Atlanta Hawks: Childress sign-and-trade in works (UPDATE: Hawks, Suns agree to trade)

The Hawks have agreed to a sign-and-trade that would send forward Josh Childress to Phoenix for a second-round pick and a trade exception, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the deal was “on the verge” of completion. Childress would sign with Phoenix for six years and at least $30 million, according to the report.

If Childress signs a deal for those terms, Atlanta’s trade exception would be worth half the amount of his first-year salary since he would become a base-year compensation player. The exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirement.

Atlanta drafted Childress with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2004 draft. He played four seasons with the Hawks before opting to sign a free-agent contract with Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. He has until Thursday to opt out of the final season of that three-year, $20 million deal.

At least he would be off the books. I feel like ASG has been weary of making any moves without knowing whether or not he is going to take the QO. Still sad to see a lottery pick leaving for little more than cap relief and a 2nd rounder. Ask Michael Beasley how that feels. Wouldn’t have minded having him, but I’d rather have a lockdown defender for the 2 and 3.

No, we get a 2nd round pick that we can use on a guy who will also play overseas and never see our roster, promising as they might look. They’ll spin it with the “cap space” problem.

What’s our next move – Help for Al? Where’s the update now that we solved the guard situation without improvement.

From the previous blog:

“I’m not even sure I understand the whole concept of
how trade exceptions are generated to begin with?”

A trade exception is just a chunk of cap space. Over-the-cap teams are supposed to make dollar for dollar trades, but under-the-cap teams don’t have this restriction. When a free agent from an over-the-cap team signs with an under-the-cap team, the over-the-cap team can elect to receive cap space equaling that player’s contract instead of players whose salaries match.

In this case, Amare Stoudemire went from Phoenix (an over-the-cap team) to New York (an under-the-cap team), signing a contract worth $20 million annually. New York is under the cap and has no restriction and can sign Amare outright, but if Phoenix wants to sign-and-trade him, they have to take back $20 million in annual salary because they are over the cap. Instead of taking back salary, though, Phoenix sign-and-traded him for $20 million in cap space which allows them to get around the regular cap rules; this is why it’s called a trade “exception”.

Phoenix is now using this chunk of cap space to send Leandro Barbosa (who makes $7 million annually) for Hedo Turkoglu (who makes $11 million annually). Normally they can’t do this, but they ate into $4 million of that trade exception to make this deal work; since Toronto is also over the cap, that $4 million of trade exception goes to them, for them to use in a future trade. Next, they are signing Childress for $6 million annually, which eats into a corresponding $6 million of that trade exception; since Atlanta is over the cap, that $6 million comes to Atlanta for the Hawks to use in a future trade. This means Phoenix now have a remaining $10 million of cap space with which they can get around the normal salary cap rules.

I may be off on the numbers here and there, but that’s basically how a trade exception works.

Najeh Davenpoop

July 12th, 2010
12:24 am

Also from the previous blog:

The restriction on trade exceptions is that they expire a year after they are created; so a year after the day Amare signed his contract, the trade exception will expire. (At least that’s how I understand it; it may be a year after the trade exception is acquired for each team, which would give the Hawks and Raptors more time to use their exceptions than Phoenix.) So anything the Hawks want to do with that exception would have to be done before next year’s free agency period. Usually teams use their exceptions before that year’s trade deadline.

I don’t think so. I think the Hawks get the full value of Childress’ annual salary, which would be $6 million. If someone knows for a fact that I’m wrong, feel free to correct me, but BYC is only supposed to apply to players who have already signed a contract within the past year, not players who are getting sign-and-traded.

i_am_soulstar

The trade exception is extremely valuable, especially for a team over the cap. If the exception is 6 million, that means the Hawks can trade a Hawks player making 7 million and the trade exception for another player making 13 million.

OR the Hawks can outright work a sign-and-trade for a player and send the trading team the trade exception for a player who has that value, or throw in pieces to make it work.

It’s very valuable for a team in the current position of the Hawks.

And Childress’ 4.8 QO comes off the books finally! Bittersweet I suppose.

Patience, everyone patience..Chills did nothing for us being in greece and now that he wants back in the NBA, he wants nothing to do with us. We may not be getting anything back from Phoenix, but with the cap relief and a draft pick, we could trade those for whomever Sund has his eye on. Sund may have talked about possible trades/players he could get as FA but needed extra cash for them. He shopped Chills around to see who would give Sund what he needed and Phoenix took the bait. All we need to do now is see what surprise is waiting for us Hawks fans under the ‘x-mas in July’ tree!!

BYC- Base Year Compensation.

The short version is, if a player is BYC, the team trading the player is only credited for half of the player’s salary.

Najeh Davenpoop

July 12th, 2010
12:35 am

“I’m ignorant whats BYC?”

Long story short, if you re-sign or sign-and-trade a guy, and his new contract is worth more than 20% per year than his old contract, you can only trade him for half the actual value of his contract for the first 6 months of his new deal.

Childress got paid $3.6 million in 2007-08 and is getting paid $6 million annually under his new contract. Since this is more than a 20% raise, he can only be traded for $3 million in salary for the first six months of his new deal.

Disregard my 12:27 AM post. Childress IS a BYC player.

Long version of BYC:

Assuming a team is over the salary cap, a team can take in more salary than they send out only if it comes within 125% + $100k of the incoming figure. In other words if a team is sending out a player making $10 million, they can take in as much as $12.6 million but no more. (Note: This doesn’t apply for trade exceptions.)

Any raise over 20% makes a player BYC, meaning the team sending out the player is only credited for half of the player’s salary (or their prior year’s compensation, whichever is greater). That means if a player signed a contract starting at $10 million, the league would consider the Hawks’ outgoing number as $5 million. Factoring in the 125% + $100k cushion, the most they would be able to take in for the player would be $6.35 million.

“Now we can offer Shaq more money then the mle ( roughly up to 3 mil more ) ”

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure the MLE and the trade exception can’t be combined. The MLE allows you to sign one league-average salary when you’re above the cap. The trade exception only allows you to trade for more salary than you ship out when you’re over the cap. I don’t think MLEs can be used in trades the way trade exceptions must be used.

Najeh Davenpoop

July 12th, 2010

The team has the right to choose which of its available exceptions to use to sign a player. However, teams may not combine exceptions, or combine an exception with cap room, in order to sign a player. For example, a team with a $5 million Mid-Level exception and a $2 million in cap room may not combine them to sign a player for $7 million.

TRADED PLAYER EXCEPTION — This exception is used for trades, and cannot be used to sign free agents.

In other words, the Hawks’ $3 million trade exception can be combined with other assets in trade(s), but this is SEPARATE from the mid-level exception, which can be used to sign player(s) outright in free agency.

So basically, the most the Hawks can offer Shaq to sign outright is still the mid-level exception. If they want to pay him more than that they have to work out a sign-and-trade with Cleveland, and send back an equal amount of salary plus the trade exception if they choose. So if they want to pay Shaq $8 million per year for example, they can send back $5 million in salary and the trade exception.

I hope Hollinger is right, but everything that I’m seeing on the salary cap FAQ website leads me to believe he’s wrong about the Hawks’ end. The Raptors getting the $2.7 million trade exception sounds right since neither Barbosa or Turkoglu is BYC, but Childress from what I can tell is BYC.

The only way I can see Childress NOT being BYC is if there’s some obscure rule regarding players like him who miss a certain amount of time. Maybe for cap purposes their cap hold is used in the calculation rather than the last annual salary they drew. Hopefully for the Hawks that is the case.

If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we’ll call this initial deal “Trade #1″), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a “Trade Exception”. Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.

Here is something that is not allowed: A team has a $5 million player and a $1 million Traded Player exception from a previous trade, and wants to add the Traded Player exception to the 125% plus $100,000 margin from their $5 million player ($6,350,000), in order to trade for a player making $7,000,000. This cannot be done.

Typical Hawks. Nothing like adding that great center and point guard named Cap Room. It won’t be long before the franchise will be back to their old ways of losing 50 to 60 games a year. Don’t buy tickets to enrich these horsecrap owners. The only chance for this franchise is a new, decent owner. Of course one would have to go back 40 years to Ben Kerner to find the last good owner for this trainwreck franchise.

