Former lottery pick Luke Jackson makes Atlanta's summer roster.
Finally, after much delay, the Hawks announced their summer-league roster today. The idea was to put together a strong group to benefit Teague’s development. The Hawks ended up with five guys other than Teague with NBA experience, including RandMo.
The others are Luke Jackson (No. 10 overall pick by Cleveland in 2004 draft, 73 games played); Jermareo Davidson (52 games played with stops in Charlotte and Golden State); James Augustine (27 games played with Orlando), and Trey Gilder (two games with Memphis).
Teague will be joined fellow Hawks draft picks Jordan Crawford, Pape Sy and Sergiy Gladyr. The Hawks open play in Las Vegas on Monday.

With this roster, will Pape and Jordan play the point when Teague comes out? One thing to keep in mind, summer league games are mostly for guards since they handle the ball most of the time. I wouldn’t expect much from big man play during this time.

this is a pretty good summer league roster.. and im glad it is based on the developement of jeff teague.. i jus hope they are not tryin to fill out the rest of their roster with a few of these players though.. i hope jordan crawford and jeff teague shine to a point where we know jeff can start, and we know that jordan crawford can contribute… i also will like too see what pape sye is good at.. i hope those three make the team.. so that would be 11 roster spots full.. two more would be for a pure defender and for somebody that is a true big men!!!

Hawks probably have one of the most interesting summer league teams to follow. You have Teague trying to show he can be given the keys to run the team. You get to see Crawford, the 1st round pick. You have Gladyr, who not many know about. Plus, since there are roster spots available, some of these guys have a legit shot at making the team. Luke Jackson, in particular.

Teague and Crawford (I think) are the same age. It will be interesting to see if one is noticeably more “NBA ready” than the other. Teague clearly has an advantage, having practiced against NBA players for 12 months. But I won’t be surprised if Jordan appears to be the one who “gets it” in terms of his total game.

What is it with these Hawks? They can’t even find enough centers for the summer league. Don’t we need a backup? We all know what RandMo game is all about. Can’t they find at another center to evaluate? Do they have a lovefest with forwards or something? I’m counting 7 out of the 12 players are forwards. It’s one thing to be cheap, but then to be cheap and stupid. That equals a string like the Braves had. A middlin’ team that makes the playoffs every year and then exits very quickly and quietly. Shame…

The Hawks need to turn the reigns over to Teague here the reason why. Do you guys remember what Brandon Jennings averaged over in Italy against sub-par competition 5.5 ppg- 2.2 apg- 1.6 rpg-1.5 spg. But Scott Skiles threw him to the sharks anyway, because he recognized talent. In limited action, Teague still averag 3.2 ppg- 1.7 apg- 1 rpg- .5 spg playing just 10 min a gm against real NBA players. Hawks fans keep yelling for CP3 but did you know CP3 ( who has played many a pickup game against Teague) has stated he is the be scorer he has ever went up against. Let Jeff do for us this year what Brandon did for the Bucks. Provide us with another decent scoring option. What can it hurt, other than Bibby’s ego.

Damion James is rockin’ it for the Nets. I still think that would have been a good pick, if we had kept him.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Jordan Crawford can do. Don’t be surprised if he turns out to be competition for Teague at the 1. No, he’s not a natural pg, but neither is Teague. Both could be capable of handling the job, and it seems that Crawford is the better shooter, maybe by far.
Pape Sy will be interesting, but I think he will struggle at first. Still, you never know.
I would really like to see Sergei Gladyr show he’s ready to come over. If the kid can shoot as well as they say he can, and he can get his head in the NBA style game, there’s your bench shooter right there. Everybody deserves a Rudy Fernandez type of shooter (without the whining about minutes, that is).

