Las Vegas–Made it to Sin City for Atlanta’s Summer League opener vs. Memphis. I hear there’s a severe heat warning for Wednesday and Thursday so I guess that means I will be forced to chill in the casino’s A/C for long periods of time. It’s all about sacrifice.
Before I get to the game, let me address the Chills trade, which is still pending as he gets clearance from FIBA. I know my blog people are not happy with the deal–neither is the AJC’s Mark Bradley–but it requires some context.
The first thing to remember about a sign-and-trade is it takes a lot to make it happen. The teams have to agree to the trade, the player has to be willing to join his new team and the new team has to reach contract terms with the player. It turned out Phoenix was the only team where all of these factors aligned with Chills.
From what I’ve heard, the other teams interested in Chills weren’t willing to meet his price, so that narrowed the potential trade partners for the Hawks. Then Phoenix stepped up with a big offer that the Hawks probably wouldn’t have been willing to match. The Hawks apparently did a good enough job of making the Suns think they might match it that they got them to send a second-round pick and earned a trade exception (the amount of which will depend on Chills’ first-year salary).
So the Hawks, with little leverage, got something for Chills when they very well could have received nothing. The fact that Chills wasn’t getting the kind of offers he wanted until the Suns came through tells you his value just wasn’t that great with NBA teams. The Hawks made the only deal they could under the circumstances.
Now we’ll see how they make use of the exception, which will be good for one year from the official date of the trade.
– OK, one more thing before I get into the game: It’s looking like Shaq still wants too much money for the Hawks. That suggests he wants a deal that starts at more than the mid-level exception. The Hawks would have to do a sign-and-trade if it wants to pay him more and so far there’s been no indication they are willing to do so.
Grizzlies 89, Hawks 85 (Box Score)
– It was a pretty good effort from the Hawks considering that they’ve only been practicing together for three days and Teague is the only guy certain to be a rotation player next season. Memphis, meanwhile, had been practicing for several days and send out NBAers O.J. Mayo, Sam Young, Darrell Arthur and DeMarre Carroll.
– If JC2 keeps this up, then maybe he gets in the rotation, too. After a slow start, Crawford was impressive while scoring 16 points. There were no signs of the pre-draft concerns about his ability to adapt to playing off the ball as he was very crafty floating to open space on the floor. And JC2 also proved to be a willing and effective passer.
– “He played well,” Teague said. “He just plays. He doesn’t have a position or anything like that. He just plays. He can make shots and he’s a good passer as well. I guess people underestimated his ability to pass the ball. He’s a very good passer. I like playing with him a lot.”
– Most impressive was that pass Crawford whipped to Richard Hendrix under the basket for a dunk. There also were a couple times where Crawford’s quick outlet passes led to fastbreaks. Give him those hockey assists.
– Teague is supposed to stand out in these kind of games and he did. He played fast but under control, finding open space to get to the basket and always looking for his teammates.
– L.D. wants to play at a faster pace, and Teague and Crawford can help with that. Can you imagine a lineup with those two pushing the pace, J.J. floating to the corners for catch-and-shoots and Smoove and Al going hard to the basket? Jamal can fit in there somewhere, too.
– Sergiy Gladyr can shoot it but he was overmatched on defense.
– Hendrix was better in the second half than the first. He’s got a solid build and knows how to use it.
–Pape Sy seemed bothered at times by the tight D. He has to learn how to create space with his body. But, like Hendrix, he looked better after halftime.
– Alade Aminu looked good finishing around the basket. He’s more finesse than power, a quick leaper who runs the floor well.
– I didn’t see any defensive switches but lots of show and recover. Can’t lie, it was kind of weird to see guys in Hawks unis play straight-up D.
– Hard to evaluate the offense with so many new players trying to figure out how to play together but I noticed lots of down-screens, ball reversals and drive-and-kicks. The ball didn’t stay on one side very long.
– The Hawks got handled on the boards 38-27, with only James Augustine doing good work among the bigs. He’s got legit size but lacks body control.
– RandMo didn’t show much except the usual tendency to foul a lot. He should stand out in this kind of game the same way as Teague.
– I’m out, blog people. Gonna see if I can find a place where they stay on soft 17s.

First, and I hope to see more aggression and passion out of Teague in the next game. He has the ability, but seem reluctant to use it sometimes.

For those who don’t like the Chills deal … Trade exception (3 mil ish)makes your favorite expendable piece a lot easier to move. Marvin can now fetch a 10 mil per year player. Bibby in the same neighborhood. We will certainly have to take someone else’s crap contract in the deal, but the options are much greater with that flexibility.

what is the likelihood the Hawks make a trade (Bibby or Marvin) 2 get the cash 4 Shaq? Do we really need him bad enough 2 lose one of those guys?

I liked what I saw in Teague..he seem very under control, exactly what a PG should do. Last season under Woodson, he seemed to rush everything, his shots, not knowing when to pass the ball or shot it. But tonight, I saw NONE OF THAT!! He doesnt have to creat his own shot, he has JC2 for that. He just needs to continue to play what the defense gives him; let the game come to him. I also liked what Hendrex, Aminu, & James Augustine showed tonight as well. Pape Sy has a swag about him that I like..I cant put my finger on it but I’m starting to see what Larry Drew saw he him in try-outs. I think he could be a ‘Colision’ to us in the future like he is to Chris Paul.