Well, I stand partially corrected. My 1:39 post quoting the salary cap FAQ website is correct, but in the case of the Hawks’ pursuit of Shaq, it hurts Cleveland, not us. The Hawks can trade Bibby ($5.5 mil) for Shaq if he wants to get paid $8.5 mil for example, but Cleveland will not get to turn around and use that $3 million trade exception.

I agree with you that the offseason/FA just started and there is still plenty of time to improve from last years team that won 53 games… but, so far, even you would have to admit that there have been some head-scratchers so far for the Hawks this offseason… The only thing that all Hawks can agree with is, Jordan Crawford is a heckuva pickup at the end of the 1st round. That’s it.

Why are you people stressing and growing grey hairs about this joke of a team. They show what they thought about you when they signed the I could care less if they show up or not OVERPAID 120 million $ man back. SHAQ would be a fool in he comes here and ride the bench. What good is winning 50+ games and getting destroyed in the playoffs two years straight going seven games to a one man Miami Heat team and going seven games to an underman Bucks team and getting embarrassed in the second round sweeps. This team might have won 53 games last year in a weak eastern conference but I highly doubt they would even win 45 this upcoming year. The Eastern Conference will indeed be highly competitive this year here is my prediction.

1. Miami Heat (it doesn’t matter who play with the superpowers those 3 along will destroy the East
2. Orlando Magic ( if anybody can upset the Heat than its them)
3. Chicago Bulls ( Boozer now Kyle Kover give them a solid starting 5)
4. Boston Celtics (They will be going through the motions of the season they are built for the playoffs
5. Milwaukee Bucks ( Bogot returning will make them a solid team with a chip on their shoulder
6. Atlanta Hawks (they wouldn’t listen to Woody what make U think they would listen to LD)
7. Charlotte Bobcats ( Larry Brown guys just might up seed the Hawks)
8. Washington Wizards ( Wall, Arenas and Yi will do some damage this year)

John .. . what you may see . . is Lebron become a souped-up Magic Johnson. Wade will be the top scorer, Bosh will be the 20 pt guy on the frontline, but Lebron could possibly average 10+ assists a game.

I think that is Lebron’s transformation . . to become the top assist guy in the league, while still having the ability to score 20 ppg.

Wade is more of the Kobe/Jordan type closer. Bosh is the Gasol type that gives them scoring and rebounding. And whomever is the designated shooter on that team ( Mike Miller or somebody ), is going to get wide open looks when teams go into panic mode trying to slow down one of those 3 guys.

Just don’t be surprised if Lebron’s scoring average dips significantly ( 20 – 22 ppg ), but his assists increase dramatically ( 10 – 12 apg )

John

@north…I’d agree with that. Wade is a good closer…but he’s not on the level of Kobe and Jordan. And Bosh, who I’ve always liked since his one year at GT (still irritates me he didn’t stay longer…lol). I do think they’re going to be good this year, and even better as they go along…however, they have no match for Howard…they can’t match with Boston’s frontline…and they certainly have nowhere near a match for Gasol and Bynum in L.A. So again, another ring for Kobe.

The Hawks have a great team, but they need to pursue Shaq, number one, and i’m not sure on what they will have to do for that (get joe johnson to sign for less ala lebron and wade etc.), trade childress, and if we have to trade one of our guys perhaps Marvin.. but Marvin is a good player and has alot of room for improvement.

I don’t understand how dysfunctional the hawks ownership/management has been for decades, please take some lessons from mr john shuerholz and the atlanta braves.

there is no excuse to be throwing away first round draft picks.

if we make this happen, we can win championships. if not, last resort, i will agree that we could soon slip back to having losing seasons and a trainwreck roster year after year.

sign shaq, and there is no excuse because we have the roster/talent.

people are hard on the hawks, the series against the magic was an ugly way to end an otherwise GREAT year. they have made the playoff’s the past 3 years. the magic is the only team that gives them problems, and with shaq guarding vince carter and dwight howard -this is just what we need.

We are over the cap, so we don’t get any cap room.
We just stay 6M under the Tax instead of 1M, and have our MLE.
Basically it’s just our owners not wanting to spend as much as they can to improve the team.

They could have match, and use the MLE (and pay some tax), and trade him later if he’s not the best fit.

Second they had a good team but they had fundamental execution problems with there half court offensive sets. What they really need is a proven offensive coach (assistant at least) somebody that can help the ball move and get easy shots. And don’t forget that if they do get Shaq WHO IS GOING TO PLAY THE SMALL FORWARD JOSH SMITH!!!!!! Look hope the coaching is better and let Jeff Teagues start (he could be another Rondo) Mo Williams isn’t the answer for the Hawks. I doubt anyone thinks we’ll lose 50-60 games. We’ll certainly be a playoff team again next year, but what’s disappointing is that so far we are merely the exact same team as last year, which could hardly win any playoff games at all. No one is complaining about getting worse, we’re just complaining that we aren’t getting BETTER. We have to get much better if we want to contend with the teams that have drastically improved this offseason such as Miami, Chicago, and Milwaukee.

Apparently, there is a plan and a philosophy. We may not need to over-react by signing Shaq if he isn’t a good fit for the team and is a Dwight-stopper ONLY. At 1st, I was down w/Shaq signing, but the more I think about it, the more it seems not to be a great fit with the foundation of players and philosophy already laid. Shaq’s presence failed to bring trophies to CLE and PHX the last 2 years, and in hindsight, probably was a poor philisophical fit for their teams (as constructed at the time). We don’t need to make the same error in judgement just based on his size, his past glory and the spectre of D. Howard dunking on us regularly.
Chills apparently doesnt want to be in ATL anymore and had NO PLANS to do so, we at least should reap some return for his rights. If he is disgruntled, no sense in forcing him to be a Hawk. That is a no-win for everybody. Michael Beasley (No. 2 pick from ‘08) got sent to MIN for beans after 2 years just to free up cap space for the SuperFriends … so if we got 4 good years out of Chills to lay the foundation of what we have now and get near-term trade relief and a future 2nd round pick, so be it.

Wolves fans aren’t Happy with Hollins:

“This year Ryan Hollins has snagged a mind-blowing 206 rebounds in 1,221 minutes played. He also has 199 personal fouls over those same amount of minutes. If you didn’t know, he’s also 7 feet tall. What I just told you must set some sort of record. Ryan Hollins couldn’t grab 8 boards in a lumberyard. I mean, seriously. He is 7 feet tall and he’s averaging 1 rebound per every 6 minutes played. And on top of that, this season he almost has MORE FOULS THAN REBOUNDS!”

“hollins probably has the biggest gap between physical gifts and actual basketball IQ i have ever seen. Hollins sucks and i hope he isnt on my wolves next year”

Suns to Acquire Hedo Turkoglu, Josh Childress

-The Phoenix Suns didn’t want their summer to be defined by losing Amar’e Stoudemire to the New York Knicks, and they made sure of it Sunday night with two major deals, acquiring veteran forward Hedo Turkoglu from the Toronto Raptors for guard Leandro Barbosa and agreeing to a trade with the Atlanta Hawks that will bring restricted free agent Josh Childress, whose rights the Hawks still hold, to Phoenix in exchange for a second-round pick. Childress will receive a five-year, $34 million deal from Phoenix.

Turkoglu and Childress were both coveted by the Suns’ former general manager, Steve Kerr, and even after his departure the club went ahead and got both players, who will bring much-needed depth to one of the league’s older teams and provide help in several ways for Steve Nash and Grant Hill next season. The Arizona Republic first reported the Turkoglu acquisition and Yahoo! Sports first reported the Childress trade.

Because Phoenix received an eight-figure trade exception for agreeing to give Stoudemire an extra year on his $100 million contract, the Suns could bring in Turkoglu’s $9.8 million salary for next season while only giving away Barbosa’s $7.1 million contract, the final year of his deal.

A source said that Suns coach Alvin Gentry had also been “a big Childress guy” for many years and wanted to have more depth and flexibility on the roster next season. Phoenix played most of the postseason with just a 10-man rotation and felt it needed to get younger and deeper with the 36-year-old Nash and the 37-year-old Hill both expected to log big minutes again next year, and with starting two-guard Jason Richardson entering the last year of his contract. The 31-year-old Turkoglu and the 27-year-old Childress, who has played the last two seasons for Olympiacos in Greece, fit the bill, and also provide more pieces in case the Suns try to make another major acquisition down the road.

