Hawks think Brad Miller is good fit for L.D.'s offense.
Las Vegas–It looks like the free-agent center situation finally is starting to shake out, with Atlanta’s (and Shaq’s) options dwindling:
– The Hawks are still in the running for Brad Miller.
“There is definitely mutual interest,” agent Mark Bartelstein said today. “Where that’s going to lead, it’s tough to say. There are a lot of things he’s looking at. Nothing has been decided.”
Boston and Miami also reportedly have been talking to Miller, but a return to Chicago is still a possibility. Bartelstein said Miller could make a decision by the end of the week.
The Hawks apparently think Miller would be a good fit in L.D.’s offense. He had been a good outside shooter for years but slipped in that area last season. So too did his defense and rebounding for that matter.
But Miller’s Synergy numbers in the post were pretty good at .87 points per possession on 204 possessions, suggesting he’s still tough around the basket. Actually, Miller is a pretty tough guy, period, and the Hawks probably could use some of that nastiness.
– Another Bartelstein client, Kwame Brown, also remains interested in the Hawks. Bartelstein said Brown has visits scheduled with a few teams but the Hawks aren’t among them. The Celtics liked Brown after working him out but apparently can’t offer him the kind of money he’s seeking after they gave their full mid-level to Jermaine O’Neal.
Brown has the body and athleticism to be a good defender but his opponent PER raises some questions. Interesting comments on BRown from Doc Rivers to A. Sherrod Blakely of NECN.com: “He’s a better athlete than I thought. I wouldn’t mind having him on our team, I can tell you that. He could help us.”
– Hawks target Zydrunas Ilgauskas is headed to the Heat. Some persuasion from LeBron convinced Big Z to reunite with him in Miami for a minimum deal with a player option for the second season.
– For some reason, there is still speculation that Shaq might join the Heat. Has everyone already forgotten how he torched the organization on his way to Phoenix? I checked in with some Miami peeps I can assure they haven’t forgotten down there. It looks like the Mavs are still interested in Shaq, but after re-signing Brendan Haywood they likely want him for a bench role.
Atlanta’s discussions with Shaq are still in the preliminary stages. My interpretation of that is Shaq is hedging on his money (remember, dude made $21 million last year) and accepting a bench role and is waiting to see what happens in free agency before committing to any team.
He better not wait too long if he wants to play for a winner. I’ve noticed that the reports about Shaq to the Spurs have quieted down. ESPN.com’s Marc Stein doubts that’s a real possibility because San Antonio isn’t interested in a “chemistry experiment.” I know the Hawks take pride that their guys don’t usually stir things up, so that’s a strike against Shaq.
– Anthony Tolliver remains a possibility for the Hawks but he’s viewed as more of a power forward than center. Tolliver also reportedly is drawing interest from the Wizards and Jazz.

BRAD MILLER would be a good choice for the HAWKS. I like it.
ADAM MORISON to the WIZARDS? Well, they only need a #3 and an end of the bench guard to complete the squad with the addition of HILTON ARMSTRONG. A move designed for insurance purposes only.
McGEE is going to be the man, but my lord he’s got miles to go to learn the NBA game. I watched him drive to the hoop in Summer League after a JOHN WALL pass, and he tried to bring the ball up off his CHEST! And him having added three inches to his length since he was drafted at 19 (now 7′ 1″). Of course a shlub center blocked it. That happened several times. He doesn’t even know how to use the physical assets he has to advantage, and this after three years of tutelage – or not, maybe.
For those of you calling on the ASG to get McGEE, be glad it didn’t happen. You’ll see what I mean this coming year.

Ok- We need a back up center. We have a limited budget to work with and all of these over paid long contracts that these players are starting to sign and the players us bloggers want and are asking for is not going to happen. Plain and simple! We are over the cap. And we have lost money the last 3 to 4 years. We aren’t going over more than we are now into the luxury tax. It isn’t all about Sund not calling the shots. He has a budget to work with that was given to him.
We have a couple of options to get mid level players. And the suggestions on here aren’t logical.
No one wants Bibby and his contract trade or no trade. We need to stay put with Marvin and give him a chance. So that leave Mo. We need to hold on to Mo he also needs to be given a chance with more meaningful minutes.
That leaves us with 3 roster spots at most. And we have few dollars to spend. So logical suggestions are below.
1. Find Garrett Siler. Invite him to training camp and give him a fair shot at earning a job/ spot.
2. Get a center for the minimum (list below)
3. Get another PF for the minimum and maybe a guard.
Choices are not there for a big man with out a trade. And here are last year salaries.
Center-
Theo Ratliff- $825, 497
Brad Miller- $12,250,000. He isn’t going to take MLE so we need to move on