For those of you who didn’t watch the game, let me tell you that the player that shined the most tonight was the Aminu kid. He’s 6′10″ that can handle the ball, takes high quality shots and runs the court like a gazelle. He was 6 of 8 from the floor, the high scorer for most of the game and for some reason was on the bench the entire last quarter.
I take this kid over Joe Smith as the backup PF 10 times out of 10. MC, any chance he makes the team?

Good to see some highlights and action. Kinda surprised Mayo was out there, considering his draft status. Leadership move on his part or developmental concerns on MEM coaches part?
Teague looked fast in the highlights, although most of them were MEM-related.

Not a bad showing from the Hawks considering they were going against a NBA caliber lineup. I like what I saw from the Crawford kid, very explosive. Teague is going to be fine as soon as things slow down for him–this is why Woodson should have played him last year, but I digress. If Shaq wants more money go get someone else, he is a good fit for the Hawks at the MLE, not for more. 10 mil can get you a decent big man easy, other teams do it all the time. I actually see what ASG saw in Drew. This offense looks like it fits the Hawks like a glove, but I admit its still early.

I said it draft night and I’ll repeat it.
Jordan Crawford is a baller.
Jay Bilas wasn’t lying when he said that this kid puts it in the basket easier than any other guy in the draft. Pick #27, the Hawks got a gem. Value pick my a$$, this guy is already *good* with the potential to be *great*.
And I agree with what northcyde said on that last blog. LD might seriously want to reconsider holding this guy back in any way. This guy is a pure scorer. I personally think JC2’s one of those guys that won’t care even if LD’s very critical of his shot selection. He’ll take tough shots, but he’ll make more of them than he’ll miss. We’ll see how he fares, but I’ve been high on this guy for quite some time. Watched him play whenever I could throughout this past NCAA season at Xavier – and the kid was a baller.

I keep telling you peaple that Teague is not a point guard he’s a shooting guard. Mr Sund BLEW IT! I told him to take Darren Collison. Mr Sund BLEW IT AGAIN! He shoulda drafted Hassan Whiteside instead of that guy from France. The way it looks Jordan Crawford need to play the point because like Teague said he is a good passer. He had more assists(5) and points(16) than Teague.

I_am_soulstar he did look good but as someone pointed out people around here already said we trading the “steal of the draft” to NJ. I think JC2 will turn out better than James but its just funny how we whine about transactions without being reserve and see if it actually benefits us. One second ASG is cheap and wont pay JJ, then next we overpaid for him. One minute Jchill ” who didnt play a lick of ball for us for two years” is a bum who was picked 6th the next we let him go for nothing. Its always back and forth on this blog but very amusing none the less.
p.s. depending how we use the trade exemption it might just turn out to be a good deal.

I did not see the game. But from reading the blog, checking the box score, and seeing the highlights, I have a few comments.
RandMo didn’t show much except the usual tendency to foul a lot.
I know its only one game, but I hope we don’t bring RandMo back to the Hawks. Give somebody else a chance.
Teague still needs to work on his offense (aggressiveness, and shot making) and court vision, but with more practice, and continued reassurance from Drew, it will come. His defense was ok. Just keep working, and keep improving.
When the season starts, we won’t need as much offense from Teague as we will need his defense, assists and tempo.
JC2 looked good at times, but he was only 6-15, so maybe somebody can comment on his shot selection. Either way, we already have JJ and Jamal at SG, so where will JC2 get minutes? Maybe the plan is to bring him along slowly like Orlando did JJ Redick.

I wish this team would find a way to get a legit center and deadly 3 point shooter!!!!
options at center: Sam Dalembert, Tyson Chandler, Shaq (dont really want the trouble)
all we need him to do is rebound and block shots if he can get 8-10 pts fine. Move Al to PF Josh to small forward and yes i said JOSH SMITH to SMALL FORWARD!!! With all players they need to know their role and their needs if you cant get him to do whats needed then can him.
Center: pick one
Power Forward: AL
Small Forward:Josh
SG: Joe
Pg:Teague/Bibby
As bad as i want Marvin gone I really believe he will take 2 steps forward under Drew. But he is about the bargaining chip we have to trade for a center right now.

Shaq makes NO sense if we are going to play an up-tempo, motion offence. Yes, another big is needed for times when halfcourt sets require more muscle, but please: “Say NO to Shaq.” Unless, he’s willing to commit to being a BENCH PLAYER like Antoine Carr did for Utah in his declining years. As big as Shaq’s ego is, I just don’t see it.
He can still play. But, will he be willing to play the role the Hawks need…..

Like most I was impressed with the baby Hawks (Teague and Crawford). And unimpressed with Randolph Morris only because I expected more from him since I believed he was the most experienced Hawk on the squad. Didn’t really realize there were two Aminu. Aminu stood out most among the bigs.
I thought the team started off a little slow and unsure. But as the game progressed became more confident and more comfortable with each other they were able to get something going and eventually got the opportunity to win their first game. Unfortunately for Teague his untimely turnover took that opportunity away. However, the positive from that turnover was it will teach him take care of the ball better especially at crucial points of the game. Good to see Teague hit a three. And can’t wait to hear Ryan Cameron say Jordan Crawford for threeeeeee cause JC2 was swishing those tres.
Anyhow the action heated up in the second half and was very entertaining almost made me forget I watching on the computer. Nope no it didn’t.