Phoenix had already signed free agent forward Hakim Warrick to a four-year, $18 million contract this summer, but ”we didn’t want to fall off the earth with Amar’e leaving,” a Suns source said.

Turkoglu will likely start at Stoudemire’s power forward position next season and that will give the Suns a very different look at that spot and also give them more options. The 6-8 Turkoglu excelled as a playmaker for the Magic in the playoffs in 2009, running the pick-and-roll with All-Pro center Dwight Howard relentlessly in Orlando’s Eastern Conference finals win over the Cavs. In Phoenix, he could have a similar role that would allow Nash to play more off the ball and not have as much pressure game in and out as the team’s chief ballhandler.

Turkoglu signed a five-year, $53-million deal with the Raptors last summer, a seeming perfect match for the Turkish star, whose wife loved the cosmopolitan nature of Toronto. In doing so Turkoglu abruptly left the Portland Trail Blazers at the aisle, after the Blazers thought they had reached agreement on a free agent deal with him.

But Toronto turned out to be a nightmare for Turkoglu, who never meshed with Chris Bosh and who was caught in an incident where he had said he was too ill to play a game, but was seen later that evening at a local nightclub. Turkoglu initially said he wanted to be traded from the Raptors, then recanted and the team had indicated as recently as Saturday that it planned to bring Turkoglu back into the fold next season.

But the Suns’ interest in him made a deal happen very quickly.

Childress had an NBA out in his contract with Olympiacos, but had to exercise it by Thursday or return to Olympiacos for a third and final season. He signed a three-year, $20 million deal with the Greek team in 2008.

Once the Hawks committed to re-signing Joe Johnson for a max-level, $124 million deal, Atlanta had no chance to re-sign Childress. Several teams inquired about Childress but were hoping to sign him for the $5.8 mid-level exception and thought he would likely command more money with so many teams having cleared significant salary cap room this summer.

Barbosa, 27, acquired in a Draft day deal from the Spurs in 2003, had moments of brilliance with the Suns, most notably in the 2005 playoffs, when he helped bring Phoenix back from a 3-1 deficit in the first round against the Lakers to win in seven games. His speed with the ball made him one of the league’s most dangerous players in the open court. But injuries had slowed his effectiveness in recent seasons, and the emergence of Goran Dragic down the stretch and in the playoffs last year took away a lot of Barbosa’s minutes

I don’t understand this obsession with Howard…

Lebron-Wade-Bosh will get him in foul trouble within 5 minutes of play. Either that or he will have to step back and loosen up his D.

And on offense he is limited and can be put out the game with good non colapsing D and without leaving the outside shooters free.

I foresee a 60 win Miami from day 1. If that will translate into playoff success, that might be a slightly different story.

Shaq can’t run….he can’t defend…..he’s injury prone….his attitude sucks….and “y’all” can’t wait to have him here……..Please think before you write. He should retire and apologize.

Here’s a stat I never saw before Childress was sent to Phoenix….He hit more than 50% of his shots……How many Hawks hit 50% of their shots? Yes, he is a loss…….don’t kid yourselves.

This “analysis” of Miami doesn’t take into account a few things….one is D. Wade’s incredible ego, L. James getting every imaginable call in Cleveland so he could become some sort of “king,” and Pat Riley’s unquenchable desire to coach this team once they lose right out of the box. Lebron had some behavioral issues before……Wait until he gets into the Miami scene…

Who’s the joker comparing Woody’s ability to Drew’s? Please go back and watch the Golden State debacle…..and then the Dallas disaster…….Woody poisoned the whole franchise. Watch the tapes.

From our side we have to be creative and dynamic.

Good cohesive team D and good transition bball coped with good ball movement and a lot of offensive options is a good formula for success. The problem is finding the right personnel and get them to buy into team first ball like the celtics showed for the vast majority of this years’ playoffs.

Najeh,

The NBA eliminated the division winner gets top 3 seed rule a couple years ago. So top 3 seeds are based on record only.

I am a big fan of childress, and playing in Phoenix system alongside Nash should help him.

But I am glad his situation is resolved, and I am okay with a second round pick and a $3 mil exception IF we use the exception.

This was just a procedural move by the Hawks. They weren’t going to match the offer for Childress, and what they got was basically the best something for nothing deal available.

Now then, what we do with the trade exception is a different matter. First, will the Hawks use it? If so, how?

If you want (or think we can get) Shaq at the mid-level exception — this deal doesn’t change a thing. However, if it becomes an issue of money with Shaq (or whomever), then this deal allows us to package a deal to offer more money than the MLE.

The most likely use of the MLE created here is (as some folks have suggested) is a deal involving Bibby or Marvin. If you deal either of those players, then you can take on a player with a larger salary than what they’re currently on the books for.

Personally, I can’t see the Hawks going even further over the cap with this roster — unless there’s a way to drastically blow up the franchise in case of failure. Plus, the ASG has a bad rap (and not just with us here on the blogs) for their fiscal acumen. So while we might have created a trade exception, I have doubts that it will be put to (good) use.

Later,

Don!

@ Big Ray: “So, we traded Childress away for a little more space away from luxury tax territory and a 2nd round pick that we will either sell or stash in Europe.”

there really is no “space” being created here since Chills technically wasn’t on the books until he signed the offer. the cap hold wasn’t really an issue since the Hawks couldn’t get under the cap anyway due to J.J.’s deal.

the pick is really not the value of this deal and really is only included so the Hawks can get the trade exception. the value of unsigned picks is set at $0, so the Hawks are taking back $0 in salary while sending out Chills’ salary. that earns them a trade exception. i’m assuming the Hawks now plan to use that exception soon.

the Hawks didn’t really have much leverage in this. Phoenix could have signed Chills to that contract as an offer sheet that the Hawks wouldn’t have matched. to be sure they would get Chills, the Suns in effect sent the Hawks a trade exception.

The Hawks are an ineptly run organization, and it’s not Sund’s fault. Think about it, do you really think Sund wanted Joe at 122 mil $? It was the owners group that splintered itself over him the first time, and they aren’t about to let him get away and have Belkin say ‘I told you so’. Until this bunch of spoiled trust fund babies ( Seydel, Gearon, Jr) and egotistical maniacs (all of the rest) sell to a real owner, this team will do what it does, win 50 games, lose in the playoffs, tear down and rebuild, and start the cycle over.

I could go all negative because Sund and the ASG have done basically a terrible job with this offseason to go along with that embarrassment in Round 2. For anyone to defend them, you are truly an optimist.
There is time still to get something done:

- There sounds like a legit chance for Shaq to come here.
- There are roster spots to be decided still.
- Something should be done to the core of this team. If the management group disagrees, it sure shows so far.

You might as well get Al signed early before he has flexibility.

Anyone bet Sund is trying to get 2 guys with the MLE money? We have yet to sign a MLE player since this team was torn down and rebuilt.

Congrats on that 2012 2nd rounder. Now we can hope Phoenix gets altogether awful in 2 years and we can start scouting the 32-37th BPA.

Let’s see how the next shoe falls. I assume that the $3M can be added to the contract of an out-going player to bring back someone whose salary fits into that combined box. Or said differently, we could trade Zaza’s $4.3M contract and bring back a $7.3M player because of the $3M trade exemption. If we use the trade exemption to bring back a player that is roughly $3M more valuable than the one we’re giving up, then that is palatable. But if we essentially trade Childress for a $3M player, that just seems plain stupid.

THe Hawks are actually in a better place now than most people think. We have a really dynamic scorer in Jordan Crawford. If Teague lives up to expectations our backcourt of the future is set. But we live in the present now, and the Hawks will finalize the Shaq or Brad Miller deal by weeks end. The Marvin Williams and bibby for Tony Parker would be nice aswell and if you add shaq to that mix then Larry Drew better finish with 57+ wins.

This is a tough decision b/c Marvin Williams, Teague, CHildress, etc., all suffered under Woodson ISO offense. So we really dont know if players like Marvin can really tap into his real potential. So that is the dialogue / debate going on now. Sund hasnt really failed Hawks fans…he kept the team together at Woodson’s request and brought in Jamal Crawford. Now is the time to contend. First, we get constant complaints about Sund and the ASG not doing anything. And now that we’ve discovered they are actually doing something, we still get one complaint after another. I’m puzzled why anyone would complain about the Hawks returning the same 9 core players that won 53gms, finished 3rd in the East and made it to the 2nd rd of the playoffs.

