The Hawks have agreed to a sign-and-trade that would send forward Josh Childress to Phoenix for a second-round pick and a trade exception, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.
Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the deal was “on the verge” of completion. Childress would sign with Phoenix for six years and at least $30 million, according to the report.
If Childress signs a deal for those terms, Atlanta’s trade exception would be worth half the amount of his first-year salary since he would become a base-year compensation player. The exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirement.
Atlanta drafted Childress with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2004 draft. He played four seasons with the Hawks before opting to sign a free-agent contract with Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. He has until Thursday to opt out of the final season of that three-year, $20 million deal.

@ALL People in Atlanta are funny, they think new players solve everything, clearly if you looked at the games or actually went to a game which i dought anybody did from reading all these negative comments, u act like the team is going to fall of a cliff and they just won 53 games this year. Second they had a good team but they had fundamental execution problems with there half court offensive sets. What they really need is a proven offensive coach (assistant at least) somebody that can help the ball move and get easy shots. And don’t forget that if they do get Shaq WHO IS GOING TO PLAY THE SMALL FORWARD JOSH SMITH!!!!!! Look hope the coaching is better and let Jeff Teagues start (he could be another Rondo) Mo Williams isn’t the answer for the Hawks. So basically you guys have no clue what you are talking about!!!!!!!!

John: “I still find it hilarious how people think the Hawks will lose 50 – 60 games and have yet to lose a single player from a team that just won 53 games…..Atlanta fans…retarted if nothing else. lol”
I doubt anyone thinks we’ll lose 50-60 games. We’ll certainly be a playoff team again next year, but what’s disappointing is that so far we are merely the exact same team as last year, which could hardly win any playoff games at all. No one is complaining about getting worse, we’re just complaining that we aren’t getting BETTER. We have to get much better if we want to contend with the teams that have drastically improved this offseason such as Miami, Chicago, and Milwaukee.

Years ago I remember seeing a cartoon of an Indian and his son leaving a movie of Cowboy and Indians. The son looks up at his Dad and asked ” Did we ever win?” I have that same feeling with the Hawks and their trades. Do we ever win as far as getting the better of the deal?

Chills was never coming back here. We get nothing if he signs a FA deal, unless we sign and trade and someone else has to want to give us something. We get room to maneuver. Let the GM maneuver. He’s working on a big….this exemption gives him room to acquire one.

Apparently, there is a plan and a philosophy. We may not need to over-react by signing Shaq if he isn’t a good fit for the team and is a Dwight-stopper ONLY. At 1st, I was down w/Shaq signing, but the more I think about it, the more it seems not to be a great fit with the foundation of players and philosophy already laid. Shaq’s presence failed to bring trophies to CLE and PHX the last 2 years, and in hindsight, probably was a poor philisophical fit for their teams (as constructed at the time). We don’t need to make the same error in judgement just based on his size, his past glory and the spectre of D. Howard dunking on us regularly.
Chills apparently doesnt want to be in ATL anymore and had NO PLANS to do so, we at least should reap some return for his rights. If he is disgruntled, no sense in forcing him to be a Hawk. That is a no-win for everybody. Michael Beasley (No. 2 pick from ‘08) got sent to MIN for beans after 2 years just to free up cap space for the SuperFriends … so if we got 4 good years out of Chills to lay the foundation of what we have now and get near-term trade relief and a future 2nd round pick, so be it.

Wolves fans aren’t Happy with Hollins:
“This year Ryan Hollins has snagged a mind-blowing 206 rebounds in 1,221 minutes played. He also has 199 personal fouls over those same amount of minutes. If you didn’t know, he’s also 7 feet tall. What I just told you must set some sort of record. Ryan Hollins couldn’t grab 8 boards in a lumberyard. I mean, seriously. He is 7 feet tall and he’s averaging 1 rebound per every 6 minutes played. And on top of that, this season he almost has MORE FOULS THAN REBOUNDS!”
“hollins probably has the biggest gap between physical gifts and actual basketball IQ i have ever seen. Hollins sucks and i hope he isnt on my wolves next year”
Ummm yeah theres more, but the overall concensus is that Hollins definetly sucks.