Sund has led the NBA this Year in most bone head moves. He is effectively taking a 53win 3rd seeded team and castrating them to 6th or 7th seed by his insistence on implementing his failed strategy of using power forwards to play center and by choosing to pinch pennies rather than make a bold address to the Hawks serious issues.
Every economical opportunity we’ve had to go after or address an starting center has past. Whats left is a fading Shaq (hes still better than horford) and not much else, nothing that will get us in the big three category which is where we were we the summer began. We definitely lost ground. We had 4/5 years of upward mobility, to reach the 3rd seed. With the right pieces we could have held that and perhaps ventured further. We were headed in the right direction. There was no need to reverse course, change directions. This decision came from a man who has never won a championship, and never will using his philosophy of powerforwards quickness in place of a centers dominance.
Let me respectfully submit that it would be best for the organization to fire Sund and lets get turn back towards the top before we end up in the lottery in 2 years.
The ultimate bone head move would be to move one of ,if not the best powerforward in the game to Small forward to make room for another forward who is not as good as him. In reaching out to find a place for horford who is a good player but not the caliber of player Josh is lets not fix what works and works very well. Al may be better suited to come off the bench and back up the center and Josh and log the same number of minutes he gets now. If any one should move to the 3 it should be Al. He has a face up jumper in the lane. But Josh is extremely effective and unselfish as a power forward. There are so many dimensions to his game and he has so many tools. The man is a buddy superstar. Leave Josh right where hes at! DFWJ. The college park player is going to be a star for a long time.

On Jeff Teague
16 points with a .75 assist to turnover ratio would be great if he can carry that over to the regular season. That is better production than we got from the PG spot last year. It is impressive enough for me to believe the guy should get a shot. The stats show he has some talent. The only way talent becomes production is with playing time. Period!

I saw the first quarter, when RandMo picked up 2 fouls (one offensive and one defensive) in about 45-60 seconds at the start of the game. It was a nice experiment but if dude can’t stay on the floor in this setting, well… sign Chris Hunter to the 2-year project plan and see how that works out.
MC, you completely forgot to mention Hasheem Thabeet. But I don’t blame you, dude is forgettable. But Memphis did start a collection of “brand names” if nothing else. JC2 looked very comfortable out there, he hit his first corner 3 like it was a lay-up. I didn’t think any of the bigs distinguished themselves, they all looked very, very ordinary. Too bad we couldn’t find a little better quality at the 4/5 to send out there. Kind of hard to control the tempo when you are badly out-rebounded.

The Miami Heat trifecta has adversely affected the Hawks management’s game plan to the point that there is confusion on how best-cost wise of course-to proceed with the upcoming season.
The option of making the resigning of Joe the singular accomplishment o the off season has been removed because of having to face one or more of the new Heat seekers on an individual basis, they have to contend with all of them on a division rival.
Issues like w/not Teague can be the starting PG; All Star Al’s ability to play the 4 on a regular and consistent basis and Joh’s willingness to assume the mantle of leadership equal to his ability are crtical in the context of an even more competitive climate.
Now the suits have to add more pieces to the mix, without breaking the budget PLUS find away to increase attendance. Looks like this is going to be a long summer.

Summer league is just summer league, but it does make you want young hungry talent on this team. Pape and Aminu sound like a good fit. Gladyr needs to learn some D, but you can’t coach quickness. JC2 and JT seem to be ideal for the coming fast paced offense.
I hope to see Marvin kept at least until Feb.
See what we can get for Bibby & Mo. Sorry Randmo, I’ve supported you 100%, but you’ve gotta produce! Seems Mario, Joe Smith and Collins are dissappearing. Question is who fills that role? I say roll the dice on young hungry players to search for a gem.

The Hawks have to do something to keep the fanbase engaged so i would expect Shaq to come here. And if that Happens then we will keep bibby simply to match the change of pace when shaq in the game. However we will need to make another move to get Biedrens from Golden State or another atheletic big man. Maybe we can use Maurice Evans, 2nd Round pick and the Trade exception for that. I know its really attractive to try to make a big splash like Miami did, but the Hawks had a really good team last year. So good before the playoff started we were actually picked by a few analyst to be in the Eastern Conference Finals. Ok not that Jamal Mashburn’s picks matter, the point is I really want to get bigger, and I also want to have better productivitiy on offense. I think the Hawks need to give up on Shaq, because it looks like we are his last choice, and he still wants to start (which might lead to chemistry issues). Also, I don’t want to wait around for him, only to see him sign somewhere else (Dallas maybe), while all the other bigs get snatched up.
If he’s the guy Sund wants, then make him an offer, give him a couple days to accept, and then move on.
Fundamentals,
Matt Barnes opted out of $1.6 mil in Orlando, so I think he is looking for at least $3 mil per year. And I think he is worth it. I think Marvin and Barnes would make a good SF duo.