Ok, for all those who think the Hawks/Atlanta Spirit Group are truly dumb, I’ll wade in the minority for a moment. I actually like the Joe Johnson deal. Whoa!
Joe’s deal (while a lot of money) does several things for the Hawks:
1) Allows them to keep their core intact (10 players @ $65 million, while Miami has 4 players at nearly the same amount) for yet another year without losing anything major (let’s be honest losing Joe Smith, Randolph Morris and Mario West won’t do anything to the Win-Loss record) and adding Jordan Crawford.
2) Allows them to either trade Jamal Crawford’s expiring contract for players or picks or both at the trade deadline.
3) Gives them nearly $12 million to sign other players next offseason.
See why I wasn’t so sure the Spirit Group were dumb after all?

Go ahead and say it: we missed on him. I loved the pick when it was announced and damn near fainted when I heard we traded the pick. I was already blogging about Marvin having to watch his back (until he realized that James was out in front), when they announced the traded pick. Then, I thought we would take another SF/SG and a big guy. Wrong again, and if we don’t pick up a credible big guy through free agency or trade, all that noise that Sund talked around draft time will turn out to be BS. I damn sure hope not, but already watching James scorch the other summer leaguers is turning my stomach.

That’s true, but if you’re having to scratch and claw to stay in, that says something about you.
RandMo has to absolutely dominate in the summer league if anybody is going to take him seriously. Why? Because the summer league is full of rookies and guys scratching and clawing just to get a chance to get invited to somebody’s training camp . RandMo is what, a 4 year NBA vet? Either he dominates, and shows he is not a constant foul-out risk (which he has been in just about any game in which he was given 8 minutes or more), or he’s out of the league.
Either way, I don’t really want him back. Took the dude 2 or 3 years to realize he needed to lose a significant amount of weight. How long does it take him to work on his game?

The way to beat the Magic is to let Howard score his double/double and play defense on the 3 point shooters. It’s the same formula used by all teams that beat them. The Hwaks have not played the type of defense that will beat them.
The need for the big man presence is to not allow drives through the paint from teams with really good point guards that pass off. That kills us every year and we lose games to lesser teams. we have the better seed by winning against all teams left. Have not done that.

Ray,
Hope you’re doing well, by the way.
Anyway, I guess I read your post incorrectly somewhat. The guy isn’t a great player.. And we will always question how he’s still “in the league”. I just feel like the dude hasn’t gotten a legit shot at doing anything with the Hawks, but I also have seen an improvement in his work ethic as he’s matured and realized that you have to earn respect, playing time, and a contract.
While I’m posting, I am finishing up reading what you just wrote. Yes, like I just said above it took him a while to realize what it takes to be a professional athlete. I think he’s grown up a little.. He’s seen what it takes (from Woody, Joe, Smoove, Al). Does that mean he will make the team? Probably not. At least he’s learned some life lessons, though.
I would love to see the guy have a shot. Guess the summer league is his chance.

The Real Hawk,
Having a low assist to turnover ratio can be attributed to several factors besides not being a good pg. Playing on a team with guys who can’t/don’t finish or score well is one. Being forced to be the guy with the ball in his hands all the time is another. I’m not saying we should start or even force Crawford to be a 1. All I’m saying is don’t be surprised if he turns out to be effective at that position from time to time. Same things happened with Jamal Crawford….
BigCaliDawg ,
I can’t argue your point about bigs who play in the paint and do so effectively.
But if you watched any Hawks games last year (much less all of them), you already know you went the wrong way with the rest of your statement. Review the season Bibby and Marvin had and tell me how good you feel about them as shooters (and nevermind what they DIDN’T bring on the OTHER side of the ball). Jamal can shoot, but he’s also streaky. The “other Crawford” has yet to play a minute in the League.
Know what I’m sayin’?

Volman ,
I felt that way about RandMo as well….for a while. Now, I’m kinda impatient for results. What bugs me is how he and Jason Collins ended up being our big man depth. Collins was once a promising young big man who used to give Shaq the fits. Now he’s overweight and all but useless. RandMo has some offensive polish and can rebound, but he’s a foul machine.
I still don’t know if he got a fair shake with Woody. And he has matured some, but how much longer before it all comes together (or does it ever all come together)? Do we have time to wait for that? All the same, I do wish him well. I had some serious hopes for him when we acquired him. He disappointed.
But then, management has disappointed me as well, and so has the coaching staff. We almost never used Joe Smith last year, and I truly believe he had something left to contribute then.
And yeah, bro’. It’s great to see you back around again!

