Atlanta Hawks: Vegas summer league roster set

Former lottery pick Luke Jackson makes Atlanta's summer roster.

Former lottery pick Luke Jackson makes Atlanta's summer roster.

Finally, after much delay, the Hawks announced their summer-league roster today. The idea was to put together a strong group to benefit Teague’s development. The Hawks ended up with five guys other than Teague with NBA experience, including RandMo.

The others are Luke Jackson (No. 10 overall pick by Cleveland in 2004 draft, 73 games played); Jermareo Davidson (52 games played with stops in Charlotte and Golden State); James Augustine (27 games played with Orlando), and Trey Gilder (two games with Memphis).

Teague will be joined fellow Hawks draft picks Jordan Crawford, Pape Sy and Sergiy Gladyr. The Hawks open play in Las Vegas on Monday.

I would take Matt Barnes over Outlaw. Outlaw does not stay healthy and Barnes plays better defense

Morris better be in the summer league and show his tail off and get in the big rotation for Atlanta. Woody never gave this guy real minutes I think he has skills and may be the Hawks big of the future. Out on limb for real but that’s my gut feeling about Morris I think he is good enough to play next season.

Did y’all see how much Boozer re-signed for? We got RIPPED!

We’re getting grilled by sports radio right now. It fits into that “Don’t hate the player, hate the game thing.” Don’t get mad at JJ, get mad at Sund and ASG. (JJ is still a tool, though).

It’s one thing to be cheap, but then to be cheap and stupid. That equals a string like the Braves had. A middlin’ team that makes the playoffs every year and then exits very quickly and quietly. Shame…

I’d take Boozer over JJ any day. We could even take the extra cash and sign another player.

The Hawks need to turn the reigns over to Teague here the reason why. Do you guys remember what Brandon Jennings averaged over in Italy against sub-par competition 5.5 ppg- 2.2 apg- 1.6 rpg-1.5 spg. But Scott Skiles threw him to the sharks anyway, because he recognized talent. In limited action, Teague still averag 3.2 ppg- 1.7 apg- 1 rpg- .5 spg playing just 10 min a gm against real NBA players. Hawks fans keep yelling for CP3 but did you know CP3 ( who has played many a pickup game against Teague) has stated he is the be scorer he has ever went up against. Let Jeff do for us this year what Brandon did for the Bucks. Provide us with another decent scoring option. What can it hurt, other than Bibby’s ego.

Damion James a guy that we needed to be the backup SF and eventually the starting SF, who has true SF size, the guy that we traded for a undersized SG in Jordan Crawford that will not see the floor this year is tearing up summer league so-far. Damion James averaging 20+ pts in summer league through 3 games. The Hawks blow it again I think, but will wait to see this ballhoging Crawford kid

Pros: Solid 2-Guard, 6-8, point guard handle, methodical game, 20 point scorer, good 3-point range, decent perimeter defender
Cons: Too Quiet to be a leader, too much iso, not an explosive leaper and no killer instinct

Why are some of you guys screaming for a big man. The only two teams last season that gave the hawks problems were the Cavs and Magic. They don’t have to worry about the cavs next season and with better defensive play next season they can match the Magics offensive perimeter threats. All the Hawks need is better pg play and better perimeter defense and everything else is pretty solid. Can’t wait to see the Hawks against the revamped East. Man the NBA is Fantastic. And Le Boo Boo please sign with the Knicks.

Hopefully NBA TV airs the Hawks game late night. I like Landon Milbourne. Dude is very athletic. I wouldn’t be shocked if he threw down some crazy dunks. Luke Jackson is still trying to get back in the NBA i see. He played very well the last time we had a summer league team. Was hoping to see Othello get another shot. Anxious to see Teague, Crawford, and Sy……….

We have to get rid of Mike Bibby and MO evans! We need players who don’t have too many flaws and are actually worth their $$$ Possibly trade Marvin if need be! Last season the Jazz started Rookie Wesly Matthews at SG/SF. We just have to find the right player. But the main thing is to get rid of the dead weight Bibby and Mo

Trade Mo Evans and Sign The longer/taller Pape Sy 500K to back up Marvin. Sign 6′8 Gerald Green for the Vet minimum. I would keep Childress if he would alllow it, but he can be used in a trade with Zaza for a legit Be if need be. Sign Sirgey Gladyr for 500K. Remeber, you can Pay 2nd rounders whatever you want & since they were late picks give em’ the minimum.