Sund and the ASG have already made the biggest change that needed to be made when they hired new HC LDrew. We now have a HC that’s actually capable of helping both the team and all of its players development and improve. When opposing teams make adjustments, we now have the brain power and willingness to make counter adjustments, and actually make them during gms.

Anyone paying attention to interviews with Hawk players should know there’s an entirely new level of excitement and confidence among them, now that LDrew is our new HC. It’s certainly something that’s been missing the last few yrs. I’m wondering if the Hawks current moves are designed to give them the flexibility to do more than just sign Shaq.

I just don’t share this narrow obsession so many of you seem to have about us needing to sign someone like Shaq just to stop DHoward. Hell, didn’t Cleveland and Phoenix think and do the same thing, and how far did it get them? There has certainly been no shortage of teams that have had success against Orlando and DHoward without Shaq, or anyone else capable of defending him single handedly.

People, MWoodson is no longer our HC, which means we are no longer handicapped by a sutbborn single minded approach to getting things done. Therefore, we don’t have to focus on a single player that’s suppose to be capable of defending him. With new HC LDrew, we now have the luxury, and the ability, to use our superior speed, quickness, depth and athleticism, as well as STATEGY, as weapons to contain DHoward and defeat Orlando.

With the Hawks, he knows for certain he’ll be coming off the bench, and won’t get starter mins, since he’ll have to split time with Zaza. Therefore, he’s demanding more money from the Hawks for putting him in the position of having to do what he’s never had to do, and that’s be a backup.

Is it too late for Joe Johnson to give back some of his money for the good of the team and aid in bringing in a “Big” (restructure contract). So he will make $100 milliion instead of $123 million – I don’t think he’ll miss a meal, be able to buy several mansions, several cars, leave plenty to his family, etc – come on JJ – give some money back. Think of it as a furlough :-D

Why all the negativity? Doesn’t it seem premature to judge Sund’s offseason before we see how the roster shakes out first?

I agree that further changes need to happen after the playoff flameout in the Spring, but you would think we’re the Nets given the amount of vitriol that’s being thrown around. Relax folks – let’s see how the roster looks in a week or two and then we can judge.

Rick Sund, like Frank Wren, has almost been perfect since taking over the job. I’m not going to hold Seattle against Sund, it’s what he does with the Hawks that matter to me. Go Sund!

I like Josh Childress, and he is going to the perfect role in Phoenix, off the bench – 20-25 mpg. Will play great for 3 years or so, then flameout – his body is not an NBA body. If he were a starter, he might survive 2/3’s of a season playing JJ’s minutes.

Would do a Bibby, Evans, 1st pick trade for Mo Williams, but I don’t like the idea of giving up Marvin. He will be 24 this season – think, in the 2012-13 season, he will still only be 26 years old, Horford 26, Josh 27 and Teague 24. We have a solid, young nucleus – Hey, even ZaZa will only be 29 in ‘012-13. Stick with the plan – Get Mo and Shaq and we may win a title, esp. if we…

Sign Matt Barnes to the 4.3m 2 yr. deal you can give vets.

Give us Mo and Teague at Point
JJ and Jamal at SG
Marvin and Barnes at SF
and a frontcourt of Horford, Josh, Shaq, and Zaza and tell me why we can’t win a championship with that team?

Lets not fool ourselves Chillz was a good role players but he wasnt worth 6-7 mill a year IMO. Im just glad he is off our books and we can finally move on.
The summer he went to Greece-Flip/Mo more than made up for his production and the team increased its win totals I dont see the problem here. Also I believe that Sund is in the process of getting us a Big with the draft day cash and the money from this TE………

OK- I dont care what the Minnesota fans say -until they win more than 30 games nobody gives a rats azz. I saw Hollins enought to know that he is a solid big off the bench-better than Joe Smith,Collins, and Morris. The guy gives you Athleticism, length and shotblocking while ZAZA wants to Fight and Flop – Hollins looked pretty good against us last year and im sure his numbers would improve if given steady minutes . Its hard to perform stuck behind Jefferson/LOve jus say’n.

just a guess …. but we may hold on to the trade exception (TPE?) until the trade deadline for the 2010-2011 season. Players on other teams that may be a good fit for us may be too expensive now (FA frenzy, eternal optimism for all 30 teams not wanting to rid of certain playars), but by All-Star break at least a few teams will come to the realization that they will be praying over ping-pong balls come the 2011 NBA Lottery. I say hold pat, Sund.

None of us are going to be satisfied. Some of us want action NOW, but will be pissed if we are foolhardy in using it on a player that doesn’t fit or work out.

Please Ken, the team was laughed out of Boston, toyed with by Cleveland every game we played them, and totally embarassed by Orlando. For that, Joe gets the max, Marvin gets a bonus (huh?) and Bibby and Zaza still have at least 2 more years on their contracts. You don’t see anything wrong with the development of this roster?
Keeping the core 9 is not the answer…they aren’t any players fighting for minutes….. they have alreday been established. We aren’t benching Marvin, and I will wait to see if Bibby does come off the bench. I am not convinced by any of this LD coach speak.

Sacrifice the spark off the bench, for a starting line-up of

I was listening to 790thezone’s afternoon show yesterday coming back into town and the analyst stated the ASG are not spending any money on the Thrashers and trying to sell them off and want to focus on Hawks and paying J.J.’s huge contract. I would hope they would make more moves to upgrade Hawks roster and hopefully sooner rather than later. Although there are a lot of teams with tons of cap space overpaying free agents now. Coaching… Started Mike Bibby every game but one(jeff Teague 24pts 15ast)

Coaching…Thought Al Horford guarding PG was a good strategy

Coaching…Thought a “Street ball offense” could win a title

Coaching…Created division in the locker room.

Coaching…Is the reason for the lack of player development.

Coaching…Thought a “Grind it out” offense was best for the collection of athletes the Hawks have.

The New Coach…Thinks all the stuff I just outlined is BAD COACHING and promises to change all of it…I have faith that these changes will have a profound effect on our team.

Ive never heard a player on a championship team say “we never would have done it with out coach fart breath.”

The reason lebron and bosh and wade are getting together has nothing to do with whos the coach. Its about stacking all the talent on one team.

I won’t give you a percentage on what it is but I do think coaching plays a bigger role than that. A good coach doesn’t just draw up the plays, they are the leaders and the foundations of most NBA teams. A good coach can carry a team beyond its expectations, while a bad one can lead a talented team to disappointment.

Don’t bring up the Big 3 in Miami when talking about the importance of an NBA Coach! Because you know that’s different, PLUS, THEY HAVEN’T PLAYED A GAME YET!!!

OBRIEN/KEVINM-it’s called CAUSE AND EFFECT. If the HC refuses to develop and give consistent mins to a talented PG that plays good DEF, and that PG produces very little, the HC is the CAUSE and the lack of production is the EFFECT.

If the HC insists on starting and giving major mins to the NBA’s least productive PG, who plays absolutely no DEF, and DEF is one of the teams problems, the HC is the CAUSE and the inconsistent DEF is the EFFECT.

If the teams key players refused to listen to the HC, and insists on doing whatever they want, and the HC does absolutely to correct the problem, the HC is the CAUSE and insubordination is the EFFECT.

I can go on and on, but Woodson’s dismissal and subsequent replacement by his assistant, as well as the resigning and retention of our top 9 players, is a damned good sign that Sund and the ASG certainly felt MWoodson was either directly or indirectly responsible for what ailed the Hawks.

The moves by Sund and the ASG aren’t about changing our assets to get better production. It’s about switching to a HC that can get much better production out of those assets through the use of strategy, better OFF/DEF systems and philosophy, and much better utilization of those assets.

We finished 3rd in the East with 53 wins, and you all know there were at least 7-9 gms we definitely should have won with better overall coaching. We shouldn’t have lost the front end of the back to back with Cleveland. There’s no way we should have lost 3 or 4 to the Knicks, nor that embarrassing loss to Detroit, who was missing most of their starters. We also shouldn’t have lost the gm against New Orleans, and we definitely shouldn’t have lost that embarrassing gm against Chicago.

When Sund and the ASG looked at the regular season gms that were given away because of coaching issues, along with our 1st rd struggles and 2nd rd embarrassments the last 2yrs, they realized this team needed adjustments rather than change to get to the next level. Therefore, MWoodson had to go.

