Atlanta Hawks: Summer skid stopped

Hawks 83, Bucks 60

Box Score

Las Vegas– The Hawks ended their two-game summer skid with an 83-60 W against the Bucks. It wasn’t a thing of beauty offensively but it definitely was an impressive defensive effort. “We told them no layups,” said Lester Conner. “We told them if somebody goes by you, you are coming out of the game.”

Richard Hendrix replaced RandMo in the starting lineup. “No reflection on Randolph,” Conner said. “It’s just that starting unit was getting us in bad holes. They were chasing us tonight.”

– Tough offensive night for JC2 but he really worked on defense. He fought through screens and challenged everything. The Hawks can use as many guys as they can get who will do that. “If your shot is not falling, you have to do something else to impact the game,” Crawford said.

– Crawford was just 3 of 12 from the field, including 0 for 2 on 3-pointers. He just didn’t have it from the start. Said Conne: “He came out and shot a bad 3, and we told him, ‘Hey, we are going to get you some shots. Don’t worry about that, just keep focusing on the defense.’ ”

– It was a good sign that even with his troubles scoring Crawford kept attacking. He’s a relentless rookie. “He’s raw but he seems to get it done,” Conner said. “It’s going to be fun to watch Jamal Crawford and Jordan Crawford at the same time out there because they have similar attack modes.”

Teague bounced back from the poor game against the Spurs. He had 13 points, five assists and three turnovers. “I was trying to play my game,” he said. “Yesterday I was too casual and had the turnovers. I was trying to be aggressive and get into the lane. I knew if I did that, it would open up a lot of things.”

– Teague was really under control while driving to the basket. His quickness gets him into the lane and his leaping ability allows him to finish. Neither will be as easy once he plays against NBA squads but you can see the potential.

– Conner still wants to see Teague be more aggressive: “He ran the team pretty well. He made some good decisions. We are still looking for him to demand the ball more. Sometimes he can drift up and let someone else handle it and then we are all out of kilter.”

– Teague said it was one fan on Twitter talking about him getting outplayed by a D-Leaguer that got him riled up. He said he’s staying away from Twitter from now on.

– While Atlanta’s defensive pressure pretty much reduced Milwaukee to passing around the perimeter until late in the shot clock, the Hawks went hard to the rack. They were rewarded with 30 free-throw attempts vs. 10 for the Bucks. “We wanted to be the aggressor,” Crawford said. “I think that’s the reason why we won.”

– Hendrix is looking like a vet camp invite to me. He’s tough to handle in the post. But he’s not a good leaper and doesn’t use his body as well as he could to clear out space for rebounds. Hendrix has just eight total rebounds in 59 minutes. “He’s got some skills down there on the block but he tries to rebound with one arm,” Conner said. “He wasn’t coming up with enough rebounds. But overall he’s a big body and you need guys like that in this league.”

Pape Sy (Achilles’) was scratched for the second straight game.

– There’s nothing to the rumors about a Shaq-for-Marvin sign-and-trade being close to going down. It seems an Atlanta radio station reported “unconfirmed rumors” that were the same unconfirmed rumors that were out there yesterday and had already been shot down. A Cleveland radio station picked up the Atlanta station’s rumors, and then the Atlanta station started citing the Cleveland station. This circular, inaccurate reporting all led to one of the best tweets of all time.

– Well, blog people, I’m flying out of Vegas tonight and start vacation tomorrow. Family reunion in Chicago, followed by a few days back home in Louisville, then back to Vegas for a real vacation, and then some downtime in the A.

Good to see the team put up a W. Good to hear we’ve got some hungry kids fighting for a spot on the team. Teague does need some fuel for his fire. He needs to push hard to be the best he can be. We need a floor general, we’ve been searching since we let JTO go years back, maybe even since Mookie & Doc. It won’t happen overnight. I’m rooting for him 100%. Just give 100% JT, all else will follow.

MC – what are the rest of the players doing this summer? I got bashed a few times prior when I asked, but surely our players have plans. Any interviews or comments about the upcoming season? Any news on specific skills or coaches our players are working on/with?

Still not on the Shaq train, unless it only involves cash to sign him. We need real solid pieces to lose Marvin, not Shaq. Barnes to announce tomorrow…or today depending on how you look at it. Says it’s a surprise.

@ Najeh….lmao…you are too funny!! I’m glad that Teague looked better, but i must say that I am sold on Jordan Crawford. He will contribute greatly to the hawks. He has taken great shots even if they haven’t went down. As for Hendrix, he just may be that 13th man on the bench, then again, if he makes the team, he may move up a little further. i am impressed with this game thus far. Go Hawks!!

“If your shot is not falling, you have to do something else to impact the game,” Crawford said.

Jordan gets it. That’s the mentality you HAVE to have in this league.