Suns to Acquire Hedo Turkoglu, Josh Childress
-The Phoenix Suns didn’t want their summer to be defined by losing Amar’e Stoudemire to the New York Knicks, and they made sure of it Sunday night with two major deals, acquiring veteran forward Hedo Turkoglu from the Toronto Raptors for guard Leandro Barbosa and agreeing to a trade with the Atlanta Hawks that will bring restricted free agent Josh Childress, whose rights the Hawks still hold, to Phoenix in exchange for a second-round pick. Childress will receive a five-year, $34 million deal from Phoenix.
Turkoglu and Childress were both coveted by the Suns’ former general manager, Steve Kerr, and even after his departure the club went ahead and got both players, who will bring much-needed depth to one of the league’s older teams and provide help in several ways for Steve Nash and Grant Hill next season. The Arizona Republic first reported the Turkoglu acquisition and Yahoo! Sports first reported the Childress trade.
Because Phoenix received an eight-figure trade exception for agreeing to give Stoudemire an extra year on his $100 million contract, the Suns could bring in Turkoglu’s $9.8 million salary for next season while only giving away Barbosa’s $7.1 million contract, the final year of his deal.
A source said that Suns coach Alvin Gentry had also been “a big Childress guy” for many years and wanted to have more depth and flexibility on the roster next season. Phoenix played most of the postseason with just a 10-man rotation and felt it needed to get younger and deeper with the 36-year-old Nash and the 37-year-old Hill both expected to log big minutes again next year, and with starting two-guard Jason Richardson entering the last year of his contract. The 31-year-old Turkoglu and the 27-year-old Childress, who has played the last two seasons for Olympiacos in Greece, fit the bill, and also provide more pieces in case the Suns try to make another major acquisition down the road.
Phoenix had already signed free agent forward Hakim Warrick to a four-year, $18 million contract this summer, but ”we didn’t want to fall off the earth with Amar’e leaving,” a Suns source said.
Turkoglu will likely start at Stoudemire’s power forward position next season and that will give the Suns a very different look at that spot and also give them more options. The 6-8 Turkoglu excelled as a playmaker for the Magic in the playoffs in 2009, running the pick-and-roll with All-Pro center Dwight Howard relentlessly in Orlando’s Eastern Conference finals win over the Cavs. In Phoenix, he could have a similar role that would allow Nash to play more off the ball and not have as much pressure game in and out as the team’s chief ballhandler.
Turkoglu signed a five-year, $53-million deal with the Raptors last summer, a seeming perfect match for the Turkish star, whose wife loved the cosmopolitan nature of Toronto. In doing so Turkoglu abruptly left the Portland Trail Blazers at the aisle, after the Blazers thought they had reached agreement on a free agent deal with him.
But Toronto turned out to be a nightmare for Turkoglu, who never meshed with Chris Bosh and who was caught in an incident where he had said he was too ill to play a game, but was seen later that evening at a local nightclub. Turkoglu initially said he wanted to be traded from the Raptors, then recanted and the team had indicated as recently as Saturday that it planned to bring Turkoglu back into the fold next season.
But the Suns’ interest in him made a deal happen very quickly.
Childress had an NBA out in his contract with Olympiacos, but had to exercise it by Thursday or return to Olympiacos for a third and final season. He signed a three-year, $20 million deal with the Greek team in 2008.
Once the Hawks committed to re-signing Joe Johnson for a max-level, $124 million deal, Atlanta had no chance to re-sign Childress. Several teams inquired about Childress but were hoping to sign him for the $5.8 mid-level exception and thought he would likely command more money with so many teams having cleared significant salary cap room this summer.
Barbosa, 27, acquired in a Draft day deal from the Spurs in 2003, had moments of brilliance with the Suns, most notably in the 2005 playoffs, when he helped bring Phoenix back from a 3-1 deficit in the first round against the Lakers to win in seven games. His speed with the ball made him one of the league’s most dangerous players in the open court. But injuries had slowed his effectiveness in recent seasons, and the emergence of Goran Dragic down the stretch and in the playoffs last year took away a lot of Barbosa’s minutes

I don’t understand this obsession with Howard…
Lebron-Wade-Bosh will get him in foul trouble within 5 minutes of play. Either that or he will have to step back and loosen up his D.
And on offense he is limited and can be put out the game with good non colapsing D and without leaving the outside shooters free.
I foresee a 60 win Miami from day 1. If that will translate into playoff success, that might be a slightly different story.

Shaq can’t run….he can’t defend…..he’s injury prone….his attitude sucks….and “y’all” can’t wait to have him here……..Please think before you write. He should retire and apologize.
Here’s a stat I never saw before Childress was sent to Phoenix….He hit more than 50% of his shots……How many Hawks hit 50% of their shots? Yes, he is a loss…….don’t kid yourselves.
This “analysis” of Miami doesn’t take into account a few things….one is D. Wade’s incredible ego, L. James getting every imaginable call in Cleveland so he could become some sort of “king,” and Pat Riley’s unquenchable desire to coach this team once they lose right out of the box. Lebron had some behavioral issues before……Wait until he gets into the Miami scene…
Who’s the joker comparing Woody’s ability to Drew’s? Please go back and watch the Golden State debacle…..and then the Dallas disaster…….Woody poisoned the whole franchise. Watch the tapes.

