Atlanta Hawks: Are you starvin’ to send away Marvin?

Las Vegas–I know my blog people have been trying to trade Marvin (and Bibby) with every conceivable and inconceivable permutation of fantasy deals. My favorite thing is when the proposals go like this: “Marvin and Bibby are terrible and their contracts are burdens. The Hawks should trade them for (fill in the blank with better players with more reasonable contracts).”

So do you want Marvin gone so badly that you’d swap him for 38-year old Shaq as a two-year-rental-at-most off the bench? David Aldridge reports that the Cavs are dangling Shaq in a sign-and-trade proposal for Marvin. Since the Hawks could just sign Shaq using the mid-level exception if they want him (which still isn’t certain) the Cavs presumably are counting on Atlanta’s desire to shed Marvin’s contract as the primary motivation for a trade.

Assuming Shaq gets the two-year deal he wants, Atlanta’s savings would total the difference between their salaries over the next two seasons plus the final two seasons of Marvin’s deal (assuming he exercises his option year)

For 2010-11, the Hawks’ savings would be the difference between the $6.7 million owed Marvin and Shaq’s new salary. For 2011-12, the savings would be Marvin’s $7.5 million salary minus Shaq’s salary. Shaq and Marvin would both be off the books in 2012-13, when Marvin makes $8.3 million, and the Hawks wouldn’t be on the hook for Marvin’s $7.5 million option in 2013-14.

Since this is all premature talk at this point, I won’t get into how the Hawks would go about replacing Marvin in the lineup. The Hawks still aren’t sure if Shaq would be a good fit even if he is willing to take less than the mid-level. Also, Marvin still has support within the organization, with the hope that L.D.’s new system will make a big difference in his production.

As for Aldridge’s contention that the Hawks aren’t willing to pay much more than the minimum due to “budget limitations,” all I can tell you is that everything I’ve heard suggests they are willing to exceed the luxury-tax threshold for the right player(s). I get the feeling that player isn’t Shaq.

If Jamal plays like Jamal, and JJ plays like JJ, where is drew supposed to find minutes for JC2?

The minutes are not there unless somebody gets hurt.

It’s not the fact people are putting up points in summer league, it’s the skill set people bring.

In JC2’s case, the kid can shoot.
He has range.

That’s not something that you have to *worry* about translating.

Defensively, he’s gonna have to step up to the challenge.

But, the kid is gifted offensively. It’s not just summer league, because the kid was doing this in college. He has a solid all-around offensive game.

OBRIEN-Which of Marvin’s numbers are you expecting Matt Barnes to duplicate? Matt’s best yr in his 7yr career was in 08 when he played with SNash in Phoenix. His numbers that yr were: 27MPG, 10.2PPG, 5.4RPG, 2.8APG, with a .423FG%. Now compare MBarnes best production in 08 to Marvins worst production as a starter in 09. MARVIN: 30.5MPG, 10.1PPG, 5.1RPG, 1.1APG, with a .455FG%.

MBarnes has had the benefit of playing with PG Steve Nash, a 2 time MVP and future HOFer, and PG JNelson, an All Star. Unfortunately, Marvin has had to play with career backup PG’s like TLue, AJohnson and RIvey, as well as a rapidly declining MBibby. But, if Marvin is traded, I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with MBarnes.

It is so easy to get Hawks fans worked up. If this is true, all it says is the Cavs made an offer. Does not mean the ASG will do it. You trade Marvin, then you have to find a quality 3 that can defend LeBron. If the team has a chance of signing Shaq straight up, why give up Marvin?

Happy to see Marvin get some blog love at last after two steady years of bashing. I really believe he will flourish with coach Drew who said it as much: Marvin had no defined role on the team.

LeBron really messed up the Cavs, badly. Now the Cavs are scrambling. This ESPN article says it all.

What happened to them good ole days when it was all about beating the best? And not joining the best to form a mega-pride of alpha-beasts? Really curious to see how things work out in Miami.

just thought about it.. i dont wanna see marvin go.. at all.. nobody should be traded or nothin.. just peaces should be added.. domique set the franchise record with 57 wins in one season.. this team just had 53 wins.. we are already better with the adition of jordan crawford… now we just need that one big man off the bench who is better then zaza… and we would be alright.. zaza can back up josh smith at power forward.. for real