Real Hawk if the gaurds play lock-down defense the gaurds can’t break to the hoop that easily. Thats why Orlandos gaurds didn’t do squat against the C’s. Better perimeter defensive play will solve the hawks defensive woes and adding a slow big man will kill the hawks offensive flow.Find a replacement for Bibby and add a tough wing and problem solved.

Actually, Rondo has it right.
The Magic beat us up because we never stopped them from doing what they wanted from the perimeter, or through penetration.
The Celtics kept that from happening and isolated Dwight on the block, forcing him to be the star and main scorer. He failed, because he’s not that guy.
Dwight shot over 80% on us. Why? Because Orlando’s guards consistently broke through our nearly non-existent perimeter offense and dumped it off to him for one dunk after another. Then when we tried doubling him, they hit their wide open shots from the perimeter.
Dwight never averages more than 20 points or so in a game. How many times do you see him score 30? That’s why the Magic have fallen prey time and again, and why they were actually WORSE without Hedo Turkoglu (because Vince is a choke artist). But they’re better than us. Because Dwight is an athletic freak who is 25 pounds heavier and 3/4 of an inch taller than Horford? Yeah, partially. But also because we let Jameer, Reddick, Barnes, and Pietrus do as they please.
Last I looked, the world’s biggest morons could see that had nothing to do with our post defense….

Jamal Crawford is not a PG. Defense is required for that position.
The numbers on the rookie don’t lie. If you are turning over the ball at the same rate as assist you are a shooter. That’s fine with me. let’s not try to put round pegs into square holes.

Rondo- The purpose of a big is to support the defense when it breaks down. The last resort. We need that and have not had it fr several years. Damion James did look good yesterday. He has a great shooting stroke. After the game, the broadcasters interviewed him for a little bit. James said that a lot of teams had him projected as a 3. But he says that Jersey thinks he’s athletic and quick enough to play the 2. He kind of reminds me of Wesley Person from back in the day.
As for the Hawks SL team, “Teague Watch” is definitely in effect. I’ll be looking at 2 things:
1) can he use his speed to create good scoring chances for himself.
2) can he slow down summer league PGs.
and honestly, I’m more concerned about #2, than I am #1.

Defense wins championships, but great defense is played as a team, not Individually. The NBA all-defensive team pgs are CP3 & Rondo. CP3 is there because of steal per game, Rondo is about the same because he can take more chances with those guys behind him. There is no such thing as a shutdown point anymore. Players like Gary Payton are long gone.

If my assumptions serve me correctly, opting to run Randolph Morris as the only center means we’re going to take a stab at recruiting a big in FA to play solid minutes rather than snag one of the undrafted. This is kind of a cracked out Summer League team….On paper it looks interesting, I’m not so certain with the lack of big man depth how likely we are to go undefeated, much less just compete on the boards. I hope Lebron signs with the Heat, so we can eliminate them and the other teams vying for him. The Heat have only 3 players under contract, and 2 of them, PG MChalmers and PF MBeasley will have to start. That leaves a bench on one(1), SG KHasbrouk, who doesn’t have a single stat for the entire yr.
Their bench will be comprised of little more than 7 warm bodies. Therefore, they’ll end up over playing their starters, much like Woodson did with our starters. Too bad for them the rules only permit one ball on the court at a time.
It looks like Orlando will be our only serious challenger in the East. And with LDrew’s motion OFF, DHoward won’t be able to roam the lane and provide a one man DEF. And he won’t have the honor of going up against our PG’s and SG’s, like he often got the chance to do in Woodson beloved switching DEF. And their PG’s and SG’s won’t have the honor of having our C’s and PF’s on the perimeter and beating them off the dribble.
We aren’t going to have a lot of chances to the top 8 in our lineup, but there will definitely be a lot of changes in the way we utilize our talent, as well as the way we play and approach the gm, both offensively and defensively.