If your back is hurting(EFFECT), and the doctor finds out it’s the result of one leg being shorter than the other(CAUSE), WOULD YOU SUGGEST TRYING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BY OPERATING ON THE BACK, OR THE LEG? Sund and the ASG decided to address the leg(CAUSE-getting a new HC), while most of you are still focused on the back(EFFECT-getting new players).

All the “CP3 to the Hawks” bashers out there… You do have to admit though, that it’s fun to think about what he could do for Horford and especially Josh Smith. He would really step up their games (i.e. Tyson Chandler). Seriously though, how many alley-oops a night would there be in the highlight factory with the tag team of Josh Smith and Chris Paul. And with Larry Drew in a PG-led scheme and no more ISO-Joe (JJ playing his actual game)… That would be a really fun team to watch!

Guys: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ARTCLE ABOUT?!?

Oh yea, that’s right… The Chilldress deal… What did we get for him? A 2nd round pick a TRADE EXCEPTION!!!

This trade exception is money that the Hawks get to apply to their cap space in order to add more expensive talent. In this particular case, the Hawks would get about half of Childress’ first year salary with the Suns. He’s going to earn about 6-7m this year, which means the Hawks get around 3 million dollars!!!

Rick Sund obviously looked at the market for J Chill and didn’t like what he was offered, so he took this TRADE EXCEPTION so that he could go get a player that he liked and be able to have a little more wiggle room as far as the salary cap goes!

So, they have this $3 million plus an extra 2nd round pick and they still have their mid-level exemption on top of the money we got for J Chill.

This is a good thing guys. As far as the “trade machine,” that trade did fail yes! BUT, my point was that it WOULD HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL with the TRADE EXCEPTION gained in this particular deal!

With a TPE of about $3M (from the Chills ‘deal’), could Brown perhaps be a target of the ASG? Would this require a sign & trade with Detroit? If so, what’s in it for the Pistons? Plus he sucked in Greece against sub-par comp 8.8 ppg- 4.6 apg- 1.1 spg- 1.1 apg. When he first signed everybody around league thought that was the new trend. Other than a couple of young guys fresh out of high school he has pretty much blown any chance with his performance for players here to go overseas to cash in on free agency . I think he learned he’s not as good as he thought. He is gonna have to fight for minutes with Hill or Richardson. Nash also is not getting any younger & Turkoglu who they also pick up, is a system player. He did nothing to help Bosh in Toronto. Looks like we finally did something right by not bringing in a scrub who would have been like cancer, for a team looking to grow together. Maybe with the exception we could make a decent move right before the trade deadline & playoffs to help us in needed areas after wev’e seen them play a little in a new system.

i wish they had some rapport, he could teach him a few things.. some of their highlight footage are identical..

Granger over Horford?

I’m sorry, but that’s ludicrous.

Danny Granger is a *good* player, not great. Just think about it, people around here say JJ isn’t in a class with D-Wade and Kobe. Is Granger?

Granger isn’t even in a class with JJ. JJ’s more of a 2nd-tier type talent. Similar to Brandon Roy in Portland.

Granger’s in the class below that.

Granger is a 2nd or even a 3rd option on a good team, not the first. Al Horford’s working himself into being the premier low-post prescence in this offense.

I’m still trying to figure the hawks out. First you spend 123 million dollars on a loser for a player, but you spend peanuts on a coach that could help you, but you lie to the media and fans about wanting to sign Shaq when you know in your heart you don’t have the guts to pull the trigger. Joe Johnson has never embraced this city not one day he has been here now fans in Atlanta you must see the hawks for what they really are a bunch on naturally born losers, I hope I can get a deal like Lebron James because as of today I’m the newest Miami Heat Fan!!!!!

SoulStar,

“What Horford does offensively and defensively could be more easily replaced than what Granger does. ”

Really? Give me a CENTER that does the job offensively and defensively as Horford doea at center. Don’t bother, I’ll do it. Howard surpasses him and Horford is better than most of the other 30 starting centers and would be pretty dominant as a a PF. But again,we are speaking of positional importance. Now to Granger (and let me say I really like his game) but Gerald Wallace, Rudy Gay, Paul Pierce (now), Turkoglu, Deng, and Igoudala are his equals.

Hell, Marvin, year before last, with the proper coaching and twice the shots (which Granger takes) can give you 75% the production of Granger…Today. (I’ll take Granger all day) but the point is Al Horford is VERY UNDERRATED!!! As this debate proves.

Bad pick originally, and did the best of what we could with a bad Chill situation.

Good players will sign for less to play in Miami. Still, I like Orlando and Boston.

Before last season, everyone was pointing to the improving East and predicting the Hawks would struggle for the 8-seed. This team will still win most of their games. Marvin would be a star in Cleveland, and my hope is that Drew lets him and Teague grow.

No, this isn’t a championship team. There can only be one of those each year, and maybe 4 viable candidates. For everyone wishing we’d blow it up again and build for the title, I say “I’d rather win on 60% of the nights with a team that probably can’t win the title, than win 40% on the low-probability that we luck into the next MJ or Kobe or Shaq”

That said, I’d love Lou Williams or Thad Young or Al Thornton

The Hawks are a 50+ win as it sits right now!! J Smooth AND Horford are a year older and wiser and WILL be Better. Jamal C. will be better with a year under his belt.

Bottom line…If Joe Johnson is not a true 2nd tier (After LeBron, Wade, Carmelo, CP3, D. Howard, D. Williams) player and Josh Smith and Al Horford are not going to improve their games to Top 25 caliber players….WE HAVE A LOT MORE TO WORRY ABOUT than who the Hell we’re spending the MLE and Trade Exception on! I believe everyone steps it up a notch and Jamal Crawford and the trade exception will net us that “Get-Over-The-Hump-Piece!!” Now or Later……doesn’t matter as long as we get it right.

See, this really isn’t about basketball at all. We just miss football. Now it appears as if what we have here is a classic case of “Ain’t a dang thang on tv”.

It gets really bad this time of year. Symptoms include an increase in the purchase of gym memberships, new hobbies being pursued (reading, gardening, fishing, or fantasy football). At times, there can be an increase in the number of hours spent each day playing video games. (There are confounding variables wth this one.)

And, of course, my all-time favorite, the outcry for public beheadings onblogs and message boards. This phenomenon is more pronounced in the South Eastern United States, where the management of college and professional athletic programs is more scrutinized than childrearing.

Fellas, we have about 6 more weeks to go. I know we can make it. It’s simple. Before saying anything outrageous, or ill conceived, just think it through.

Before you know it, the Dawgs will be kickin’ the SEC in the teeth and we can all be happy.

“Can a team S&T a player and send another player with
him in an expanded deal, say a two for two, with one

I’m not 100% sure, but after reading the salary cap FAQ page, I don’t see anything that specifically says you can’t. The problem is, sign-and-traded players are BYC if they receive a raise over 20%, which makes it that much harder to package them with other players in a trade even if it is legal.

On the “One and Done” rule:

That unknown factor is one reason (besides the obvious financial/marketing benefit) the League enacted its 19-year-old age limit in the first place five years ago. Too many teams had gambled on raw high school talent and lost, and the skill level in the NBA was seen as going downhill with more and more athletic but not well-schooled ballplayers entering the League.
In the meantime, the age limit has created the rise of the “one-and-done” era. Players who likely would have gone pro right out of high school — and those who maybe would have stayed more than one year originally — are going pro after their freshman seasons at a higher rate than ever before. One reason: Players have realized that the younger you are when your rookie contract runs out and it’s time to get that second contract, the better it is for you financially.

From Dime magazine,
just happy to actually hear someone acknowledge that the skill level in the NBA
is diminishing as a result of this. (Not meant as a shot @ Smoove or Marv)

Since people are so readily making predictions about next season, I’ll share some of my thoughts on the matter. Realistically, there’s only 1 team in the East that is proven to be better than the Hawks at the moment, and that is the Orlando Magic. The Celtics are probably still a top 4 team in the East, but with their core getting older and older, and with Perkins missing, I’d expect them to struggle a bit next season in terms of acquiring homecourt advantage in the playoffs. Also, their bench is pretty much a mystery right now, the only guy will most likely be there from last season is Glen Davis, so until their final roster is set, no one really knows how effect that team will be.