Rasheed Wallace did about as good a job on Howard as anybody had done all year hands down. They frustrated him in the post by playing him straight up and not letting him get a deep post position. When the help defense did come, Howard was either stripped or he kicked the ball out. When he kicked the ball out, the help defender quickly recovered. It’s all about effort and fight. We had neither in that series. No amount of size can give you that. IMO Brad Miller nor Shaq is the answer. And for the love of God not Kwame Brown. He has plywood for hands. Worst hands in the league. They must be the size of the guy on the Burger King commercial because he can’t hold on to the ball to save his life.

Kwame Brown will do although I wanted to see more activity from the hawks front office since the draft. Kendrick Perkins averaged something like 6 pts and 6 rebs in the series against ORL……and was very effective on Howard. I believe that perimeter defense is our most serious problem against that team. If we can get a big man who can put a body on Howard without getting fouled out for 30 min a night we will be straight so long as we play some defense on the perimeter. That means light on the ZaZa and really light on the Bibby. We can’t be trying trying to hide people’s defensive weaknesses against a team that can light it up from three like they can.

Brad Miller would be a good sign. There is always more than one way to skin a cat. We all know DHoward is foul prone, and he’s basically the sum total of Orlando’s DEF. Without him patrolling the middle, the rest of their players lack of DEF ability is exposed. That means you can attack him in the lane, pull him out of the lane, or both. BMiller might not be able to stop him or match up him physically, but his shooting ability could force DHoward out of the lane.
That was the key to the OFF success of the original BAD BOY Pistons with BLambier at center. Hawk fans have got to start thinking outside the box, and learn to embrace different of multiple ways of dealing with an issue, rather than focusing on just one unreasonable solution. It’s just not reasonable for us to invest the kind on money Shaq is demanding, along with the negative baggage he brings, in hopes he’ll be capable and healthy enough to contain DHoward.
The negative baggage Shaq brings with him where ever he’s gone has caused him to wear out his welcome, burn bridges, and create animosity at every stop he’s made(Orlando, LA, Miami, Phoenix and Cleveland). At his last 2 stops, the teams actually regressed with him in the lineup, which prompted both teams to fire their HC’s and send him packing after only one yr.
The combination of EGO and diminished skills has caused him to think far too much of himself and his actual abilities. As a result, he’s now become a whining, injury prone, disruptive player that’s living in the past, as far as his skill level and overall talents are concerned. Unfortunately, a lot of our fans seem to share his delusion about what he’s actually capable of doing for the Hawks.
Let his ego driven butt end up where ever he wants, but not here. We can sign 2 athletic big bodies for less money than he’s demanding. With 2 additional big bodies on the bench, to go along with Zaza and backup Horford, we can use depth and strategy to deal with which ever center(s) we have to encounter.

I wouldn’t have a problem with us signing KBrown and DJ MBenga. Instead of using up our trade exemption to meet Shaq’s demands, we could probably get away with using only a portion of it to sign them both. In addition to Zaza, it would give us 2 athletic, physical, 7 footers with the potential to do a good job off rebounding, playing DEF and blocking shots coming off the bench.
Their athleticism also allows them to fit LDrew’s uptempo style of motion OFF much better than Shaq. And more importantly, with them instead of Shaq, we won’t have to worry about ego issues, disruption, and what I call the MBibby syndrome, where his skills suddenly disappear and he becomes a liability.

I think Brad Miller, Tolliver and either Brewer / J. Howard / Barnes would be enough to make this team extremely competitive. We would just need to convince some of these guys to come here for part of the MLE or in a sign and trade (Using the trade exception and Mo). Nobody that we add now is going to get more than 20 minutes maximum a game barring injuries. Our core for better or worse is our core. Our 2 deep would be:
PG – JT, Bibby
SG – JJ, JC, JC2
SF – Marvin, Brewer/Barnes/Howard
PF – Smith, Tolliver
C – Horford, Zaza, Miller
Also, whoever compared Sund to Steinbrenner is a joke. Different sports and different positions. No salary cap in baseball so Steinbrenner can spend all he wants plus it was his own money. Sund is limited by the cap and the budget set by ASG…when you are an employee, you lose your job pretty quickly when you blow by your budget.