You guys are crazy A team of Wade – Bosh – Lebron instantly wins 50 games at least . . . easily.
- You have 3 legit #1 scoring options on the team, with at least 2 of them being on the floor at all times.
- You have 2 guys in Lebron and Wade that are the premier slashers in the league, and flat out live at the FT line . . and they both pass the ball as well as anybody
- You have Bosh, who is one of the top 5 scoring big men in the league
- You have big men prospects in Dexter Pittman ( Texas ) and Jarvis Varnado ( Mississippi St ) that both bring a skill set to the table. Pittman = sheer size and decent scoring ability . . . Varnado = shot blocking and decent “on the ball” defense
- You have a PG in Chalmers, if not for anything else, is known for his good “on the ball” defense. He’s the type of defensive PG that the Hawks would LOVE to have.
- And because of all of this . . plus the allure of South Beach . . and the fact that Miami will now be on national TV at least 5 times a month . . you’ll be able to get cast-off vets to play for them. Cast-offs like a Flip Murray . . or God forbid . . an Allen Iverson . . who would go to them and play for the minimum . . just to have one last shot at a ring.
Miami will have no problem whatsoever fielding a team of the “New Big 3″ + 4 veteran players that you’ve heard of before.
Hell . . even Anthony “Dad” Johnson may show up in South Beach. And before anybody laughs at that, don’t forget what happened on Thanksgiving night. And don’t forget who dominated that 4th quarter.

Even a team like Charlotte played Orlando tougher than we did.
Why?
Not because of “lockdown” PGs like Felton and Augustin.
No . . they did it by having the bigs that could effectively challenge Dwight on both ends of the floor. Because that’s key to beating Orlando . . making Dwight work, so that he may get in foul trouble.
Charlotte’s bigs didn’t need help in trying to guard Dwight. When you can play him straight up, and keep him from just being dominant, you’ll have a chance to beat that team.

Surely you don’t expect anyone with an IQ to believe TChandler(7′1″ 235lbs), or TRatliff(6′10″ 235lbs), or NMuhommed,(6′10″ 250lbs)were the sole reason for Charlotte containing DHoward whenever they played Orlando.
In most cases, DEF schemes and overall team DEF are responsible for containing dominant centers like DHoward, not the individual efforts of any one player. Their PG’s didn’t have to play lock down DEF to be effective. All they had to do was keep the PG and ball out of the lane, effectively fight over picks, provide help DEF, and challenge the ball hard if the PG picks up his dribble.
Bibby couldn’t do any of those things, and we paid the price as a result. Woodson’s stupid behind was more concerned with doing whatever it took to protect MBibby, than doing whatever it took to protect the basket, lane or our front court. We couldn’t cover their 3pt shooters, cover for Bibby’s NO D, and provide help for Horford in the lane.

Le Boo Boo big mistake son big mistake. No garuntees son because you still can’t match-up against the show-time Lakers. The Lakers still have the better closer, point gaurd, big-men,bench,coach,and championship experience. I feel this move will be the biggest disapointment in NBA history.Artest slows down Lebron, Kobe locks down Wade, and Bynum and Gasol shuts down Bosh or anyother big man you bring in.It will take probably 3 to 4 years before you guys can get a title. And remember injuries do happen and Bosh and Wade are injury prone.

Why would the Knicks take Randolph, Turiaf, and Azubuike for David Lee? Do they really think they will get Tony Parker or Carmelo next year?
I thought they would have asked for Ellis. That would have generated some excitement (him and Amare in D’Antoni’s system), and he would cost 4 years, $44 mil.

Will LBJ cut into D.Wade’s allotment of “Free”-throws,
-OR-
will they carry over LeBronacle’s allotment,
-Giving-
Miami an extra 20+ per. [not including Bosh's]
Miami games may take an Xtra 45 min+ to play this yr.
Seeing as how all their games will be on espn, that means even
more commercial time to sell.[for the 'Boys Club' of course]

Je Je-Calm Down its hawks bussiness as usual. Every summer we wait until all the respectable free agents are signed to other teams and then we sign whats left. Our FA period doesnt start until mid August unless your name is Joe johnson. I just remember the way they handled Smoove and Chillz -last minute is what im saying.
Be prepared for the likes of -Joel Anthony,Jamal Magloire or Mbenga
Lebron should have went to Chicago- Miami is in our division ,im disgusted……………………………………………….