It looks like Miami has just completed assembling their starting lineup. They resigned OHaslem, which means CBosh will have to play center, and are about to sign MMiller. Pat Riley has put a very good starting lineup together, and I know he’s chomping at the bit to coach this team. He’ll be looking for any usable excuse, like the team getting off to a slow start, to take over the team he’s put together.
If JPryzbilla is still available, we should make him an offer and force Portland to either match it or do a sign and trade. In a S&T, we could send them MBibby and MEvans, who’s combined salaries are $8.06M for Pryzbilla, and use a portion of the exemption to makeup any difference in salaries. Then we could use one of our trade exemptions to sign a backup PG and whatever else we feel we need.
I wouldn’t waste my time with Shaq at this point. It’s obvious we’re nothing more than a fall back option for him, and he’s trying to extort max money from us, since he knows he’ll come here are a backup. It’s obvious no one else is interested enough in him to offer him more than a MLE, so why should we be willing to pay more?
We could also try the EOkafor deal I mentioned earlier. The Hornets might really be interested in taking on MEvans’ $2.5M expiring contract and MBibby’s $5.56M contract, which will be expiring after this season (total $8.06M), for Okafor’s $11.5M contract. We use the trade $3M trade exemption to make the salaries match. The numbers certainly work, and we’d still have our biannual and full MLE available to sign whatever else we need.

Randmo definitely hurt himself badly with such a poor outing. He should dominate the C spot in summer league to have a chance of being a role player for us. It’s just one game, but the pressure is on. I’ve tried to back him 100% Real JC, but I feel like he must show dominance in summer league or try another experiment. Kid needs time somewhere, but D-League may be the answer.

Good comments Ken. I think we let Joel go to early back in the day. He’s a big banger. What are the indications that he’s 100% after last years injury? Question is will Portland part ways since Oden has been so injury prone?
I think the Hornets will do something this summer? Not sure what, but they don’t need Bibby with their 2 PG’s already under contract.

Fundamentals I actually think Randmo is a Euro league player. He just doesn’t have the explosiveness to consistantly play in the NBA. I think Woody could have used him more last year, because of his offensive abilities, but Randy seems not have a good feel for rebounding and defensive. He has to understand that he’s not going to out jump or out quick anyone to the ball. He has to position himself first and then box out. He has to play much better position defensive.

FUNDAMENTALS-it’s not Bibby they’d be interested in, but his contract, which will be a very trad-able expiring contract after this season. The Hornets would immediately save $3M in the deal, and an additional $2.5M when MEvans’s contract expires. They could easily trade Bibby’s expiring contract after this season, which would yield a total savings of $11.6M.
They could then offer CP3 a max contract(he’s already making around $15M)and have more than enough left over to add more talent. For the Hornets, the fruits of the trade would take place next season. The only issue with Pryzbilla is his willingness to return to the Hawks. He was upset at BK for trading him after he had such a productive stay here, and it left a bad taste in his mouth.
I would actually consider Pryzbilla a better health risk than Shaq. The main reason the relationship between he and Kobe soured was because Kobe felt Shaq was a slacker and wouldn’t play through injuries he felt weren’t that serious. We’ve already seen Kobe’s willingness to make sacrifices and play through injuries. It might have been the reason Shaq and DWade’s relationship soured as well. After winning the title, Shaq stayed injured most of the time, so they sent his butt packing.

Teague had more than 3 assists. He should have been in double figures in assists, actually. Too many fumbled balls by the guys he was passing to.
I’d like to label Jordan Crawford a contributor, but I also know this is just one game. All the same, his game is pretty smooth. He was a baller for real once he got over that slow start. Kid could’ve had 20 points easily, and he’s fearless with the ball in his hands.
Randolph Morris is doing his best to prove that he does NOT belong on an NBA roster. I’d rather have Sheldon Williams back, and THAT is saying something…
Aminu is going to be somebody’s Solomon Jones. Hendrix has a bit of a shot somewhere.
I don’t think we’re going to sign Shaq. Whispers everywhere is that he wants more money than we’re willing to pay, and he may not be amenable to coming off the bench.
As long as we don’t come back with a trio like Joe Smith (though I really think we didn’t use him nearly enough), Jason Collins, and Randolph Morris. We MUST do better than that. MUST.

terrell,
The problem with the Hawks is, as O’Brien stated, the last thing we needed was another 2. Unless we plan on getting rid of Jamal this year, our most pressing need was the 3. James is a true 3, and probably would have taken Marvin’s job by midseason, if actually given the chance. It really shows how wrong Hawks management was on Marvin, when the best deal Chills could get was 5 years 30 million, and we gave Marvin 40 million. Chills is an overall much better player than Marvin, and much more versatile. This year, if things stay as is, we will have two extremely overpaid guys on our roster, with Joe and Marvin, and will probably have to overpay to get Shaq, and we will end up overpaying to keep Al next year. Does not sound like good business to me, unless you are winning Championships.