Somebody said CP3 is not great. You definitely have not seen this man play basketball. He is the best, “THE BEST” ball handler in the NBA. He can shoot, pass, rebound, and lead. I would say the NBA top 7 players are 1) Lebron, 2) Kobe, 3) Carmelo, 4) CP3, 5) Wade, 6) Howard, 7) Duncan. Duncan would be closer to the top but he is starting to show wear and tear for carrying SA for so long without another big man. Watch out for Demarcus Cousins – he is a beast and might become the most dominant big man behind Dwight Howard.
If th hawks can add anyone of these players (besides Duncan) it would be a definite improvement. I would give up anybody but Josh Smith because that is who CP3 would hook up with on a consistent basis for the trow down monster jam.

this is a great lineup so that we teague shredding the defense and having TWO dynamic scorers to kick out to, which will spread the floor and open up lanes for al and josh slashin to the basket. plus our second unit would be quite the team as well with our proven sixth man, and marvin was at his greatest coming off the bench at unc, bibby running the point, and big shaq being big shaq. i really like this and believe we would have what it takes without spending alot of money and without getting rid of our core players. just moving them around a bit. what do you guys think?

I am an Augusta State MBA alum, and I would love to have fellow ASU alum Garrett Siler playing for the Hawks, but the guy is a project. He was not all that great in exhibition games that I saw him in. We like the idea of a 7 ft C so much, that we but into anything. Just drop it…
Along with this Kwame Brown mess too. Shaq wants too much money. Brad Miller would be ok, but he may be out of our range too. Also, Anthony Tolliver is a back-up PF… that’s all…

OK,
Bibby should do a pretty decent job as a backup.
He has experience, good court vision and his legs will hold up well and be effective in short shifts which will allow him to be sharp again from the outside.
Last year Bibby had in some games, a few very good first two quarters scoring in bunches (12/15 points) and keeping guys involved only to see his legs going completely dead on the second half.
As a backup I think he will be productive and important and hopefully he will take his conditioning more serious this summer as well since it was clear that he was about 15-20lbs too heavy last year.

Was Chris Grant in the front office when the Hawks selected Marvin? The only way I would consider that trade is if it were only for 1 guaranteed year (or team option for Shaq’s 2nd year). I could see some value of having close to $20M expire next summer (between Jamal, Mo and Shaq). But I wouldn’t consider it if Shaq is looking for a rock-solid 2-year deal.

If Hawks are not going to spend any money on free agents, why wait to the end of free agency for leftovers?
Why not get aggressive and send J.J. out to recruit these guys like Miami did and offer the guys a contract at the beginning of free agency with the money you do have? Maybe one of the free agent bigs, pgs, or whoever Hawks are recruiting will bite and take a lesser contract to play with a good playoff team?

Forget about a center. We would wind up with somebody who is on their way out the NBA door. Keep Alade Aminu and give him minutes instead of parking him at the end of the bench. Fresh legs, fresh attitude and someone who comes from a program that advocates defense and running. Anybody remember Chris Bosh from the same program? This kid certainly has a similar body style and he works hard. I could live with 6′ 10″ running the floor with teague and Joe. How about we get some of these Tech players who always seem to wind up going somewhere else and having good careers. We have an opportunity to steal one here. He should have been drafted. Someone blew it amomg all the NBA teams.

