Atlanta Hawks: Childress sign-and-trade in works (UPDATE: Hawks, Suns agree to trade)
The Hawks have agreed to a sign-and-trade that would send forward Josh Childress to Phoenix for a second-round pick and a trade exception, people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.
Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the deal was “on the verge” of completion. Childress would sign with Phoenix for six years and at least $30 million, according to the report.
If Childress signs a deal for those terms, Atlanta’s trade exception would be worth half the amount of his first-year salary since he would become a base-year compensation player. The exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirement.
Atlanta drafted Childress with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2004 draft. He played four seasons with the Hawks before opting to sign a free-agent contract with Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. He has until Thursday to opt out of the final season of that three-year, $20 million deal.

Pape Sy just went coast-to-coast and dished to a big man for a layup. I don’t think he has the handles to play the point in the NBA, but he’s quick, athletic, and versatile.

Gladyr has a nice shot, but he is really, REALLY skinny. He has to get stronger if he wants to get significant NBA minutes (not that he will this year anyway, but for the future when he actually comes here).

Their best post players on this squad are Alade Aminu and RandMo, and they are going up against a team with Hasheem Thabeet (who may not be a great player but he is the #2 pick from last year’s draft) so it’s not too surprising.

Sy has pretty good court vision though. He’s made some pretty good passes in this game. He may not have the handles, but it’s not hard to tell why they say he can play point in Europe. In the NBA, he’s probably more of a SG/SF.