“I keep telling you peaple that Teague is not a point guard he’s a shooting guard… The way it looks Jordan Crawford need to play the point because like Teague said he is a good passer. He had more assists(5) and points(16) than Teague.”
Tony, I strongly disagree with your statement. Teague’s quickness and willingness to pass the ball will completely transform the Hawks offense. No more iso Joe! Teague would have had lots more assists if the bigs would have finished their lay-ups that Teague gave to them. Crawford is the quintessence of a shooting guard. He is a fearless shooter. That’s why he had more point that Teague. It is a major plus that he can see the court so well (when defenders are rushing at him to contest his jumpshot) and hit the open man with a pass. MC is right; the Hawks will play at a much faster pace this season with Teague running the offense and Crawford, Jr. coming off the bench.
I predict the Hawks will ultimately get Shaq. The powers that be know that next year will be the best chance for the Hawks to win a championship. Miami will only get stronger each year as the big three learn to play with each other. Boston will have a down year (age & Perkins). Chicago will add more pieces in 2011-2012 to an already strong team. And most importantly, they did not pay JJ the max to simply keep the status quo. They mean to climb over Orlando, which means climbing over Howard, which means adding Shaq. They did not pay JJ the max to get thrifty with the few million more it will take to hire Shaq and win a championship.

“Reddick for 7 mill a year? Wow! And we complain about Marvin for 8. lol!”
Reddick makes shots, Marvin does not. Reddick is a better player at this point, and trust me I hated Reddick in college.
In the playoffs this year, Marvin averaged 31.4 mpg, 39%FG, 50%3P on two 3’s in the whole playoffs, and 8.4ppg. In the conference semi’s his averages dropped to 32mpg, 30%FG, O 3p%, and 6.3ppg.
Reddick averaged 19.2mpg, 42%FG, and 42%3P on 15/35 3 point shots, and 7.5ppg. With the increase in minutes in the conference finals, he averaged 26.2mpg, 42%FG, 50%3P, and 11.2ppg. Plus the fact that he knocks down open shots, is not clumsy and goofy, and he is aggresive offensively, and has improved defensively. All things equal, he actually should be paid more than Marvin because he is a better player, and he is improving, but Atlanta obviously overpaid. That’s our fault not Reddick’s. Marvin was paid on potential, Reddick was paid on production.

You got these so-call experts on this board making excuses for Teague because he didn’t have more assists. Heck, if Magic Johnson teammates didn’t fumble the ball at times he would have had more assists to. Every pg in the league would have more assits if their teammates didn;t fumble the ball. Almost all of the playoff teams and soon to be contender teams, has used the FA market to better their teams, the eastern conf are going to be very tough this up coming season. The hawks are the only playoff team that has not made any moves to better their team, and if they do not make any moves or the right moves, They will not win 50 gms with this current roster. The Bulls, Magic, Bucks, Heat, and the Bobcats, are going to be really tough, and then, up and coming Nets. The hawks has a lot of work to do, and they need to start immediately before all of the FA that are worth anything are gone.

Thoughts from last night
Teague may be the fastest guy in the NBA, that said, he is not ready to start this year in my opinion. His 4th year, if he develops, yes. but not now.
Jordan Crawford is better than I thought.
RandMo is worse than I thought
Aminu is athletic, needs work in the weight room
Sy is the real deal. In a couple of years, he may be impressive off the bench playing the 2 and 3 spots.
And without Shaq the Hawks are in trouble signing a good FA Center. Miller leaning Bulls. Tolliver is better and younger than Joe Smith – I say get him as backup 4. Kwame may be better than Jason Collins (I hope) – maybe get him and Aminu and call it finished up front if we miss out on Shaq.
I wouldn’t mind another PG (Rafer Alston? if he’s mentally ready) and if we dumped Mo’ in a trade, wouldn’t mind bringing Matt Barnes off the bench behind Marvin.
P.S. Keep Marvin – 24 yrs. old this year – he may be a stud at 26 and still have 2 yrs. left on his contract at 7.5m – a real bargain – 6-9 240 – can play either forward spot.

hawks_4_life,
I agree. I think we need 2 more bigs (a center and a PF) but while getting those bigs we need to be loking for a SF, that can defend and a PG, because i’s trying to move Bibby with one of these trades.
If we could get CJ Watson, Matt Barnes, Anthony Tolliver, and Shaq or Chandler while using Marvin, Evans, Bibby, the trade exception, bi-annual, and the MLE, it would be a fantastic off-season. We could look like this:
PG-Teague/Watson
SG-Crawford/Crawford2
SF-JJ/Barnes
PF-Josh/Tolliver
C-Horford/Shaq/Zaza
That would be 11 players that could rotate! Add Pape Sy and Luke Jackson if we need 13 players to fill out the roster. This lin up can GO!!!

Sund is brilliant however – The Master Plan:
Jamal and Mo walk in Free agency summer 2011 – we use that extra 13m to: Re-sign Horford, pay for JJ’s 10.5% raise, and get Sy and maybe Gladyr off the bench.
Summer 2012 Bibby’s 6m off the books – and if we sign Shaq, his 6m gone also – we use the savings to get another PG behind Teague, and a Center, and save money to sign Josh Smith in 2013.
2013 – ZaZa’s 4.75m comes off the books, will re-sign for alot less probably – that savings is used to also re-sign Josh Smith.
Sund has it all planned out – sharper than a tack – all this could blow up with trades or injuries however…..

No one mentions that Teague turned the ball over on a sloppy play with a chance to take the lead with a minute left. Given, in a real NBA game Jamal might be the one in the game in that situation even if Teague starts. Still- at this point I do not trust Bibby or Teague enough to be the starter.
I think we need a guy to play a role like Ridnour did on the Bucks last year. A solid player, doesn’t make mistakes, can get you a 3 now and again. He didn’t demand starting minutes, but he could play. So when Jennings needed to be reeled in a bit, they had a solid guy to go in. Maybe Bibby could do tht, but he neeeds to be in the gym all summer working on getting some quickness on D back.

