Las Vegas–I know my blog people have been trying to trade Marvin (and Bibby) with every conceivable and inconceivable permutation of fantasy deals. My favorite thing is when the proposals go like this: “Marvin and Bibby are terrible and their contracts are burdens. The Hawks should trade them for (fill in the blank with better players with more reasonable contracts).”
So do you want Marvin gone so badly that you’d swap him for 38-year old Shaq as a two-year-rental-at-most off the bench? David Aldridge reports that the Cavs are dangling Shaq in a sign-and-trade proposal for Marvin. Since the Hawks could just sign Shaq using the mid-level exception if they want him (which still isn’t certain) the Cavs presumably are counting on Atlanta’s desire to shed Marvin’s contract as the primary motivation for a trade.
Assuming Shaq gets the two-year deal he wants, Atlanta’s savings would total the difference between their salaries over the next two seasons plus the final two seasons of Marvin’s deal (assuming he exercises his option year)
For 2010-11, the Hawks’ savings would be the difference between the $6.7 million owed Marvin and Shaq’s new salary. For 2011-12, the savings would be Marvin’s $7.5 million salary minus Shaq’s salary. Shaq and Marvin would both be off the books in 2012-13, when Marvin makes $8.3 million, and the Hawks wouldn’t be on the hook for Marvin’s $7.5 million option in 2013-14.
Since this is all premature talk at this point, I won’t get into how the Hawks would go about replacing Marvin in the lineup. The Hawks still aren’t sure if Shaq would be a good fit even if he is willing to take less than the mid-level. Also, Marvin still has support within the organization, with the hope that L.D.’s new system will make a big difference in his production.
As for Aldridge’s contention that the Hawks aren’t willing to pay much more than the minimum due to “budget limitations,” all I can tell you is that everything I’ve heard suggests they are willing to exceed the luxury-tax threshold for the right player(s). I get the feeling that player isn’t Shaq.

@ Ray….I am with you on RandMo…it’s time to say goodbye to him. I do think Teague is a star. Everyone must understand that only one other player on the ATL summerleague roster will play with him, and that is crawford. Yes, Teague is having a lot of turnovers, but you can’t blame them all on him. The PG is the QB of a basketball team. The ball will always touch his hands. Not all interceptions are a QB’s fault. Say if the ball hits the receivers hands and it bounces out, do you blame that on the QB? It’s the receiver’s fault but the TO will be the QBs….ok enough football as you see i am anticipating the season. lol. Shaq would be a nice addition to the team, but i wouldn’t trade for him. He’s a FA…so i’d see if I could pick him up that one….other than that, i’d go after Miller and/or Tolliver, if they haven’t signed elsewhere yet.

BOTTOM LINE PEOPLE, The HAWKS NEEDS A “BIG MAN”! A dominant one if they are to try and win this thing with what they have! SHAQ will at least control the paint defensively.

macaroni tony,
John Wall had 8 turnovers in his first summer league game. And he also had 8 turnovers in his second game. But I do think he can dribble. Just give him some time.
Ray,
I agreed that our bench guys were not used properly or used enough last season. But I would not bring any of them back.
Give me Kurt Thomas, Joel Anthony, Anthony Tolliver, Craig Smith, etc. I would be surprised if any of those guys get the MLE.
I think the Hawks are waiting around for the prices to go on sale.

Please say NO to SHAQ 4 Marvin. Just give him cash or Bibby and/or Mo. We can’t give up Marvin in the deal.
Sign Matt Barnes! Move Marvin to the bench. Sign Thomas, Shaq and or Kwame and see where it goes.