Also, I’m seeing a lot of people mentioning Chicago as a top 4 team. This seems to be kind of a stretch. Their only major acquision has been Carlos Boozer. He’s a tremendous player in terms of his low post scoring and rebounding, and he gives that team a legitimate threat on the box, however, they have significantly weakened their backcourt by throwing away Kirk Hinrich. The team has a lack of true shooters, and aside from boozer, they have no true interior presence. I expect them to possibly be a 5 or 6 seed, but I definitely wouldn’t put them in the Top 4 in the East next season.

Now, onto the “SuperFriends” trio. A lot of people seem to think that just because three of the top players in the league are joining forces, they are immediately, magically going to be the top team in the league and a surefire contender for the Championship. People really need to come to grips with reality. Each of these players is going to have to make legitimate sacrifices and adjust rapidly to a new system that none of them are familiar with. Less usage and diminished roles could create some chemistry problems, and I expect the Wade, Lebron, Bosh trio to take significant time to adjust. With that being said, I think the Heat will eventually make it into the top 4 spots in the East next season, but much of how far they get depends on what they’ll be able to put together as far as an actual TEAM. They don’t have much money to spend at this point, and surrounding your stars with league minimum vets is not necessarily going to get the job done.

Outside of the Magic, Hawks, Celtics, Heat, Bulls, and Milwaukee, I don’t expect the other teams to make much more noise than they did last year. The pacers are still relatively trapped in the same position, Washington will improve, but it will take time and I don’t even expect them to make the playoffs this year. The Knicks, barring any amazing post-season moves, will still be the Knicks, just with a new face (Amare). Also, the sixers will still be the sixers. Unless they are planning on making a legitimate push to acquire a replacement big men, I think they are going to have some trouble playing Brand at the 5, and I don’t think coach Collins was the best fit for them either.

Hmm, who are we still missing? Ah, the Nets. I expect them to improve on their record from last year (obviously), but I doubt they will do anything spectacular. A playoff appearance is not terribly unlikely considering the dramatic drop-off after the top teams in the East.

Based upon that, here’s my bold prediction of the East standings based on the current rosters (which are obviously subject to some dramatic revisions in the future).

1. Orlando
2. Miami
3. Atlanta
4. Boston
5. Chicago
6. Milwaukee
7. Charlotte
8. New Jersey (with a sub-.500 record)

NORTHCYDE-You seem to be the one having Woodson issues. Please go back and read GRANDAD’S 4:04pm post, so that you can get an exact understanding of what I was doing. Why, because it certainly appears as though you saw me mention Woodson’s name and immediately decided to off on a tangent.

I didn’t know his name was all of a sudden off limits to me. I was only answering questions concerning Woodson that were posed to me by KEVINM & OBRIEN. WHY DIDN’T YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THEM?

We have people still making an issue of us drafting MWilliams instead of CP3 or DWilliams, WHICH WAS OVER SIX(6)YRS AGO, and yet you chose to make an issue of me using Woodson’s name to demonstrate the advantages of having LDrew as our HC.

WHERE’S THE DAMED LOGIC?

I just want our fans to understand we now have the benefit of having a HC that brings the much needed intangibles that have been missing from the bench, as well as an actual OFF/DEF system and philosophy that the players seem to have embraced. With LD as our HC, Sund and LD might not feel it’s necessary to sign Shaq, or any other center, just for the single minded purpose of trying to stop DHoward.

We might decide to use multiple centers, team DEF, and strategy to get the job done. That’s what HC LBrown and the Bobcats did, although they still got swept. But it wasn’t because they were dominated by DHoward, unlike us.

TRENTON-excellent analysis. Cleveland dominated the East with 66 and 61 wins respectively. I certainly don’t expect Miami to even approach those totals. With Teague as our PG, which definitely means an improved DEF, another serviceable center or 2, and hopefully a backup PG, we should finish no worse than 2nd in the East. Atlanta, Orlando, Charlotte and Boston are the only Eastern teams that can and/or will play any serious DEF. Charlotte has trouble scoring, Boston is old and a poor match up with us, and Orlando is a one trick pony that can’t hold their heads above water without DHoward.

Atlanta and Boston are the only top Eastern teams that have shown the ability to successfully play thorough injuries.

I’d hate to think of the odds any of you negative minded individuals would have trying to deal with what I’m dealing with, because a positive attitude and confidence in yourself are two very powerful weapons.

Why get upset over who we trade, or what we trade for? Why would anyone become upset over how much the ASG decided to pay a player, WITH THEIR OWN MONEY? We have a very good nucleus, and that nucleus overcame some odds to have a very good season, unless you want to focus exclusively on playoff results.

The Celtics proved this past season that where you finish during the regular season, and how you might struggle against a certain team, means nothing when the playoffs start. Our projected starting team will now be able to compete with anyone, including Orlando. We just need to add more size to our bench, along with another PG, and we’ll be loaded for bear.

How many slaves ever got their “owner” to spend $20 million for one year just to increase that particular “slave’s” chance at a ring?

Gilbert was an ass, but the whole “runaway slave” thing is just as much over the top as Gilbert’s letter was. Much ado about TRULY nothing.

Magic just got Q Richardson, and Barnes thinks that means he’s not coming back to Orlando. He is a lockdown defender and can be had cheap. I might even start him over Marvin, or at least off the bench to guard Lebron or Pierce.

Add Marvin’s 7.5mil with the 3mil TE from Chills deal, and do a S&T with Spurs for Richard Jefferson. Then sign Shaq to the MLE for 2 years. Fill the last spot w/vet PG or wing defensive specialist, and I think our job will be done this summer.

has the Spirit and Sund gone on vacation or something? The FA’s are being grabbed up and it has been very silent. Chills going to Phoenix is not news to the Hawks fans. Chills never really belonged to us anyways and we have not seen him in action in over 2 years. We Hawks fans want to know what the heck the ownership and Sund are doing. I am tired of hearing of other teams plans on ESPN and on websites and not hearing a dang thing was is going on. You gotta get something for us Hawks fans. Something good.

Mr. Strickland . . it’s no harm or malice on my part. Just an observation.

LOL . . I’m just saying though. This is a point that you’ve stated over and over and over again. It’s like an old Ms. Pac Man game pattern.

- praise Teague

- elplain how Drew’s OFF/DEF systems will work, even though we’ve never seen it

- insert the random “name call of former head coach”

- followed by the “Bibby diss”.

I actually think it’s funny more than anything. Just picking at you man.

Spurs officially signed Tiago Splitter on NBA.com. Shaq must look elsewhere.
Richard Jefferson opted out in SA, he is a free agent and can be signed outright. Spurs didn’t want him back for the money, lack of defense, and jump shot was bad this season. I keep Marvin.
Many free agents are lining up to play in Miami with big three for league or vet minimum re: Jerry Stackhouse on NBATV stated he is waiting for a call to play with Miami. Why? Stackhouse said for a chance to win a ring. He didn’t mention Atlanta by the way.

This is why many wanted Hawks to take a big like Whiteside in the draft. If you don’t want to spend money on a big, get one cheap in the draft and develop him. Hawks do neither. Still waiting for a big trade for bench help.

The Master Plan of Rick Sund:

2011 – Summer – Jamal and Mo Evans walk – we use Jamal’s 10.5m per yr.for Horford – 5yrs. 83m if Arn Tellum takes it for the RFA. If not, bidding war (after probable NBA lockout).

We then use Mo’s 2.5m for Gladyr, Sy, and JJ’s 10.5% raise.

2012 Summer – Bibby’s 6m comes off the books – we pay for Teague as a RFA and JJ’s raise with that 6m, and also another PG behind Teague. May be getting about 6m per year from Shaq retiring also.

2013 Summer – ZaZa’s 4.75m comes off the books – probably re-sign him for 2m per. We use that savings, and Shaq’s from last years to re-sign Josh Smith.

Rick Sund is a planner, I’ll tell you that…

Samuel,

I have absolutely NO issues with Lebron, personally. I’m not a Cavs fan, so I don’t really care. But what in the hell does Jesse have to do with any of this? Nothing. Gilbert said what he said, it was jacked up, and David Stern fined him for it. Lebron hasn’t lost a thing by doing what any free agent is allowed to do. He’ll make plenty of money in Miami and the city will love him.

