The Hawks have agreed to a sign-and-trade that would send forward Josh Childress to Phoenix for a second-round pick and a trade exception, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.
Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the deal was “on the verge” of completion. Childress would sign with Phoenix for six years and at least $30 million, according to the report.
If Childress signs a deal for those terms, Atlanta’s trade exception would be worth half the amount of his first-year salary since he would become a base-year compensation player. The exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirement.
Atlanta drafted Childress with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2004 draft. He played four seasons with the Hawks before opting to sign a free-agent contract with Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. He has until Thursday to opt out of the final season of that three-year, $20 million deal.

Thank god this Marvin for Mo Williams is just a rumor made up, If we trade Marvin, that would be the worst move ever..Mo Williams has done nothing in the playoffs…Woody’s Iso Joe,Jamal offense was not very friendly to Marvin,Josh and Al,….Marvin will have a breakout season with the Hawks.. or whoever he goes to..He is free from Woody…..The Hawks are a active legit 6ft10 or taller big man(Al is 6ft 8 and is a pf) and a 1st rate wing off the bench away from going deeper…I cant believe we let Chills go….4 nothing

Another great move by Rick Sund (and whoever his cap person is). Childress had his feeling hurt because the Hawks weren’t going to pay him what he thought he was worth. We dump him, get up $5 million in trade exemption now to either spend now or when we load up mid-season without paying the luxury tax ($10 million salary potentially for half the season) and a 2nd round pick next season (to either trade or use).
For most (including these folks commenting) this looks like a nothing move but another smart move by Hawks management from my POV.

Right now the Hawks have approx. $11 million to spend without going over the luxury tax threshold with this trade. Again, great work by Sund and company. Take a look at Brad Miller and Ronnie Brewer for depth.

So, they messed up again! I would have kept Childress, gave away Mike Bibby and aquire another point guard from the market. Reason being they forgot that MIA is lurking behind them. Hawks have a team the lenghty and can switch on pick and rolls. duh!

are u kidding me about Marvin Williams whom we wasted a #2 pick on – we could have gotten Chris Paul for crying out loud!
Since 2004 Hawks only made 2 good picks in Josh Smith and Big Al Hortford…
our lineup could have been Josh Smith/CP3/Hortford/BRANDON ROY and Swift!
If i was a billionaire I would buy the Hawks for $100 million to evict the current owners and management and misery from Atlanta’s Phillips Arena!
Dont believe me – look at the picks that Hawks made since 2004… and u can tell me we should have won a championship or at least won a conference title!

Same ol’ Hawks. Too many owners trying to save money to pad their pockets. Josh Smith and Al Horford are the ones who will suffer. I hope they pull a Lebron and get out of ATL so they can expirience how a real organization is run. Since the re-signing of Joe “No Show” Johnson, I can’t imagine myself going to another Hawks games as long as he is playing.

John……cap space is not worth that much if FA’s never consider Atlanta as a good place to play and win! And I don’t consider Shaq a FA. Just another aging superstar looking to get one last paycheck. Most retired GM’s, in any sport, will say that their worst decision as a manager was to sign someone elses aging superstar. The vast majority just never work out.

Let’s see how the next shoe falls. I assume that the $3M can be added to the contract of an out-going player to bring back someone whose salary fits into that combined box. Or said differently, we could trade Zaza’s $4.3M contract and bring back a $7.3M player because of the $3M trade exemption. If we use the trade exemption to bring back a player that is roughly $3M more valuable than the one we’re giving up, then that is palatable. But if we essentially trade Childress for a $3M player, that just seems plain stupid.

THe Hawks are actually in a better place now than most people think. We have a really dynamic scorer in Jordan Crawford. If Teague lives up to expectations our backcourt of the future is set. But we live in the present now, and the Hawks will finalize the Shaq or Brad Miller deal by weeks end. The Marvin Williams and bibby for Tony Parker would be nice aswell and if you add shaq to that mix then Larry Drew better finish with 57+ wins.
This is a tough decision b/c Marvin Williams, Teague, CHildress, etc., all suffered under Woodson ISO offense. So we really dont know if players like Marvin can really tap into his real potential. So that is the dialogue / debate going on now. Sund hasnt really failed Hawks fans…he kept the team together at Woodson’s request and brought in Jamal Crawford. Now is the time to contend. We Need to get bigger, but we also need to get better/faster pg play.

Stop blogging, learn the cap, know somebody who know somebody who’s got a car!
Oh yeah, earn a law degree or finance degree, since you will be dealing primarily with agents.
One more thing, get with Ron Artest Psychiatrist, because you will be dealing with some very interesting players. That should help you become a GM.

Najeh, that’s some great stuff. I learned a lot reading your posts. Thanks.
Like Michael said, the Hawks had no leverage in this Childress deal. All the Suns had to do was sign Chills to an offer sheet that the Hawks did not want to match. So, at least the Hawks came away with something.
And, really, Childress is a good player. He’s hardly worth getting all bent-out-of-shape about, though. He’s still Josh Childress. He can go to Greece for two years, make a ton of dough, and go play for the Suns. He can do what he wants. He will still be Josh Childress.

Apparently, Hawks are interested in Udonis Haslem. He’d be a great back-up PF. If we were to somehow sign-and-trade for Shaq rather than give him the MLE, then we could offer Haslem a part of the MLE.
That’d be a very good bench.
PG- Bibby
SG- Crawford
SF- Mo Evans
PF- Haslem
C- O’Neal
Who wouldn’t want to have Haslem on their team????

