Atlanta Hawks: Are you starvin’ to send away Marvin?

Las Vegas–I know my blog people have been trying to trade Marvin (and Bibby) with every conceivable and inconceivable permutation of fantasy deals. My favorite thing is when the proposals go like this: “Marvin and Bibby are terrible and their contracts are burdens. The Hawks should trade them for (fill in the blank with better players with more reasonable contracts).”

So do you want Marvin gone so badly that you’d swap him for 38-year old Shaq as a two-year-rental-at-most off the bench? David Aldridge reports that the Cavs are dangling Shaq in a sign-and-trade proposal for Marvin. Since the Hawks could just sign Shaq using the mid-level exception if they want him (which still isn’t certain) the Cavs presumably are counting on Atlanta’s desire to shed Marvin’s contract as the primary motivation for a trade.

Assuming Shaq gets the two-year deal he wants, Atlanta’s savings would total the difference between their salaries over the next two seasons plus the final two seasons of Marvin’s deal (assuming he exercises his option year)

For 2010-11, the Hawks’ savings would be the difference between the $6.7 million owed Marvin and Shaq’s new salary. For 2011-12, the savings would be Marvin’s $7.5 million salary minus Shaq’s salary. Shaq and Marvin would both be off the books in 2012-13, when Marvin makes $8.3 million, and the Hawks wouldn’t be on the hook for Marvin’s $7.5 million option in 2013-14.

Since this is all premature talk at this point, I won’t get into how the Hawks would go about replacing Marvin in the lineup. The Hawks still aren’t sure if Shaq would be a good fit even if he is willing to take less than the mid-level. Also, Marvin still has support within the organization, with the hope that L.D.’s new system will make a big difference in his production.

As for Aldridge’s contention that the Hawks aren’t willing to pay much more than the minimum due to “budget limitations,” all I can tell you is that everything I’ve heard suggests they are willing to exceed the luxury-tax threshold for the right player(s). I get the feeling that player isn’t Shaq.

Ummm …. isn’t Teague supposed to be dominating? He is looking almost as – gasp- “scrubbish” as the rest of the SLers. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

One thing I would tell Teague is that when all else fails u can still Play Great Defense. Your gonna have days when things aren’t clicking but u can still play D.

1 assist 6 turnovers. I don’t care if you are a defensive improvement over Bibby. 6 TOs in a half against scrubs is unacceptable.

Trading Marvin for Shaq is essentially just dropping Marvin’s contract. ASG still believes in Mavin, so this rumor is crap. I don’t care what reports say, Shaq is not getting 8 mil per season unless its from Dallas. If he won’t take the MLE, i say screw it. He is questionable even at that price.

soooooo.. we didnt wanna get anything for childress ( a small forward ) now we not getting anything for marvin ( starting small forward )

…. uhhhh hummmmm

i use to think that sunds was smart, and all these trades that he was doing was perfectly planned out to perfection, but now im startin to believe he lucked up with jamal crawford, flip murray, and mo evens…. and even drafting al horford. ( did he do that or was that billy knight )

because he has done some suspect things also .. like sign zaza back.. and givin marvin that contract.. and getting othelo hunter instead of mario west the first time..

sunds , only way i see this working is if you are trying to start

1. jeff teague
2. jordan crawford/ jamal crawford
3. joe johnson
4. josh smith
5. al horford

as the starting line up… drew new system must be strickly pop and shoot in order for them to think about trading marvin williams for a shaq who will only play 20 min a night and only 60 somethin games..

only way the hawks should sign shaq is for the mid level, nothing more, and nothing less ( because u dont want to insult him with nothin less, i mean… it is shaq.. he does have 4 rings )

@ big dave – Marvin played great game in 5 – a game the Hawks did not win.
Marvin’s game 6 stats stats: 2 points on 1 of 5 shooting / 0 for 0 from the free throw line / 8 rebounds / 1 assist / 1 turnover 1 block / 0 steals

General Marvin info:
Marvin scored 20+ points on 5 occasions (regular season and playoffs) – Never scored 20 points on the road – Never scored 20 points back to back – only scored in double figures following a 20 point game twice. Scored 3 points or less in 3 games after he scored 20+ points. Amazing…..

On one hand, I wouldn’t do it……Shaq will just slow the Hawks offensive tempo down way too much from where it could be with Teague, JC, Josh and company

On the other hand, his name recognition will bail out ASG by putting more people in the seats (remember, they have to pay for JJ’s big-g-g contract)

Close one, but you know the saying….follow the money—-

Marvin goes. Hello Shaq!

These idiots make all these shrewd salary cut/trade moves but DON’T spend the money on FA’s.

I’ve seen about 6 guys signed since Saturday that we could’ve gotten here.

Crawford’s touch from beyond the arc will make allow him the opportunity to make an immediate impact.

That might be something Drew maybe thinking about in respects to the PG position. If JC2 can man the point, Jeff Teague may want to watch his back because Crawford 2.0 could very well possibly cut into Teague’s PT.

Anybody else think Crawford at PG is a *real* possibility?
