The Hawks have agreed to a sign-and-trade that would send forward Josh Childress to Phoenix for a second-round pick and a trade exception, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.
Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the deal was “on the verge” of completion. Childress would sign with Phoenix for six years and at least $30 million, according to the report.
If Childress signs a deal for those terms, Atlanta’s trade exception would be worth half the amount of his first-year salary since he would become a base-year compensation player. The exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirement.
Atlanta drafted Childress with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2004 draft. He played four seasons with the Hawks before opting to sign a free-agent contract with Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. He has until Thursday to opt out of the final season of that three-year, $20 million deal.

@Najeh…curious…do you think Cleveland would take on Bibby and Williams…it seems they’re interested in Marvin since they’re desperate for a SF? In your latest scenario…would they also include, for example, Mo Williams?

Although, then again, the Suns traded a part of their trade exception acquired from the Knicks to the Hawks. So I really don’t know which to believe. Based on that, the salary cap FAQ appears to be mistaken.
That’s about enough work for my brain for today.

John-
I agree with you that the offseason/FA just started and there is still plenty of time to improve from last years team that won 53 games… but, so far, even you would have to admit that there have been some head-scratchers so far for the Hawks this offseason… The only thing that all Hawks can agree with is, Jordan Crawford is a heckuva pickup at the end of the 1st round. That’s it.

I think any team would be crazy to take on either player, but who knows. If Travis Outlaw can get $35 million over 5 years, maybe some team will actually want Marvin.

@Najeh…Just something I saw, that’s why I asked. Then again, under that scenario, someone else would have to be added…because who would play the 3 for Atlanta? lol

For all the folks complaining about getting nothing for Chills – he’s already been gone two years; we just happened to have his NBA rights. If he wanted to be here and be that “energy guy off the bench,” as one Hawk may have called him, he would be. This is far better than losing him outright for nothing.

I still think JJ could have taken about 3 – 5 million dollars, at a minimum, less a year, to show how committed he is to winning in Atlanta and the team itself…but it’s all water under the bridge now.

JJ taking less wouldn’t have affected anything since he was already counting against our cap because we owned his rights(well not owned them, but we’d have to renunce him to clear that cap room, but if we did that we would loose his Bird rights). I’m sure if JJ truly COULD have affected our cap by taking less, if he probably would have.

Why are you people stressing and growing grey hairs about this joke of a team. They show what they thought about you when they signed the I could care less if they show up or not OVERPAID 120 million $ man back. SHAQ would be a fool in he comes here and ride the bench. What good is winning 50+ games and getting destroyed in the playoffs two years straight going seven games to a one man Miami Heat team and going seven games to an underman Bucks team and getting embarrassed in the second round sweeps. This team might have won 53 games last year in a weak eastern conference but I highly doubt they would even win 45 this upcoming year. The Eastern Conference will indeed be highly competitive this year here is my prediction.
1. Miami Heat (it doesn’t matter who play with the superpowers those 3 along will destroy the East
2. Orlando Magic ( if anybody can upset the Heat than its them)
3. Chicago Bulls ( Boozer now Kyle Kover give them a solid starting 5)
4. Boston Celtics (They will be going through the motions of the season they are built for the playoffs
5. Milwaukee Bucks ( Bogot returning will make them a solid team with a chip on their shoulder
6. Atlanta Hawks (they wouldn’t listen to Woody what make U think they would listen to LD)
7. Charlotte Bobcats ( Larry Brown guys just might up seed the Hawks)
8. Washington Wizards ( Wall, Arenas and Yi will do some damage this year)

Miami will NOT “destroy” the east…they’re not even going to make it ouf of the east. I still believe Boston and Orlando are better than Miami. You can drool over the “superpowers”—horrible analogy but I’ll run with it…they have NOONE that can bang inside and dominate the glass..NOONE.

Before you hate on me for my very non-expert predictions, a) Orlando is still a better TEAM than Miami, b) 3 of the top 4 seeds have to be division winners, and c) I think Atlanta will finish with a better record than Boston or Chicago but will get bumped down because of the division winner rule.

@ John Miami is in constructing mode right now I’m pretty sure they will have their rosters filled to before the season I would rather SHAQ go to either Boston or Miami anywhere but here because these guys with the exception of Al Horford and Jamal Crawford aren’t serious about winning. I gotta respect the superpower for willing to take pay cuts to build a winning Dynasty can’t say so much for Joe though.

John .. . what you may see . . is Lebron become a souped-up Magic Johnson. Wade will be the top scorer, Bosh will be the 20 pt guy on the frontline, but Lebron could possibly average 10+ assists a game.
I think that is Lebron’s transformation . . to become the top assist guy in the league, while still having the ability to score 20 ppg.
Wade is more of the Kobe/Jordan type closer. Bosh is the Gasol type that gives them scoring and rebounding. And whomever is the designated shooter on that team ( Mike Miller or somebody ), is going to get wide open looks when teams go into panic mode trying to slow down one of those 3 guys.
Just don’t be surprised if Lebron’s scoring average dips significantly ( 20 – 22 ppg ), but his assists increase dramatically ( 10 – 12 apg )
John

2:41 am
@north…I’d agree with that. Wade is a good closer…but he’s not on the level of Kobe and Jordan. And Bosh, who I’ve always liked since his one year at GT (still irritates me he didn’t stay longer…lol). I do think they’re going to be good this year, and even better as they go along…however, they have no match for Howard…they can’t match with Boston’s frontline…and they certainly have nowhere near a match for Gasol and Bynum in L.A. So again, another ring for Kobe.

I’m sure it’s been said by many-
The Hawks have a great team, but they need to pursue Shaq, number one, and i’m not sure on what they will have to do for that (get joe johnson to sign for less ala lebron and wade etc.), trade childress, and if we have to trade one of our guys perhaps Marvin.. but Marvin is a good player and has alot of room for improvement.
I don’t understand how dysfunctional the hawks ownership/management has been for decades, please take some lessons from mr john shuerholz and the atlanta braves.
there is no excuse to be throwing away first round draft picks.
if we make this happen, we can win championships. if not, last resort, i will agree that we could soon slip back to having losing seasons and a trainwreck roster year after year.
sign shaq, and there is no excuse because we have the roster/talent.
people are hard on the hawks, the series against the magic was an ugly way to end an otherwise GREAT year. they have made the playoff’s the past 3 years. the magic is the only team that gives them problems, and with shaq guarding vince carter and dwight howard -this is just what we need.

“ANYTHING for Childress is good…considering he is really not of much value playing in Greece for 2 years…and the cap space we save helps tremendously!!! ”
???
We are over the cap, so we don’t get any cap room.
We just stay 6M under the Tax instead of 1M, and have our MLE.
Basically it’s just our owners not wanting to spend as much as they can to improve the team.
They could have match, and use the MLE (and pay some tax), and trade him later if he’s not the best fit.

“The trade exception is extremely valuable, especially for a team over the cap. If the exception is 6 million, that means the Hawks can trade a Hawks player making 7 million and the trade exception for another player making 13 million.”
Maybe it’s already said, but you can’t do it.
the one-year traded player exception can be used only to get a player (or several players) with a salary equal or less the amount of the exception.

The Hawks should go after Brad Miller. He’s a better fit for the Hawks. Shaq is too old and you can’t play him at the end of games because of his poor free throw shooting. I’m telling all of you signing Shaq would be a big mistake, I promise you.