I’m not understanding where Lebron is a victim. He’s done nothing but win in this situation, if you ask me. He gets paid well, he’ll get to play with two guys who are more talented than anybody he had in Cleveland, and the endorsements won’t stop. And he gets to hang out in South Beach full time.

Again, what does Jesse have to do with this? I get his analogy. It’s just misplaced. Only thing bad happened to Lebron is the owner of his former team said some bad stuff about him. But he can’t do anything to him and his claims that Cleveland will win a ring before the Heat do is just bogus.

I agree LeBron doesn’t owe anybody anything. And he definitely got to do what he wanted to do. What does what Gilbert had to say change about all that? Nothing.

Yeah, Jesse always has a point. And he always uses the same methods to make that point. That’s all I have an issue with. I can understand if you don’t agree with that. We’ll agree to disagree.

Gilbert is an idiot, too. And to be honest, I think Yahoosports’ Adam Wojnaroski calls him out better than anybody else.

You have picked out his best season from last year when woodson ran more plays for him. Actually Woody increase Al shots attempt about 51% how ever his completion rate was only increased .026 or something like that. My numbers represent Al’s career numbers. Your numbers represent his best year. If you want a better look. His best year at Florida was 13 pts agame. His minutes were almost identical to what he gets now. Thats about Al you going to get from Al average per season. 12-14 points.Offensively the bottom line is Al increased his shot attempt but not his percentage. Thats because Al has to be set up and is not a good ball handler, nor can he shoot over bigger guys and has small lifts for a center. Al will never be an offensive force.

Now to the reason I do have high regards for Als game. His defense. Take a look at this video of Josh playing defense and blocking shots. Notice that Al is just standing there watching, waiting for a free rebound. Which is why I say rebounds arent a defensive stat the exercise that caused the the miss shot and hence a rebound is the defense.
Northcyde reposted where 60% of the people who attempt to shoot over Al “IN THE POST” succeed .That state was amongst the highest in the NBA. Its not just about Howard. Al is not shutting down any one in the post. Period. Stop reducing Als lack of defense to Howard. HES NOT SHUTTING DOWN ANY ONE.

Now, feel free to reduce my analysis to ” you hate horford” and just ignore the facts presented.

Or as Sherlock Holmes Would say, “You assume facts not in evidence!, Watson.”

My stats were correct.

Heres the link, See if you can pick up Al when Josh is playing defense and by the way Rate that cross over move by Josh.

TRENT-where does it say a team can’t improve if it returns the same basic players? Even though Bibby and Marvin regressed badly last yr, Smoove, Horford and JaCrawford had excellent seasons. Making Teague a starter, and eliminating that switching nightmare we played the last 2yrs, will automatically improve our DEF.

Having an actual structured OFF system that involves everyone will definitely help the OFF. After all, this same returning 9 players managed to average 101.7PPG with a very limited ISO, jump shooting dependent OFF.

1-running more, which is our strength,
2-playing solid man DEF, instead of switching everything,
3-replacing Bibby as the starting PG with Teague,
4-consistently utilizing our bench depth, including rookies,
5-making adjustments, changes and using strategy, especially during gms,
6-holding all players accountable,
7-having all players start the season having no grips with the HC,
8-having a HC that’s not too stubborn to hire a DEF specialist, or take advice from his assistants,
9-having the HC dictate the OFF, as well as what and how it will be run, instead of certain disgruntled players taking over at will, and
10-taking advantage of each players strengths and getting positive production out of all players,

are all elements that will contribute to the improvement of our team, even with the same core players returning.

NORTHCYDE-I don’t have a personal problem with you or anyone else on these blogs, because I don’t know anyone personally. But I do have a problem with the extremely negative attitudes some bring to the forum. Former GM BKnight did a good job of putting together a very talented team, and current GM RSund has done a very good job of keeping it together, while supplementing it with even more talent.

I JUST DON’T SEE THE WISDOM OF BEING CRITICAL AND COMPLAINING ABOUT US BRINGING BACK THE SAME 9 PLAYERS THAT WON 53GMS FOR US LAST YR, AND MADE IT TO THE 2ND RD OF THE PLAYOFFS, AGAIN. With LDrew as our HC, we’re only a decent backup center and PG from being a top tier NBA team.

What game are you watching TS. Teague is getting guys the ball, is he supposed to make their shots too? Dude do you know anything at all about basketball or do you just like to see yourself type nonsense all day.

Exactly Big Ray. Teague, Crawford and Aminu are the only guys who look like they belong on the court for the Hawks. Its looking like last season, Teague makes a nice pass and guys just straight out missing shots.

Teague had some good passes at the beginning that turned into blown layups. Can’t blame him. And Crawford’s first shot exemplifies his game; was barely set and hoisted a contested three, yet it went in.

If we were so good and won 53 games, then why did we stumble so bad in the playoffs? You blame Sund for everything, but didn’t Sund put several pieces on the team that won 53 regular season games? Can’t have it both ways, bruh.

But yeah, I’m about tired of selling off picks and former picks (Childress) for money that we aren’t using. Having said that, the summer isn’t over yet by a long shot. But I will be right next to you screaming at Sund if we end up with scrubs for backup big men like RandMo and Collins again this year.

Observations:
(1) The movement on offense is something to look forward to,
with our top guys running the motion. [Looks alot like Princeton off]
(2) Teaguer just needs someone to make a basket. he should have
10 or 12 assts. If anybody could knock down a shot.
(3) I want to see Gladyr on the floor with Teague,
let Jeff set him up for some outside shots.
(4) Nobody on this roster [besides Teague] will help this yr.*(summer/roster)
Sy – I don’t know, Gladyr didn’t play much, Crawford = long way to go.

Teague’s gonna add another element to the Hawks offense. You don’t have to score 25 a night to have a meaningful impact on the game. Teague’s ability to blow by his defender just puts other guys out of place. Penetration creates space. Teague will do plenty of that next season.

Teague is getting in the lane just fine, but I’d like to see him finish with more consistency.

Exactly, you’d like to see him a bit more decisive. But, hopefully that’ll come with more time.

One thing I always noticed about Teague in college was that he didn’t shy away from taking center-stage in his time at WF. However, last season and even a bit here tonight, he doesn’t play with the swagger and confidence he played with at WF. He had a real pep to his step in college.

I predict Jordan Crawford to be the exact opposite. Jeff Teague’s a bit gun-shy, but I expect Crawford to be trigger-happy. The guys gonna chuck it every chance he gets, and I think people will be surprised at how well he does early in his career.

Should have had more dimes but guys were bricking left and right in the first half. Great in the open court and got to the rim at will. Ugly turnover at the end but still a good game. Aminu and Hendrix were also pretty good. I wanted to see more of Aminu. I would actually start Aminu and Hendrix together in the next game….. Sy was also nice…. Sticks to his man defensively, nice passer and ball handler. Terrible free throw shooter though..

The bad…. RandyMo. Its time to just let it go. Dude has no fire and still cant box out…. I wasn’t really impressed with anybody else.. Glider has the length but I don’t know if he can make shots consistently enough… Gladyr can shoot but he clearly needs to hit the weight room…

Teague was consistently getting wherever he wanted on the floor all game. He needs to work on finishing at the rim and setting up teammates, but his ball handling skills were very good and his man to man defense was not bad at all considering he was matched up against a 20 ppg scorer.

Jordan Crawford was the best player on the floor. His passing skills are way, way better than advertised and he is a really good scorer.

Alade Aminu was the best of the Hawks’ big men, although none of them was overly impressive. Aminu is athletic and active, which gives him a leg up on RandMo, but nobody looked all that great in the post. Hendrix was not bad I guess.

Pape Sy is athletic and versatile, and I could see him being a solid role player when he comes over here in a couple of years. He did play well at the point in this game, but I don’t think he has the handles to play that position against real NBA competition. I see him more as a 2 or a 3.

Gladyr has a really nice jumper, but if he wants to be anything more than Salim Stoudamire, he needs to hit the weight room.

I didn’t see anyone else stand out to the extent that they were worth mentioning.

Jackson can hit a 3 ball. I wasn’t impressed with his fouling defense and when he was forced to handle the ball. He wasn’t smooth with it. But then, I don’t suppose Jason Kapono or Kyle Korver is all that great in such a situation, either.

Jordan Crawford’s better, though, and he’s a rook.

I Also liked James Augstine. I’d take him over RandMo any day. Aminu needs to gain some weight but he was the best big on the court for us tonight.

