Atlanta Hawks: Brad Miller still in play as center options dwindle

Hawks think Brad Miller is good fit for L.D.'s offense.

Hawks think Brad Miller is good fit for L.D.'s offense.

Las Vegas–It looks like the free-agent center situation finally is starting to shake out, with Atlanta’s (and Shaq’s) options dwindling:

– The Hawks are still in the running for Brad Miller.

“There is definitely mutual interest,” agent Mark Bartelstein said today. “Where that’s going to lead, it’s tough to say. There are a lot of things he’s looking at. Nothing has been decided.”

Boston and Miami also reportedly have been talking to Miller, but a return to Chicago is still a possibility. Bartelstein said Miller could make a decision by the end of the week.

The Hawks apparently think Miller would be a good fit in L.D.’s offense. He had been a good outside shooter for years but slipped in that area last season. So too did his defense and rebounding for that matter.

But Miller’s Synergy numbers in the post were pretty good at .87 points per possession on 204 possessions, suggesting he’s still tough around the basket. Actually, Miller is a pretty tough guy, period, and the Hawks probably could use some of that nastiness.

– Another Bartelstein client, Kwame Brown, also remains interested in the Hawks. Bartelstein said Brown has visits scheduled with a few teams but the Hawks aren’t among them. The Celtics liked Brown after working him out but apparently can’t offer him the kind of money he’s seeking after they gave their full mid-level to Jermaine O’Neal.

Brown has the body and athleticism to be a good defender but his opponent PER raises some questions. Interesting comments on BRown from Doc Rivers to A. Sherrod Blakely of NECN.com: “He’s a better athlete than I thought. I wouldn’t mind having him on our team, I can tell you that. He could help us.”

– Hawks target Zydrunas Ilgauskas is headed to the Heat. Some persuasion from LeBron convinced Big Z to reunite with him in Miami for a minimum deal with a player option for the second season.

– For some reason, there is still speculation that Shaq might join the Heat. Has everyone already forgotten how he torched the organization on his way to Phoenix? I checked in with some Miami peeps I can assure they haven’t forgotten down there. It looks like the Mavs are still interested in Shaq, but after re-signing Brendan Haywood they likely want him for a bench role.

Atlanta’s discussions with Shaq are still in the preliminary stages. My interpretation of that is Shaq is hedging on his money (remember, dude made $21 million last year) and accepting a bench role and is waiting to see what happens in free agency before committing to any team.

He better not wait too long if he wants to play for a winner. I’ve noticed that the reports about Shaq to the Spurs have quieted down. ESPN.com’s Marc Stein doubts that’s a real possibility because San Antonio isn’t interested in a “chemistry experiment.” I know the Hawks take pride that their guys don’t usually stir things up, so that’s a strike against Shaq.

Anthony Tolliver remains a possibility for the Hawks but he’s viewed as more of a power forward than center. Tolliver also reportedly is drawing interest from the Wizards and Jazz.

The hawks need a young star and a floor general with hart and chris paul is that guy, with the current roster the hawks have no true vocal leader and thats the reason for early exit every year come playoffS.

AL Horford is that true leader. He was just young. I’d be fine with Kwame Brown. All he needs to do is stand there and be big, get rebounds, and disturb the opposing center. Moving Horford to the 4 where he’ll thrive. Start Teague and we’ll be straight. I’d be fine with Shaq too. All he wants is 15 min a game during the regular season and maybe 20-25 in the playoffs.

The Heat don’t scare us..GO HAWKS!!!

Man if we dont get a center in here (shaq) soon I’m driving out there and choke somebody. Its bad enough we got a in house coach. The bottom line is we need somebody to stop howard and to be an enforcer when Wade and Co. comes down that lane. Brad Miller is also an option but we have got to get some weight under the basket. it was a crime to watch howard destroy us while he worked on his offensive game. He wouldn’t dare have that mentality against a proven center. we better get somebody close to 300 thatb can block a shot quick or we will watch a repeat of the broom series of the past two years.

the hawks need to go after danny granger with that future 1st rd. pick they got from the suns and send jamal crawford and bibby.we take back tj ford expiring 8.5 mill. contract.we my have 2 throw in mo. evans 2 make the contract match.then sign shag or b.miller.tj ford expires contract could help down the line if need to trade for the playoff push. i know everybody is pushing for the hawks to get a big but atl. need a true #2 scorer and not off the bench.that could put marvin on the bench were he will be more affected.granger can scorer the ball and the good good wing defender, that is what hawks going to need against team like orlando and the heats, bulls, celtics

