Las Vegas–I know my blog people have been trying to trade Marvin (and Bibby) with every conceivable and inconceivable permutation of fantasy deals. My favorite thing is when the proposals go like this: “Marvin and Bibby are terrible and their contracts are burdens. The Hawks should trade them for (fill in the blank with better players with more reasonable contracts).”
So do you want Marvin gone so badly that you’d swap him for 38-year old Shaq as a two-year-rental-at-most off the bench? David Aldridge reports that the Cavs are dangling Shaq in a sign-and-trade proposal for Marvin. Since the Hawks could just sign Shaq using the mid-level exception if they want him (which still isn’t certain) the Cavs presumably are counting on Atlanta’s desire to shed Marvin’s contract as the primary motivation for a trade.
Assuming Shaq gets the two-year deal he wants, Atlanta’s savings would total the difference between their salaries over the next two seasons plus the final two seasons of Marvin’s deal (assuming he exercises his option year)
For 2010-11, the Hawks’ savings would be the difference between the $6.7 million owed Marvin and Shaq’s new salary. For 2011-12, the savings would be Marvin’s $7.5 million salary minus Shaq’s salary. Shaq and Marvin would both be off the books in 2012-13, when Marvin makes $8.3 million, and the Hawks wouldn’t be on the hook for Marvin’s $7.5 million option in 2013-14.
Since this is all premature talk at this point, I won’t get into how the Hawks would go about replacing Marvin in the lineup. The Hawks still aren’t sure if Shaq would be a good fit even if he is willing to take less than the mid-level. Also, Marvin still has support within the organization, with the hope that L.D.’s new system will make a big difference in his production.
As for Aldridge’s contention that the Hawks aren’t willing to pay much more than the minimum due to “budget limitations,” all I can tell you is that everything I’ve heard suggests they are willing to exceed the luxury-tax threshold for the right player(s). I get the feeling that player isn’t Shaq.

@ N-Trigue….just as your name states, that’s how I feel about Marvin as well. You hit everything on the head. My thing is this…there are still a lot of FA left out there. You can get some real good bench players. If you are trading Marvin, trade him for a top of the line pg. Get at NO and see what they are willing to give up for CP3.

The Hawks should most definitely close this deal. I’m a Marvin fan and I believe that he still has a chance to grow, but even if he becomes a 20 point per game scorer, that is not what the hawks need at this time. I’m not looking at this trade as simply Marv for Shaq, but for what it could mean for the hawks in two years. By trading Marv and signing Shaq for two years the hawks would have roughly 14 million to offer a free agent(or a couple of them) at that time. I say 14 mill because bibby also comes off the books at that time. Here is a list of free agents for 2012 http://www.realgm.com/src_freeagents/2012/. Both McGee and Blatche will be free agents for Washington at this time McGee-restricted and one of them could be had. In the mean time the Hawks would not need to pick up a starting small foward. They could move Joe to the 3 and start Jamal Crawford. This would open up more playing time for Jordan Crawford with the second Unit. On some nights shaq could start when needed and josh could play the three and move Joe back to the 2. I’m telling you the hawks need to close this deal. Even if Shaq attacks up, its only a two year deal, but if it works out the possibilites are endless.

Anything to get rid of butt boy. If you’ve seen this chump on t.v. you know what I’m talking about. Who worked this guy out before the draft and thought he was a #2 pick? I’ll give Marvin this though. He sure does smack the hell out of that ball when he gets a rebound. It’s the only way he can get any attention because he SUCKS!!!

Rufus1,
“NJ just gave Travis Outlaw 35mil over 5 years and couldn’t defend a Tree, but Marvin is overpaid.”
He is a better offenvie player than Marvin, and he still recv’d less money. He is just as good or better defensively.
“Suns just gave Chillz 34mil over 5 years and he has no offense game, but Marvin is overpaid.”
He is just as good as Marvin offensively, (see the playoff series against the Celtics), much better defensively and on the boards, always shot a higher percentage from the floor than Marvin, and he can really defend 3 positions, and handle the ball like a guard, and he recv’d less tha Marv. He also was on the floor in crunch time when he played for the Hawks, not Marv, which should tell you something.
“Cavs want Marvin over Chillz(because they could have had Chillz for Shaq), but Marvin is garbage.”
This is all speculation not fact. See comments above.
NO BASKETBALL KNOWLEDGE WILL CAUSE SOMEONE (Rufus1) TO THINK THAT MARVIN WILLIAMS IS A BETTER PLAYER THAN OUTLAW OR CHILDRESS.

Raybud,
I feel what you are saying, but no team in there right mind would trade Marvin Williams for a top of the line PG. That GM would be commiting career suicide.

Marvin should have knocked down more open shots than he did. That has nothing to do with rhythm because he was still playing almost 30 MPG.
How many times did he fumble the ball when trying to drive? That has nothing to do with touches. He also got blocked quite a bit by smaller players.
If we were paying Marvin $5 mil, I Would be okay with him. But we are paying $7.5 mil per year (on average) to a Guy who does not do anything particularly well (except make FTs), and someone who is the fifth option on offense.
Matt Barnes at $4 mil would duplicate Marvin’s numbers.

Hoopsworld explains Trade Player Exception(TPE) and also says the Hawks receive a 5.765 mil TPE for the S&T with Phx thats equal to Chills 1st year salary. I’m not sure that’s correct.

@MC ok this trade makes no sense if we dont get a replacement for marvin..example matt barnes or richard jefferson he’s still on the market it seems like no1 wants him right now so why not go after him…they havent even offerd shaq a contract yet to see if he will sign it so why involve in a sign and trade

I feel you man, where are all the Marvin lovers coming from all of a sudden? (Like TBS – Very Funny.)
Yesterday, these same people wanted to trade him for a doughnut hole.
Re: Wade, Bosh & LeBron? Those guys get mega-millions from endorsements also, don’t forget there are NO state taxes in Florida. They didn’t leave that much on the table. Besides, their ultra incentive is to play together. Joe doesn’t have any of those luxuries and income outlets. He will pay almost 50% in
Federal and State taxes. Just like taking the cash option on a Mega-Million Lottery Winning Ticket.
He will need a financial planner to find tax shelters and charities to hide that money or risk losing nearly 48%
straight up! I wish I had such problems – LOL.

To start with, dangling them for trade (that have starred at times for the Hawks) is only good if they get something in return. Shaq is just looking for the next big pay check, so it will be interesting to see if the Hawks really do understand how to run a franchise, and this may be the example.