Chilz avoids the weight room like the plague. He will be 31 at the end of this contract. He is not an NBA starter, but going to a perfect situation in Phoenix for his skill set. Marvin will be 27 at the end of his contract (same age as Childress is now). If his back holds out, he does have an NBA starters body. He will be much more durable than Childress probably. Chilz was even injured in Greece. I love his game and intensity, but you have a younger starter still developing versus and older bench guy. Would I have liked to see Childress back – yes, I said if the Hawks signed Nate Robinson, Childress and Shaq – call it an offseason – but the luxury tax would not allow that to happen.
P.S. Could you imagine Nate and Jeff T. on the same team? Nobody could catch us….

First, are you really dumb enough to think offering JJohnson a max contract to resign is penny pinching, and wasn’t a bold move?
Secondly, wasn’t AHORFORD, the center you’ve been complaining about, the center that led the Hawks to those 47 and 53 wins and 4th and 3rd seeds respectively over the last 2yrs?

The frustrating part about the center situation is that Shaq has what we need physically, just not in terms of role and attitude. We need a guy who is cool with 15 minutes a game and is there solely for shot blocking, defense, and a certain Orlando center. Shaq can do that, but he will start to whine about minutes, not starting, etc. I’d rather have a Camby, B. Wallis (maybe 2 yrs ago) or a Chandler (although too expensive and questionable health). Whiteside hd like 5 blocks in his debut. Just sayin…..

@ MC If Jordan Crawford keeps looking good, where would he fit into the rotation? Given his good showing passing the ball and experience handling the ball at Xavier, any chance he steals some backup PG minutes? Or would we consider moving Joe over to the 3 some? In my opinion, 3 years $19 mil for JJ Redick is over-paying. But 2 things to keep in mind. Redick does something really well (shoot the 3), and because he was restricted, Chicago had to overpay in order to reduce the likelihood of Orlando matching, so I understand the deal.
Interesting stat: Anthony Tolliver, a 6’11” center, played 46 games, averaging 31 mpg. But he made 50-152 3pt FG. Marvin played 81 games, averaged 31 mpg, and made 40-132 3pt FGs. I thought Marvin had worked on the 3 ball.
That being said, I like Anthony Tolliver and his ability to stretch the floor. Plus he made the minimum last year. Sign him up, and then sign another wide body down low.

I agree! We need to trade for Tolliver & Watson from GS. Then sign Shaq and Barnes. Would the Warriors take Zaza in a S&T for Tolliver? Maybe give them the 2nd round draft pick from the Suns. The Hawks don’t need to sign Shaq. First and foremost you build your team through the draft, and once again the Hawks GM Sund fails to draft players like Hassan Whiteside, Solomon Alabi or even Jerome Jordan. They overpaid to resign Joe Johnson and now they’re struggling to sign a center in the free agent market. This is why this current ownership will never come close to competing for a NBA Championship. This organization is absolutely pathetic.

Teague/JWill
JJ/Jamal/JC2
Marvin/Barnes
Josh/Hollins/
Horford/Pryz or Tolliver
R Morris….I see the D League in his future or possibly Lithuania, hes a hack machine -its time to pull the plug.

Drafted in 2008 by the Golden State Warriors late in the second round after a pre-draft physical uncovered potential red flags in his knee, Richard Hendrix was unceremoniously dumped by Don Nelson when he found out that he shockingly is not a fit for his system in the least bit. Hendrix seemed to have made out just fine from the deal, pocketing a cool half a million dollars in guaranteed cash for under a month of service. He proceeded to join the D-League, where he looked somewhat disinterested at times, but still found a way to average nearly 15 rebounds per-40 minutes pace adjusted, good for second in the league. He then played extremely well in two separate summer leagues (Orlando and Vegas) as a member of the Magic and Nuggets’ rosters, but when no NBA team came calling with guaranteed cash, opted to sign in the Spanish ACB with CB Granada.
The move seems to be paying off quite well for Hendrix, as he’s already established himself as one of the more productive big men in the league—averaging nearly 20 and 10 per-40 minutes pace adjusted—despite being a 23-year old rookie in the toughest domestic league in Europe. If anything, he’s upped his value significantly in Europe by showing that he can translate his game over to a new style of play, and he’s surely improved in his own right along the way.
What Hendrix brings to the table is quite obvious for those who have seen him or followed him throughout the years on this site. He’s a brute force underneath the basket with his terrific body, huge hands and 7-3 wingspan. He’s not a terribly skilled offensive player but is regardless fairly effective around the paint, particularly with his back to the basket. His main virtues lie in his rebounding ability, as he boxes out opponents extremely well and does an excellent job pursuing loose balls with his soft hands and long arms. He is yet to develop much of a face-up game and still a liability from the free throw line, two things he must address as his career moves on, but is a highly efficient player (leading the ACB in field goal percentage) who understands his limitations and comes off as quite an intelligent and fundamentally sound player.
Defensively, Hendrix is an undersized center who is effective guarding the post thanks to his strength, smarts and tenacity, but loses effectiveness the more he steps away from the basket. In today’s NBA, though, where players like David Lee and Chuck Hayes are thriving at the center position that might not be as much of an issue as it was in years past, despite the fact that Hendrix can’t be described as anything more than an average athlete at best.
As the Kurt Thomas’ and Reggie Evans’ of the world slowly get phased out in favor of younger big men, it’s only natural for teams to look in the direction of players like Hendrix to fill their void in their respective rotations. Considering the way he’s produced at every stage of his career thus far, it’s not out of the question that he could surprise someone and develop into a valuable asset.