It looks like Dallas has the right idea and is doing what I have suggested for the Hawks. Get 2 athletic, shot blocking, DEF minded 7 footers to get the job done. All Hawk fans seem to be concerned with is stopping DHorward and Orlando. If we intend to win an NBA championship in the very near future, we’d better start concerning ourselves with the Lakers.
Remember them, the team that’s won the last 2 NBA titles? Teams have obviously found ways to stop DHoward and the Magic, without Shaq, and without having a physical or equally dominant center.
VALVA74-your spot on analysis of MBibby reminded me of something I had forgotten. Yesterday, I read an article that had a comment that said Bibby actually asked Woodson to give Teague more mins, and the person that made that comment was Teague. I bring that up to illustrate Woodson’s unbelievable stubbornness, and his downright unwillingness to listen to anyone on anything. This, coupled with other personal issues and bias’, are constant distractions our current Hawk players won’t have to deal with or overcome with LDrew.
I also think Sund and the ASG’s original intent of wanting to sign a starting quality center has been abandoned, especially after finding out how much it now costs to sign one. I now think plan B is to wait and see how the market plays out and go after quantity rather than quality.
Having 4 centers gives you 2o fouls and allows you to play one on one and wear an opponent down without double teaming. The idea is to shut down 4 players and make only one player carry the OFF load. The LBird led Celtics successfully used that strategy against MJordon and the Bulls, before SPippin came along. Here’s my take on how we can deal with our top competition in the East.
ORLANDO-play straight man to man DEF without double teaming, except as a change of pace. Pressure the ball, shutdown their perimeter players, and let foul prone DHoward work himself to death trying to carry the OFF/DEF load.
MIAMI-play a lot of zone DEF to keep DWade and LeBron out of the lane, which limits their assists, our fouls, and keeps them off the FT line. You make CBosh, OHaslem or MMiller beat you. Our OFF should be good enough to hold its own against both teams.
BOSTON-with KPerkins out for a while, RWallace possibly retiring, and them being a yr older, as well as the match up problems they already have with us, we should prevail over them.
Another good thing about having LDrew as our HC is, we might still have some complaints during the season, but it certainly won’t be about what the player WON’T DO, or WON’T BE ALLOWED TO DO.

Based upon his performance to date Marvin needs new scenery, but is it wise to swap him for a one-year rental of Shaq? Don’t think so. If half a season (to the trade deadline) in LD’s offense happens to improve Marvin’s trade value (even modestly), then we will have regretted sending him off in summer for a mere one-year rental of Shaq. Not cool. The difference between what Shaq wants and the MLE is likely less than $2M, so in effect we’ll be sending Marvin off for less than $2M. Gotta be a much better way to bridge the gap between the MLE and Shaq’s salary requirements.
If we’re attempting to clear cap space for next summer, who are we pursuing? Please, don’t say Horford; he’s our RFA for crying out loud. No, it’s the summer of ‘12 that should be our target, and you know for whom, don’t you? A 2-year deal for Shaq this summer is just about right.

The Nuggets are not wasting any time. They have agreed to vet minimum deals with Shelden Williams and Anthony Carter (so scratch him off as a potential third PG), after signing Al Harrington. If they can stay healthy, the Nuggets will be deep.
newkid,
Marvin will make $7 mil or so per year. Given Drew’s offense, dont you think we could find other SFs to do what Marvin does (or will do) for a cheaper price?
As for the sign and trade with Cleveland, if I’m the Hawks, I would be interested in Shaq and Jamario Moon (a backup SF) for Marvin Williams and Mo Evans. I would love it if Cleveland adds a future first rounder. And then I would sign Matt Barnes with some of the MLE.

Not sure we know what Marvin will do under LD’s scheme. Therein lies my concern. Pilot-test the cat in the new system until the trade deadline, then make a more informed decision. I WAS on the ‘Get Shaq Plan’ but now would rather keep our core guys who have matured well together and who has built much chemistry. I believe Woodson was the cause of the chemistry breakdown toward the end of his run here. If our last and only choices at center are Shaq(old) and Brad Miller(less talented than our ‘PF’ center Al Horford), than I say “pass”. I would take my chances with Hendrex (6′9, 255), James Augustine (6′10, 235) and A. Aminu (6′10,235)..Yeah I know neither one of those guys are true centers but Im hoping if they can continue to do well in the summer league games, they could come out being like the Glen Davis’s(6′9, 289) and Leon Powe(6′8, 240), and K. Perkins who is 6′10, 280 and we know how he held his own against DHoward. Glen Davis held his own against the DHoward and Pau G throw-out the season. After watching the Larry Drew Mic’d up practice video, I believe Larry could be the Doc Rivers to the new, up and coming players in the draft such as the guys mentioned and also to Teague and JC2.