Damion James is rockin’ it for the Nets. I still think that would have been a good pick, if we had kept him.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Jordan Crawford can do. Don’t be surprised if he turns out to be competition for Teague at the 1. No, he’s not a natural pg, but neither is Teague. Both could be capable of handling the job, and it seems that Crawford is the better shooter, maybe by far.

Pape Sy will be interesting, but I think he will struggle at first. Still, you never know.

I would really like to see Sergei Gladyr show he’s ready to come over. If the kid can shoot as well as they say he can, and he can get his head in the NBA style game, there’s your bench shooter right there. Everybody deserves a Rudy Fernandez type of shooter (without the whining about minutes, that is).

How bad does Randolph Morris suck? This is HOW many years in the league, and this clown has to show up for summer league? Good lord…

Why isn’t Marvin on the summer league team? I bet he still wouldn’t stand out if he was.

truthspitter,

Looks like the Hawks screwed up the draft agian. Damian James looks like a NBA level small forward already, and we are paying 8 million per to a D-league level small forward who we drafted #2 in the draft. Wow. I know it’s only the summer league, but his skill level is above Marvin’s already. This might be another player that we missed on.

Real Hawk honestly i think the hawks would matchup pretty good with the 3 amigos if they come together. Le Boo Boo can’t be stopped but Wade and Bosh can be slowed down. The Hawks still will be a no. 3 seed in the East behind the Heat if they get Lebron and the Magic. The Bulls roster is better with Boozer but i still like the Hawks roster over theirs. And the C’s will be too beat-up next season to make a title run.

The Hawks want somebody out there on the summer league team that might actually do something with the ball when it’s passed to them. Putting Teague out there with Marvin would be like putting him out there with the bench scrubs. Oh wait…this is summer league…

The Real Hawk,

Actually, Crawford was forced into that role a few times. Teams were closing out on his shooting spots, forcing him to drive to the basket and give up the ball to teammates. There was an article on it on Draftexpress.com, click on his profile to see it.

Ok, for all those who think the Hawks/Atlanta Spirit Group are truly dumb, I’ll wade in the minority for a moment. I actually like the Joe Johnson deal. Whoa!

Joe’s deal (while a lot of money) does several things for the Hawks:

1) Allows them to keep their core intact (10 players @ $65 million, while Miami has 4 players at nearly the same amount) for yet another year without losing anything major (let’s be honest losing Joe Smith, Randolph Morris and Mario West won’t do anything to the Win-Loss record) and adding Jordan Crawford.

2) Allows them to either trade Jamal Crawford’s expiring contract for players or picks or both at the trade deadline.

3) Gives them nearly $12 million to sign other players next offseason.

See why I wasn’t so sure the Spirit Group were dumb after all?

Randolph is SMART for going to the summer league. Right now, I don’t think he has a contract with anybody. If he plays well, he might get invited to the Hawks camp or be picked up by another team.

Rod ,

Go ahead and say it: we missed on him. I loved the pick when it was announced and damn near fainted when I heard we traded the pick. I was already blogging about Marvin having to watch his back (until he realized that James was out in front), when they announced the traded pick. Then, I thought we would take another SF/SG and a big guy. Wrong again, and if we don’t pick up a credible big guy through free agency or trade, all that noise that Sund talked around draft time will turn out to be BS. I damn sure hope not, but already watching James scorch the other summer leaguers is turning my stomach.

Not having a big to match up with 2 other teams in the league is huge. If we hit our jumpers, we win. We’re off, we lose. Bigs can rectify that.

Volman ,

That’s true, but if you’re having to scratch and claw to stay in, that says something about you.

RandMo has to absolutely dominate in the summer league if anybody is going to take him seriously. Why? Because the summer league is full of rookies and guys scratching and clawing just to get a chance to get invited to somebody’s training camp . RandMo is what, a 4 year NBA vet? Either he dominates, and shows he is not a constant foul-out risk (which he has been in just about any game in which he was given 8 minutes or more), or he’s out of the league.

Either way, I don’t really want him back. Took the dude 2 or 3 years to realize he needed to lose a significant amount of weight. How long does it take him to work on his game?