Brad Miller is exactly what we don’t need as a Center. Dwight Howard will eat him alive. I will be so disappointed yet again if we don’t get a bonafide 7ft Center that plays Defense and rebounds, basically the opposite of Brad Miller

Calm down man! How many times do we have to tell you that CP3 is NOT cleared to play and has had a complete removal of one or both of his meniscus(.es). That means bone on bone – IF you are slow.
He hasn’t played since that surgery. And probably will need Micro-Fracture Surgery next season, and IF you are still – s l o w? Thaþ means out for next season.

You don’t trade Horford, Teague and Marvin for Speedy Claxton sittin’ on blocks!

I cant understand why every one keep saying move Al to PF. What about Josh, the best defender on the team. Like i said before atl need a wing man with the type offense we are going to this fix perfect AL and Josh on the floor 2gether.WITH TEAGUE getting into the lane which he will this year u need athelic like jsmooth big al. alot of passing and movement.

MC, didn’t Dallas add Tyson Chandler today to the mix with Haywood? Also, with the Jazz bringing in Al Jefferson with Millsap, hopefully they will leave Tolly alone. Shaq seems like he is out of many options… but I’m fearful that he will react to coming off the bench much like Ai did. He may say one thing at the contract signing, but once he is routinely missing the pre-game player introduction (while standing next to Jordan Crawford), I think there could be some significant issues.

Hey Mike, it appears that Miami is building a nice team down here. When the Big 3 was 1st signed, I thought Atlanta would still be better, because I didn’t think they could surround the Big 3 with anyone. After all, I figured in the NBA East Atlanta had the 2nd best (& highest paid) SG in JJ, the 2nd best PF in Josh, Horford is an All-Star and the team would be much deeper. But now that the Heat have added Udonis, Mike Miller, Big Z with more to come, I think the Hawks will have a tough time matching up with Miami. I agree with you about Shaq – I would be stunned if the Heat brought him back after he torched the place on his way out. “Wonder Boy” – I don’t think so. Keeping in mind that Atlanta is still a young team, if they bring in Shaq it would be a huge mistake. The chemistry would degenerate into something that smells like rotten eggs in no time. My 2 cents.

Big Z is a big time idiot and Prince James worshiper – has not he learned that chase LB does get him any closer to getting a ring.
No to Brad Miller – I’d rather trade for Okafor.

If the center being brought in isn’t better than Horford AND Zaza at guarding Dwight Howard, there’s no point in signing him. I am not convinced Brad Miller is that guy. He is a skilled offensive player, but offense — especially perimeter-oriented offense — is not what the Hawks need from a free-agent center. They are targeting a big man for one reason and one reason only, and that is to guard Howard.

Shaq may appear to be running out of options, but the longer the Hawks take and the lower his price tag gets, the more teams open up that will be willing to sign him at a lower rate. If the Hawks want him they need to act soon. I could easily see him end up in a Celtics uniform for the biannual exception if his price tag comes down that far.

It’s obvious the Hawks are not in win-now mode. You all can forget a legit 7 footer coming to Atl. The most they might do is Kwame Brown. We will see the same Hawks from last year trying to battle the likes of Orlando and Miami. The window of opportunity is closing fast. There is no one left to sign. The only option is to make a trade and they will have to give up something to get something. Shaq is the best option left but as you can see ASG will have to over spend to get him. In short…trade Marvin and Jamal for a real center or pay Shaq the money. Of course, the other option is to sign another useless 6-11 so-called center or simply do nothing.

The Hawks needs size and we also need minutes to let some of our young talent see the floor (Teague, JC2). So bringing in more Small Forwards, Guards is not Ideal unless you move Bibby, Mo Evans..which at this point is really not a great option, unless you can some how get Tony Parker without losing our core…and that is not going to Happen.

The Hawks should sign Shaq, Aminu from the Summer League, and lets keep this group together to see how they play with in LD;s offense. You never know people….Marvin, could have a break out year, and if Teague develops we have a good shot.

It doesn’t matter why would you give up a young All-Star and a young pg that could be a little general for just CP3 that has a lot of injuries. I wanted pull that trade never.