From our side we have to be creative and dynamic.
Good cohesive team D and good transition bball coped with good ball movement and a lot of offensive options is a good formula for success. The problem is finding the right personnel and get them to buy into team first ball like the celtics showed for the vast majority of this years’ playoffs.

To acquire him would really affect the other players work attitudes when Shaq can’t practice hard or play 10 minutes a game to jog slowly up and down the court. How does Marvin get a $550k bonus while Josh gets $100k? I don’t know who Marvin’s agent is, but he seems to be worth every penny.
Najeh,
The NBA eliminated the division winner gets top 3 seed rule a couple years ago. So top 3 seeds are based on record only.
I am a big fan of childress, and playing in Phoenix system alongside Nash should help him.
But I am glad his situation is resolved, and I am okay with a second round pick and a $3 mil exception IF we use the exception.

I wonder why Childress and the Hawks couldn’t agree to something? Does Childress what too much? He’s very good around the bucket and he can handle the ball. I hate to see him go…but we need some “help” down low. Preferable a shot-blocker, but no one is out there. We’ve gotta slow down Dwight and now with another “Big 3″ team in the East and in our division as well, I’m not sure what our next move is….

This was just a procedural move by the Hawks. They weren’t going to match the offer for Childress, and what they got was basically the best something for nothing deal available.
Now then, what we do with the trade exception is a different matter. First, will the Hawks use it? If so, how?
If you want (or think we can get) Shaq at the mid-level exception — this deal doesn’t change a thing. However, if it becomes an issue of money with Shaq (or whomever), then this deal allows us to package a deal to offer more money than the MLE.
The most likely use of the MLE created here is (as some folks have suggested) is a deal involving Bibby or Marvin. If you deal either of those players, then you can take on a player with a larger salary than what they’re currently on the books for.
Personally, I can’t see the Hawks going even further over the cap with this roster — unless there’s a way to drastically blow up the franchise in case of failure. Plus, the ASG has a bad rap (and not just with us here on the blogs) for their fiscal acumen. So while we might have created a trade exception, I have doubts that it will be put to (good) use.
Later,
Don!

@ Big Ray: “So, we traded Childress away for a little more space away from luxury tax territory and a 2nd round pick that we will either sell or stash in Europe.”
there really is no “space” being created here since Chills technically wasn’t on the books until he signed the offer. the cap hold wasn’t really an issue since the Hawks couldn’t get under the cap anyway due to J.J.’s deal.
the pick is really not the value of this deal and really is only included so the Hawks can get the trade exception. the value of unsigned picks is set at $0, so the Hawks are taking back $0 in salary while sending out Chills’ salary. that earns them a trade exception. i’m assuming the Hawks now plan to use that exception soon.
the Hawks didn’t really have much leverage in this. Phoenix could have signed Chills to that contract as an offer sheet that the Hawks wouldn’t have matched. to be sure they would get Chills, the Suns in effect sent the Hawks a trade exception.

The Hawks are an ineptly run organization, and it’s not Sund’s fault. Think about it, do you really think Sund wanted Joe at 122 mil $? It was the owners group that splintered itself over him the first time, and they aren’t about to let him get away and have Belkin say ‘I told you so’. Until this bunch of spoiled trust fund babies ( Seydel, Gearon, Jr) and egotistical maniacs (all of the rest) sell to a real owner, this team will do what it does, win 50 games, lose in the playoffs, tear down and rebuild, and start the cycle over.

I could go all negative because Sund and the ASG have done basically a terrible job with this offseason to go along with that embarrassment in Round 2. For anyone to defend them, you are truly an optimist.
There is time still to get something done:
- There sounds like a legit chance for Shaq to come here.
- There are roster spots to be decided still.
- Something should be done to the core of this team. If the management group disagrees, it sure shows so far.
You might as well get Al signed early before he has flexibility.
Anyone bet Sund is trying to get 2 guys with the MLE money? We have yet to sign a MLE player since this team was torn down and rebuilt.
Congrats on that 2012 2nd rounder. Now we can hope Phoenix gets altogether awful in 2 years and we can start scouting the 32-37th BPA.
