Atlanta Hawks: Childress sign-and-trade in works (UPDATE: Hawks, Suns agree to trade)

The Hawks have agreed to a sign-and-trade that would send forward Josh Childress to Phoenix for a second-round pick and a trade exception, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the deal was “on the verge” of completion. Childress would sign with Phoenix for six years and at least $30 million, according to the report.

If Childress signs a deal for those terms, Atlanta’s trade exception would be worth half the amount of his first-year salary since he would become a base-year compensation player. The exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirement.

Atlanta drafted Childress with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2004 draft. He played four seasons with the Hawks before opting to sign a free-agent contract with Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. He has until Thursday to opt out of the final season of that three-year, $20 million deal.

truth serum are you an idiot? you are telling me that it is just luck that phil jackson has won eleven championshiops possibly his 12th next year and it is because of players that by the way he helped them reach there potential, did kobe when a championship the year phil was gone no, did micheal jordan win a championship with the wizards no, did pippen with the blazers no, you see what i mean? you have to have a great coach that knows what he is doing to win a championship

Emir-I was happy for him too.You know Amare made Nash job easier too. With the offense the Knicks run Amare will still be a top scorer in the nba.If David Lee could put the numbers up like he did with the knicks just imagine what Amare could do.

Ok lets do it this way, Take all of Phils rings and subtract the ones won with kobe bryant….how many now? Now subtract the ones with out Michael Jordon….How many now?

Just give the ball to MJ or KB. and sit down.

OBRIEN/KEVINM-it’s called CAUSE AND EFFECT. If the HC refuses to develop and give consistent mins to a talented PG that plays good DEF, and that PG produces very little, the HC is the CAUSE and the lack of production is the EFFECT.

If the HC insists on starting and giving major mins to the NBA’s least productive PG, who plays absolutely no DEF, and DEF is one of the teams problems, the HC is the CAUSE and the inconsistent DEF is the EFFECT.

If the teams key players refused to listen to the HC, and insists on doing whatever they want, and the HC does absolutely to correct the problem, the HC is the CAUSE and insubordination is the EFFECT.

I can go on and on, but Woodson’s dismissal and subsequent replacement by his assistant, as well as the resigning and retention of our top 9 players, is a damned good sign that Sund and the ASG certainly felt MWoodson was either directly or indirectly responsible for what ailed the Hawks.

The moves by Sund and the ASG aren’t about changing our assets to get better production. It’s about switching to a HC that can get much better production out of those assets through the use of strategy, better OFF/DEF systems and philosophy, and much better utilization of those assets.

We finished 3rd in the East with 53 wins, and you all know there were at least 7-9 gms we definitely should have won with better overall coaching. We shouldn’t have lost the front end of the back to back with Cleveland. There’s no way we should have lost 3 or 4 to the Knicks, nor that embarrassing loss to Detroit, who was missing most of their starters. We also shouldn’t have lost the gm against New Orleans, and we definitely shouldn’t have lost that embarrassing gm against Chicago.

When Sund and the ASG looked at the regular season gms that were given away because of coaching issues, along with our 1st rd struggles and 2nd rd embarrassments the last 2yrs, they realized this team needed adjustments rather than change to get to the next level. Therefore, MWoodson had to go.

If your back is hurting(EFFECT), and the doctor finds out it’s the result of one leg being shorter than the other(CAUSE), WOULD YOU SUGGEST TRYING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BY OPERATING ON THE BACK, OR THE LEG? Sund and the ASG decided to address the leg(CAUSE-getting a new HC), while most of you are still focused on the back(EFFECT-getting new players).

All the “CP3 to the Hawks” bashers out there… You do have to admit though, that it’s fun to think about what he could do for Horford and especially Josh Smith. He would really step up their games (i.e. Tyson Chandler). Seriously though, how many alley-oops a night would there be in the highlight factory with the tag team of Josh Smith and Chris Paul. And with Larry Drew in a PG-led scheme and no more ISO-Joe (JJ playing his actual game)… That would be a really fun team to watch!

We need a point guard on this team, do not have to get shaq get a young center and need
another scorer like Danny Granger that we need . We need a point gurad for sure and I think Rick Sund iwill find a way to get this team a more contender. But this team needs to stay young do not bring Shaq missing free throws , get tried to quick, foul trouble, it did not work with the cavs, lakers, or heat with good players i known it will not work with this hawk team .We have a first year coach he do not need Shaq giving him problems or getting him fired asked Mike Brown…

We got nothing for Childress and everyone knows it….quit making up scenarios that a TPE helps this team. We don’t even sign MLE guys.
At this stage, i take any bets that the Celts finish higher than us….that puts us at best in 4th. !st round of homecourt advantage.
Easy to see Chicago and possbily Milwaukee pass us by while LD implements his ’share’ offense.

With the Joe signing, we have no room to add a player in place of Childress.
We make Jamal Crawford less valuaable IMO because everyone knows we aren’t looking to resign him at a number the ASG can’t match.

I am having trouble with all the optimism that is being presented around here.

Gee Mack,

Pacers are looking for cap relief. Jamal has an expiring contract and the Pacers have expressed interest in acquiring guards. You would have to throw a 1st round draft pick and maybe something more, but it’s really not that far fetched.

Guys: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ARTCLE ABOUT?!?

Oh yea, that’s right… The Chilldress deal… What did we get for him? A 2nd round pick a TRADE EXCEPTION!!!

This trade exception is money that the Hawks get to apply to their cap space in order to add more expensive talent. In this particular case, the Hawks would get about half of Childress’ first year salary with the Suns. He’s going to earn about 6-7m this year, which means the Hawks get around 3 million dollars!!!

Rick Sund obviously looked at the market for J Chill and didn’t like what he was offered, so he took this TRADE EXCEPTION so that he could go get a player that he liked and be able to have a little more wiggle room as far as the salary cap goes!

So, they have this $3 million plus an extra 2nd round pick and they still have their mid-level exemption on top of the money we got for J Chill.

This is a good thing guys. As far as the “trade machine,” that trade did fail yes! BUT, my point was that it WOULD HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL with the TRADE EXCEPTION gained in this particular deal!

Mike Woodson Part II ( THE SEQUEL)

July 12th, 2010
10:57 am

“Yea, this team is going down, it was a stupid coach’s change. Nobody’s going to come here and play for Woodson’s assistant. Who are you kidding? Shaq who is near retirement is only using atlanta for leverage. He, like any legitimate want to be associated with a winner. There is no way he takes a back seat behind Horford. Not only because as he retires hes still better than Horford. but his legacy would suffer if he was a back up to a power forward.”

“Bottom line? Hawks suck!”

Whine, whine, whine, whine, whine.

When will it end?

Hey T-s, Woodson is GONE.

But hey, according to you he only made a 1% difference anyway, so WHY do you whine, whine, whine, whine……..

It’s obvious you really LOVE to whine.

So I guess according to your “wisdom” we are headed down. But only by 1% since we have the same players who won 53 games a year ago.

Heh heh.