***By the way- not even close to being as smooth as JC1. [by a long shot]
editors note: glad we got him!!!
-> I’m convinced we should make an effort to trade for Thabeet.
Right now he is undervalued. Wishfully, Memphis will be frustrated with him.
To the naked eye he is raw & undeveloped. (Marvin williams but worse)
Yet, his impact on the game is not what he does, it’s what he causes
around him due to his enormous size. Players must be aware of him
@ all times particularly on off. boards. + he’s a pretty good FT shooter.
Think Dikembe Mutombo. [overall game]
-> Teaguer, court vision???, where is that coming from?
# 1 he set up teammates all nite long, and no-one could hit a shot.
*that’s why I wanted Gladyr in with him = penetrate & kick.
# 2 he tried his darndest to run the “Princeton motion” last eve.
He would back out & set up the offense, showing leadership & poise.
-> Ol’ Pops looks like he’s got a future as a player who can defend 3 maybe 4 pos.

all in all, he seemed to adjust to the NBA game well.. he worked well in space off ball.. spotting up.. i was impressed his game had a flow to it, a calmness.. did not appear to be forced..

People simply do not watch the NBA, if they’re willing to trade for Emeka Okafor and that contract of his. Okafor was supposed to be the center that the Hornets needed, which is why they traded the injury prone Tyson Chandler for him. Well . . a little less than 2 years later, New Orleans is already willing to move him.
Why?
Because he has turned out to be a weaker presence both offensively and defensively than they ever dreamed. The dude isn’t garbage. But he isn’t the type of impact player in the middle for the money he is paid. Not even close actually. Last season, he had one of the worst Defensive PER’s amongst centers. But people would be willing to pay him 12+ million and more to come off the bench?
Mindboggling.
Hawk fans woud despise Okafor after 20 games here.
As for the Shaq issue, the ASG/Sund need to either act, or move on. As O’Brien said . . . throw an offer to him . . give him a few days to make a decision . . and if he hedges, announce publically that we’re moving on.
Shaq is the change of pace player that we need, when the game significantly slows down during the playoffs. A scrub like Pyzybilla doesn’t even come close to providing what Shaq will give us. People who think that “speed ball” will win in the playoffs, will be sadly mistaken. Defense, rebounding and half court efficiency is what wins in the playoffs. And Shaq would provide an upgrade in all 3 areas.
But this “saga” needs to be ended this week . . or we at least need to know that progress is being made one way or the other. If he doesn’t want to come here for the MLE, then there’s no reason to even keep the rumor going on. Just come out and say that we’re not interested in him anymore.

@Terrell, unless you have seen James play…I wouldn’t say too much…it is way too early to know if either of these guys will be able to translate their performance to the next level. It wasn’t just the people like myself and others on the blogs talking about James…everyone in Orlando was talking about James.
As I stated in all my previous blogs…I said…I thought JC2 could light it up…and he didn’t disappoint. If you are a fan of the games…you gotta give James his props…he was one of the top performers in Orlando. It just so happens he’s plays the SF positions…and that is a position of need for the Hawks…my point was…with his size…he could have challenged Marvin for some playing time.
Now that I can see the Hawks…I could care less…bring on the pentriagle. Teague will be deadly with the starters…Add in JC2 and Sy…now at leased you have some promising youth that can play the PG position…now can we please focus on the center position.
If the Hawks can get some serviceable help at the center position…they will be a very dangerous team…so I would continue to explore my options…however, I wouldn’t rule out signing Shaq. His intangibles’ could offset his cost…Just saying. lol

Well Sund is asleep at the wheel again, if we were considering signing Shaq & doing S&Ts for Chills, why didn’t we throw our hat in the Al Jefferson S&T which would formed a formidable front court for yrs, & teams like Miami would never be able to match up with us down low. Utah has beat us to the punch for two future 1st round picks.

From dallasbasketball.com;
“On the basis of his experience,’’ Nowitzki said of O’Neal, “he would be a great addition to our team. He is still a dominant center, and opens space for others.’’
So Dirk likes Shaq, and Shaq likes Mark Cuban. Is it a match? When do the Hawks move on?

@T3AMDIM3
Here is the only thing I read at espn Dallas.com:
Dirk Nowitzki had nice things to say about Shaquille O’Neal when the German media asked about the best big man of last generation. “On the basis of his experience, he would be a great addition to our team,” Dirk said, according to a translation posted on DallasBasketball.com. “He is still a dominant center, and opens space for others.” There’s at least a decent chance that Dirk was just offering empty praise when asked about a surefire Hall of Famer in the twilight of his career. Is Dirk saying similar things to Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson? That’s what matters. Based on the conversations I’ve had in recent weeks, Dirk would be in the minority among influential Mavs types if he really does want Shaq. The feeling is that a glacier-slow big man with major durability issues and a dominant ego would be more trouble than he’s worth. If that stance has changed, it smacks of a panic move.