First, we get constant complaints about Sund and the ASG not doing anything. And now that we’ve discovered they are actually doing something, we still get one complaint after another. I’m puzzled why anyone would complain about the Hawks returning the same 9 core players that won 53gms, finished 3rd in the East and made it to the 2nd rd of the playoffs.
Sund and the ASG have already made the biggest change that needed to be made when they hired new HC LDrew. We now have a HC that’s actually capable of helping both the team and all of its players development and improve. When opposing teams make adjustments, we now have the brain power and willingness to make counter adjustments, and actually make them during gms.
Anyone paying attention to interviews with Hawk players should know there’s an entirely new level of excitement and confidence among them, now that LDrew is our new HC. It’s certainly something that’s been missing the last few yrs. I’m wondering if the Hawks current moves are designed to give them the flexibility to do more than just sign Shaq.
I just don’t share this narrow obsession so many of you seem to have about us needing to sign someone like Shaq just to stop DHoward. Hell, didn’t Cleveland and Phoenix think and do the same thing, and how far did it get them? There has certainly been no shortage of teams that have had success against Orlando and DHoward without Shaq, or anyone else capable of defending him single handedly.
People, MWoodson is no longer our HC, which means we are no longer handicapped by a sutbborn single minded approach to getting things done. Therefore, we don’t have to focus on a single player that’s suppose to be capable of defending him. With new HC LDrew, we now have the luxury, and the ability, to use our superior speed, quickness, depth and athleticism, as well as STATEGY, as weapons to contain DHoward and defeat Orlando.
IT’S A NEW DAY HAWK FANS!!!

The trade exception will be used to get Shaq from Cleveland. There was talk of a Marvin Williams and Josh Childress for Mo Williams and Shaq trade which would be awesome. Mo Williams would make it rain for us and thats exactly what we need, a better shooting, quicker, better defending version of Mike Bibby.

I read that Shaq has a meeting with the Heat this week. Im really hoping the Hawks make some move soon because right now its looking like another summer of picking up scrubs and saying they tried to acquire so and so. I say sign Ronnie Brewer and Kwame Brown. I know Kwame sucks offensively but he can rebound and he is a good post defender. He could body up a guy like Dwight which would allow us to stay on the Magic shooters. Kwame and Ronnie and call it a day….

SOULSTAR-Shaq is willing to take less from the Spurs because they are his #1 preference, and he’s trying to make himself as appealing to them as possible. He also knows he has a very good chance of starting with them, or at least getting starter mins.
With the Hawks, he knows for certain he’ll be coming off the bench, and won’t get starter mins, since he’ll have to split time with Zaza. Therefore, he’s demanding more money from the Hawks for putting him in the position of having to do what he’s never had to do, and that’s be a backup.

I thought Childress had died or something! The Hawks did
waste a pick on that monstrosity. The best thing to happen
was him leaving. Just think how lame we would have been
while trying to start his ass, or give him minutes that went
to JCraw!
We’re won’t get full value for him.Period.
Take what we can get,the draft picks and the money.
Period.
Get Marvin Williams the hell out of town.Period.
Shaq comes to Atl as a reserve in the playoffs.Period.
Jordan Crawford will bring much needed pop off the
bench after Jamal. I’ve always liked Xavier players.
If they were in the ACC/SEC they be better known.
Lose Mo Evans, possibly ZaZa. They are both stiffs!!

Is it too late for Joe Johnson to give back some of his money for the good of the team and aid in bringing in a “Big” (restructure contract). He wouldn’t miss 3-4 million per year on a six year mega-contract and it would help the organization. He cannot spend all the money he has already earned and will earn in one lifetime. Others have done it in the past. So he will make $100 milliion instead of $123 million – I don’t think he’ll miss a meal, be able to buy several mansions, several cars, leave plenty to his family, etc – come on JJ – give some money back. Think of it as a furlough

Why all the negativity? Doesn’t it seem premature to judge Sund’s offseason before we see how the roster shakes out first?
I agree that further changes need to happen after the playoff flameout in the Spring, but you would think we’re the Nets given the amount of vitriol that’s being thrown around. Relax folks – let’s see how the roster looks in a week or two and then we can judge.

Rick Sund, like Frank Wren, has almost been perfect since taking over the job. I’m not going to hold Seattle against Sund, it’s what he does with the Hawks that matter to me. Go Sund!
I like Josh Childress, and he is going to the perfect role in Phoenix, off the bench – 20-25 mpg. Will play great for 3 years or so, then flameout – his body is not an NBA body. If he were a starter, he might survive 2/3’s of a season playing JJ’s minutes.
Would do a Bibby, Evans, 1st pick trade for Mo Williams, but I don’t like the idea of giving up Marvin. He will be 24 this season – think, in the 2012-13 season, he will still only be 26 years old, Horford 26, Josh 27 and Teague 24. We have a solid, young nucleus – Hey, even ZaZa will only be 29 in ‘012-13. Stick with the plan – Get Mo and Shaq and we may win a title, esp. if we…
Sign Matt Barnes to the 4.3m 2 yr. deal you can give vets.
Give us Mo and Teague at Point
JJ and Jamal at SG
Marvin and Barnes at SF
and a frontcourt of Horford, Josh, Shaq, and Zaza and tell me why we can’t win a championship with that team?