@Truth-Serum are you talking to me or Raybud cause I’m brand new to the Blog(posting comments) I do know there is someone here named Big Ray that posts a lot, but I’m not him at all.
Like if I had to count this probably is my 4th post ever made on one of these blogs lol.
@O’brien Kurt Thomas is just as old as Shaq I’m sorry, but I just don’t like the Kurt Thomas signing give me someone else on that one.
Brad Miller I can understand we just need someone to clog the middle not only to stop Dwight Howard, but to stop anyone from making easy shots down that low including Dwight Howard.
The Hawks might be forced to look at the centers brought in via Summer Camp like last year. I say if they could steal Greg Oden away from Portland for a little of nothing go for it. Same with Hasheem Thabeet.
Yeah I know what most of you will say about Greg Oden, but if he gets over his foot problems we’d have a legit threat in the post. As for Hasheem he’s young, and even though drafted way to high I think Memphis would be willing to let him go as they got Marc Gasol.
Just trying to give out some options I know I might get backlash from them.

Bad summer league game for Teague and Morris, but again Jordan Crawford looks NBA ready. Teague hasn’t figured out how to control his speed yet and is really trying to figure out the PG position. I watched Teague a few times at Wake and he struck me as a combo SG more than a PG. I think he’s still working through that now and whatever Woody did with him last year didn’t help. One simple thing I would tell Jeff is to keep his dribble. Don’t force a pass when you have your dribble. If you drive and can’t get to the rim, just keep dribbling and look for someone open/rest the offensive.
GO HAWKS!

Im not worried about Teague off night tonight b/c 1st of all, half those guys aren’t going to make the team anyway cause they cant finish a shot/layup..2nd of all, as far as Im concern, this IS Teague’s rookie season all over again cause he played little to no min all season plus he never played in a summer league b4. And 3rd, someone made a good point that Rondo was just as bad when he started, now look at him now, with all the confidence in the world with the help of a great coach. Drew will be that coach for him. So I dont care if Teague makes 9 more TO’s next game, I dont see no one bashing John Wall for his 16 total TO’s in 2 games??

Yall have to understand that Teague will be with the starters this time,JJ/JSmoove/Al Horford, not the 2nd stings guys who NEVERED finish around the basket for him, Joe Smith/Zaza/Morris..so dont get down on him now..its TOO early for that. Remember, this is his 1st summer league!

Who could we get at SF?
Ray
July 14th, 2010
11:43 pm
Speaking of SF I still say Josh Needs to move over to the 3 if we get a C not immediately, but sooner or later it has to happen.
Cause Horford just isn’t a C he’s a PF, and can still be an all-star at that position even though he will have much tougher time getting there with the likes of Amare, Garrnet, Bosh all in the east.
Still Marvin should have been coming off the bench in the get go, and what’s up with all the hate on Zaza never got that I think Zaza is a great player.

if we this becomes reality then i would do the following:
Starting 5:
SG: Joe Johnson
SF: Josh Smith
PF: Al Horford
C:Shaq
PG:Jeff Teague / Mike Bibby
6th man: Jamal Crawford
7th man: Jordan Crawford
whats wrong with that? let shaq start, set the tone, give him a few minutes, rotate with zaza and horford..

@TLH678 man if we trade away Marvin do you know how thin the starting lineup becomes. Say if Marvin leaves Josh Smith got injured, and they did move him to SF where he needs to be. Who’s his back-up? Mo Evans that in itself isn’t good because then after that who do we have.
I’m scared like someone else said that we will let Marvin get away for barely nothing, and he becomes a superstar in another system. Then everyone will be like “Oh Rick Sund let Marvin get away he was only 24 years old he’s the worse GM ever.”

DON’T TRADE MARVIN………….Why trade a talented 24 year old for a broken down 38 year old at the end of his career? It don’t make any sense. The Hawks Will Never get better by always GIVING away its talented players for some other teams trash and castaways. The Cavaliers are going to release Shaq anyway. Offer Shaq the MLE and if he doesn’t accept it, then move on. Shaq is NOT in a bargaining position. His options are dwindling. The Hawks hold the Ace’s when it comes to Shaq and the Cavaliers, and not the other way around.

“What about Eddie Curry?”
Eddy Curry has life problems… His lack of financial solvency, his lack of dedication to his professional game, and his health problems have never led him to be a less than a appealing choice.

