Atlanta Hawks: Brad Miller still in play as center options dwindle

Hawks think Brad Miller is good fit for L.D.'s offense.

Hawks think Brad Miller is good fit for L.D.'s offense.

Las Vegas–It looks like the free-agent center situation finally is starting to shake out, with Atlanta’s (and Shaq’s) options dwindling:

– The Hawks are still in the running for Brad Miller.

“There is definitely mutual interest,” agent Mark Bartelstein said today. “Where that’s going to lead, it’s tough to say. There are a lot of things he’s looking at. Nothing has been decided.”

Boston and Miami also reportedly have been talking to Miller, but a return to Chicago is still a possibility. Bartelstein said Miller could make a decision by the end of the week.

The Hawks apparently think Miller would be a good fit in L.D.’s offense. He had been a good outside shooter for years but slipped in that area last season. So too did his defense and rebounding for that matter.

But Miller’s Synergy numbers in the post were pretty good at .87 points per possession on 204 possessions, suggesting he’s still tough around the basket. Actually, Miller is a pretty tough guy, period, and the Hawks probably could use some of that nastiness.

– Another Bartelstein client, Kwame Brown, also remains interested in the Hawks. Bartelstein said Brown has visits scheduled with a few teams but the Hawks aren’t among them. The Celtics liked Brown after working him out but apparently can’t offer him the kind of money he’s seeking after they gave their full mid-level to Jermaine O’Neal.

Brown has the body and athleticism to be a good defender but his opponent PER raises some questions. Interesting comments on BRown from Doc Rivers to A. Sherrod Blakely of NECN.com: “He’s a better athlete than I thought. I wouldn’t mind having him on our team, I can tell you that. He could help us.”

– Hawks target Zydrunas Ilgauskas is headed to the Heat. Some persuasion from LeBron convinced Big Z to reunite with him in Miami for a minimum deal with a player option for the second season.

– For some reason, there is still speculation that Shaq might join the Heat. Has everyone already forgotten how he torched the organization on his way to Phoenix? I checked in with some Miami peeps I can assure they haven’t forgotten down there. It looks like the Mavs are still interested in Shaq, but after re-signing Brendan Haywood they likely want him for a bench role.

Atlanta’s discussions with Shaq are still in the preliminary stages. My interpretation of that is Shaq is hedging on his money (remember, dude made $21 million last year) and accepting a bench role and is waiting to see what happens in free agency before committing to any team.

He better not wait too long if he wants to play for a winner. I’ve noticed that the reports about Shaq to the Spurs have quieted down. ESPN.com’s Marc Stein doubts that’s a real possibility because San Antonio isn’t interested in a “chemistry experiment.” I know the Hawks take pride that their guys don’t usually stir things up, so that’s a strike against Shaq.

Anthony Tolliver remains a possibility for the Hawks but he’s viewed as more of a power forward than center. Tolliver also reportedly is drawing interest from the Wizards and Jazz.

“Kwame has the body to bang against Howard and he is from ATL so he will be motivated.”

oh naaaaaw bruh.. dont pin him on us.. dude isnt from Atlanta or the metro area for that matter. he’s from Brunswick, Ga. tell a friend..

sure, maybe he will be motivated in a return to Ga. does that make him a legit # 1 overall pick.. there isn’t enough motivation in the world. doubt it. i still believe he can be a serviceable big for a long time though. id take him over Miller. to add much needed quality depth.

Kwame went to my wife’s highschool (Glynn Academy in Brunswick) so I am pulling for him and have followed his career. That’s why I know he won’t be able to help the Hawks. Remember the goal is not to gain a serviceable big man for the long term. The goal is to win a championship… And the time is now.

THEN THE HEAD COACH GETS BLAMED WHICH IS UNFAIR.RICK SUND IS TERRIBLE.EVERYONE SEEMS TO THINK HE USING STRATEGY.HE’S JUST PLAIN LAZY.THERE IS NO STRATEGY ABOUT HIM.SINCE HE’S BEEN THE GM, HE’S DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.A COACH IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PRODUCT HE HAS ON THE FLOOR.WE DON’T HAVE THE PERSONEL NOW TO BEAT MIAMI, BOSTON, ORLANDO AND POSSIBLY MILWAUKEE IN A PLAYOFF SERIES.BUT IS SUND DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT? NO. HE’S SITTING ON HIS BUTT WITH A CELL PHONE STUCK IN HIS EAR AND LETTING TEAMS JUMP AHEAD OF US.I’M GROWING TIRED OF HIM.