Liberty – Justice and the Pursuit of Happy-Ness! Is very elusive – don’t forget they is a god.
A Basketball god is lurking in the wings and he will have some say here.
I was always told – IF you chase the GIRL? The GIRL will run. But, IF you chase the GOAL? The GIRL will come.
Here’s my point: you can not paint a master – piece IF you are determined to paint a master – piece. There has to be a perfect – storm to create a Tsunami. Yeah … Yeah, I am extremely philosophical, but, that is the way I am wired, but I truly believe that you have to pave the way and stay humble, when you do the hard work – the victory is more gratifying and it’s not the pinnacle but the adversity and the journey that makes winning so SWEET.
There are NO shortcuts in LIFE!
There is NO get – rich – quick schemes!
In LIFE – There are NO guarantees … Only Oppottunities!
The Cream always rises to the top!
There is no “I” in team!
We shall overcome!
Never say die!
We could do this all night … But, the other teams in the East must step up the intensity to win.
The Hawks, Magic, Boston and Chicago are the TEAMS to beat … The Heat will soon know that too!
Let’s GO … Sund …Joe … Hawks!

Dang MC, your old job just became the hottest job on the planet. Lol
The crazy thing about Lebron decision is…if you are considered the greatest basketball player on the planet…WHY DO YOU NEED TO GO TO ANOTHER TEAM…to win a ring. Maybe everyone will stop blowing sunshine up his assssssssssss now.
@Big Ray, I don’t want say too much about Crawford…until he gets a chance to play…but he got a fluidness to his game like a few of the great ones…so if he is the real deal…he should be able to light it up in summer league.
The one caveat about Damion James performance in summer league play…is its coming with very little resistant. That’s why these guys look like World Be Free in summer league, and Dion Glover during the regular season.
@Siler Supporters, you can forget about GSiler…I know I drink the Kool-Aid too. It is a niece story, but he is DLeague at best. He is playing with Favors and Damion James with Jersey …but when he is on floor…the game is too fast for him. He still got a looong ways to go…kind of like a poor mans Mario. He can go out and hustle and makes some fouls…but that’s about it. China ain’t helping him…he needs to commit to playing a couple years in the DLeague.

Alade Aminu. The one name that intrigues me beyond the usual. This is the guy we should give a legit shot. Comes from a legitimate basketball program and league. Has a lot of good basketball skills and his game may be more pro oriented than college. The Hawks are not the best at evaluating talent so we can only hope.

I never said Varnado and D. Pittman are NBA starting bigs. They have both started 3 years in the SEC and Big 12 respectively putting up good numbers with Varnado winning SEC player of the year last year. I was just making the point that they will be able to contribute with defense, rebounding and maybe some inside scoring. Playing with Wade, Lebron, and Bosh they will not be asked to do much anyway. Just like “Big Baby” in Boston his first few seasons his role was limited.
Anyway, Hawks need to make a commitment to focus on defense this season. Guys who will not play defense on the Hawks should be sat down regardless to how good they can score the basketball.

[...] Landon Milbourne is competing for the Hawks, Eric Hayes on the Wiz, and Vasquez obviously on the Griz. A bit surprised to see Hayes on a team; I think he has the biggest uphill battle for making a team. His college stats weren’t eye-popping and he’s not that athletic or a crazy defender. I’m calling Europe for him. Milbournce is undersized but plays hard – I’m trying to sell it but it’s not working…he might be D-League. Whatever, both these dudes will probably play pro ball. I expect Vasquez is the only one a roster come November. If he is relegated to the D-League, that’s a bad sign; he was a graduating senior. The things young players are supposed to learn in the D-League, he has (theoretically) already learned. [...]