I partly agree HGN. I do not think Shaq is broken down. He will still be of good use to any team that gets him “if” he decides to stay in shape. I do agree we should not trade marvin for him. I have said trade Marvin and Bibby to Memphis for Thabeet and Mayo. I do not think they will give us Mayo but with Bibby’s contract expiring next year that could give them enough cap space to go after Melo. The Hawks need to sign Shaq but not trade for him. Then the hawks roster would look like this:
JJ, Josh Smith, Jamal Crawford, Al Horford, Jeff Teague, Mayo, Thabeet, Jordan, Crawford, Shaq, Zaza, and Joe Smith and maybe Evans. Not a bad team roster with plenty of bigs to foul the mess out of Dwight in the playoffs. Also plenty of perimeter scoring that will open up the lane for Al, Shaq, or Thabeet.

If Hawks want to trade Marvin Williams then get so value for him.The Hawks can send Marvin Williams to Washington for Nick Young SG, Javale Mcgee C, and Al Thornton SF.This deal won’t go over the salary cap and the hawks would get extra players, AND then try to sign Shaq.

The Orlando Magic have decided to retain restricted free agent guard J.J. Redick, matching the three-year, $19 million offer sheet he received from the Chicago Bulls last week. The Magic will make their intention known Friday – the last possible day — but NBA sources familiar with the front-office thinking of the Magic confirmed their decision Thursday afternoon. “They aren’t letting go of J.J.,” said the source. Reddick is shown in the photo at left guarding Toronto’s Marco Belinelli. FanHouse.com

I’m really interested in seeing what Marvin can do in a more fluid offense. He’s a pretty tegood defender, he can shoot and make free throws. He needs to rebound better. I’ve always seen him as more of a system player so I’m hoping he’ll be more productive with more offensive motion and ball movement. He needs to be an 18pt 8rb guy.

Goldenstate like marvin, and they want a young smallforward, plus they can’t keep monta and curry playing basically the same position.
TRADE MARVIN AND TEAGUE AND A FIRST FOR ELLIS.
GO HAWKS!!!!!!!
I know you have been accused of experiementation before, on these very boards.
I believe you are a chronic smoker.
I believe you are smoking O.G. Kush in an ice bong. Rip, after rip, after rip. Just like Snoop Dizzle.
Montae is a good player, but is a little shaky so far. I wouldn’t trade a top 20 pick for him straight up. 21-30…….perhaps, straight-up. But we have a point guard that might as well be a rookie cuz we had a coach that ran an Iso Joe Offense and made Teague the 3rd string PG.
Post when you shroom………I’m lookin’ forward to that one.

Josh Needs to move over to the 3 if we get a C ?
Josh is one of the best power forwards in the nba now why would we move him for a scub homeless backup power forward. Josh is better than horford so why would we put the second best in place of the best?
Kind of like Hillery telling Obama shed let him be Vice president while she was in second place and he first.
Josh is a budding superstar and one of the best if not the best power forwards in the game, a clear upgrade over horford.
Maybe Al can take teagues spot…LOL

first the hawks ownership act like they don’t care if we ever have a championship team. They are not willing to part with the money it takes to have one.Second Marvin Williams is a piece of crap player that should never have been on this team(taken instead of Cris Paul).Third we should have kept Josh Childres, then traded Bibby,Marvin and a draft pick to get Chris Paul(who should have been on this team already)then get Shaq and pay the luxury tax.But none of this has or will happen because the owners our cheap. We will never have an NBA championship team in this town because ownership won’t do what it takes like the Miami heat are doing.

Sign Jarvis Hayes to play SF for 2 M, Have Cleveland sign Shaq for 5 M, trade Williams and Evans for Shaq. Both Johnson and Josh Smith can play SF minutes especially if the Hawks bring on Josh Powell to play minutes at PF, too small to play center. Front line of Smith, Horford, Shaq, ZAZA, and Powell could be strong underneath the basket, Johnson at SG and sometimes at SF along with both Crawfords would be awesome. Just need the point guards of Teaque and Bibby to come thru. Trade is salary neutral.