The Hawks have already proven that this team can make it into the playoffs. The goal is to win a championship which means going through Orlando. They need one center who can slow Howard down (who can stop him?) without double-teams. Its that simple. Okafor is insufficient. They need Shaq.
I understand all the talk about youthful bigs, but for this Hawks team the future is now. Win a championship and then go find the big man for the future.

We need Shaq, Tolliver, Barnes, and Watson. How do we make this happen???
1. See if the Cavs will S&T Shaq for Bibby and whatever part of the trade exemption that we have.
2. See if the Warriors will accept Evans and a part of the trade exemption for Tolliver.
3. Sign Barnes and Watson with the MLE. Maybe we can get Watson with the bi-annual.

Here’s what may be going on with Shaq signing or not signing here.
He knows that the Hawks can only offer the MLE straight out, for his services. To get more money, Shaq has to seek a sign and trade.
If I remember the CBA correctly, ALL sign and trades must be for at least 3 years in length.
So even if Shaq will settle playing for the MLE, but wants more money, he could be pushing for a sign and trade to secure a 3 yr – 18 million deal. I would assume the Hawks wouldn’t want to make a 3 yr commitment at all. 2 yrs – 12 mill maybe . . . but not 3 yrs.
So that could possibly be the behind the scenes action that is taking place. But all of the places he can play are quickly drying up.
Hawks should make that 2 yr – 12 mill offer, and give him until Friday to decide. If there’s still no deal, give it up and let him piggyback to a potential title in Miami.

Any thoughts on the Hawks looking at a guy like Jarvis Hayes? He’s being rumored to be contacted by teams like the Lakers and possibly the Celtics. He could provide another shooter and would likely not be very expensive.

Question for MC / Najeh / Manny T / or / nire:
” the team ending up over the salary cap requires an exception. This is true even if the team is moving downward in salary. For example, if the salary cap is $50 million, a team has a team salary of $55 million, and they want to trade a $5 million player for a $4 million player, they still have to use an exception. Even though their team salary would be decreasing by $1 million, the fact that they would still be over the salary cap ($54 million) means that an exception is required.”

Dampier won’t STAY IN Charlotte. He’ll be released b/c that contract isn’t fully guaranteed. He’ll be back on the market. Then it is a question of where he wants to be. Dampier won’t sell as many tickets as Shaq, but he will be available for more games. I would not be shocked if he ends up with a playoff level team that offers him a 3 yr contract using the MLE.
@Grandad–I’ll look into what you’re talking about. Makes sense, but I’m not clear on why Larry Coon sez you need TPE when you decrease salary in a simultaneous trade that fits w/in the trade rules…i.e. the example of 4 mil for 5 mil fits regular trade rules.

SEAN WILLIAMS-If we signed Shaq, and I assume you’re on board with that, assuming he pans out, how long would you say he would be able to produce? I’ll guarantee you that within a yr or 2, we’d be right back where we are now trying to secure a decent backup to stop DHoward. With a trade for Okafor, we’d be set at the center position for the next 4yrs at least. And if Horford was lost for the season, or for an extended period of time, we’d definitely have a starting caliber center that’s capable of effectively taking his place.
Would you really want to depend on Shaq as your starting center? Haven’t you been paying attention? The Suns and Cavaliers have already tried that, and both teams dumped his butt after only 1 yr, along with their HC’s.
Too many of you are obsessed with DHoward, and the idea we absolutely must have a center that can single handedly stop him. You continue to act like MWoodson and his total lack of a DEF strategy, inability to adjust, and unwillingness to seek help and/or a solution, is still our HC. We how have a HC with a clue, and he’s hired LConner, an assistant coach who’s speciality is DEF.
We can use a combination of factors to contain DHoward and the Magic. We can start with a sound DEF scheme and approach, instead of expecting to get the job done by using the same failed switching DEF, and the same DEF limited PG. We can combine the use of multiple centers, and a PG that actually plays DEF, pressures the ball and limits penetration.
To be honest, I’d take that approach over signing Shaq any day of the week.

My response…WHAT?
nobody in the top 50 has an ass/to ratio that low… excuse me? teague step away from the ball.He blew that game against the grizzlies with a turnover at 83-83 with time running out. Thats why did was not used in critical times last year. .75 is just god awful.
Consider Jason kid is 4.67 assists to turnovers Or Rondo is 3.1. Come on hawks fans. You arent going very far with .75 controlling your point.
Problem with some fans is the mistake likability with talent. We need talent folk not popularity. Compare these stats league wide before you run off at the mouth people. Stop trying to diminish out lack of defense in the post to Howard. We aren t shutting down anybody, hence we cant play a have court game with out maintaining the post. And before you try and blame it on Woodson rotation. @Grandad…I hope this helps. Seems like there might be a slight error in that Q71 on the FAQs. Checked with Larry Coon via twitter. In the example, there is no need for an exception. If the spread was larger like your example w/Marvin & Thabeet then you do need the exception. Your scenario works from a rule standpoint. Not saying that the GMs are on board.

Note that you can also use the ESPN NBA Trade Machine to check out if a trade works based on NBA cap rules.