I’m not going to put a whole lot of stock into the summerleague play. I just want to see some of the guys we drafted play. JJ didn’t even put up 20ppg in college (or 18ppg for that matter) so i’m very interested in seeing Crawford & Teague crush the competition! ^_^

The way to beat the Magic is to let Howard score his double/double and play defense on the 3 point shooters. It’s the same formula used by all teams that beat them. The Hwaks have not played the type of defense that will beat them.
The need for the big man presence is to not allow drives through the paint from teams with really good point guards that pass off. That kills us every year and we lose games to lesser teams. we have the better seed by winning against all teams left. Have not done that.

Ray,

Hope you’re doing well, by the way.

Anyway, I guess I read your post incorrectly somewhat. The guy isn’t a great player.. And we will always question how he’s still “in the league”. I just feel like the dude hasn’t gotten a legit shot at doing anything with the Hawks, but I also have seen an improvement in his work ethic as he’s matured and realized that you have to earn respect, playing time, and a contract.

While I’m posting, I am finishing up reading what you just wrote. Yes, like I just said above it took him a while to realize what it takes to be a professional athlete. I think he’s grown up a little.. He’s seen what it takes (from Woody, Joe, Smoove, Al). Does that mean he will make the team? Probably not. At least he’s learned some life lessons, though.

I would love to see the guy have a shot. Guess the summer league is his chance.

The Real Hawk,

Having a low assist to turnover ratio can be attributed to several factors besides not being a good pg. Playing on a team with guys who can’t/don’t finish or score well is one. Being forced to be the guy with the ball in his hands all the time is another. I’m not saying we should start or even force Crawford to be a 1. All I’m saying is don’t be surprised if he turns out to be effective at that position from time to time. Same things happened with Jamal Crawford….

BigCaliDawg ,

I can’t argue your point about bigs who play in the paint and do so effectively.

But if you watched any Hawks games last year (much less all of them), you already know you went the wrong way with the rest of your statement. Review the season Bibby and Marvin had and tell me how good you feel about them as shooters (and nevermind what they DIDN’T bring on the OTHER side of the ball). Jamal can shoot, but he’s also streaky. The “other Crawford” has yet to play a minute in the League.

Know what I’m sayin’?

Volman ,

I felt that way about RandMo as well….for a while. Now, I’m kinda impatient for results. What bugs me is how he and Jason Collins ended up being our big man depth. Collins was once a promising young big man who used to give Shaq the fits. Now he’s overweight and all but useless. RandMo has some offensive polish and can rebound, but he’s a foul machine.

I still don’t know if he got a fair shake with Woody. And he has matured some, but how much longer before it all comes together (or does it ever all come together)? Do we have time to wait for that? All the same, I do wish him well. I had some serious hopes for him when we acquired him. He disappointed.

But then, management has disappointed me as well, and so has the coaching staff. We almost never used Joe Smith last year, and I truly believe he had something left to contribute then.

And yeah, bro’. It’s great to see you back around again!

Real Hawk if the gaurds play lock-down defense the gaurds can’t break to the hoop that easily. Thats why Orlandos gaurds didn’t do squat against the C’s. Better perimeter defensive play will solve the hawks defensive woes and adding a slow big man will kill the hawks offensive flow.Find a replacement for Bibby and add a tough wing and problem solved.

Actually, Rondo has it right.

The Magic beat us up because we never stopped them from doing what they wanted from the perimeter, or through penetration.

The Celtics kept that from happening and isolated Dwight on the block, forcing him to be the star and main scorer. He failed, because he’s not that guy.

Dwight shot over 80% on us. Why? Because Orlando’s guards consistently broke through our nearly non-existent perimeter offense and dumped it off to him for one dunk after another. Then when we tried doubling him, they hit their wide open shots from the perimeter.

Dwight never averages more than 20 points or so in a game. How many times do you see him score 30? That’s why the Magic have fallen prey time and again, and why they were actually WORSE without Hedo Turkoglu (because Vince is a choke artist). But they’re better than us. Because Dwight is an athletic freak who is 25 pounds heavier and 3/4 of an inch taller than Horford? Yeah, partially. But also because we let Jameer, Reddick, Barnes, and Pietrus do as they please.

Last I looked, the world’s biggest morons could see that had nothing to do with our post defense….