At this point the pickings are slim. We clearly werent serious about addressing out deficiencies. This wont be a banner year so if you got salt and vinegar get them at the ready. Heck you may want to bite down on a bullet! It wont be pretty this year.

I suggested Brad Miller a long time ago. He would be a good fit and he is athletic. Howard eats up everyone, so no knock there. B Miller can also shoot the lights out. I really hope the Bulls keep him, but he wouldn’t be bad in Atlanta. Also Jamal crawford should start…period. We have a guy who can put up 20 off the bench..he needs to start!!! Bring Teague of the bench.

Kwame had potential. Jordan broke his spirit. Never been the same.
*Kwame 6-10, w-span, shorter than Marv.
LD prefers Brad Miller, that’s good enough for me.

Shaq’s not gonna run a motion offense.

People calling for:
Kwame & Barnes, we must do better than that.

Our new nemesis is going to take more than a burly center.

Tolliver = 6-7, we have plenty of those. [nothing against him personal]

Marc – mentioned Troy Murphy
Would be great in LD’s offense. [expiring contract as well]

One note:
Miller 4 yrs. younger than Shaq.

Gotta go, McCann just doubled in 3 runs.

Oh Yeah…..Almost forgot…..Thanks MannyT…..!!!

From RealGM:

If the Mavericks are unable to reach a deal with Al Harrington, they could turn to free agent Anthony Tolliver.

The Bulls, Lakers, Warriors, Jazz and Hawks are also interested in Tolliver.

Grandad,

Motion offenses can be run from a 5 out set, to a 4 out-1 in set, & to a 3 out-2 in set. With Shaq, the Hawks would probably run 4 out-1 in according who was in the game at the time.

As far as Tolliver goes, the Hawks need a swing player that can play SF and PF according to who was in the game. Tolliver would be able to do that better than Marvin or Josh!

LOL . . I guess he’s the new obsession amongst Hawk fans.

I dont think Hawks would sign a PG. Not when they have Teague, Bibby, Jamal, and Joe who can all handle the ball.

They could sign a wing, but I doubt it too, becuase Marvin, Mo Evans and JJ will see time at SF.

I think Rick is focused only on bigs (my two cents).

My two cents is that the Hawks will have to use Bibby, Evans, Marvin, Zaza, TPE, bi-annual, and the MLE to get any players that are going to improve their line up. I’m still considering Shaq, K. Brown, Tolliver, M. Barnes, Livingston, and JC Watson as possibilities according who they trade to get a big in a S&T.

Out of all to choose from, I like Anthony Tolliver. And according to rumors, Tollvier is looking at the Hawks. He had some double doubles at Center last year for Golden State and can play some solid defense. WE DO NOT NEED BRAD MILLER. What are the Hawks thinking? He is a waste of space and money. Get Tolliver and be done with it. He is young and will be able to run in this offense that LD is wanting to run.

Here is the link to the rumor that Tolliver is talking to the Hawks.

Blessed are the poor Atlanta Spirit, for their money is not for the Association.

Blessed are those Hawks fans who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit Shaq

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
for they will be filled with Chic Fil-A and Vitamin Water.

Blessed are the merciful Heat, for they shall show the Hawks mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see the Lakers win the championship again.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of David Stern.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of Free Agency, for theirs is the kingdom of Miami.

Blessed are you when people insult you on the blog, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Rick Sund. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in the playoffs, for in the same way they persecuted the Hawks who were before you.

Tolliver does a decent job down low, but one of his assets is that he stretches the floor. In 46 games, he made 50 3pters. In 81 games, Marvin made 40 3pters.

Remember, the Hawks were interested in Big Z at the deadline, and big Z is not a banger. If he was, then Cleveland would not have signed Shaq.

And although I like Tolliver, I dont think he is the answer to our need at center. I would sign Tolliver to play spot minutes at PF and center, but I would still sign a wide body.

It is being reported that Miami is close to signing Juwan Howard (who did a decent job last year).

Woodson planned to give Teague a chance to supplant Bibby, and that hasn’t changed now that Drew is the coach. Teague said Bibby told him he would push Teague, but wouldn’t be upset if he took his starting spot.

“At the end of the year he came up to me and was like: ‘Young fella, I’m getting older. I asked them to play you [more] last year, but this year it’s your opportunity.’”