“improve his court vision”

Those are the types of things that you cant teach. You either have the instinct or you dont. If you have to stop and think it messes up other areas of your game. I agree that teague can learn to be more responsible with the ball but I dont think you can make him into a court general because hes not that way by instinct and I dont think you can teach vision.

And if you could it may take many season’s to “get it”

Pape Sy was also apart of that comeback though (It was more him than Luke Jackson), before Teague subbed in for him. If we could buy him out i’d have him back up Marvin next season. He’s already proven to me that he’s better than MO EVANS smh.

Looks like my boy Al Jefferson is headed to Utah. Damn, Utah. I was hoping he could finally move to the South. He must be tired of playing in the Cold. Oh well, at least he’s with a contender and a great coach. He does kinda remind you of the mail man Karl Malone though.

Damn. If Jefferson can stay healthy he’s probably an upgrade over Boozer. Utah seems to find a way to get players who can play every year.

This is one of the many reasons I don’t buy the feeble-azz argument people make about small markets and players not wanting to play in certain cities. Especially here in ATL, which really is one of the more desirable athlete destinations. Players ain’t exactly flocking to live in Salt Lake City, and yet that team makes the playoffs EVERY SINGLE YEAR. It’s just about making smart personnel decisions and hiring good coaches.

It’s weird seeing Rick Fox in a basketball role again. Dude has turned into a pretty good actor. I can’t take him serious now after his role in “The Game”, one of my favorite shows. OK, are you serious. Luke needs to hang it up dude. It aint happening.

Yep, I was talking about James, and yep Crawford was as good as advertised…he has a great feel for the game. Didn’t force many bad shots. He can light it up!!

Pa Sy, was pretty impressive too…for someone nobodies never of heard. He has a great handle for a guy his size. I see why LD like him…he held his own…when he was own the floor…he made excellent decisions with basketball.

Teague looked good…played out of control at times, and it looked like he ran out of gas at the end of the game. That was a crucial turn over with the game on the line.

Very entertaining game…I enjoyed it. Both the Hawks and Jersey came out good on that trade.

bigdave:

Who can’t guard me? I can still shoot now! Ain’t got the legs anymore…no range.
Who were you talkin’ about, I may wanna’ take his money.

2 half observations:
(1) Hendrix (sp) [promising]
(2) Crawford still a long way to go before he can play guard [pos] with the big boys.
(3) Pops, I think they had his size wrong. 6-7, 215,
from what I’ve read & he looked much bigger than 185 thats for sure.
*Pops = defensive stopper [long] / offense, jury is still out?
(4) Quit moving on offense 2nd half. Still enough evidence to like what I saw.
(5) Marv will blossum in this offense.
(6) The time or two Memphis went into a zone;
*It was beautiful to watch us attack with such simplicity.
*put a man in the middle & attack / inside out!
(7) a. We should trade for Thabeet. b. Jeff Adrian [Mem] by way of UCONN
would make a nice 13th man for us. c. Amarre Carroll another nice Mem. player.

truth serum, great question but have already answered this, rick sund’s failure to add that needed piece to improve the team’s frontcourt.if things like i think it will, then we suffer the fate this season thanks to rick sund.we didn’t match against the big three when it cimes to the playoffs.that will be the same thing this season all sund is doing is sitting on his butt while teams in the league are getting better.if you can’t see why sund is the problem with the team as a whole, then you blind. even the bobcats are trying to better themselves, what is sund doing nothing. man wake up to main problem for the last two years have been rick sund

I will start with the bad, because I saw a lot of good. I agree with everyone on Randy. Still can’t box out and plays poor position defensive. He has very good offensive moves, but doesn’t get a chance to use them because of his lack of aggression!

Now I’m done with that!

Crawford’s game definitely translates to the NBA. He’s an aggressive offensive player with great range. He passes very well and is always looking to attack the basket. I really like the high arcing floater he put up late in the game, shows his creativity. Teague looked like he’s ready to start. He should have had about 10 assists, if it weren’t for the drops and missed open shots. I like him to start just because of his defensive and ability to drive past his man. I understand that he doesn’t get a lot of height on his jump shot, but it looks like he can get it off when he wants, so I don’t really care. Once Sy got himself together, I really like his game also. He’s aggressive and confident. I like his handle a lot, but I agree that he’s probably not a PG in the NBA, more of a point forward or SG.

I was only watching this game for 4 guys and the only other guy that made me take notice was Aminu. I don’t think he fits the current HAWKS roster, but he looks like a guy who can play in the NBA.

I really like what I saw out of Teague and Crawford. Those are the guys that can make a real impact this year for the HAWKS. With Crawford’s passing ability, it looks like we don’t need to find another insurance PG, we just draft one! And he can really shoot!

GO HAWKS!!

RandyMo should be sent back to Atlanta this morning. Dude just ain’t got it. As far as Teague’s court vision, I thought it was fine. He made some fine passes but guys were missing shots. I think he will be fine. Next game the lineup should be Teague, Crawford, Sy, Hendrix, and Aminu.

NOTHING I KNOW THEY SHOULD BE OVER THE CAP COMPARED TO THE HAWKS.SUND IS MORE INTERESTED IN JUST MAKING THE PLAYOFFS AND THINKING MORE ABOUT MONEY INSTEAD OF WINNG CHAMPOINSHIPS.THEY EVEN TRIED TO GET DEREK FISHER.WHILE WHAT IS SUND DOING? NOTHING, HE’S SITTING ON HIS BUTT WITH A CELL PHONE STUCK IN HIS EAR AND DOING NOTHING.WE NEED ANOTHER GM AND IN A BAD WAY.

cdog Sund Has a philosophy. It has never worked in his life but hed like to argue that you dont really need a center. He is not going to get us a center regardless of how clear the point is stressed. It not just about howard( he brought the exclamation point) horford aint stopping anyone in the paint. Period.

I cant say this enough. You wont get past the second rounds of the playoffs if you dont have a defensive center handling the low post and its impossible to play a real half court game with out one.

I personally dont think this organization will get any better than the last two years with Sund in charge. The sooner we get rid of him the better.

My point is:
He’s our player as oppose to a bunch of guys who arn’t.
If he has a weakness shouldn’t this be a time to work on it?
I would think our concentration would be on our assets.

I do agree with your observation.
Although, it still seems fruitless to me to give luke J. min.
that could be training min. for Gladyr.
Sorry, I overstated my case.

Not talkin’ about Teague or JC2.
or
Memphis rotation guys.

But as I mentioned above *Adrian & *Carroll look like keepers.
*[may not make their roster] Adrian for sure.

4 turnovers is acutally kind of low for starting PG in summer league. John Wall has had back to back 8 turnover games. Eric Bledsoe had 10 turnovers tonight.

Other than the last turnover at the end, I thought Teague played very well from what I saw out of him tonight. This is what I wanted to see out of him during summer league. Just show that he has the ability to run the show, while doing what he does best. Still needs to work on the shot, but the ankle breaker then the pull up 3 was nice. LOL . . ill-advised like hell, but nice nonetheless.

Meanwhile, Larry Drew may want to re-think what he said about JC2, because the kid can obviously ball. He has Salim-like confidence with his shot, but with much better handles, passing, and defensive abilities. The last thing we may want to do, is try to tame him. I know coach was worried about his shot selection, but it may be in our best interest to just let that dude do what he do.

As for Randolph Morris . . . smh. He was just a waste of space out there. Omar Samhan, the guy we had for a minute, then let go to the Mavericks, is a MUCH better center than Randolph. Hopefully Randolph can redeem himself in these next few games.

Anyone watch the Phoenix vs d league game? Lawal was pretty promising as well as Scottie Reynolds (for drafted), we should def look into him if Phoenix doesn’t nab him first. Still kinda wished we got Lawal instead of that 2nd round pick for Childress, just to have some hometown blood in here.

Another great deal goes down in the Atl. Saw this week where the steller trade that brought Texeria to the Atl. gave Texas an All-star closer that throws 100mph and an All-star shortstop. I’m sick and tired of being the Huckleberry for every other team wanting to better their club. There was a time when Atlanta would come out on top in these deals. Not now. Whoop-tee-do, an exemption & a 2nd round pick for a top of the line 6th man. What? Sund couldn’t get them to bite on the Big Mac and fries for Childress? Go figure.