“Yesterday I was too casual and had the turnovers. I was trying to be aggressive and get into the lane. I knew if I did that, it would open up a lot of things.”

Glad to see you learn from your mistake Jeff.

Since we’re going all cheap, let’s drop RandMo and give Richard Hendrix the job. He’ll only cost around $800,000, and he won’t be a threat to foul out every time he hits the floor.

As far as Teague goes, he’ll get plenty of pushing in training camp and in the preseason. Bibby may be well past his prime, but he’s not going to let his minutes go quietly in camp. That, and Jordan Crawford wants to play. If Jeff gets lackadaisical again, it will cost him game time…period.

Well, hawks fan in new orleans just said it, what about big centers? we won’t do nothing in playoffs without a true legit center. Also, Sund as a GM has proven he can’t assemble a championship contender, just look at his previous stops to verify this statement. He is a journeyman GM. The hawks ASG should sell right now, look what Golden State just sold for $450 Million, get out of the way ASG and sell out.

Big Ray,

I think we need a third string PG who is faster and more pesky than Bibby and who will push Teague to his maximum during practice.

Regardless of what Bibby may want to do in practice, the fact is that Teague will blow by him 90% of the times in practice without even using half of his speed.

Also, I think Teague must be aware that there will be someone breathing down his neck fighting for an opportunity.

Consequently, I would even take my chances with an underprivileged PG prospect that fits the above mold. Someone exactly as Jerrels who gave Teague fits on both ends.

That would allow the Hawks to have always in practice someone giving Teague a good run for his money AND for him to realize that although LD has bestowed upon him the responsibility of running the PG slot the distance between being a draft pick with a job and being a fringe player out of this league or struggling is quite small.

With the way our off-season has gone, I think the best pickup for the Hawks has been our assistant coach Lester Connor.

“We told them no layups,” said Lester Conner. “We told them if somebody goes by you, you are coming out of the game.”

That sounds similar to what Larry Drew said (guard your man or else). But it will be interesting to see how our vets respond to the challenge.

vava,

Agreed. Bring in another PG who is hungry for the opportunity that Teague is getting. Someone who even if he is not that good offensively, he is willing to be a dog on defense. Is there a Mario West PG out there though?

Javaris would most likely come cheap. He is under pressure to prove to someone he’s a good kid. Did he spend enough time in GT to make him feel like he’s at home with his family watching? Decent idea of a PG on the cheap.

Javaris is from the ATL. He played AAU with Josh, Randmo and D. Howard. I remember him being interviewed after he was drafted by the Lakers and he said how upset he was that his hometown Hawks took A.C. Law over him. They said Law was a better shooter. He’s on the cheap now and has alot to prove. Even if he doesnt start or get much playing time, just having him here will give us depth, talent and really push Teague everyday.

McGee would be nice, but very expensive. Potentially worth trading for.

If Conner and Drew can stick that philosophy we’ll win 60 games this season. Market that slogan, sell Jersey’s and we’ll look like the Chinese snapping up Yao and Yi jerseys!

I’m good with Barnes, but condereing ASG isn’t trying to go over the LT that last player would have to be a trade so they can use the 2.9m TA. Split that MLE between Javaris and Kwame and make good on the TA.

Attitude or not, I would like to see Allen Iverson wearing a hawks uniform next year. He can score and is cheap. Made $625,000 last year.
Give Aminu a chance to earn a spot $650,000 or so. that leaves 3 million left to sign Brad Miller.

Centers would be Horford, ZaZa and Brad Miller

Ant – the Celtics signed 3 guys who had given blood, sweat and tears for their teams for too long w/o support. They were respected, older veterans at the end of their careers when Allen and Garnett signed.

Folks just see Lebron and Wade as sellouts. Bosh has been suspect since ditching Tech early after doing nothing. They just don’t appear to care all the time. Wade is definitely just in it for himself.

Garnett’s heart is one of a kind! No one will question it.

@MC, the way you have been churning out blogs…I would say you could use some R & R…nothing like hanging out with the family and catching up on good times…have great time…you certainly earned it.

@O’Brien, definitely agree on Connor…I’m liking everything I’m hearing from him. I like that the fact that he has high expectation for every player that steps on the floor. I like his aggressive style of play on defense. LD and Connor appear to be a great complement to one another.

We should definitely hold on to Marvin until LD and Connor gets a chance to work with him. He could be one of the most improved players on the team next season.

@Big Play Ray, ditto on replacing RandMo with Hendrix, I would also like to see Aminu make the squad he seems like a keep too.

Iverson? Not then, not now! Shaq, Iverson and T-Mac would do wonders for our team chemistry and professionalism. What a joke each would all be to this city and team. Yes you might sell jersey’s to folks who aren’t in the know, but only for one season as we self distruct!

They’re like drugs – JUST SAY NO!
