Atlanta Hawks: Childress sign-and-trade in works (UPDATE: Hawks, Suns agree to trade)

The Hawks have agreed to a sign-and-trade that would send forward Josh Childress to Phoenix for a second-round pick and a trade exception, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the deal was “on the verge” of completion. Childress would sign with Phoenix for six years and at least $30 million, according to the report.

If Childress signs a deal for those terms, Atlanta’s trade exception would be worth half the amount of his first-year salary since he would become a base-year compensation player. The exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirement.

Atlanta drafted Childress with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2004 draft. He played four seasons with the Hawks before opting to sign a free-agent contract with Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. He has until Thursday to opt out of the final season of that three-year, $20 million deal.

As much as I hate Comcast (they are the devil), I’m glad they’re carrying ESPN 3 so I can catch the game tonight.

Why is everyone upset again? trade exception and a 2nd sounds about right to me. The guy clearly had beef with the management for not meeting his financial demands and had no plans on playing here. Lets not fool ourselves Chillz was a good role players but he wasnt worth 6-7 mill a year IMO. Im just glad he is off our books and we can finally move on.
The summer he went to Greece-Flip/Mo more than made up for his production and the team increased its win totals I dont see the problem here. Also I believe that Sund is in the process of getting us a Big with the draft day cash and the money from this TE………

OK- I dont care what the Minnesota fans say -until they win more than 30 games nobody gives a rats azz. I saw Hollins enought to know that he is a solid big off the bench-better than Joe Smith,Collins, and Morris. The guy gives you Athleticism, length and shotblocking while ZAZA wants to Fight and Flop – Hollins looked pretty good against us last year and im sure his numbers would improve if given steady minutes . Its hard to perform stuck behind Jefferson/LOve jus say’n.

If we add a solid big and a perimeter defender this is how I see the East next year

“I still find it hilarious how people think the Hawks will lose 50 – 60 games and have yet to lose a single player from a team that just won 53 games…..Atlanta fans…retarted if nothing else. lol”

KEN: With the trading of Childress and the added $2.5 million for the tax relief, what additional moves does this set up? Shaq for more the the $5.5 exception? What do you anticipate? Any other signing at the mininum like a back PG or wing player?

Any trades of vets like Mo, Bibby or Paculia?

How about Ilgauskas? Wouldn’t that be a good fit? He’s a little younger than Shaq, probably cheaper too. Big body though.

Bibby, Evans, a 1st pick next year and the trade exception to get Mo Williams. Cavs rebuilding.

Sign and trade RandMo, 2-2nd picks, Sy and Gladyr if needed to get Shaq

Sign Matt Barnes to the vet exception of 4.3m for 2 yrs.

Now you have a contender if everybody stays reasonably healthy.

just a guess …. but we may hold on to the trade exception (TPE?) until the trade deadline for the 2010-2011 season. Players on other teams that may be a good fit for us may be too expensive now (FA frenzy, eternal optimism for all 30 teams not wanting to rid of certain playars), but by All-Star break at least a few teams will come to the realization that they will be praying over ping-pong balls come the 2011 NBA Lottery. I say hold pat, Sund.

None of us are going to be satisfied. Some of us want action NOW, but will be pissed if we are foolhardy in using it on a player that doesn’t fit or work out.

I think as it stands now, the Bucks and Bulls are even are slightly better than the Hawks. Celts as well. Heat will probably be, depending on who else they sign. So Magic, Heat, Celts, Bulls and Bucks currently better than the Hawks. With the above moves, if we could pull it off, I see us at least equal to anybody in the East. And possibly a beast in the playoffs.

I don’t think we can afford a Big 4 starting center at this point. We can go with the guys we have against most teams, but for a few teams we need another big body inside. I just wish for someone a little younger. And what’s up with that guy Garrett Siler?

who cares
the hawks and basically the entire NBA is not worth watching anymore.
trade whoever you want
getting nothing for nothing seems fair
So hiring a new coach diid not impresses Childress to return to Atlanta
He must have thought the NBA was not worth playing in or playing for Atlantat was not wortth playing for
they gave him big money and he blew them off for Greece????
Let him stay in Greece

Please tell me Ken Strickland that you are happy with the roster so far retaining the top 9 from last year…please tell me that we just have to tweak to compete with Orlando.
Please Ken, the team was laughed out of Boston, toyed with by Cleveland every game we played them, and totally embarassed by Orlando. For that, Joe gets the max, Marvin gets a bonus (huh?) and Bibby and Zaza still have at least 2 more years on their contracts. You don’t see anything wrong with the development of this roster?
Keeping the core 9 is not the answer…they aren’t any players fighting for minutes….. they have alreday been established. We aren’t benching Marvin, and I will wait to see if Bibby does come off the bench. I am not convinced by any of this LD coach speak.

Swing for the fences, folks:

Horford
Crawford
Bibby
Trade exception

or

(less likely NO takes this)
Smoove
Jamal
TE or Mo

for
CP3
Okafor

still got the MLE to go after a big, bi-annual for a James Jones type shooter, and the baby backcourt provides the bench scoring

Indiana wants guards and has made Danny Granger available.

I’d trade Jamal Crawford for Danny Granger.

It works on NBA Trade machine.

Sacrifice the spark off the bench, for a starting line-up of

PG – Jeff Teague
SG – Joe Johnson
SF – Danny Granger
PF – Josh Smith
C – Al Horford

Now that would make the Hawks a true beast in the East.

I couldn’t agree more… Go get Shaq (Mid-Level Exception), then trade Marvin, Teague, and next year’s 1st rounder for CP3! Financially, this works after the Childress move! And honestly, the Hornets would make this deal right? SO GO MAKE IT HAPPEN RICK!!!

I don’t even think it is worth three million. six years at three million would be five each year right there that is worth less than three, but i am going to assume he is getting the a certain percent of raises which means his first contract isn’t even five it might be three. so 1.5 million in trade exceptions.

yeah that sucks and I am going to say practically worthless unless Sund has some evil scheme planned

JJ cost us 200 mill for 11 years.
Without JJ we would have been forced to draft a guard in 2005 (DWill or Paul)
For JJ we traded away Diaw and draft picks that became Lopez and Rondo.
For JJ we didn’t draft Roy and got stuck with Shelden and now Bibby.
Now we lost Childress for NOTHING. Yes folks – it’s actually fool’s gold.
This franchise will always be a minor league NBA team.

Josh,

A sign and trade for Shaq is more advantageous than signing him outright if we only have to give up an expendable piece. If we sign and trade, then that means we still have the MLE left to offer another quality back-up or split among two back-ups.

Ken Strickland,

Your reasoning suggests that the ONLY problem last year was Woody. Although I think he was a big part of it, he wasn’t the only problem. So I don’t want to assume that just changing coaches will fix all our issues.

So rather than staying status quo and hope changing of head coach will fix all the issues, I would like to see us improve our depth, because we were overly reliant on Jamal off the bench. And what if Josh or Al gets hurt? What if Teague struggles?

Actually, it appears that Rick Sund is doing a pretty good job, based on what he is allowed to do within the ASG’s constraints. I wish we could have pawned off Bibby or Mo Evans on Phoenix though.

I was listening to 790thezone’s afternoon show yesterday coming back into town and the analyst stated the ASG are not spending any money on the Thrashers and trying to sell them off and want to focus on Hawks and paying J.J.’s huge contract. I would hope they would make more moves to upgrade Hawks roster and hopefully sooner rather than later. Although there are a lot of teams with tons of cap space overpaying free agents now. Would love to get Luke Ridnour and a decent big man.
