trying to give him confidence while comparing his struggles to Rondo but Rondo had the REAL support of a championship coach & team behind him. SMDH @ Teague How can you be the future of a team when you can’t even dribble past half court against scrubs without getting rip? From the look of these two miserable games in summer league, it seems Teague is one who can’t play.

I think I was with the majority in thinking that Woody stunted Teague’s growth a little. He wasn’t allowed to make mistakes without getting yanked, that’s if he was even allowed in the game. That brings us to the present. What I don’t want from Teague is the feeling of entitlement. The whole “ho hum” attitude has to go. He needs to come in with his hard hat on. LD needs to let him know that even though he’s the de facto starter, that can change in a heartbeat. He could even possibly make JC2 and Teague duke it out for a starting role. I know they don’t play the same position, but my point is he has to earn his playing time. If not, he’ll find himself getting less PT than Marvin. I am sooooooooooo hoping Teague turns into a Rondo story WITH a jumpshot but the difference I see is attitude. Doc and Rondo butted heads because Rondo was a know-it-all. Rondo thought he knew it all because he was a student of the game. He studied tape. He asked questions. He did all that and he still wasn’t given the keys to the team until Doc was confident that he could handle it. The Celtics made it as far as they did in the playoffs on the coat tail of Rondo. Bottom line is Teague needs to get to work and don’t be complacent.
